In last week's portion, we saw that Jacob (the younger of Isaacs twins) bought
the Birthright from his brother Esau in exchange for a bowl of lentil soup, and
then tricked his ageing father, Isaac into thinking he was Esau so he could
receive the blessing of the firstborn. Thus, Jacob became our third Patriarch.

Jacobs First Encounter with YHVH

This week's Torah portion we learn the history of Jacob, the son of Isaac, who in order to escape the wrath of Esau - was sent to live with his grandfather
B'tu'el and told to choose a wife from the daughters of his Uncle Laban,
Rebecca's brother (who, although he was "family" did not worship the God of
Abraham, Isaac and Jacob). Previously we saw a type of an arraigned
marriage, and here Jacob had to choose his own wife. So Jacob went toward
Haran and one night he had an encounter with YHVH:
Genesis 28: 10-15 Jacob went out from Be'erSheva and travelled toward Haran. 11 He came to a
certain place and stayed the night there, because the
sun had set. He took a stone from the place, put it
under his head and lay down there to sleep. 12 He
dreamt that there before him was a ladder resting
on the ground with its top reaching to heaven, and
the angels of YHVH were going up and down on it.
13 Then suddenly YHVH was standing there next to
him; and he said, "I am YHVH, the Elohim of
Abraham your [grand]father and the Elohim of
Isaac. The land on which you are lying I will give to
you and to your descendants. 14 Your descendants
will be as numerous as the grains of dust on the
earth. You will expand to the west and to the east, to
the north and to the south. By you and your descendants all the families of
1

the earth will be blessed. 15 Look, I am with you. I will guard you
wherever you go, and I will bring you back into this land, because I won't
leave you until I have done what I have promised you."
In this dream YHVH revealed Himself to Jacob as the God of Abraham and
Isaac. YHVH reconfirmed the Covenant with Jacob; He made with Abraham and
with Isaac. Then there is a prophetic aspect to the promise YHVH made to
Jacob where He said; I will guard you wherever you go, and I will bring
you back into this land, because I won't leave you until I have done what I have
promised you." This means that YHVH will take Jacob (Israel) into the Land,
then they will leave and YHVH will bring Israel back to the Land. This also
means that YHVH will not leave Israel, His people, until He has done what He
has promised.
YHVH spoke to people in different ways; He spoke to Abraham it seems that
Abraham just heard His Voice, later on YHVH appeared to Abraham and Sarai
in the form of three Messengers. Then He spoke to Isaac and Rebecca it seems
that they herd His Voice and knew that it was YHVH talking to them. Here YHVH
appeared to Jacob in the form of a dream and showed him a vision as well as
speaking to him.
Jacob referred to this place as the Gate of Heaven where he had a very
realistic awesome experience with YHVH. In his sleep Jacob saw a high ladder.
At the top of the ladder he saw a vision of YHVH on His throne of glory. This
was Jacobs first prophetic, vertical experience.

Jacobs Ladder
We read in Scripture that after Jacob left his home, he came to Ha Macome
THE PLACE on Mount Moriah, this word is used three times emphasising its
importance. Why the Place? The Sages believe that where Jacob laid down
his head was the Place where the three Temples would be built. Jacob thus
miraculously hit upon the site of the Holy of Holies and had his first prophetic
experience. He had received the keys to prophecy, but now it was actually
happening. The heavensthe higher channels of his own consciousnesswere
being opened wide. He was receiving his personal vertical transmission directly
from YHVH.
This Jacob experience is parallel to the picture of the Holy Place and the Holy of
Holies. The Holy Place is the first step into the Presence of YHVH, but from afar,
just like the vision of the Ladder with YHVH in the distance on His throne. You
start at the bottom and go up the Ladder where you will have an elevated
experience and become more sensitive to the Spiritual and hearing His Voice
more clearly.
Q What does Jacobs Ladder represent?
Several meanings can be found in the meaning of the Ladder, and we will have
a look at some of them.
1 The Ladder Represents YHVHs Temple: The first meaning of the Ladder
is connected to the Three Temples that would be built as mentioned earlier. The
purpose of these temples are seen through comparing them to the digging of the
Wells found in the previous Parashah in Gen 26:19 These three new wells that
were dug prophetically points to the attributes of these three Temples:
2

Esek that means contention This represents 1st Temple because of

the contention within Israel and the people who could not get along and
eventually went into Babylonian exile.
Sitnah that means enmity This Temple was build and then later
destroyed because of hatred without a cause the same we heard of
what was said about Yshua being hated without a cause. This was in the
time of Herods reign, and this generation was worst than the previous.
The Temple was destroyed and still absent today.
Rehoboth that means spaciousness no quarrels and peace This well
refers to the Third Temple that will be built and is to come in the future.

2 The Ladder Represents Mans Connection with YHVH: This is similar

to a Temple where man connects with YHVH but this time man represents the
temple. This temple (man) and Ladder has the following in common; a ladder
has 2 sides and a man has a physical and a spiritual side, and you can only
ascend if you have both. The Ladders rungs represent the Commandments of
YHVH connecting the two sides and are the means you ascend to connect
with YHVH. The Commandments makes this ladder (man) stable so that the
person can ascend towards YHVH.
Jacobs Ladder or the image of Jacob connecting with YHVH is part of what we
discussed in the first Parashah namely the creation of Humanity where man are
being created into YHVHs Likeness. He finished creating us in His Image on
Day 6 but to be created into His Likeness will take a lifetime. That is one of the
reasons why you exist on this earth. We need His Spirit in order to be created
into His Likeness as we have seen last week where Jacob received the
Birthright that included the receiving of YHVHs Spirit, carrying the Priestly
responsibilities of the Family. By receiving His Spirit we can have a Connection
with YHVH and have a Holy of Holies experience, encountering YHVH on a
very deep and real level where we reach the Ultimate Consciousness walking
with YHVH as Enoch did.
We will now look at a visual representation of this Ladder in order to understand
how we are created into His Likeness as well as Connecting with YHVH on a
deeper level and what that means on a practical level.

NASHAMA

NEFESH

The Ladder Jacob saw was the symbol of connecting Heaven with Earth or the
Spiritual Realm with the Physical Realm. The Ladders bottom part on the
Earth represents man fallen state that includes death. When you look on the left
you will see all the things pertaining to the Nephesh or flesh that tend to pull us
down towards spiritual death. As you go up the Ladder, you see on the left that
your Spirit man or Nashamah is coming to life, and you start to reach towards
the things and attributes of YHVHs Spirit, becoming Like Him.
The Scale on the Left gives you an indication of where you are generally living
in relation and where you generally standing on this ladder. You may have
short bursts of anger or fear that will pull you down from the place where you
usually live, say, love. This shows us how the enemy wants to pull us down so
that we can ultimately be destroyed through spiritual death and later physical
death. YHVH, on the other hand, wants us to be elevated higher and live in a
higher state becoming Like He is.
Love, Peace Joy puts you on the top end of the scale, and you have control over
two of these namely Love and Joy. Love is a choice, and Joy is a choice and
attitude that you can have every day through being conscious of its importance.
The more you choose it the more it will become a habit, and then you will
become it. Peace will follow as your life gets sorted out with the help of YHVH.

On the lower end of the Ladder, you get Anger, Desire (lust), Fear and Guilt. All
these pulls you down into the Basement of your life where you exist in a
miserable and even depressed state. Just like the Love, Joy and Peace, you
have control over all of these ones as well. Guilt comes after you have sinned
and in order to control Guilt you need to control yourself not to sin, pursuing
Holiness. Fear is a state that binds you and changes the way you think but can
be overcome by Faith and Love which are choices. Every time you have a
thought of Fear you replace it with Truth from YHVHs Word regarding that
situation you fear about, then Fear will disappear. Desire or lust of the flesh
can be controlled by disciplining your flesh, not allowing it to see or be
exposed to the things that cause you to fall. Anger is a choice. Someone does
not make you angry, you choose to get mad. Whenever there is a situation
where you feel the blood pumping up your neck, do not react, count to ten and
choose to calm. As you can see a lot of these has to do with bad habits and a lot
of self-discipline in order to control it. The flesh is like a wild horse that needs to
be trained until it has created the right habits. This is where you have to be
aware of your actions every moment of the day so that you can actively control
it. Once you move away from these negative fleshly habits and start expressing
the positive attributes of YHVH you will move up Jacobs Ladder where your
Nashamah will rule and dominate the Nephesh.
3 The Ladder Represents Yshua: Lastly the Ladder represents Yshua
connecting Heaven and Earth. Yshua was from Heaven and came to Earth
connecting the Father with man becoming a Mediator between them. Why a
Mediator, why cant we just go into the physical presence of the Father? YHVH
is Holy and we are not, His Holiness is like a consuming fire that will saturate
and burn away everything impure. You need to be created into His Likeness
before you can stand before Him and that is what Yshua did; to create the
means for us to be elevated spiritually ds that we can stand before the Father
without being consumed.

Jacob Marries Labans Daughters

Jacob means heel catcher or schemer or one that overthrows something.
This was what Jacobs life was about. He schemed his brother out of his
birthright, and he also plotted with regards to the animals when he stayed with
his uncle Laban. His uncle returned the favour (schemed back) and gave Jacob
his daughter Leah first, instead of Rachel, the one he really loved and he had to
work seven additional years to get his beloved bride.
Leah means weary, grieved or impatient. Her name tells us about the
frustration that poor old Jacob experienced, waiting seven years longer before
he could have Rachel. This taught Jacob to be patient and persevere until he
reached his goal.
Personal Application: This shows us that
YHVH will never give you the first prize right
from the beginning in your walk with Him.
Beginning your walk with Him, you will
experience difficulties to build your character.
Once you build character, then He will bless you.
You wouldnt be able to handle the blessings of
5

YHVH without a changed character. Joseph had to become a slave in jail

before he could rule and David had to be a shepherd for years before he
could become king. YHVH is more interested in you being changed than
you being spoiled. A blessing without character will destroy you and you
need wisdom to handle blessings.
Prophetic Meaning: The two seven year periods shows us the periods where
YHVH married Israel at Sinai (Leah) first and then He will come to marry His
Beloved Bride (Rachael) at Yshuas Second Coming. The Hebrew marriage has
two parts, first the contract (engagement contract with Laban) and then after
two years He will collect His bride (second period working for Rachael) to live
with her in the house that He has prepared for His Bride.

The Consequences of Jacobs Actions

Jacob took advantage of Isaacs blindness to get the
Blessing, and the Birthright and Laban took
advantage of Jacobs blindness, and got married to
Leah because of the dark tent, instead of Rachael, is
preferred choice. When Jacob found out he was
upset and confronted Laban, then Laban replied: it is
not our custom here to give the younger as bride
before the older. Jacob responded in the same way
as his brother Esau, when lost the birthright, because
it was not the custom to give the birthright to the younger son.
Because of Jacobs deceit, Jacob had to be separated from Isaac for about 22
years then later on because of Josephs brothers deceit, Joseph was
separated from Jacob for about 22 years where Jacob experienced the
loneliness his father Isaac had experienced. At the end everything worked out
for good after going through the character building experiences and
consequences of previous actions.
What is interesting is that Jacob did not intend to deceive his father Isaac, His
mother heard from YHVH and this cause her to act to intervene because of
Isaacs spiritual blindness, not hearing what the will of YHVH himself regarding
the Birthright. Rectifying the problem was made possible because of Esau's
fleshiness and Isaacs blindness and resulted in Jacob doing something that
had an impact on his life, reaping consequences. Sounds unfair if you look at it
this way. This is what Yshua went through as well, reaping the consequences of
mans fallen sinful state, rectifying the problem. The Restoration Process of
YHVHs Creation sometimes follow a path we cannot explain or understand, but
YHVH is in full control and knows exactly what He is doing. Even Yshuas
Disciples were shocked to see Him die but only understood later on when YHVH
revealed His Plan, showing us the bigger picture.
Personal Application: Sometimes you will go through things that seem
unfair and say how can YHVH allow this to happen to one of His children
but at the end you will see that everything we struggle to understand, was
a building block in His Restoration Plan.

How to Control Jacob

We have seen in the previous Parashah that Jacob, even in the meaning of his
name, can be a schemer and that is not what YHVH intended him to be, YHVH
started by changing his name and then his character. There is an interesting
verse that uses Jacobs name in a context you will not expect.
Jer 17:9 The heart is deceitful (ya-aqov) above all things, And
desperately wicked;
Who can know it?
The heart is deceitful the word for deceitful is aqov that
is where Jacob got his name from. That means that your
heart is like Jacob, a schemer and if you listen to your
heart you will be schemed out of something. The world
teaches us to listen to our hearts, but there is a lot of
brokenness that exists in this world because of that. We
learn from this that we do not only have the flesh or Esau
(Nefesh) to overcome as an enemy, but the heart or Jacob
(Nashama) can also cause us to go astray and needs to be governed by YHVH
and His Word. This is why the spirit or Nashama without the Word can create
wildfire and go astray. It is not YHVHs Spirit that causes this, but the
enlightened soul (Nashama) that can go wild and not follow YHVHs ways. We
see that a lot of this in the religious science where people only follow the
Spiritual and have no foundation in the Word that caused them to engage in
things that can be classified as wildfire.
Q What is Wild Fire?
Wildfire is the term that came from the event where Aarons sons took fire from
the Altar to perform Temple service, but the fire of YHVH devoured them
because they did not follow YHVHs protocols and the spiritual thing they did
caused wildfire cost them their lives. Wildfire exists in a Temple or Church
where the spiritual things are pursued without a foundational understanding of
the Word. His Word is intended to keep the Fire of YHVH within a safe
distance to give light and warmth without burning or devouring the people.
Personal Application: When you receive the Spirit you change from a
Esau to a Jacob, from following the flesh or Nefesh to following the spiritual
soul or Nashama. Remember the Nashama is not YHVHs Spirit; it is your
enlightened soul that now connects with the help of YHVHs Spirit to Him.
This spiritual soul is the Jacob that is also referred to as the heart that
can deceive you. Jacob is not the ultimate changed state we need to
conform to, YHVH still need to change our characters so that we can move
from being Jacob to becoming Israel with a new character and destiny.
Q How can we then not be deceived and how can we be changed?
You should have the Spirit AND the Word of YHVH in order to set safe
boundaries for your Spiritual enlightened inner man to be governed in order
not to connect to spiritual things without YHVH. The Spiritual realm is just like
the Physical realm, there is good and evil out there and if you connect to the
Spiritual without His Word you may be deceived and entrapped by a spirit that is
not from Him and be burnt by wildfire. Everything we do in the Physical and

in the Spiritual should always be governed by YHVHs Word / Torah that

provides a safe path to travel on.
We consist of three governing parts; the heart is the Emotional Centre of our
beings, the brain is our Intellectual Centre where we receive information and
process it and our Gut is where our Spiritual Centre resides where we get a
hunch or prompt to do or not to do something. We should not listen to our hearts
but rather to our stomachs or guts or think it through before we act.
Your Spiritual Centre or Gut is also your physical stomach, and that is what
causes Adam and Eve to fall, interesting. The stomach is also the animal you
need to feed in order to survive and live. In a spiritual sense, the gut is the
place that is in the centre of your body, and that is where the Spirit talks to you
in order so that you can survive. The gut without the Sprit is similar to what
we know as Esau or the flesh.
The Spirit engages with the Gut, the Word enters and influences our mind, but
nothing governs our hearts or emotions except you. That is why the heart
cannot be trusted. You must hear from the Sprit in your Spiritual Centre and
have the Word in your Intellectual Centre thinking and processing His Word so
that you can control your Emotional Centre that is your heart. You should
never be led by your heart / emotions but rather be led by the Word and by the
Spirit.

From Jacob to Israel

Jacobs name was changed to Israel L@XYI after he wrestled with YHVH.
The name Yisrael consists of two words yasher, which means upright or
righteous, and El which is a short form of Elohim. This gives us the meaning of
Israel - Righteous people of Elohim.
People who become believers in Yshua think that they are not part of Israel, but
they are mistaken. If you become born again, you are grafted into Israel and
become a Righteous one of Elohim or part of Israel. Just to set things right, the
Church did not replace Israel, they have become part of Israel. The name
Christian means anointed one and there were many anointed ones throughout
history that were Israelites. To be a Christian means that you are part of the
Bride that is associated with Rachael because she was the second bride prior
to His Second Coming. Paul explains it beautifully in Romans where we fit in the
Family Tree:
Rom 11:17-21 And if some of the branches were broken off, and
you, being a wild olive tree, were grafted in among them, and
became a sharer of the root and the fatness of the olive tree with
them, (18) do not boast against the branches. But if you boast, it
is not you that bears the root, but the root bears you. (19) You
will say then, The branches were broken off so that I might be
grafted in. (20) Well, because of unbelief they were broken off,
and you stand by faith. Do not be high-minded, but fear. (21) For
if God did not spare the natural branches, fear lest He also may
not spare you either!

Some of the natural branches (Jews or ancient Israel) did not believe and were
broken off. We know that we are saved through faith. We see here that even the
Jews are saved through faith. They were broken off because of unbelief. (not
believe broken off not saved) That means that through their stubbornness to
listen to YHVHs Word and His Prophets, that caused them to be broken off
(taken into exile). Faith is to be faithful in doing what YHVH asks of us. Faith
comes from the root word that means nurturing Father, and we need to
become dependent on Him so that He can give us the spiritual food we need to
live. His food is His Word. His Word is defined as the TaNaK the Torah, the
Prophets and the Psalms, not only the New Testament.

Jacob the Father of Israel

YHVH changed Jacobs name to reflect his new character and
destiny and He changed Jacobs walk after wrestling with him.
Even with Jacob being the Spiritual brother, he had to be
changed on order to move from being a self-seeking scheemer
into a righteous person that could be used by YHVH who
became the father of the twelve tribes of Israel. Their names
and meanings are as follows:
1. Ruben to see
2. Simeon to hear
3. Levi to join to, interweave
4. Judah Celebrate and praise YHVH with dalet C or door inserted

12. Ben-oi, Benjamin son of my sorrow, right hand
The meaning of the names of the sons of Jacob (Israel) would be as follows:
See and Hear o Israel, restoration is coming, celebrate the One Who is the
Way (door) to salvation and the Judge. You will wrestle with Him but He is
the Seed and the Bread (manna) from heaven. Happy and blessed be the
ones who accept Him for His reward is with Him and will make His habitation
among you. YHVH has added many to you through the Son of His sorrow,
but He is exalted and sit at the Fathers right hand.
If we look at the meaning of the names of the sons as will as the meanings of
their mothers, we see three time periods that spell out a prophetic timeline of
events that will take place and will bring us right to the end.
First Time Period: Leah, mother of the first four sons. (Leah means weary,
grieved and impatient). This is the time period from creation up to the First
Coming of Yshua.

YHVH revealed Himself to man through His Word so that they might see Him.
The only way to see is to hear the Word of YHVH. YHVH is an invisible El
Who hid Himself from the unrighteous but reveals Himself through His Creation
and His Word. YHVHs Commandments is given to man so that they can
interweave it into their lives and be part of His set-apart people through whom
He transfer His Plan through the Birthright that are guarded and taught by His
Priesthood (Firstborn). The Messiah is the Door and the Way and the Life
that leads to the Father and He is the Praise of YHVH Judah being the 4th son
out of Israel, prophetically shows the Messiahs coming. (4 means work of the
Messiah). This work of the Messiah will be done during the fourth millennium.
Second Time Period: The next four sons are from the two slave women;
Bilhah (calamity) and Zilpah (tricking). This points to the next time period
between the First Coming and the Second Coming of the Messiah The two
slave women are from Gentile origin and show that during this time period the
Gentiles will come in.Four sons came forth from these two slave women that
represent the Gentiles consisting of two groups; scattered Israelites and Gentile
Nations.

This mixed multitude will come in through grace (fifth son) in a time where man
is to prepare for the Messiahs Second Coming, the time of Judgement. In this
time period there will be calamity (Bilhah - tribulation) and ticketing (Zilpah
false religion) There will be a wrestling regarding the Word and false
doctrines, but in the end YHVH will reveal His Truth, His real Word as manna
spiritual food in order to separate the goats from the sheep where they will
blessed and happy, entering into His rest when He appears.
Third Time Period: After this time awaiting the Second Coming of Messiah we
see the Time of the End as revealed in the last four sons. Two of these sons
were born of Leah (grieved), and two were born of Rachael (Beloved) It says in
Scripture that there will be tears and joy when Messiah comes the second time.
This is the time where YHVH will come down a third time and make His final

from the beginning and all those who will be added in the end (scattered Israel

10

and Gentiles), all will be gathered by the work of His sorrow (death for sin).
He will rule over them from the New Jerusalem, from His Fathers right hand.
