5.2 Setting the Network Address

5.2.1 Basics
TCP/IP protocol is a commonly used protocol in todays computer networks. For
example, all the computers connected to Internet communicate with each other via
TCP/IP. Within the 800xA system, AC800M controllers & PC nodes (such as Aspect
Servers and Connectivity Servers) also communicate with each other via TCP/IP.
According to TCP/IPs rules, each network card gets a unique IP address. The IP
address is set by assigning a series of numbers to a PCs network card. For the
AC800M controller, it works the same way.
The IP address setting has two items:

IP address e.g. 127.16.4.1

Subnet mask e.g. 255.255.252.0

The subnet mask is used to divide the PCs into different sub networks, and this can
make the net communication more secure and efficient. The subnet mask determines
which part of the IP address represents a network address and which part represents a
node address.

5.2.2 How to Set the Computer Address

Each computer on the network has one or more network cards built in. Each card
needs a unique IP address, but normally this is set when the computer is loaded, and
you dont need to change it.
1. Right click on the My Network Places icon on the desktop and select
Properties in the drop down menu.

Chapter 5 - 3

2. All the network cards the PC has will show up in the network connection window.
Right click the one you want to set and choose Properties.

3. Select the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and click on Properties.

4. Set the IP address and Subnet Mask accordingly and click OK.

Chapter 5 - 4

5.2.3 How to Set the Controller Address

All controllers delivered from the factory have the same IP address. You must change
the IP address to an address, which is available in your own network. This could be
necessary if a controller is replaced due to a failure or upgrade to a more powerful
model.
System 800xA provides a software tool IPConfig to setup the IP address for AC
800M controllers. Use the tool IPConfig to establish contact between the engineering
station and the AC 800M controller (connected via a serial cable).

Start the IPConfig tool by:

Start > Programs > ABB Industrial IT 800xA > Engineering > Utilities > IPConfig

5. Connect the PC with the controller using a TK212 cable connected to a serial port
on the PC and to the tool port (COM4) on the AC 800M controller.
6. Choose the COM port on the PC by clicking on Settings

Chapter 5 - 5

T308-05 Controller Preparation - RevC

7. Press Connect

The IPConfig status bar will change from Not Connected to Connecting.

8. Press and hold (more than 3 seconds) the Init button on the controller. Release the
init button when the Run LED starts to blink.
After the system-reset button has been pushed it takes approximately 10s before
IPConfig detects the system reset and the status bar changes to System reset
detected waiting for controller start-up.
If the connection fails, a message box will indicate Connect failed, Time-Out. The
reason may be the following:
- The serial cable is not connected correctly.
- The time elapsed between clicking the Connect button and the
system reset of the controller was too long.
9. When IPConfig is connected the status bar will change to Connected.
10. To set the subnet mask, enter the advanced mode by selecting Settings >
Advanced mode in the menu.

Chapter 5 - 6

System 800xA training

11. To modify the IP address in the controller, press Set IP and the text boxes will
show the current controller IP address settings.

When the new IP address has been stored successfully the status bar will show
Controller IP configuration updated.
NOTE!

Do not use IPConfig for a controller when an application

is running in it. IPConfig will delete every application in
the controller.

Ethernet addresses are kept in the flash memory. Always close IPConfig when you are
done with it (Exit button), because IPConfig uses the tool port (Com4) and the rest of
the CPUs channels will be locked.

5.2.3.1 How to Set IP Addresses for Backup CPU

To set the IP address for the backup CPU in a redundant configuration, we do this on
the primary CPU. The conditions are:

Only the upper (existing primary) CPU has power

The RCU Link cable has a connector, which has a label called upper. This
connector is now inserted in the upper CPU.

1. Start the IPConfig tool

2. Press Connect and initialize the controller with the Init button (press and hold
the Init button on the controller and release it when the Run LED starts to blink.

Chapter 5 - 7

T308-05 Controller Preparation - RevC

3. Select Set Backup IP address.

4. Select Ethernet 1 and Obtain an IP address by using default rule (usually

used). Then press Store Interface Settings.

If a redundant Ethernet is going to be used, set up the IP address for the Backup
CPU by selecting Ethernet 2 in the Set Backup IP addresses window. Usually
select Obtain an IP address by using default rule. Then press Store Interface
Settings again.
5. Switch on the power on the backup CPU.
There is no need to set IP address(es) for the backup CPU in Control Builder. The IP
address of the backup CPU CN1 and CN2 ports will only be used for internal
communication between the primary and backup CPUs. When the backup CPU takes
over, it also takes over the primary IP address that is defined in Control Builder. Other
units on the control network will never notice the switchover.

5.3 Basic Network Checks

5.3.1 IPCONFIG Command
A simple tool to check a PCs IP address is a DOS command: IPconfig. To use it, first
enter DOS mode by choosing Run at the Start Menu.

Type in cmd and click OK.

Type in ipconfig and press the Enter button. The computers IP address settings
show up in the DOS window.

Chapter 5 - 9

T308-05 Controller Preparation - RevC

5.3.2 PING Command

A simple tool to check if the network connection between two devices is functioning
well is also a DOS command: Ping. Of course the PCs must be connected to the same
network (quite often a hub/switch) first.
Type ping followed by the IP address and press Enter. If the network connection is
good, it shows reply from IP address:

If the network connection is bad, it shows hardware error or Time out or

some other messages due to different kind of errors.

Checking the network connection with an AC 800M controller is the same as with a
computer. Just ping the AC 800M controllers IP address and review the outcome.

5.3.3 RNRP Network Monitoring

RNRP is a network protocol developed by ABB and handles the node and network
supervision. RNRP quickly detects if a node or redundant network is down.

Network Events and Alarms

RNRP generates System Messages in the alarm list of the following message types:

Connection Down

Connection Up

Node Down

RNRP Network Event Monitor

In PCs, where RNRP is installed, there is a tool called the RNRP Network Monitor.
For all nodes that are connected, it reports if there is a working connection for each
network interface. After the initial overview all changes to the current status will be
reported, for example node up and node down events.
The RNRP Network Monitor is started with a left-click on the RNRP icon in the
Windows system tray.

5.3.4 RNRP Fault Tracer/RNRP Utility

For a more detailed analysis of nodes using RNRP there is a tool called RNRP Fault
Tracer. It is started with a right double-click on the RNRP icon in the system tray or at
Start > Programs > ABB Industrial IT 800xA > System > Network > RNRP Utility.

5.4 Upgrade the AC 800M Firmware

5.4.1 Firmware Basics
A controllers firmware is just like the operating system for a computer; actually a
controller is a simple computer. Each computer is installed with an operating system
when sold, and then if needed, you can upgrade the computers operating system or
install a new one. In SV5.0 and later, you can add controllers without upgrading all
controllers which must be at version 4.0 or 4.1 in the installation, that means all the
controllers with different version firmware can work well with each other in 800xA
system version 5.0.
NOTE!

AC 800M High Integrity Controllers must be upgraded

to Version 4.1

Firmware Upgrade Methods

System 800xA provides two ways to upgrade the AC800M controllers firmware. It
can be done either from the serial cable connected to the tool port (COM4) on the
controller or over Ethernet. The Ethernet method is faster, so the Serial Firmware
upgrade tool is intended to be used only when the Ethernet firmware upgrade
procedure is not available for some reason.

5.4.2 How to Upgrade Using the CBM

The upgrade of the CPU firmware can be done either from the serial line connected to
the toolport (COM4) on your controller or over Ethernet. The Serial Firmware
Upgrade tool is intended to be used as a last resort, if the normal firmware upgrade
procedure, for some reason, fails.
The most comfortable way is to use the Control Builder, because you will be able to
compare the current firmware in the controller with the firmware on the hard disk.
1. Select Remote System.

Chapter 5 - 14

System 800xA training

2. Press Show Firmware Information.

3. Compare the firmware on disk with the firmware in the controller

4. Select the firmware which has to be downloaded and press Download

Firmware.
Note that once the firmware has been upgraded to version 5.0, further controller
upgrades and system upgrades can be done online without shutting down the whole
system.

Chapter 5 - 15

5.4.3 How to Upgrade Using the Serial Link

1. Connect the diagnostic cable TK152 between the engineering workstation com
port and the AC800M controllers diagnostic port COM4.
2. Select Start > Programs > ABB IndustrialIT 800xA > Engineering > Utilities >
Serial Firmware Upgrade.

3. Click on the Connect button.

4. Press and hold (more than 3 seconds) the Init button on the controller. Release the
init button when the Run LED starts to blink.

Chapter 5 - 16

System 800xA training

5. The message System Reset detected will be displayed in the bottom of the window
and shortly afterwards the available firmware revisions are displayed. Select the
correct firmware version and click on Upgrade to start the transfer.

6. At this point the power must not be disturbed until the transfer is complete.

Chapter 5 - 17

7. When complete, press the Init button to restart the controller and click on OK
to close the window.

5.5 When to Set IP Address and Download Firmware

To summarize, setting IP address & downloading firmware for an AC800M controller
need to be done when a new controller is taken from the warehouse and put into
operation. Normally this happens when the hardware is set up at the beginning of a
project, or when a controller replacement is needed.
In some cases, only the IP address setting is needed when a controller has the correct
firmware. In the next chapter, the faster method for firmware upgrade will be
demonstrated in the Control Builder tools. Since this method uses the Ethernet for
communication with the controller, the IPConfig utility is still necessary first.
