Day 1: Intrams

SC and SG spearhead Palarong Rural 2011

Despite the cloudy sky and light rain, the excitement and raging fighting spirit of the
Ruralites were not dampened, as this years Sports Club (SC) alongside the Student Government
(SG) launched the start of Palarong Rural 2011.

Ruralites assembled early at the UPLB Carabao Park for the parade at the morning.
Heading towards the Baker Hall, cheers, chants and yells were actively heard as the SC and SG
officers encouraged fellow Ruralites to cheer for their batch. Upon arriving at the Baker Hall,
batches assembled to their respective places. A lively aerobics dance was led by the Filipiniana
Dance Troupe as a warm-up. Afterwards, the opening program commenced.

Pauline Arejola, current SG president, led the prayer while the Glee Club sang the
National Anthem. Ara Caballero and Gian Arejola opened the program as the masters of
ceremony with high energy, asking each batch to showcase their yells and chants. Prof. Liza C.
Carascal gave the opening remarks, while Aleli Esther Domingo, OIC Dean of CAS, was invited
as guest speaker for the day.

The highlight of the program, the Mr. and Ms. Intrams pageant, followed. Freshies
cheered for their representatives, Ardy Gonzalvo and Les Gracia. It was cut short when the

newly-elected chancellor Dr. Rex Victor O. Cruz arrived. Dr. Cruz was invited to give a short
talk to the enthusiastic Ruralites regarding the essence and spirit of the event. The Mr. and Ms.
Intrams pageant continued with the representatives from the Sophies, Xandy Acosta and Genesis
Corpuz. Juniors cheered for Daniel Pisano and Isabel Ramos, while Seniors Jico Ambrocio and
Joanne Catibog competed for their batch.

Special awards were also given out during the program. Freshies were awarded as the
Biggest Delegation. Seniors won as the Most Disciplined batch. As the judges concluded their
decision, Daniel Pisano and Joanne Catibog were awarded Mr. and Ms. Intrams 2011
respectively.

Basketball captains for each batch were called forth for the ceremonial toss with
Chancellor Cruz. Afterwards, batch presidents and year-level coordinators came in front for the
annual flag raising ceremony. Alyssa Cruz, current SC president, then led the oath-taking for the
players. The last event for the program was the torch lighting, which was carried by Dyastin
Adarlo (Freshman), Xandy Acosta (Sophomore), Levi Matba (Junior), and Abrielle Gonzalvo
(Senior). Palarong Rural 2011 then commenced.

A more intense sense of exhilaration bubbled up inside the Baker Hall as the minor sports
finished, for it was time for the main event of the day: the Cheer Dance competition. The hall
was filled with lots of people, parents, families, and coaches alike, waiting for the long-awaited
competition. Sophomores were first to perform, followed by the juniors, freshmen and lastly, the
seniors.

The cheer dance competition also had special awards. Sophomores were awarded as the
Best in Yells and Chants, the seniors as the Best in Costume, and the juniors as the Best in
Choreography.

Juniors defended their title as champions, while sophomores snagged the 1 st runner-up
position, followed by the seniors and the freshmen. Judges were Prof. Naomi Enriquez, Mr.
Marvin Umali, and Mr. Jade Mark Alvarez.
