ASSIGNMENT 1

DUE DATE: MONDAY, 04/01/2016, 5PM

Instructions: Solve the problems listed below. Provide all the solutions required and working
steps should be shown in detail. Mohr diagrams should be accurately drawn (not drafted) by
either manually using graph paper or computer generated. The Mohr diagrams should be
clearly labeled and complete.
1.) The state of stress at a point in a structure is depicted in Fig. 1. Calculate the normal
stress and the angle .
(8 marks)

Fig. 1

2.) Two prismatic bars of a by b rectangular cross section are glued as shown in Fig. 2.
The allowable normal and shearing stresses for the glued joint are 700 kPa and 560
kPa, respectively. Assuming that the strength of the joint controls the design, what is
the largest axial load P that may be applied? Use = 400, a = 50mm and b = 75mm.
(9 marks)

Fig. 2

3.) Consider a point in a loaded body subjected to the stress field represented in Fig. 3.
Determine the principal stresses and orientation (with respect to the original system)
of the maximum principal stress (1) in terms of direction cosines (l, m, n) and angle,
. Use both formulas and Mohrs circles to solve.
(19 marks)

4.) A metallic plate of width w and thickness t is subjected to a uniform axial force P as
shown in Fig. 4. Two strain gages placed at point A measure the strains X and Y at
300 and 600, respectively, to the axis of the plate. Calculate:
a.) The normal strains x and y.
b.) The normal strains X and Y.
c.) The shearing strain XY.
Given: w = 60mm, t = 6mm, E = 200GPa, v = 0.3 and P = 25kN.

5.) A rosette consisting of 3 gages forming, respectively, angles of 1, 2 and 3 with the
x-axis is attached to the free surface of machine components made of material with a
given Poissons ratio v = 0.3 and Modulus of elasticity E = 200GPa as shown in Fig.
5. Gage readings are: 1 = -75 10-6 mm/mm, 2 = 300 10-6 mm/mm and 3 = 250
10-6 mm/mm. (Take note that strain values given above are the gage readings and not
principal strains).

Fig. 5
Based on Fig. 5 and given point A, determine:
a.) Normal strain and shear strain components, x, y, z and xy.
b.) Magnitude and orientation of the maximum shear strain, max (determine
the orientation in degrees, measured from given state of strains).
c.) Principal strain components, 1, 2, and 3.

d.) Orientation of the principal strain plane (determine the orientation in

degrees, measured from given state of strains).
e.) Draw 3 dimensional Mohr diagram and indicate the points X (given state
of strains), center, 1, 2, 3, and max together with their coordinate values.
Also indicate the orientation of max and orientation of the principal plane
(both measured from given state of strains (point X)).
f.) Normal stress and shear stress components, x, y, z and xy.
g.) Magnitude and orientation of the maximum shear stress, max (determine
the orientation in degrees, measured from given state of stresses).
h.) Principal stress components, 1, 2, and 3.
i.) Orientation of the principal stress plane (determine the orientation in
degrees, measured from given state of stresses).
j.) Draw 3 dimensional Mohr diagram and indicate the points X (given state
of stresses), center, 1, 2, 3, and max together with their coordinate
values. Also indicate the orientation of max and orientation of the principal
plane (both measured from given state of strains (point X)).
(58 marks)

Remarks: You are allowed to form a group to solve the 5 problems above. Total
number of students in a group, n should be greater than or equals to 1 and less than or
equals to 5 (1 n 5). You are allowed to form a group consisting of students from
different lecture groups. All the members within a particular group will be given same
mark for the work submitted. You are also allowed to solve the given problems alone.
You are required to include a cover page for your submission with the information
below:
1.) Title
2.) Group members names, ID numbers and lecture groups
3.) Submission date
4.) Due date
Your submission can be either handwritten or computer generated. Late submissions
