SAFA Checklist In-Depth

Reminder of Annex 6 Part 1:

Operators shall ensure that:

each aeroplane they operate is maintained in an airworthy

condition
a flight shall not be commenced until flight preparation forms
have been completed certifying that the pilot-in-command is
satisfied that:
a) the aeroplane is airworthy
That means that all references for C items are based on this
sentence, so references are airworthiness documents

C01 GENERAL EXTERNAL CONDITION

Inspecting Instructions
Check general condition of the airframe:
 Corrosion
Cleanliness (related to the ability to inspect the aircraft)
 Legibility of markings
Note: markings may be in languages other than English
Note: ICAO does not require that break-in points need to be marked (however:
if such markings are being used, they should be according to a certain format)
Note: When inspecting markings and placards, inspectors should differentiate
between those required by ICAO and those required by the manufacturer
 Presence of ice, snow, frost
 Windshield delamination,
Loose or missing fasteners and rivets
Presence and condition of the antennas, of the static dischargers
Condition and functionality of the exterior lights etc
Note: Before raising a finding, the inspector should make sure that the affected
light(s) are required for the type of flight (according to the MEL). Unserviceable
lights, not required for the type of flight should be reported as a general remark
only

A6-I-6.2.4.1 - If areas of the fuselage suitable for break-in by rescue crews in
emergency are marked on an aeroplane such areas shall be marked as shown
below (see figure following). The colour of the markings shall be red or
yellow, and if necessary they shall be outlined in white to contrast with the
background.
A7-3.3.1 - On heavier-than-air aircraft, the marks shall appear once on the
lower surface of the wing structure. They shall be located on the left half of
the lower surface of the wing structure unless they extend across the whole of

Presence of ice ( adverse weather operation )

Example

A 310: ICE ACCRETION ON UPPER WING SURFACE

LIMITED AT OUTER TANKS SURFACE
If noticed during the turn around, and if it is NOT POSSIBLE TO
DE-ICE the surface before the next take off, the following procedure
should be followed :
Do not exceed a maximum thickness of 3 mm.
Apply a penalty of 1 ton to take-off weight.
Consider an increase of 1 percent in fuel consumption.

A6-I-4.3.5.4 - A flight to be planned or expected to operate in suspected
or known ground icing conditions shall not take off unless the aeroplane
has been inspected for icing and, if necessary, has been given appropriate
de-icing/anti-icing treatment.
Accumulation of ice or other naturally occurring contaminants shall be
removed so that the aeroplane is kept in an airworthy condition prior to
take-off.

Checklist 2
Inspection of the landing gear tires
Operation content and technical requirements (TR)
Examine landing gear tires and make sure that there
is:
- the absence of tires slipping in relation to the drum.
Red control stripes on the drum and tire should be
connected (pic. 1);
- the correct position of the red mark light point.
Light point mark with diameter (18-20) mm on the
tire and chamber valve should be placed on the wheel
radius line;
- the absence of mechanic damage: exfoliation,
puncture, cut with the length more than 40 mm with
the damage of more than 2 cord layers, and also
abrasion of coating rubber with the damage of the first
cord layer.
Note. For the tire reconstruction selection use the
tolerances, stated in Instruction : 5.1-21 from
17.03.73.

Pages 10-12
Laboriousness, person/hour
Operations done in case of technical Control
requirements discrepancy
In the case of tire removal in relation
to wheel drum (red control stripes do
not coincide) check the air pressure
in the tire chamber; it should be:
-for the main wheels (7,5-0,1+0,2)
kgs/sm2
(0,736 -0,0098 +0,196) MPa;
- for the nose gear (-5 5,5) kgs/sm2
(0,49-0,54 MPa).
Examine the chamber valve, replace
the wheel if necessary.
If the light point and the valve are
placed on different radii, take off the
wheel give it for the tire
reassembling.
Change the tire.
