Our photo shows the Goll L

The Golf. A pleasure 1000 000 times over.

When we started to develop th e Golf, the car
we had in mind was to be in the vanguard of
modern automobile engineering. A car that
would suit today's traffic conditions while meeting today's demand for motoring comfort and
convenience. A car which is roomy and attractive
but still reliable and economical. In other words,
a Volkswagen.

As far as the engineering is concerned, it

comes with all the typical characteristics of the
new generation: front drive, the weight-paring
design and the lively, thrifty engines.
Compact, space-saving outside dimensions
cope with today's traffic situation and the parking-place shortage. An area of 64.6 square feet
is all the 146.6-inch-long Golf needs.

But inside we let ou rselves go. Th anks to the

bright idea of mounting the engine transve rsely
in fron t, it was possibl e to make th e 1nost of the
long wheel base. And we had p lenty of room for
generous p lanning at ou r disposal. For two or
four doors, for five well -fed occupan ts and any
amount o f luggage.
And lo give ii a character of its own, it has an

irrepressible, unconventional styl ing which sets

new, advanced standards on ou r roads.
So it is hard ly surprising to find so many
motoris ts co nvinced that they wou ld get on better
with the Golf.
Their number hos already passed rhe million
mark.

Our photo shows the Golf L.

The Golf. A pleasure from beginning to end.

Of course, driving is not on ly for pleasure . compartment with 13.1 cu. ft. capacity. Enough
Som eti mes you drive simply because you want for quite a few suitcases, travell ing bags and
to get something from here to there. Now, whi le your little daughter's doll's house.
some cars one wouldn't even consider for this
And if you happen to want to take the Chip purpose, the Golf can take a real load from th e pendale chest straight home with you from th e
antique shop, the luggage compartment can be
rear.
Its roof-high tailgate the width of the car is a lmost trebled in size - simply by folding th e
positively inviting . And opens up a luggage rear seat and backrest forward .

N ow there is a huge 38 .9 cu. ft. of luggage

space at your disposal. So, if you want to keep
a clear backward view when you are loaded to
the cei ling, it is advisable to order your Golf with
a second, inexpensive outside rear-view mirror
on the passenger side.
This is not a luggage compartment you can
count on finding in any saloon. Just loading a

bu lky item through a side door could prove quite

a problem, couldn't it?
So if ever you have any transport problems,
the Golf is th ere, ready to take a load off your
mind - and into its luggage compartment.

Our pho lo shows lhe cockp i I o f the G o l I G LS.

The Golf. A pleasure from the purely technical point of view.

With the Golf you have the choice of fou r engines. On the principle: From each accordi ng to
its performance, to each according to his needs .
Fi rst of al l, th ere is the 1.1 -litre engine. With
an output of 50 DIN bhp. If is more speed you
are after, it will not take you long to decide in
favour of the 1.5-litre engi ne with 70 DIN bhp.

But if extreme economy is what you want, we

have something quite special in store for you.
An eng ine which is quite unusual fo r a car in this
class, namely a special passeng er-car diesel
engi ne with l .5 litres capacity and an ou tput of
50 DIN.
Its performance is in no way inferior to that of

a petrol engine. And as far as consumption goes

it has managed to reach the point where stinginess ca n go no further.
These three engines are available with any of
the versions of the Golf - the 70-bhp Golf
being identified by an addi tional "S" to its name,
e. g. the Golf S. A nd the diesel Golf with a "D",

e.g. the Golf D.

There is the fourth engine too. The one at the
top of the class, driving the Golf GTI. But th is is
an engine worth a special page of its own.

O " ' pholo sho ws lh e inletior o f 1he Goll GLS.

The Golf. A long-distance pleasure.

Settle comfortab ly into the Golf. There is certainly plen ty of room to do so. For wi th 25.8 sq ft.
of passenger compartment, even long legs can
stretch out in comfort.
You wi ll feel comfortab le and safe in its anatomically designed front seats. Even after many
hundreds of miles. It has been padded with a
new kind of full-foam material which absorbs
and attenuates the bumps on the road. The back-

rests can be adjusted to any posi tion. Right down

to ful ly recl ining.
As far as the back-seat passengers are concerned, we have omitted nothing that ma kes fo r
the ir comfort. Plenty of breathing space to relax
in comfort, with the high ceiling and generously
high backrests, soft seats and generous legroom
mean that people will be just as happy to sit in
the back as in front.

The atmosphere stays pleasant too. Th e Golf ingly in an accident.

to take care of you, we gave the Golf a rigid that might hurt on impact.
passenger-cell compartment, computer-calcula W e wonted to make sure that your "Golfing"
ted crumple zones front and rear and safety locks plea sure would remain untroubled even o n
which prevent doors from bursting open unwitt- longer tours.

The Golf. A particularly' inexpensive pleasure.

10

Anyone can afford a Golf. And without having to d o w ithou t anyth ing !hat rea lly matters.
Even if it is the lowest-priced model - wh ich is
th e one we a re dealing with on this page . It w ill
have all th e basic equip1nent - by which we
mean a ll the equ ip men t that you rea lly need .
Th e Golf offers quite a number of practica l
fea tures which are not usua lly to be simply taken
for granted. The three-speed heating and ven-

ti la ti on blower, for ins tance. Or the two-speed

wind screen wiper system wi th addi tio na l ti p wipe con ta ct. Th e electrically operated wi nd screen wash ing system. The heated rea r window.
The door-pane defrosters. And th e recl ining
se ats.
All this is standard, too. Whi ch means you are
getting good vaJue for your mon ey. Not that w e
wa nt to forget the engineering which simp ly ca lls

for comparison with other makes in this price

class.
The eng in es have already been presented.
They are lively, full of temperament and thrifty.
The only thing left is the lavish chassis .
It has a suspe nsion strut front axle, guarantee ing accurate tracking. It has the combined trailing -arm centre-coupled rear axle which guarantees toe-i n and camber stability. It has a diago-

na lly divided dual circuit brake system which a lways brakes two diagonally opposed wheels one in fron t and one at rear.
It has disc brakes in front. And the d irection ally-stabilizing steeyng roll rad iu s, which you
will appreciate if you ever get one of your front
wheels on a soft shoulder and sti ll manage to
keep straight on your tracks.

11

The Golf L. A pleasure to .l be enioyed in comfort.

12

The Golf l will do something for your status,

w ith its stunn ing good looks. From chrome bumpers with rubber strips, through wa istli ne trim wi th
impact-profile, to the frames arou nd al l windows.
And from the elegant exterior it is easy to d raw
the correct conc lusion about the lavish comfort
of its interior. All the basic fittings a re there of
course. But there is a whole set of other pleasant
features as well.

The driver's sun visor, for instance, is made to

swive l to the side. And for your pretty front passenger there is a vanity mi rrow in the sun visor.
There are grab-handles and loops for anyone
who needs support. And restful armrests, even at
the back.
W ith ash trays in front and at rear, the smart
carpet will keep its bright new look longer. And
the light goes on for the passenger of the Golf l

too, when he opens his door.

And as for vis ibility : with the two-speed w indscreen w iper system, even a medi um -sized cloud burst will not succeed in cl oud ing you r view. A nd
if there is only the odd raindrop now and then,
an intermittent operation setting for the wipers
will relieve you of having to tu rn it on and off a ll
the time.
The Golf l is available with the 50 DIN bhp

engine. As the Golf LS it comes with the 70 bhp

engine and to rou nd the set off, as the Golf LD,
wi th the new diesel engine.
But whatever its engine, th e comfort it provides will always be fou nd to be a cut above its
Glass-ma tes'.

. "9--- .

The Golf GL. An outstandingly la vish pleasure.

14

Even the most finicky motorist will find the

Golf GL to his taste. He will miss nothing that is
needed for comfortable motoring in real style.
First of a ll it has everthi ng that the Golf and
the Golf L have. And a great deal more as well.
Bronze-tinted glazing all round. Which not only
sets the tone for its outside appearance but also
protects the Golf GL driver from glare.
And it creates the intimate interior atmosphere

that makes driving a pleasure. This is emphasized by the instrument panel paddi ng, the foampadded steering wheel, the covered window
ledges, elegant carpet lining the doors, floor
carpeting in matchin9 shade, carpet lin ing and
the elegant velour upholstery on the foam sea ts.
With "parchment" and "tobacco" upholstery,
the instrument panel, steering wheel and shiftlever knob are in contrasting brown. A lighter is

within easy reach. And so are a number of other

details which contribu te to th e pleasure of "Golfing" in the Golf GL.
Th e day/night rear view mirror. The central
console with parcel shelf. The steplessly adjustable instrument dial illumination and the luminous
identification on the most important operating
elements. The radiator temperature gauge, the
trip-milage recorder, the q 6artz clock, the

parking-light setting, outside mirror adjustable

from in side and a great dea l more. Even an
automa tic arrest feature for the tailgate-which
you will find most pleasant.
It goes without saying that the three engine
versions are available for the Golf GL too. The
50 DIN bhp for the Golf GL, the diesel engine
for the Golf GLD and the powerful 70 DIN bhp
engine for the Golf GLS.

15

The Golf GTI. A particularly lively pleasure.

16

There's no doubt that it will soon turn up in

Monza: the Golf GTI. A thoroughbred sportscar
with the power to head it into racing-car sport.
Lots of people were begging for a genuine sports
Golf. And now here it is, ready to take off at th e
starting line.
Drop in at your dealer's and take a peak under
its bonnet. A 1.6-litre engine that gets a full
l l 0 DIN bhp out of the car. How does it do it?

Wi th th e K-Jetronic. An injection system which

doses the fu el with exceptional accuracy.
It gets from 0 to 60 mph in a few seconds.
After that, you only have time to take a deep
breath before you experience its top speed. Its
chassis has been adapted to cope with improved performance, and there are wider whee l
rims and extra-wide steel radials to provide the
required additional safety.

And its equ ipment has been made to match

th is performance. Outside there are mat-black
strips on the lower sides and mat-b lack-framed
rear window. The mudguards have been widened wi th black plastic. There is a two-tone horn.
And halogen headlights.
Inside there are bucket seats, a sporty threespoke steering wheel and the golf-ball styled
shift-stick knob.
I

It does pretty well with consumption too, and

- true Volkswagen that it is - it is pretty im mune to the hardships of normal traffic-points
which are quite rare plusses for a sportsman as
lively as this one.

17

The Golf. A particularl convenient pleasure.

18

The Golf. An unbounded pleasure.

If everyone agreed about everthing as easily mesdames and mynheers, by signorinas and sirs,
as they agree about the Golf, internationa l understan ding wo uld be no problem. After all, the
Golf has received an enthusiastic welcome in
120 nations around the world.
From the cool north to the scorching south.
From easy-going America to traditional England.
From the sober West to the brilliant Orient. By
20

by damen and dons.

They all agree on its merits. A ll ore quite united
in thi nking it one of the most practical, economical thoroughly thought-out cars in th e world.
Agree that its functional beauty and its concentrated engineering harmonize with maximum
safety. And that its agile, lively temperament is

no flash-in-the -pan, but will last for years.

All hove fou nd to their pleasure that it has outstanding comfort, extensive equipment, and a
versatili ty th at is one of its strong est points.
All hove found, to their unbounded delight,
that its consumption, susceptibility to repairs and
upkeep requirements keep well within bounds.
The way one would expect of a Volkswagen.

All of w hich makes the Golf sound pretty convincing. But no need to leave it at that. How
abou t pu tting it to the test yourself by ta king it fo r
a test drive? Maybe your delight with the Golf
will then know no bounds.

Just imagine building a car for yourself

nowadays.
Let's start with the dimensions. Your car should
presumably be large enough to hold four to five
people without suffering from claustrophia. In
view of the shortage of parking spaces, it should
also be kept pretty short outside. It would also
be nice to have a luggage compartment
variable in size so that bulky freight could be

as far as the chassis is concerned, you proba bly

have no objection to modern front drive. You r car
should have good road-holding characteristics
even in rain and snow, after all.
There is no thin g like a spirited engine to keep
motoring from getting monotonous. But preferably one that is not too greedy for fu el !for who
knows what the gallon is going to cost tomorrow?!. So let's make it a thrifty o ne please.

A bodywork without old-fashioned frills and

fu rbelows - that goes without saying - one with
a sleek, chic appearance. So far, so good.
Al l that is left is the question of money. And
because you probably never have too much of
that to spare, purchase and maintenance costs
should stay firmly on the ground.
Any other wishes? Needless to say, the car
shoul d be reliable and pretty durable. Well, you
are not the only one to hold this view: over three

million people have had exactly the same idea

and (instead of picking up their cutters and
monkey-wrenches! have bought themselves a
Golf. Maybe, a fter you have read what we have
to say on the fol lowing pages, you'll feel like
fol lowing their example.
Plea se note thot the models shown wilh lehhond d rive in this colologue ore olso

Model illustrated: Goll GLS.

The Golf makes your day for you even

before you wake up in the morning.
Let's assume that you live in the centre of tow n
and are one of those people who can well do
without a garage. In the morning, you will find
your Golf parked just around the corner. Since it
is on ly 150 inches 13.81 metres) lo ng, there is
nothing easier than finding a parking slot for it
where you want it. Yo u get in, start and dive into

the b ustle of peak-hour mo rning tra ffic.

Thanks to its compact dimensio ns and its
clean bodywork lines, your Golf will swim
happily along in the stream of traffic. W henever
you have a chance to spurt merrily ahead, you
can fu lly rely on your Golf' s spirited engine:
lane-changing and threading your way into
lines of vehicles are no p roblem.
Outside of town, wh ether it's uphill o r down,

hair-pin bends, curvy roads or simple, straighta head driving, yo u can concentrate on the
motoring characteristics Un other words, on the
pleasure of motoring!. That is where the
advantages of the Golf's front drive and its
modern chassis design show up at their best. It
pulls along its tracks smoothly and reliably even
w hen travelling fast or the going is rough.
If you happen to make a habit of returning

from such excursio ns with a cart-load of firewood for your fireplace, it is no problem to lift
the gateback, fold down the rear seat backrest
and load the lot in.
The Golf is the sort of car that is always
prepared to join in the fun. And one that does its
duty cheerful ly too, as one has learned to expect
of a Volkswagen.

Model illustrate d, Golf GLS.

Let's talk about something pleasant money, for instance.

As with all other good things in life, the Golf
cannot be had simply for love - one needs
money too. A modern, technically sophisticated
car like this one natura lly has its price !albeit an
extremely reasonable one, as you will soon
learn I.
But what is p leasant about the Golf is not only
the price - which is truly within strictly

reasonable limits - but also the running costs. It

is delightfully low on fuel consumption. And it is
pleasant to think that it needs servicing only
every 5000 miles or every six months.
It is a car that one can practica lly ignore, in
fact. Because it does its duty modestly and
unobtrusively without complaint, without start-up
problems, and without the al l-too-frequent
troubles that come up with detai ls. Top workmanship has gone into the Golf, plus top quality

materials and a well-matured design. llt comes

from Volkswagen, after a ll.I
Nor should you overlook the fact that the Golf
has a highly modern chassis, a transversely
mounted, front-drive engine and all sorts of other
details to delight the technical connoisseur. But
w hat would be the use of a self-stabilizing
steering system, if the windows fail to close
properly after a while, if the inside lining comes
loose or if the ashtray falls out of place every

time the car takes a sharp curve?

To make sure that the Golf stays modest, goes
on being reliable and maintains a high resale
va lue, we put it in the hands of not'only the best
designers but also of the toughest test drivers. By
the way, we've built three million of Golf models
in the meantime. Which gives you an idea of the
day-to-day fitness and economy of this car.

The instrument panel of the Golf GLS. Top picture: air conditioning; picture 3: car radio - optional extras at extra charge

How do you like the Golf's new

instrument panel?
Ever since we started making the Golf we
have been constantly developing it too. Sometimes the improvements wil l not be immediately
obvious because they are concea led somewhere in the technical "innards" of the car and
are only obvious to those who know.
But sometimes, one needs only open one's
eyes to see them - as, for instance, with the

new instrument panel and the rear lights. (If you

turn back a page, you can see that the rear
lights have become larger and thus safer and
more beautiful.I
The new instrument panel now has even
clearer, a ll-at-one-glance instrumentation and
the switches even more conveniently at fingertip
reach. What's more, there is more shelf-room for
all the odds and ends one needs.
The amount of activity going on in the engine

compartment behind the instrument panel in

your Golf is largely up to you to decide. If you
want a lot, then we recommend the 81 -kW
!110 DIN bhpl injection engine in the Golf GTI. Or
the two ca rburettor engines of the Golf S with
51 kW !70 DIN bhpl in con ju nction with automatic transmission, and the 44 kW 160 DIN bhpl.
To give you an idea of just how lively these
engines are, even the 44-kW (60 DIN bhpl
engine gets from 0 to 60 mph !100 km/hi in

14.6 seconds. !And the two more powerfu l

engines some seconds faster, of course.I
But we would not be called Volkswagen if
these more powerful engines did not possess
unshakable rel iability and a very restrai ned thirst
for fuel too.
If the last point happens to be the one you
particularly have on your mind, then we recom mend the 37-kW !50 DIN bhpl petrol engine or
the diesel engine with 40 kW (54 DIN bhpl.

The interior of the Golf GlS. Top picture ond pictures 2 ond 3: seot belts; picture 4: outomotic transmission - optional extras ot extra charge.

And now, for the fun.

Before you get in, please take brief note of
what you are taking with you: just count up the
pieces of luggage. The Golf, you see, has a
variable interior which can be adapted in two
stages to the number of people or the amount of
luggage travelling with you.
Stage l: There are four or fiv.e of you going on

lf'\

a trip. The seats are left as they are and the

luggage compartment behind the rear seat is
crammed full through the huge gateback. All of
its 13.1 cu.ft. (370 litres).
Stage 2: You are travelling alone, or with just
one companion. You can fold the rear seat
backrest forward to get an even more generous
luggage compartment. If you have a second

o utside rear-view mirror, you can even pack this

compartment full right up to the ceiling.
Lest you are worried that your Golf looks
more like a truck than like a comfortable
limousine, take a look at the pictures on this
page to reassure yourself. With its fine
upholstery fabrics, its comfortable seats and its
soft carpeting, the Golf can calmly face com-

parison with many a larger passenger car.

Should all this still fail to impress you, we
recommend that you consult your salesman. He
has a wide range of extras to offer you from a
stereo installation through automatic transmission right up to extra-wide light a lloy wheel
rims. Yours for the asking.

Model illustrated: Golf !basic model!.

And now we'll teach you the Golf ABC.

Let's start with the letters "G" and "L". These
stand for the top class in the way of Golf equipment, so to speak. On the foregoing pages we
showed you all the things that come with a Golf
GL. Just in case you missed them, take another
look at the exclusive upholstery fabric, the
carpeting, the central console and the generous

12

instrumentation. Please take note of the outside

features of the GL, such as the bronze-tinted
windows and the bright ornamental strips and
hub-caps.
If you like, you can add an "S" or a "D" to your
"G" and "L" - a "D" stands fo r "diesel" and "S"
stands for the stronger, more powerfu l petrol
engines with 44 kW !60 DIN bhpl or 51 kW

170 DIN bhpl lthe latter being available only in

conjunction with automatic transmissionl.
These engines can be combined with the
basic equipment shown on this page, however.
Your Golf will then be designated accordingly
as the Golf S or Golf D.
The basic version of the Golf costs decided ly
less than the Golf G L, though there is nothing

poverty-stricken about it either, since its standard

equipment includes a three-speed heating and
ventilation blower, for example, an electric windscreen-washing system, ful ly reclining front seats,
heated rear window, carpeting on the floor and
a two-speed windscreen wiper system with tip/
wipe contact. The Golf Seven has a rev. counter
and halogen headl ights as well.

Model illustrated: Golf L

On with the alphabet.

On this page we now show you the Golf with
an "L". This "L'' model has some things in addition
to those provided in the basic model.
If the Golf Lis equipped with a diesel engine
or one of the two more powerful petrol engines it
will then be designated the Golf LD or the Golf
LS respectively.

What does the "L'' have to offer in the way of

advantages? The first thing that will strike you is
the outside brightwork: polished ornamental
frames around the windows and the radiator
grid, ornamental strips at the sides and on the
tailgate. And it goes on inside, with specially
patterned upholstery material with cladding to
match at the window columns, armrests, etc. At

the instrument panel, you'll be struck by the

foam-padded steering wheel, the windscreen
w ipers with intermittent operation setting and
automatic wash/wipe setting. !The latter, by the
w ay, means that both the windscreen washing
system and the wipers can be switched on at
o nce.I
For your passengers, the L model has some

additional amenities to offer, such as ash-trays

at the back and a vanity mirror in the sun visor
Ito keep your front passenger happy on longer
tours!.
But if you real ly want to make sure that no
boredom creeps in, then you should make a note
of the last three letters in the Golf alphabet: GTI.
Just turn the page.
, ,..

Modell illustroted: Golf GT

Are you ever in a particular hurry?

Now we'd like to tell you about the Golf GTI.
If you start to feel a certain tin gle of excitement
when you look at this car !and even more when
you drive it), we have to admit that this was our
very intention. What other reason would we
have had to give it an 81 -kW 1110 DIN bhpl engine with fuel in jection, plus a 5-speed gearbox?
, ,

Why else would we have given it the steel

radial-ply tyres size 175/70 SR 13, the widened
mudgards and the large front spoiler? The Golf
GTI happens to be a car whose motto is "Fun".
To this contribute a powerful !but still very thrifty)
engine, perfect roadholding and features to
delight the eye, the ear and the heart. Its
sta ndard eq uipment, fo r example, includes

bucket seats, a central console with an oil

temperature gauge, a sporty steering wheel,
black appointments and a nice !and loud!) twinto ne horn.
The chassis is natura lly of a standard to
match: stabi lizers at front and rear, duald iagonal brake system with disc brakes in front
a nd drum brakes at rear, brake pressure

regu lator and brake servo, sportscar springing

and a great deal more.
Not bad, when you think of it. So if your heart
beats a little faster when you look at this page,
take your seat in a Golf GTI and take it for a
spin.

There's one thing we probably ought to

mention: if you are after a car with
rarity value, the Golf is not for you.
It has already been built more than 3,000,000
times over and has reached all corners of the
globe. In fact, if you look out of the window right
now, you'll probably see one coming.
Should this lack of exclusiveness seriously

upset you, we can only advise you to go to

England and Italy where, it is said, there are cars
manufactured in such small series that they are
numbered by hand. Whether they are as
practical, as unpretentious and as loya l as a
Golf is another question.
But we do happen to know that the Golf has
found favour with some people who could not

exactly be termed "poor" !kings, presidents, film

stars and some of the bigger "big-business"-men
a round, fo~ instance!. So there is no need to
worry about the sort of company you 'll be
keeping when you drive a Golf.
There's nothing a Golf motorist cares less
a bout than prestige, creating an impression and
status symbols, in any case. What he is after is

motoring fun, arriving in comfort and safety without having to pay more for it tha n is
absolutely necessary. But if the Golf motorist, for
a ll his good sense, still has something of a chic,
progressive, lively image, who can object to
that?

~ow,

your choice, if there are still some ifs

And now for the fun with the small print.

With so many versions of the Golt there was
not enough space a t our disposal to present
them all in detail. This we do under "Technica l
data", where all the models a re described with
al l their equipment and various engines. But
before you start pondering on which model is
right for you, you should give yourself the treat

chirriney red

-- PH

of picking the colours - outside and in - that are

right for you.
The smal l table shows you which outside
paintwork matches which interior appointments.
A grey squa re indicates that the particular
combination is available.
If you have doubts whether the lido green
paintwork that you r constant companion prefers

diamond silver me1allic Z4Z4 -

regatto blue melollic

Z6Z6-

sand metallic

w ill match the black upholstery you are after,

th en consult your dealer. He has samples of the
ori ginal paintwork colours and the original
upholstery fabrics.
The illustrations can do no more than give you
a rough idea, since printi ng processes are
incapable of reprodu cing the fu ll brilliance of
paintwork co lours or the soft shades of fabrics

Z8Z8-

as they really are. He wi ll also be able to

explain any technical terms that were not quite
clear to you when you read the technical data.
He wil l also be pleased to advise you if you
have any problems with the various features of
equipment or the engines. And if you have any
special w ishes, his is the right address.
