Definiation For The Following

Pollution

4-6

Air Pollution
Land Pollution
Water Pollution
Pollution:
Is the unclean state of the environment (land, atmosphere or
water) resulting in physical, chemical and biological changes
that can seriously affect ecological systems.
Air Pollution:
Air pollution occurs when gases, dust particles, fumes or
odour are introduced into the atmosphere in a way that
makes it harmful to humans, animals and plant. This is
because the air becomes dirty (contaminated or unclean).
Land Pollution:
Is the destruction of the earths land surfaces, often directly
or indirectly as a result of mans activities and their misuse of
land resources.

Water Pollution:
Is the contamination of water bodies (e.g. lakes, rivers,
oceans, aquifers and groundwater), very often by human
activities.

Ways In which Each Of The Following Can Be Polluted

Air
Water
Land

Air:
1.Burning of Fossil Fuels
2. Emissions from industries and manufacturing activities.
3. Household and Farming Chemicals
4. Landfill-fires causing a large blanket of smoke over the
area.
5. Decomposition of organic animal and vegetable matter
which released poisonous gases such as carbon dioxide,
hydrogen sulphide, ammonia and carbon disulphide.
Water:
1.Sewage and waste water
2.Septic Tanks
3.Ocean and marine dumping
4.Underground storage and tube leakages
5.Atmospheric

Land:
1.Solid waste disposal
2.Industrial waste discharge from factories
3.The dumping of mining waste
4.The improper farming methods
5. Deforestation and soil erosion

Ares In The Caribbean Where You Might Find Each Types

Of Pollution
Water Pollution
1.Kingston Harbor Jamaica; Chemicals from pesticides and
fertilizers used on farms seep into rivers like the Rio Cobre
and Hope River and eventually end up in the harbor.
2 Carani Swamp in Trinidad; industrial chemical waste seep
into the swamp.
3. Couva Bay in Trinidad; pollution by industrial waste from
Point Lisas Industrial Estate and other areas runs off into
streams that eventually end up in Couva Bay.
4. Belize city in Belize; the cannals that take the floodwaters
to the sea are also conduits for sewage and waste water.
5. Tucacas Beach Venezuela; run-off from industrial and
agricultural activity is a threat to the coral reefs.

Air Pollution
1. St Georges Grenada; Cruise ships are major polluters
because they release sewage offshore.
2. Perseverance St. Georges Grenada; burning of waste
materials
3. St. Georges Grenada; Grenlec Power Station the burning of
diesel to produce electricity.
4. Port Of Spain Trinidad; vichicles exhaust release of carbon
monoxide.
5. Grantley Adams International Airport(GAIA) in Barbados;
has been awarded Caribbean's Leading Airport however it is

one of the major polluters because planes release carbon

monoxide in the atmosphere.

Land Pollution
1. Perseverance St. Georges Grenada; solid waste disposal
2. Spring farm St Vincent and the Grenadines; deforestation
and soil erosion.
3. Andrews Sugar Factory in Barbados; disposal of Industrial
waste.
4. Cuyuni-Mazaruni, Guyana; the dumping of mining waste
5. Clarks Court Factory in Woodlands Grenada; disposal of
Industrial waste.

Noise Pollution
1. Maurice Bishop International Airport, St Georges Grenada;
the arriving of aircraft produce loud noise.
2. Fish Market in St. Georges; the sound of many people
talking and the chopping up of fish.
3.Terminal in St. Georges; the sound of so many people
talking at the same time in a loud tone.
4. Vegetable Market in Gouyave St. Johns Grenada; the sound
of many people talking, buying and selling of Goods.
5. Grantley Adams International Airport(GAIA) in Barbados;
the arriving of aircraft produce loud noise.

Consequences Of Pollution In The Caribbean

Contaminated lands and environments can:

*Cause problems in the human respiratory system.
*Cause various kinds of cancers.

The toxic materials that pollute the soil can get

into the human body directly by:
*Being washed into water sources like reservoirs and rivers.
*Eating fruits and vegetables that have been grown in
polluted soil.

Dump sites and landfills also come with serious problems like
*Very bad smell and odour in the town.

*Death of aquatic animals.

Measures That can Be Used To Reduce Pollution

1. Eat organic foods that are grown without pesticides. Look

out for fertilizer or pesticide free products when you go to the
market.

2. Do not throw chemicals, oils, paints and medicines down

the sink drain, or the toilet.
3. If you live close to a water body, try to plant lots of trees
and flowers around your home, so that when it rains,
chemicals from your home does not easily drain into the
water.
4. Modify transportation by switching to a more gas-efficient
vehicle.
5. Reduce materials; reusing is always beneficial than buying
new ones.
6. Respect other people's hearing. Keep the noise pollution
down by wearing ear plugs or turning the sound down.
7. Use a rake, broom, or electric leaf blower instead of a
gasoline leaf blower.
8. Wash clothes in cold water whenever possible.
9. Plant more trees.
10. Put up more No Dumping signs so that people will know
not to litter.

Acid rain:
Acid rain is a result of air pollution. When any type of fuel is
burnt, lots of different chemicals are produced. The smoke
that comes from a fire or the fumes that come out of a car
exhaust don't just contain the sooty grey particles that you
can see - they also contains lots of invisible gases that can be
even more harmful to our environment. Acid rain can be

carried great distances in the atmosphere, not just between

countries but also from continent to continent. The acid can
also take the form of snow, mists and dry dusts. The rain
sometimes falls many miles from the source of pollution but
wherever it falls it can have a serious effect on soil, trees,
buildings and water.
