PROPOSAL FOR STARTING OF A BIOGAS PLANT IN

IBS HYDERABAD
BILL GATES once said Lets drive not just breakthroughs in new products but new ways
to give more and more people access to these inventions and their benefits. This is a broad
and important mission and I believe we all have a party to play in it. Keeping the above
quote in mind, group 8 has come up with the proposal of starting of a new biogas plant for our
college that is IBS HYDERABAD.
Before we proceed with the various steps with which we followed in coming up with the
proposal, the main question which comes up first is that, that how did we come up with this
proposal? There were various reasons which backed us up, they are :
1) Its an environment friendly disposal of waste which is the need of the hour considering
the amount of pollution already present in the atmosphere.
2) It would generate good amount of energy which can be used in the various purposes in
the college premises.
3) Since the college campus has a huge amount of greenery, this proposal if implemented
would produce a lot of high quality manure which would be an excellent soil conditioner
as well.
4) Last but not the least, the end product of our proposal is the BIOGAS which is a
colorless, odorless and inflammable gas. So its really a very beneficial idea with respect
to not only the environment but with respect to all the students of the campus as one
never know, if this is successfully implemented, it might get our mess fees reduced a bit
and with respect to management as its convenient.
Following are the steps which we would be following for the mentioned purpose, if our project
gets passed:
1) Identifying the main goal
2) Contents of the project
3) Project location
4) Resources used
5) Costs that would be incurred
6) Analysis of the capacity and the capability
7) Project team and management
8) Monitoring
9) Evaluation
10) Further plans to follow up

Identifying the main goal: Our main goal is to produce the maximum energy (gas) required
in the campus by using the various biodegradable waste materials produced in the campus.

Contents of the project: This bit explains the main issues to be covered.
First of all with 1kg of biomass 62.5L of bio-gas is generated which is enough to prepare food
for 6 Indians.
At our campus we have around 2500 people including students, faculty members, workers etc.
Per day a human being produces 2.5kg of fecal matter that equals to 2.5*2500 = 6250kg
of fecal matter.
Average daily waste from mess is 100kg per mess, and from canteen it would be around
50kg.
Average daily waste from all the hostels will be around 50kg.
So total waste is equal to 6550kg of waste, which will produce 6550*62.5 = 409375L of
bio-gas. Which is enough to prepare food for 409375/6 = 68230 people and our
requirement is to serve four meals a day which makes total serve to 10000 people so still
we are left with 58230L of gas which can be used for various other purposes in the
campus.
The material to be processed is brought to the plant site every day. Four workers are needed for
the operation of the plant. The important tasks to be done are:
1. Transport of waste materials
2. Processing the waste in mixer
3. Routine operations for pre-digester and digester tanks
4. Manure pits

Project location: As the campus is really huge with 94 acres of land, there is a lot of space
for the starting of the biogas plant. The ideal location what we thought is. The main factor which
we had to keep in mind is that the plant cannot be around the hostel locations as it might create
some foul smell, which could be intolerable sometimes.

Resources: Resources for the biogas generation will mainly will be food wastage that occur in
canteen and hostel mess.

Costs: Total budget of the project would be around 7 lakh. It includes the startup cost of the
project. We need to 2 employees to take care of the functioning of plant.

Analysis of the capacity and the capability: We would construct 4 Biogas Plants each
come in capacity of 12 m3/ Day. With daily food wastage of 400 Kgs, it can help in generating
Biogas to the capacity of 12.5 m 3 / Day/plant with cal. value of Biogas being 4700 Kcal /
m3/plant (Equivalent to 5.3 Kg /day of LPG/plant).

Specifications:
Daily Food Waste
Capacity of 4 Biogas Plant (12m3 X 4)
Biogas Generation
Cal. Value of Biogas

400 Kgs
48 m3 / Day
50 m3 / Day
18800 Kcal / m3

Project team and management: Project head will be looking after the entire
implementation in phases, apart from this he will be assisted by two assistance who will look
after the delivery and receipt of the goods and its storage for construction and the other will be
inspecting the construction work.
The project will be implemented in 4 phases in each phase a single Biogas plant wil be
constructed and will be made operational. Capacity can then be enhanced as new plants get
functional.
The Biogas plant functions & inspections can be covered under the supervision of Sewage
treatment plant Co-ordinator. However 2 new people will have to be employed to take care of
these 4 biogas plants.
Slurry coming out of the biogas plant after the digestion has essential nutrients, enhances waiter
holding capacity and aeration, accelerates root growth and seed germination. This can be used as
manure to the vast area covered in the form of gardening in the campus.

Monitoring: Daily monitoring for amount of biogas manure that comes out of the plant has to
be done and should be checked for solid content and pH value. The records of the two should be
maintained in a separate register. This will be helpful for the audit purpose and also incase of any
contingency.

Evaluation:
Evaluation of the project based on the cost and benefit is presented below
Equivalent LPG
Cost Saving due to use of biogas
Annual Saving in Fuel (365 working days )
