WAR OF WORLDCRAFT
ADVENTURE BACKGROUND
The cyborg supervillain Download has a problem.
Normal humans are becoming more and more skilled with
their personal computers. Massively Multiplayer Online
Roleplaying Games (MMORPGS) are becoming a way of
life, taking up far too much bandwidth and making it
more difficult for him to achieve his evil schemes or to
even pirate Terminator films!
Download, however, has a plan. He will infiltrate the
latest hot MMORPG release and use it to take over the
minds of millions of users, then trap them in robot bodies
of his own design. In the past hes used this technique
freelance to break villains out of prison and to place them
into robot bodies so that they can achieve their own evil
schemes. This time hes in it for himself! His plan is to
hold the MMORPG companies hostage using their own
players, threatening to destroy them with a robot army of
gigantic proportions unless they pay a ransom. Once the
company pays, however, Download plans to use the
money to create an even larger robot army powered by the
minds of crazed MMORPG users so that he can conquer
the entire world and, at last, enjoy unlimited bandwidth
in peace.
As the original bodies of his hostages start to
deteriorate from lack of Mountain Dew and Cheesy Puffs,
it is up to the heroes to find Download and his mind
transfer machine before they all starve to death (though,
admittedly, in some cases this could take some time). Can
the heroes save millions of online roleplayers and bring
Download to justice?
This brief adventure, in three parts, introduces
people to the HERO System 6th Edition, gives them a
chance to roleplay characters, and introduces them to the
combat system.
The adventure begins with a release party in a local
Maxi-Mart where robots attack the participants during
the store release of the latest online supplement for
Megaworld: An Experience Unlike Any Other. During
the fight one of the designers of Megaworld is kidnapped
because Download didnt have time to hack his system
and get the keycodes for the upgrade while he was
building his robots.
The PCs must track Download to his lair, defeat his
robots and Bytes (MMORPG Data Constructs), and save
gamers everywhere from a horrible fate.

Additional Plot Complications

1)

Something went wrong with one of Downloads latest

schemes to put someone into a robot body, and the
person died as the result of Megaworld coming
online. If this person is somehow related to a player
character, this can make an excellent additional
roleplaying opportunity, as it should be unclear at
first that Download had anything to do with that
death.
Since Download wants revenge against the
MMORPG companies, it could make him a more
sympathetic villain.

2)

Download downloads the PCs into robot bodies of

themselves. This can be great if you want to run a
one-shot where the people dont have any powers. In
this model, the scenario goes haywire and Download
doesnt have total control over his robots. The PCs
goal here is to defeat Downloads plan and return to
their own bodies.

3)

The PCs robot bodies short out and fling their

consciousnesses into an MMORPG world of the GMs
choosing. The goal here is simply to survive in a
world of glory hounds, achievement stealers, and
braggadocios. Can the PCs get out, or worse, are they
trapped here forever?

4)

Some gamers dont want to be saved. They will

desperately try to find Download during or after the
scenario and beg him to place them permanently into
robot bodies in the MMORPG world. Can the heroes
convince these people that Download is evil and
insane?

Some Things to Remember

1)

Robots cant cast spells. If one of the PCs is a mage,

trapping him in a robot body is cruel and unusual
punishment. He may be able to manage a few things
which seem like magic (such as hurling lightning
bolts), but he wont actually be anything more than a
glorified energy projector with a fancy cape.

2)

Computer Programming from afar doesnt work. If

one of the PCs has a power that allows him greater
technomantic control than Download, assume that
Download has some means of preventing the PC from
using that ability (it doesnt work in his robot body,
something goes wrong with his powers, or the like).

3)

In a true campaign, Download can endlessly return to

plague the PCs as long as theres electrical
equipment nearby when he falls. He can have
replacement robot bodies stashed all over the world.
This is not normally on his character sheet, but to
make him an ongoing menace, it is an ability he could
develop.

PART ONE: MAYHEM AT THE MAXI-MART

In this section, Download attacks the Maxi-Mart
during a demonstration of Megaworld, the popular
superhero Massively Multiplayer Online Roleplaying
Game. Downloads goal is to capture Jason Watts Long
and take the MMORPG company hostage, along with
most of its userbase. Then, once the MMORPG company
has paid the ransom, he will begin transferring the
userbase into an army of robots that will conquer as much
of the campaign city and the surrounding lands as
possible to demonstrate his power. Download has no
illusions about his scheme. He knows that if he gets this
far the government will send every available superhero,
military unit, and agent to combat the threat, but he is
confident that his scheme will succeed.
About Megaworld, the MMORPG
Megaworld is the most popular superhero MMORPG
on Earth. Its popularity comes from the fact that it is
based on the tabletop Hero System published by Hero
Games, a highly accurate simulation of real superhero
combat. (In fact, the game is so popular that some
superheroes have already sued the publisher of
Megaworld in order to prevent people from using (and
probably abusing) their names and images in an online
environment, while others have licensed themselves to
Megaworld for precisely that purpose.) Megaworld has
several city servers that represent different real-world
cities and, as the heroes of the online world have their
various adventures, their actions affect the worlds
megaplot, leading to twice-yearly plot updates that may
or may not reflect what happens in the real world.
In Megaworlds history there have only been two
glitches. The first occurred when Hero Games switched
tabletop editions and several characters exploded due to
their inability to maintain their abilities, and the second
when one of the Megaworld programs became a living
entity and tried to conquer the MMORPG. Fortunately,
thousands of virtual heroes banded together to stop it,
and it was prevented from respawning every thirty
minutes by a conveniently placed delete protocol inserted
by a particularly clever programmer.
Unfortunately for the PCs, Download is an avid
player of Megaworld, is well aware of the location of the
delete protocol, and has built his virtual base right on top
of it, enabling him to siphon off programming power from
the entity.
Its Mega! Its the World! Its Megaworld!
More ultra-powerful than even the cool powers and
abilities of the characters are the minds of Megaworld
marketing executives. Megaworld is designed to appeal to
all kinds of superhero roleplayers. They have servers
devoted to dark vigilantes. They have servers devoted to
the Golden Age. They have servers dedicated to
misunderstood mutant heroes. In fact, they have servers
devoted to every type of superhero genre conceivable! (The
Golden and Silver Age servers are kept separate due to
the dangers inherent in contaminating the genre with
moral complexity.) Periodically, Megaworld dispatches its

top programmers and scenario designers to various prerelease locations so that people can get to meet them.
(Public relations have always been a priority for
Megaworlds publishers.) Thus, on the day that Download
is going to capture Jason Watts Long, instead of being
safely ensconced at Megaworld Headquarters in
Dinwiddie, Pennsylvania, the top Megaworld programmer
is at a Maxi-Mart in your campaign city.
Getting the Heroes Involved
Getting the heroes to go to Maxi-Mart might be a
problem for certain character types. A technological hero
could be enough of a geek to be playing MegaWorld, or
any hero could be a fan of MMORPGs. A poor hero might
be looking for a cheap tent that he can sleep in instead of
renting an apartment, or it might be the closest thing to a
local supermarket for several heroes. An outdoor hero
might need new camping equipment, or a fishing rod, or
any sort of unusual appliance. A dark vigilante might be
tailing the NPC from the mob detailed after the map key.
If worst comes to worst, allow heroes to be passing by the
Maxi-Mart from the outside after Downloads attack
begins. However, its far better to get a little setup
roleplay with the people inside the Maxi-Mart first.
Downloads Kidnap Attempt
Download will begin his kidnap attempt at 4:01 PM,
one minute after the scheduled release time. This should
be the moment of highest gamer frenzy, when the most
innocent people are clustered around the Megaworld
booth. Children will have had enough time to get out of
school. Young geeks will be out of work early. Parents
desperate to get the latest expansion for their eager teen
will be on hand. Over a thousand people should be in the
line to get to the booth. If the heroes arent careful, a lot of
people could get hurt or killed. A timeline of the kidnap
attempt is outlined below.
3:45

3:50

3:56

Downloads delivery van pulls up to the loading

bay at the Maxi-Mart. Download, disguised as a
truck driver, will hand his fake paperwork over to
the receiving manager.
Download opens the truck, KOs the receiving
manager, and then unloads his robots. He then
leaves the scene. If a PC pursues Download, let
him. Download should be more than a match for
any single hero. He will beat the hero to a pulp and
then leave.
Download finishes unloading and departs as per
above. A five-minute countdown is started on a
timer in Downloads head. The eight robots take up
positions, one at each of the two stairwells and six
right outside the inside door to the receiving area.
Any employees who discover the robots will be
swiftly subdued with the robots Ultrasonic Wave
power. Download also has four Bytes with him.
These are physical/digital constructs made out of
psychoelectrical energy siphoned from the

WAR OF WORLDCRAFT
4:01

MMORPG. These will move to assist the robots on

phase 3 of combat.
The attack begins.

If Download is discovered prior to the timed start of

the attack, his robots will attack immediately and try to
kidnap Jason Watts Long (see below). Run the fight
normally, only without as many innocents to protect.
Downloads Assault Tactics
Downloads robots will head straight for Jason Watts
Long and deliver a series of attacks designed to separate
his mind from his body. The heroes might not know what
to do at first, as the robots beams have little to no
physical effect on their target initially.
If the heroes engage the robots quickly, half of them
will fight a holding action against the heroes,
concentrating firepower on them one at a time. If the
heroes dont quickly concentrate fire on the robots that
are shooting them, the heroes may not make it to the final
battle.
When the four Bytes arrive on phase 3, they will try
to pin the heroes down further, allowing the capture of
Jason Watts Longs mind. After the objective is secured,
the heroes will be forced into an all-out battle for their
lives as the robots and digital constructs work to make
sure that the heroes wont be around to stop Downloads
scheme.
If the heroes are pursuing Download, he will unleash
the Delivery Vanbot on the Maxi-Mart in order to delay
them and get away with Jason Watts Long. Otherwise,
the Delivery Vanbot flees to one of Downloads other
bases.
This is a tough fight, and one that wont be easy to
win unless the heroes think smart. Theyll need to work
as a team. If they dont, the robots superior teamwork
will likely overwhelm them. If the PCs get transformed
and placed into the MMORPG world, see the Into the VR
World section below.
If Jason Watts Long is successfully kidnapped (and
he should be) move to Part II.
Maxi-Mart
The Maxi-Mart is divided into three sections: the
main selling floor, the warehouse, and the elevated
offices. It is important to keep track of the elevated offices
during combat in the Maxi-Mart. People can be knocked
into and out of them and they have a clear view of most of
the selling floor. Security officers regularly patrol the
Maxi-Mart, but they are unarmed and totally incapable of
dealing with the threat that Download and his robots
present.
There are dozens of innocents shopping in the MaxiMart, especially around the Megaworld release booth. Do
not forget that these people are here. The PCs should care
a great deal about them not getting killed. Downloads
robots, however, have no such scruples.
It is important to remember that Maxi-Mart has a
vast number of products, and many of them can be used
in extremely creative ways. Allow the players to be
inventive. Statistics are provided for many sample objects
within the Maxi-Mart, but feel free to use your

imagination to spice up the Maxi-Mart and make it your

own. The NPCs of the Maxi-Mart are only nominally
fleshed out, but several plot options are provided within
to make your game more interesting.
Maxi-Mart is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. It
never closes. Meeting the needs of the entire world behind
its friendly sliding and revolving doors, Maxi-Mart brings
peace, harmony, and low prices to people all over the
globe! With Maxi-Mart, youll never run out of your
favorite things.
Megaworld and Maxi-Mart turned out to be a perfect
match. Megaworlds CEO cut a deal with Maxi-Mart to
exclusively release its upgrades and patches one day early
in all Maxi-Marts. As a result, whenever a new patch for
Megaworld is released, Maxi-Mart is jammed with
customers.
The manager of this Maxi-Mart is Peter Broadhurst,
a man who is about five foot six and two hundred and
sixty pounds. He loves bacon, sausage, and cheese, and
his wife, Ellen, is almost as heavy as he is. More
information on Peter is located in the Managers Office
section, along with the other executives of the store. They
have no ability to deal with supervillainy either and will
try to vacate the premises as swiftly as possible. However,
this may not be possible, as there are already robots
blocking the stairs.
Plot Option: Peter Broadhurst is one of many aliases
for a shapeshifting supervillain. He knows Download is
going to attack and is gathering information on the PCs,
either for one of his own sinister plans or at the behest of
someone else.
The Maxi-Mart itself is a prefab construction job. The
walls of Maxi-Mart are not particularly tough, having
only 5 PD, 10 ED, 3 BODY. The roof is slightly less tough,
having 4 PD, 8 ED, 3 BODY. The office and windows have
3 nPD, 3 nED, 2 BODY. Will this fight cause a great deal
of damage to the Maxi-Mart? You bet. Is that part of
superhero combat since time began? Oh, yeah!
There is a massive air conditioner on the roof of the
Maxi-Mart directly above Area 40. If this area is
significantly damaged, the entire unit may fall onto the
floor below, crushing anything in its path. This will do
12d6 of damage to anything beneath it. The airconditioning unit has 9 PD, 8 ED, 15 BODY. It weighs 2
tons and requires a 35 STR to lift it.
There are several rolling racks located around the
clothing area with clothes hanging from them. These
metal racks with wheels are not very sturdy and have 3
PD, 2 ED, 3 BODY.
The Maxi-Mart is 12 meters high. The warehouse
section is 6 meters high, and the elevated offices above
that are 4 meters high.
Maxi-Mart has a sprinkler system that affects the
entire building. If a fire alarm is tripped or pulled,
everything in the building is suddenly made very wet.
Powers that dont work in water will suddenly cease to
function. The floor will become very slippery, and anyone
still standing on it will be at -1 OCV and DCV. Puddles
may, if the PCs are creative or the GM is feeling mean,
expand the effect of electrical attacks.

MICHAEL SATRAN
ATTENTION MAXI-MART SHOPPERS!
If your PCs are wandering around or shopping in
the Maxi-Mart (or even work there), some normal NPCs
are provided below. Each PC who starts inside the
Maxi-Mart should have an encounter with one of these
NPCs before combat starts.
Kate Baxley, Single Mother of Six: Kate Baxley goes
shopping with all the little Baxleys, and every
single one of them wants to push her shopping cart.
Kate is very beleaguered and will ask enterprising
heroes who are handsome and single if they would
like to watch her children. Kate is recently divorced
and works two jobs just to make ends meet, but
what she really wants is someone to be a father to
her six children. Shes pretty, in a cheerful,
roundish sort of way. The Baxley children are very
rowdy and obnoxious, and Kate is constantly
disciplining one or the other of them.
Phillip K. Ellison, Obsessed Service Manager: Phil
is viewed as the best manager on the floor.
Unfortunately, hes also the most annoying. Phil
has semi-long scraggly hair tied back in a ponytail,
a slightly sunken jaw, and blue eyes. He has a
goatee and sideburns and is always excessively
friendly. He wears a typical Maxi-Mart managers
uniform. Phil is everywhere. If he even thinks that
someone might have a service problem, hes all over
it. This gets him into a little trouble, but little old
ladies, the absent-minded, and people who are
down on their luck who are used to having more
money absolutely love him. The PCs, however,
might just find him annoying. Can I help you?
isnt just Phils tag line its his life.
Louis The Big Toe Falconi, Mobster: Louis Falconi
is a notorious mobster and thug, but nonetheless,
he finds the meat department of the Maxi-Mart to
be high quality. He buys all his meat here and
enjoys taunting police officers who follow him with
his packages, teasing them with phrases like
Looking for someone? and showing them his cut
of eye roast. Louis is a thick, heavyset man with a
little male pattern baldness, a beard, and a fairsized gut. He always wears a custom-tailored suit
but speaks in a thick, crass Italian accent. It is up
to the GM whether police officers are following
Falconi during the scenario.

Roger Luxbaugh, Gun Enthusiast Who Hunts

Anything Legal: Roger can usually be found in the
sporting goods section, talking with clerks who
know far less about guns than he does. When the
robots attack, Roger will load up a rifle and try to
take part in the fight. Unfortunately, hes really no
match for robots with highly advanced electroweaponry. Roger has an OCV and DCV of 6 and 2
Combat Skill Levels with Firearms, and is
considered a Competent Normal. However, he has
absolutely no armor whatsoever and is likely to be
killed if the heroes dont save him. Roger is the sort
of man who hunts his own dinner, despises most
city people, and only comes into the city when he
needs ammunition or supplies.
Todd Pierce, Massive Overshopper: Todd has a cart
filled with everything nobody needs, just because
he thinks he needs it. Currently, he is headed to
the cashier where he will leave it, saying he just
needs to fill one more cart with things. Todd looks
like a scruffy madman, even though hes really a
certified public accountant, and dresses in cheap
jeans and a tee shirt. He is extremely hyperactive
and overreacts to everything, especially things he
thinks he needs and absolutely has to have.
Jorgi Van Der Voot, Evil Geneticist in Disguise:
Jorgi Van Der Voot is shopping for groceries, trying
to lose himself in the vagaries of Maxi-Mart where
superheroes are unlikely to notice him. Currently,
he is armed with several devices to protect himself.
Jorgi will flee the scene as soon as combat starts.
Place Jorgi somewhere on the map where a player
has a chance to notice him. This can produce a
number of plot seeds later, especially if Jorgi thinks
the PC recognized him. Jorgi should work for a
large agency involved with global conspiracies of
some sort, but not be so notorious that the PCs
must capture him instead of dealing with
Download. Choose gear that allows Jorgi to escape
easily. He shouldnt be the focus of the adventure,
but if the PCs track him down, he may be willing to
help them in exchange for amnesty (see Part 2).
This option works best if the PCs have no hero with
technical skills.

Parking Lot: This enormous parking lot is currently

mostly filled with cars of various sizes and shapes.
See the HERO System 6th Edition rulebook for a
general guideline on how tough and well-defended
these vehicles are. Some PCs may wish to use the
vehicles as weapons by going outside and bringing
them inside to throw at robots and Bytes. Let them.
The H symbols mark handicapped parking spaces.
Concrete Barrier Poles: These poles are 1 meter
high and have 6 PD, 10 ED, 12 BODY. They can be
ripped out of the ground and used as weapons. Their
main purpose is to prevent people from driving
vehicles full tilt into the Maxi-Mart and either
detonating explosives or robbing the place blind at
gunpoint. However, no one has ever attacked the
Maxi-Mart until now.
Front Entry: This area has two revolving doors and
three automatic sliding doors. There are arrows on
the floor indicating which way to enter and which
way to exit. Many people dont obey them, which
leads to an incredible amount of chaos in the
entryway. The revolving doors are large heavy
masses of metal and glass with 5 PD, 4 ED, 7 BODY.
The sliding doors have 4 PD, 3 ED, 5 BODY.

4)

Employee Parking: This is the employee parking

area along the side of the building. Normal parking
spreads out behind it. Employee parking is directly
next to the loading dock.

5)

Loading Dock: This is a loading/unloading area for

the warehouse in Area 6. Currently, there is an 18wheeler being offloaded here. Download has delivered
two robots inside crates inside this 18-wheeler, robots
which will swiftly activate and move to cut off the
stairways leading to the offices. Use the statistics for
a large truck in the HERO System 6th Edition to
represent this vehicle.

6)

Warehouse: The large warehouse next to the loading

dock contains all incoming and outgoing goods that
enter and leave the Maxi-Mart. There is a heavy-duty
trash compactor in one corner (9 PD, 8 ED, 10
BODY). The warehouse is filled with various boxes,
barrels, and crates. If the PCs choose to use these as
weapons, use the following statistics: Small Box (1
nPD, 1 nED, 1 BODY), Medium Box (2 nPD, 1 nED, 2
BODY), Large Box (2 nPD, n2 ED, 3 BODY), Small
Barrel (2 PD, 4 ED, 2 BODY), Medium Barrel (3 PD,
5 ED, 3 BODY), Large Barrel (4 PD, 6 ED, 4 BODY),
Small Crate (2 PD, 2 ED, 2 BODY), Medium Crate (3
PD, 2 ED, 3 BODY), Large Crate (4 PD, 3 ED, 4
BODY). Feel free to modify these numbers. A crate
filled with stainless steel wrenches will have a
slightly higher BODY score than a crate filled with
sweaters. Use creativity when determining what is
inside the crates. There are two stairwells in the
warehouse that lead up to the elevated offices, and a

single massive roll-up bay door that opens to allow

carts and personnel to move merchandise out to the
sales floor.
7)

Side Exits: These two fire exit doors have 3 PD, 3

ED, 3 BODY. Opening these exits without first
disengaging the safety bar sets off the fire alarms.

8)

Ladies Bathrooms: These rooms are well-designed,

functional, and serviceable ladies bathrooms. The
bathroom sinks are a single unit. Forcing the unit
from the wall creates a massive weapon with 8 PD, 8
ED, 12 BODY if the PC can lift 4 tons or more. Each
toilet has 6 PD, 6 ED, 4 BODY should a PC be willing
to rip them out. The stalls have 2 PD, 1 ED, 2 BODY.

9)

Mens Bathrooms: For all stall and sink

information, see the Ladies Bathrooms above. A
mens urinal has 5 PD, 5 ED, 3 BODY if wrenched out
of the wall to use as a weapon.

10) Rear Entry: This locked entryway is only opened in

the event of an emergency or a major shopping event.
Currently, the Rear Entry is open. It otherwise has
the same characteristics as the Front Entryway, with
the exception of the floor arrows.
11) Security Stations: Each of these entrances has a
Security Station with a security guard next to it, even
at the locked entryway. The security guards are
merely Normals who check peoples belongings and
receipts. The station contains a metal detector above
the door. This means that heroes who have a lot of
traditional guns may have trouble getting into the
Maxi-Mart. The security guards will ask all people
who carry firearms to check in their weapons;
however, they are no match for superheroes. Heroes
who have a good reputation may be subtly allowed
to carry their firearms, especially if they look like
dress-up actors for the Megaworld release or try to
pass themselves off as such. The station itself has 3
PD, 3 ED, 4 BODY.
12) Maxicarts: This is where Maxi-Mart stores its
Maxicarts. Even though many chains of stores keep
their carts outside, too many people were stealing the
carts, so the carts are kept in a roped-off area near
the entrance. The metal poles holding the ropes have
3 PD, 3 ED, 7 BODY, and are made of heavy brass.
The carts have 2 PD, 2 ED, 2 BODY.
13) Cash Registers: The cash register and their stands
at Maxi-Mart are bolted to the floor, and are excellent
places to seek cover behind. They have 5 PD, 4 ED, 11
BODY. However, it only requires a 30 STR to lift one
up, so they are also excellent weapons for strong
characters to use.
14) Megaworld Booth: Right now the Megaworld Booth
is surrounded with people. Hundreds of people are
trying to get up to the front to get the special free
Invincible helmet of Captain Invincible. There

WAR OF WORLDCRAFT
arent enough to go around. The booth has four
beleaguered employees inside handing out free
helmets as swiftly as they possibly can. (If one of the
PCs is Captain Invincible, he can either be at the
booth helping or, if he is currently suing Megaworld
for copyright infringement, he might be there
protesting!) The Megaworld booth has numerous play
stations where people can play Megaworld, and there
is a line for those as well. The stations have 5 PD, 4
ED, 3 BODY. Unfortunately, the actual booth has
much less, a whopping 4 PD, 4 ED, 2 BODY. Plywood
looks impressive, but it is still just plywood. Also in
the booth is Megaworld programmer Jason Watts
Long, the architect of Megaworlds latest patch. Jason
is a Talented Normal with an 18 INT and a Computer
Programming skill of 15-. Jason has constructed a
patch along with a computer keycode that will make
it impossible for any account to be hacked.
Unfortunately, these keycode broadcasters wont be
online for another 48 hours. Since Download is
capable of hacking almost anything, he cant afford to
have his scheme derailed by Jasons upgrade. Shortly
after the PCs have gotten acquainted with the MaxiMart, Download will attack the Maxi-Mart and try to
kidnap Jason.
15-26) Supermarket Shelves: Maxi-Mart comes with a
full-service supermarket, and these aisles are no
exception. They are packed with various foodstuffs,
canned goods, and other human-needs necessities not
covered in the other areas of the Maxi-Mart. The
shelving units themselves are heavy but not
unliftable. It requires a 50 STR to lift them, and they
have 9 PD, 9 ED, but only 3 BODY. Needless to say,
all the material on the shelves will be upended in a
massive storm of chaos if a PC attempts this. Anyone
landing or remaining in the area surrounding the
upended shelving unit, provided they are standing on
the ground, receives a -2 to DEX rolls. This penalty
only applies to people standing on the ground. Make
up which aisle is which based on whats going on in
your local supermarket.
27) Freezer Bays: These freezer bays each have their
own cooling compressors, and as a backup system,
they are also hooked into the air-conditioning system
on the top of the roof. There are a total of eight
freezer bays. All of them contain various frozen foods
and goods. When full (usually), each freezer has 4 PD,
3 ED, 7 BODY. If emptied, the freezer has only 6
BODY. It takes a 30 STR to lift one of the freezer
units.
28) Butcher Shop: This is a fully-stocked butcher shop,
complete with a butcher and pre-cut cuts of meat.
The meat cases have 4 PD, 3 ED, 11 BODY, as they
are very long and heavy. The butcher has a few
hatchets for cutting meat behind the counter that
count as d6 HKAs. In the hands of the right
superhero, however, they could prove devastating.
The Butcher Shop is next to Sporting Goods and, for a
price, the butchers will process animals hunters bring
in.

29) Home Appliances: This area is filled with various

home appliances, from vacuum cleaners to blenders
to Bjorg Bjornsen Meat-Reducing Grills. The average
appliance here has 2-3 PD, 1-3 ED, 1-4 BODY.
Optional Plot Seed: Bjorg Bjornsen MeatReducing Grills are a sinister plot by evil tentacled
monsters from beyond the stars.
30) Plastic Furniture: This area is filled with lawn
chairs, plastic furniture, and cheap cushions. Nothing
in this area is particularly resilient. The average
object has 1-2 PD, 1-2 ED, 2-3 BODY. There are a lot
of them though.
31) Ladies Clothing: This is one of the largest areas of
the store, containing womens clothing in all shapes
and sizes. There are four fitting rooms in the center,
and huge piles of clothes in the entryways. There are
eight racks and twelve tables. Each rack has 3 PD, 3
ED, 3 BODY, and each table has 5 PD, 4 ED, 5
BODY. The tables are bolted to the floor, and require
a 25 STR to uproot and use.
32) Menswear: The menswear area has the same kinds
of racks and tables as ladieswear, but there are only
four racks and six tables. Its about half the size of
the womens area and has bigger fitting rooms.
33) Sporting Goods: This area is filled with athletic
equipment, athletic shoes, and a medium-sized gun
shop. The gun shop is assumed to have several guns
from the HERO System 6th Edition rulebook in the
case. None of the guns should have actual military
applications. The gun case itself has 5 PD, 5 ED, and
6 BODY. Other objects such as archery equipment,
lawn darts, and horseshoues might be important in
this area. Hockey sticks and baseball bats do +2d6 of
Hand-to-Hand damage. A large cluster of footballs,
baseballs, or basketballs spread on the floor will give
a -2 to DEX rolls for anything standing in the area.
34) Pun Kee Donuts: This donut shop is owned by Chun
Hung Xiao, an enterprising and charming Chinese
man slowly creating a chain of donut shops that
feature weird Asian-flavored donuts. Hes been able
to slowly get into Maxi-Marts in the local area by
charging less for licensing agreements. Donut flavors
include Battered Egg Drop, Red Bean (a very sweet
and very popular donut), Wasabi, Red Pepper, and
General Tsos Chocolate Frosted. (Note: Many of
these donuts, in particular the Red Bean and the
General Tsos Frosted, will immediately activate the
Complications of anyone who is a diabetic within a
few seconds.) Chun is an excellent businessman but
despises the owner of Big Johns Texas Wieners for
rejecting his Asian heritage. The oven is a massive
construct that openly displays baking donuts. It has 5
PD, 8 ED, 12 BODY. The shop also serves tea and
coffee, as well as a few unusual Asian sandwiches.
The Panda Bear Claws (bear claws covered in black
and white frosting) are also very popular. The store
front itself has 5 PD, 6 ED, 4 BODY, and requires a
35 STR to lift, though many children will be angry if
a superhero hurls their donuts across the mart.

MICHAEL SATRAN
35) Big Johns Texas Wieners: Big Johns Texas
Wieners serves hot, tasty Texas Wieners, which may
well be the best Texas wieners in the world. Big
John is actually Richard Wang, an American-born
Chinese with a taste for hot dogs. Richard Wang is a
short, stocky man who will not admit his name except
under duress or to the proper authorities. When
asked if he is Big John under such circumstances,
he will tell them the truth. Would you buy Texas
wieners from a guy named Wang? The Texas Weiner
fryers have 4 PD, 7 ED, 5 BODY, but if the PCs are
lucky enough to grab one while the fryers are on,
burning grease has a nasty effect on just about
everything, assuming that the PC can stand the heat
of grabbing the fryer. Burning grease deals 1d6 of
physical killing damage to anything it comes in
contact with for four phases of contact. Characters
that are immune to heat or fire may freely lift the
fryers; however, others may take 2d6 NND and
possibly suffer minor burns. Spread on the ground,
the grease gives a -3 DEX penalty to anyone who
steps into the area. The storefront of Big Johns Texas
Wieners has 5 PD, 6 ED, 4 BODY.
36) Cafeteria: The cafeteria is a long pick-your-ownplate-of-foods tradition of Maxi-Mart that stretches
back to its origins in the American South. Maxi-Mart
cafeterias are clean, well staffed, and obey all federal
laws. While a lot of the more exotic foods are not so
wonderful, traditional Southern classics like fried
chicken and collard greens are some of the best that
your PCs will ever taste. For their deep fat fryers, use
the rules from Big Johns Texas Wieners. The
cafeteria stations are not on wheels, and have 4 PD, 5
ED, 5 BODY. The stove and its adjacent oven have 5
PD, 8 ED, 6 BODY, the grill has 6 PD, 9 ED, 5 BODY,
and the dishwashing unit is a massive unit with 7
PD, 10 ED, 7 BODY. There is a separate cafeteria
emergency entrance and exit (Area 7) in the back of
the kitchen area.
37) Books and Video: This full-size book and video store
also contains many of the latest musical hits.
Bookcases have 3 PD, 2 ED, 3 BODY. All of the
versions of video and books here are special MaxiMart-censored editions. If one of the player
characters is an author, make sure at least one of his
novels appears here in an edited form. If one of the
player characters is a musician, make sure that all of
the characters albums appear here in clean
versions. This can be exceptionally funny if the
character is a sexy swinger or a foul-mouthed rapper.
38) Toys: This area is filled with all sorts of childrens
toys, from the famous Zargo the Zapper to Barbixon,
the Supermodel from Space! Most toys are easily
destroyed; however the shelves here are truly
massive constructs with 6 PD, 7 ED, 5 BODY.
39) Health Products: This is the Health Products area.
Several health products in various common forms can
easily be mixed by a skilled inventor or commando to
produce fairly unpleasant effects. A skilled gadgeteer
will be able to produce an acid, greasy soap, or other

10

effects that could have a small effect on combat at the

GMs option. Health Product shelves have 3 PD, 3
ED, 2 BODY, and are not very sturdy.
40) Outdoor Gear: This area has all kinds of products
for the budding or skilled outdoorsman, including
tents, backpacks, bedrolls, hatchets, machetes, and
mosquito netting. Hatchets and machetes do 1d6
HKA, and mosquito netting is a 2d6 Area Effect
Entangle with 2 PD and 2 ED. The shelves for
outdoor gear are heavy and have 5 PD, 4 ED, 5
BODY. There is also a row of chainsaws. If the PCs
can somehow get gas into a chainsaw, the chainsaw
deals 2d6 HKA and up to 4d6 with strength.
41) Hardware and Power Tools: This area contains
large heavy pieces of hardware equipment, most of
which are stored in the Warehouse area. However,
most of the demonstration models are still on display.
Large workbenches, band saws, sledgehammers, and
other heavyweight do-it-yourself tools are located
here. Most of these heavyweight tools have between
5-7 PD, 6-8 ED, 4-7 BODY. There are several power
screwdrivers and power drills which do 1d6 HKA or
up to 2d6 with STR. This area also has four nail/bolt
guns. Nail/bolt guns fire nails and bolts which do
1d6 RKA. These are normally powered by
compressed air and take one full turn of combat to
charge up.
42) Home and Garden: This large roped-off area
contains large bags of fertilizer along with other
gardening tools, weed whackers, lawnmowers, and
plants. Most of these objects can be used as weapons.
A fertilizer bag has 1 PD, 1 ED, 7 BODY. Theyre
extremely heavy, too. Most gardening implements
have 1-2 PD, 1-2 ED, 1-2 BODY. Weed whakers and
other advanced gardening devices have 2-3 PD, 1-3
ED, 1-4 BODY. Lawnmowers come in two types:
pushable and drivable. There are ten pushable
lawnmowers, with 3 PD, 4 ED, 4 BODY, and four
drivable lawnmowers, with 4 PD, 5 ED, 6 BODY. A
small plant has 1 PD, 1 ED, 1 BODY, a medium plant
has 2 PD, 2 ED, 2 BODY, and a large plant has 3 PD,
3 ED, 3 BODY. Home and Garden is roped off by
large brass stands and rope. The brass stands have 5
PD, 5 ED, 7 BODY, but the rope only has 1 nPD, 1
nED, 2 BODY. This area may not normally be
entered without a salesperson.
Note: While in the real world, no one really has
to worry about this problem, in a superpowered
world, typically fire projection is one of the more
common abilities that might crop up. For this reason,
it is important to note that destroying a couple of
fertilizer bags amid a group of drivable, gasolinepowered lawnmowers that are meant to be taken on a
test drive around the building could be extremely
dangerous (due to the positioning of the airconditioning and ventilation units). This explosion
should be 12-15 normal dice, depending on how much
destruction there is and how many bags got opened or
destroyed before the fire projector unloaded on this
mess.

WAR OF WORLDCRAFT
43) Seating Area: This seating area for the eating
facilities is filled with cheap tables and chairs. The
tables have 3 PD, 2 ED, 2 BODY, and the chairs have
2 PD, 1 ED, 1 BODY. The Seating Area has a low
wooden rail around it that has 2 PD, 1 ED, 2 BODY.
Customer comfort is really not that important at
Maxi-Mart.
Maxi-Mart Offices
Areas along the inside wall of the Maxi-Mart offices
have windows to be able to see what is going on below.
The windows are mirrored and one-way. All windows
have 2 PD, 2 ED, 2 BODY. Unlike the savage conditions
on the selling floor below, the Maxi-Mart offices are plush,
professional, and comfortable.
44) Reception Area: This Reception Area is usually
filled with 1 to 3 normal job applicants, several
computer terminals where job applicants fill out their
applications online, and a secretarial desk. The
secretary behind the desk is Mimi Gundsacher, age
seventy-six, who also acts as the stores switchboard
operator. Shes been a Maxi-Mart employee for sixty
years and refuses to retire until the ripe old age of
eighty-two. Mimi is a friendly little fireplug of a
woman who never has a mean word for anyone who
respects the elderly. Other people, on the other hand,
may swiftly encounter Mimis wrath. The secretarys
desk has 4 PD, 3 ED, 3 BODY, and pictures of Mimis
children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and other
extended family. Computer terminals have 2 PD, 2
ED, 2 BODY. There is a bulletproof window through
which the payroll area can be seen and a small drop
slot. The window has 8 PD, 4 ED, 4 BODY.
Unfortunately, the walls around it are not nearly as
resilient (use standard Maxi-Mart walls).
45) Server Room/Payroll Area: This large area is
where Maxi-Mart keeps its computer servers and
handles its payroll duties. Paychecks are distributed
in Area 44. The area is very cold, which keeps all
payroll personnel in a constant state of
disgruntledness. There will be two robots in this area
as soon as Download can get them there so that he
can take over the security system remotely. Server
bays have 3 PD, 3 ED, 4 BODY. There is also a
medium-sized safe in this room that contains the
days cash receipts. This safe is difficult to open (-4 to
Lockpicking roll), and has 9 PD, 12 ED, 8 BODY. The
safe is bolted to the floor; however, it can be wrenched
free with a STR of 35. The servers are hooked into all
the computers in Maxi-Mart. This includes the
security cameras and the Managers Offices.
46) Security Room: The Security Area of the Maxi-Mart
contains a large wall of video cameras as well as the
same mirrored windows as the rest of the office rooms
that border on the inside. Head of Security Chaim
Goldman usually stays here with 1 to 3 security
personnel. Chaim is a mean, short balding man with

an intense hatred of shoplifters. Chaim is still

considered a Normal. From here, security can see any
location in the Maxi-Mart. This is where shoplifters
are detained until the police arrive. There are four
sets of handcuffs hanging from a pegboard a small
group of desks filled with paperwork, and some file
cabinets. The desks have 3 PD, 2 ED, 3 BODY.
47) Processing Office: This is where all of Maxi-Marts
paperwork is processed. Maxi-Mart makes a hardcopy
of everything it possibly can, creating bureaucracy
unparalleled in the modern world. The room is filled
with twelve desks, a chair for each desk, and row
after row of file cabinets. The cabinets are arranged
by date and the contents are moved daily from
cabinet to cabinet. There are 366 cabinets, but one
only gets used every four years on leap year. All the
paperwork is kept in its physical form for one year
and then discarded. The desks have 3 PD, 2 ED, 3
BODY. File cabinets have 2 PD, 2 ED, 3 BODY.
Chairs have 2 PD, 2 ED, 2 BODY.
48) Assistants Offices: These are the offices of the
assistant managers. Each assistant managers office
comes with a desk, chair, computer, and phone. There
is no carpeting and nothing else in these rooms.
Assistant manager offices are also used for
interviews. The PD, ED, and BODY values for desks
and chairs are the same as in the processing office.
49) Managers Offices: These are the same as the
offices of the assistant managers, only these have a
small throw rug on the floor inside.
50) General Manager Peter Broadhursts Office:
This plush, well-decorated office has a rich, thick
carpet on the floor. There is extra ambient lighting in
the ceiling, and there is a large, heavy wooden desk
on one side of the room. It is 4 PD, 3 ED, 5 BODY. A
high-end laptop sits on the desk, along with a
beautiful lamp that could only be an antique. The
lamp is 1 nPD, 1 nED, 1 BODY, but destroying it will
enrage the manager. Three plush chairs sit in front of
the desk, each covered in soft, supple leather. They
are 4 PD, 2 ED, 4 BODY, and even recline. The chair
behind the desk is a larger version of these chairs, at
5 PD, 2 ED, 4 BODY. The entire room is separately
ventilated from a personal thermostat on the desk.
Unfortunately, this is also wired through the
computer server. The entire office has real cherry
wood paneling. If this version of corporate
management is too despicable for your GMing style,
please feel free to replace it with an office similar to
the other offices above. This is also despicable, but in
a different way.

PART TWO: FINDING DOWNLOAD
We Interrupt This Program
Within two game hours of Jasons kidnapping, this
newscast airs. Do not read this section aloud if the PCs
are captured in Part One.
The smiling face of Andrea Kohn appears on the TV
screen. Hi, Im Andrea Kohn. Our top story: Superheroes
failed to prevent the kidnapping of Jason Watts Long by
the villain Download this afternoon at the local MaxiMart. No ransom demands have been issued at this time.
Mr. Long was working on several new security protocols
for Megaworld, the number one Massively Multiplayer
Online Roleplaying Game, at the time of his kidnapping.
In a possibly related story, many Megaworld players
have been found unconscious in front of their terminals.
No form of stimulation has been able to rouse them, and
physicians are stretched to the limit to determine the
cause of their affliction. At the present time, over two
thousand people have been affected, with reports of new
cases coming in by the minute. The mayor has declared a
state of emergency, and the crisis is slowly moving beyond
the citys bounds. At the present rate of increase, the
crisis will be statewide in twelve hours and nationwide in
several more. The FBI has issued a warning not to play
Megaworld until the crisis is over.
In other news, a rise in disputes over meal-portion
sizes divides the local board of health.
Ways of Finding Download
As people begin going comatose from playing
Megaworld in the wake of the kidnapping, the PCs will
see that they have a mystery on their hands. Clearly,
Jason Watts Longs abduction involved something that he
knew. There are no ransom demands and time appears to
be running out for the vegetative people on life support.
There are two ways to find Download, both of which may
seem equally attractive to the player characters. It will be
obvious to them that Download needs an incredible
amount of power and equipment to run his operation. The
PCs could investigate this and attempt to extrapolate his
location by researching suspicious purchases of high-end
computers, sudden draws of power off of the grid, and the
like. This will require the Skill Deduction and any
number of Knowledge Skills, Contacts, and Favors, as
well as Streetwise should the GM choose to have
Download acquire his resources through criminal contacts
(not an unlikely scenario).
Or the PCs could choose to enter the Megaworld
MMORPG directly and try to track Download from there.
Nothing as simple as triangulation will work in this
environment. The Internet is not a proximity-based entity
as far as Megaworld and Download are concerned, though
it still might be possible to do so if the PCs have access to
the worlds best equipment, analysis of all server response
times, complete access to Megaworlds customer service
list, and quite a lot of time. But by then the victims of
Downloads machinations will have slipped into

12

permanent comas! A brief investigation will reveal that,

so far, all of the afflicted people have last names that
start between A and C. (Downloads program runs things
alphabetically, so he hasnt gotten to later letters of the
alphabet yet.) If you have a hatred for a particular letter
of the alphabet, have Download start at that letter and
work your way forward. If a particular individual has
angered Download in the past, he might have even
written a special subroutine just to target that person
first.
Note that if the PCs are defeated by the robots in
Part One, they will wake up in Megaworld and have to
defeat Download inside the MMORPG.
Megaworld Offices
The PCs may also decide to investigate the
Megaworld offices. This will prove difficult; by the time
the PCs arrive in Dinwiddie, most of the Megaworld
employees will be on stretchers being checked out by
paramedics. Physically, they all seem fine, but like
Downloads other victims, theyve fallen into a comatose
state. The building is available for the PCs to search, but
the only place where they might be able to discover some
information is Jason Watts Longs cubicle where they can
gain access to his work computer (Computer
Programming, 14-, opposed roll).
Long was working on a new set of experimental
security protocols that would make Megaworld virtually
invulnerable to hacking. These new protocols are based on
the frequencies of human brainwaves. It turns out that
every person on Earth has a subtly different brainwave
frequency, giving them a signature as unique as a
fingerprint or retinal pattern, with the crucial distinction
that they can be identified through the Internet. Longs
new software cycles through these patterns randomly
until it identifies a particular individual, allowing them to
access their individual account. With these protocols in
place and Megaworld unable to be hacked, Downloads
various schemes would fall apart.
Allow PCs with the appropriate skills a Deduction
roll to realize that cycling brainwave frequencies would
probably create severe interference with whatever
machines Download is using to trap people in the
MMORPG world. Reward PCs who figure this out on their
own with an extra Experience Point at the end of the
adventure.

WAR OF WORLDCRAFT
METHOD A: INTO THE VR WORLD
As mentioned above, the PCs have two methods of
finding Download and rescuing Jason Watts Long: the
dirty, streetwise way or going into the MMORPG. It is
also possible that they might split into two teams and use
both methods at once. If this happens, see the section
below on simultaneous combat for Download. In order to
get into the VR world, the heroes must examine
Downloads equipment, find a way to get into the
MMORPG, get the right mission, and defeat Download.
Alternatively, the heroes can examine Downloads
equipment, figure out how it was made and who sold him
the parts, locate the shipping manifests, and track
Download to his real-world location.
A note on timing: It is important to press upon the
player characters that if they choose both methods, they
need to plan ahead. A non-simultaneous attack in a splitgroup situation is meant to backfire horribly, and should.
Part of the responsibility for this comes from the GM. It is
the GMs responsibility in an introductory scenario like
this one to ask questions like Are you sure? and Have
you done everything you want to do? A more dramatic
GM may choose to have things run at exactly the same
rate of speed, but this should really only be done if the
PCs are novices or working on a brilliant timetable.
Advanced Players: It is recommended for advanced
players that you not ask the questions listed above, as it
may lead to solving the scenario too easily. Some PCs may
try to write an algorithm that allows them to effectively
solve the scenario from their living room. Dont allow this.
Superheroes do not sit in their homes, eat ice cream, and
fight the bad guys from a lounge chair! (Gamers do, but
thats an entirely different matter.) If Download detects
an intrusion of this nature, he will contact the heroes and
warn them that unless they cease and desist in their
electronic intrusion, he will begin deleting hostages. This
is a serious threat and it will be carried out.
Examining Downloads Equipment
If the PCs have destroyed or captured some of
Downloads robots, they may wish to examine the robots
and see how they work. A Computer Programming roll at
-4 and an Inventor roll at -3 are necessary to understand
how the robots function. Electronics and SS: Robotics are
considered Complementary.
The robots transform a persons mind into electrical
impulses and then upload it into Megaworld where
Download is waiting for them. (Having the victims body
is nice for the supervillain, but he really doesnt need it.)
Without a mind, over the course of several days, the body
deteriorates and slips irretrievably into a coma. This gives
Download thousands, possibly millions, of hostages.
Encourage the PCs to roleplay their way through this
process. The robots are extremely complex technological
entities. If the PCs can reassemble an intact mind
transferrance device, they can use the beam on
themselves, enter the MMORPG, find out where
Download is, and attack him in the place where he thinks
he is safest.
Alternatively, the PCs can examine the components
of the robots and try to figure out where Download might

be in the real world. This requires a Streetwise roll at -4

and a Systems Operation roll at -3 to determine what
parts might be used.
If the PCs opt to upload themselves into the
MMORPG, Download needs to make a Perception roll at 8 since hes kidnapping people all over the city. Whether
Download sends constructs and robots after the PCs
depends on the GM. If he makes the roll, Download will
be prepared. Move to the Arrival section.
If the PCs opt to investigate the parts and locate
Downloads servers in the real world, that information is
available. Move to The Seamy Side of Silicon Valley
section.
Arrival
Once the PCs arrive in the MMORPG world, they will
awaken in an alleyway in Super City with a few blankets
over them and a dog barking nearby. There is also a trash
can in the alleyway but very little else. The alley is far
cleaner than any real-world equivalent alleyway. The dog
looks suspiciously like a CGI version of a dog, and the
PCs, after a few moments of observing each other, all look
like themselves. Regardless of whether or not the PCs left
the real world in their costumes, they are in their
costumes now.
Plot Option: Instead of the same abilities that the
PCs have in the real world, they might end up in the
virtual body of a different hero.
The PCs can try to talk to the CGI dog, but all it will
do is bark at them. If the PCs look around the alley, they
can find a little food for the dog in the trash can, which
the dog will eat. The CGI dog will then follow the PCs
around the MMORPG. Characters who spend time saving
the dog may receive a special bonus powerup from the
hero mission squad (read that section carefully).
Theres a lot to do in the MMORPG world and the
PCs can fight as much imaginary crime as they want, but
there are thousands of real people trapped in here.
Currently, however, most of these superheroes are busy
fighting their computer-generated nemeses and keeping
gang violence to a minimum. These are people who are
desperately afraid that if they die, they may not respawn
return to life in the game and so in the real world and
are correspondingly extremely frightened.
This is the hardest part of the adventure to run
because, unless the PCs are familiar with the
environment of Megaworld themselves, they will be
wandering around blindly for a while. Other heroes will
call on them for aid, and it is likely they wont recognize a
single one of them or what any of their powers are.
What Super City Looks Like:
Super City is only one city in Megaworld, which is
comprised of many. Giving servers names was less
preferable to the Megaworld designers to actually
creating a whole globe, thus creating cities that are more
English for English people, more Russian for Russian
People, and so on. Super City is an excessively four-color
model of the PCs campaign city. It has taller buildings,
bigger shopping centers, more and bigger everything.
Everything is designed to be a dramatically appropriate
venue for superheroes and supervillains beating each

13

MICHAEL SATRAN
other up. Characters may spend experience points to
purchase larger apartments, heroic mansions, and other
in-game goodies. The most powerful characters often have
their own buildings, public hero headquarters, or other
associated heroes that help them fight crime.
Sidekicks do exist, but there are encounters where, if
your sidekick is defeated, a villain may capture him. If
this happens, a sidekick may have to be rescued by a hero
or team of heroes based on which NPC villain wound up
with your sidekick. Most players are very good natured
about sidekick rescues.
The heroes do not perceive Megaworld as if
everything has a colored life point bar over it. Other
heroes dont either. It is actually possible to have a
character knocked unconscious in Megaworld for several
days. (Record time: four and a half weeks.) However, up
until now, it has not actually been possible to die.
Rescuing People and Getting Help
While the PCs are being followed by the dog,
remember that this is an MMORPG and not the real
world. Run encounters for them for as long as the players
would like; just remember that they are on a time limit
and thousands of real-world people could die.
The dog follows the PCs wherever they go in the
MMORPG until the players get the idea that the dog is
important. Allow the PCs to have one or two encounters
in the MMORPG world a burning building with
innocents to rescue, panicking superheroes realizing
theyre trapped in the game, and so on.
This can be played either seriously or for laughs. A lot
of cross-gender roleplaying goes on in MMORPGs. Some
people would rather stare at the opposite sex for hours
while beating people up, and now theyre trapped in the
body of the heroine they roleplay while in reality being a
kind of chunky, bearded nerd. Life is full of little
surprises. Or not so little, if the hero agrees to sign
autographs for said nerd once their time in the MMORPG
is over.

14

Optional Encounters
There are a number of optional encounters that the
GM can include if the adventure needs to be longer. These
are listed here.
Dognapping: A group of desperate heroes in need of
a powerup because their enemies are overwhelming them
tries to kidnap the dog following the PCs and rescue it
by turning the dog in at mission headquarters for a
powerup. This can be a straight fight or a fight where the
characters try and convince the desperate game players
that they really are real-world superheroes here to save
them from Download. This is also a good way to help the
heroes if they dont know that rescuing the dog gives a
powerup. It might also make them fight too hard, though,
or accidentally kill innocent people.
Help Us!: Some of the mightiest heroes in Megaworld
are being attacked by threats that hack right through
their defenses. Downloads Bytes are invincible to almost
everything except the player characters because
Download has set them on god mode. These heroes are
real people who might actually be killed by such deadly
programs. Can the heroes save them? (This option is
recommended.)
Fear the Train!: Someone screws up while playing
Megaworld and is pursued by an entire army of
supervillains, minion creatures, demons, and hot dog
vendors until he gets out of the zone hes in! The PCs are
caught in the way! Whats a poor hero to do?
Internet Romance: One of the heroes gets a
romance subplot with another player while theyre in
Megaworld. This could go any number of ways. The
romancer could be appealing or unappealing to the PC, or,
in an unusual twist, a villain who plays a superhero on
Megaworld in their spare time. (See the Champion below.)
Moral Dilemma: A hero asks the PCs for help. His
wife is pregnant, and hes trapped in his hero persona.
Can the PCs contact the outside and get help for his wife.
Shes due any day. Or maybe a superheroine is pregnant,
but trapped in outside her body.

WAR OF WORLDCRAFT
Getting the Mission, Part One: The Tutorial Area
The PCs first need to learn a little bit about
Megaworld. Theyve spawned in the area for novices and
are surrounded by several other costumed heroes who all
look curiously CGI-like. There are several people they can
meet in the novice area of the city and practice using their
powers in CGI bodies. There are several NPC encounters
here that the PCs can have in the tutorial area. Modify
the stats of the Bytes as necessary to run the characters
in the MMORPG.
The Champion: The Champion is an old player with a
new character. The characters other MMORPG
character is Dr. Ladybug, a female armored brick.
The Champion is a male energy projector. The
Champion is kind and helpful, and will openly
approach characters to give them a hand with some of
the initial possible encounters if they need it. He will
ask them to join his superhero team that hes
forming. If asked where the Justice Citadel is, he
readily answers. Hes a really nice guy. He is dressed
in a brilliant suit of blue and silver, and his arms are
covered with stylized metal bands that ripple with
power when he moves.
Plot Option: The Champions real identity is
Laserwhip, a gorgeous supervillainess who loves the
idea that when she goes home from her bank
robberies, crimes, and mercenary jobs, she becomes a
superhero. What a rude surprise awaits the hero who
meets Laserwhip, especially if he plays the
MMORPG, only to have a conversation like I cant
believe youre the Champion!
Doc Defender: Doc Defender is an old hand at the
MMORPG and will swiftly fly in to help the player
characters out. He starts by telling them that if
theyre trying to be real superheroes that are local to
the campaign city, the admins will nuke their
characters and give them a warning. When he
realizes the heroes are actually real, he will begin
giving them help of a different sort. He lets them
know where the key place to get missions is. When he
finds out that they got in here by use of Downloads
equipment, he will suggest going to the Justice
Citadel to register with the Centurion League. He
will tell the player characters to bring the dog, as the
dog is the pet of the butler of the Centurion League.
He gives them directions to the Justice Citadel,
floating high above the city. All they have to do is find
the nearest transporter booth.

Bleepkicker: Bleepkicker is in the new character area for

the twenty-sixth time in twenty-six days. Bleepkicker
has received nineteen warnings for offensive
character names that are inappropriate and seven
names that werent very creative but qualified as
potential copyright infringement. Bleepkicker is
dressed in a pair of massive gold gauntlets, a white
costume with a brilliant purple cape, and impressivelooking black boots. He has force projection and
telekinetic powers. He will approach the PCs in a
frustrated manner and, seeing that they may soon get
a warning, too, ask to join forces. If the PCs help
Bleepkicker think of a name, give the group an extra
Experience Point when the adventure is over. It is
imperative that at least the first few names the PCs
choose for Bleepkicker be taken already, no matter
how unlikely it seems.
Disturbo: Disturbo is a creator of illusions; however, the
illusions he creates come from an unpleasant, semiillegal patch involving tentacled monsters and other
creatures of horror. Disturbo has been looking to join
a hero team for years, but no one will take him since
two people damaged their keyboards (from throwing
up) during a mission with him. He wears a
nauseating purple and mauve costume with
iridescent teal highlights. If you want Disturbos
player to be something other than a creepy loser,
check the plot options below.
Plot Option: Disturbos player has tapped into
the power of the Bjorg Bjornsen Meat-Reducing Grills
and is channeling monsters from beyond.
Plot Option: Disturbo is actually one of these
monsters himself and is trying to lure other
Megaworld players into his tentacled alien monster
clutches.
The Peerless Perceptoid: The Peerless Perceptoid can
see all kinds of things and see halfway across Super
City! Unfortunately, the Peerless Perceptoid does
little more damage than a thrown rock. A lot of
characters dont want to work with the Perceptoid,
feeling that hes an XP eater or a sponge. He wears a
large pair of goggles and a business suit with a trench
coat and hat. If the PCs take the Perceptoid to the
Champion or Doc Defender, they will take him in and
the Perceptoid will be very grateful.

King Ankh: King Ankh is a mighty Egyptian-style

superhero with a massive staff shaped like an ankh.
He goes bare-chested and wears the traditional
Egyptian skirt and sandals. He fawns all over the
female members of the team and asks them to join a
superhero team called Egyptian Defenders. Theres
always room for more concubines! Female PCs who
try to beat up King Ankh should find it not too tough
but very satisfying.

Getting to the Justice Citadel
Its not hard to find a transporter booth to the Justice
Citadel. Once the PCs get there, there are a number of
heroes roaming about the Citadel, performing tasks and
getting missions. There are several missions that are
always on the board, which looks like a highly stylized
computer screen.
Standing underneath the computer screen is Unistar,
Super Citys most powerful hero. Unistar is powerfully
built, with blond hair and blue eyes, and has a bright gold
costume with a brilliant blue star on his chest. Unistar
makes pithy soliloquies about justice that are long and
awfully difficult to listen to if the heroes talk to him, but
Unistar is a little more aware than most of the other
heroes on the grid and well aware that all is not right in
Super City. He will tell the heroes that they look new, and
if theyd like any help, they can report to the butler,
Anselm. Hell be happy to help them get settled after they
bring back the dog.
Anselm is a man in his mid-sixties with shock-white
hair and a rail-thin build. The dog will run to Anselm and
slobber excitedly, drooling all over his shoes. At this point,
Unistar will move over to the PCs and speak to them.
I understand that youre different from the others
that are here. Weve detected a power anomaly coming
from the West Edge. Would you like to investigate it?
If the PCs refuse to investigate the anomaly, Unistar
slowly begins to shimmer and wink out, fading into an
insubstantial haze. The Justice Citadel begins falling into
chaos and confusion. A Systems Operation roll will enable
the PCs to determine the location of West Edge and travel
there. Once the PCs arrive in West Edge, depending upon
how much time the GM wants to make this take, move to
the Finding the Mission Entry Point section.
Important information about West Edge if the PCs
ask the right questions:

West Edge is where a massive battle against

some form of alien entity took place about a year
and a half ago in the online game. Through clever
use of powers and abilities, the characters
managed to trap it under a large vacant lot.

The address of the vacant lot is 113 Pine Tree

Way.
Feel free to introduce any other characters from the
MMORPG you want to introduce at this point. If any of
the PCs have DNPCs who play Megaworld, their
characters should be here with a funny glazed look in
their eyes. Download has captured the important people
in their lives, and they didnt even leave their bedrooms!

16

Finding the Mission Entry Point

When the characters get to West Edge, theyll have to
search around for the exact location of the entry point.
Unfortunately, Download has concealed the entry point by
placing a warehouse where one doesnt exist on the grid
map. Hes also removed the sign outside the vacant lot, so
the heroes may have to do a little looking around. Because
this is a mission entry point, the characters have no
choice. They must go in through the front door. Once they
do this, go to Part Three, to the Man of Two Worlds
section.
Be sure to introduce at least one plot complication in
this section to keep it interesting.

WAR OF WORLDCRAFT
METHOD B: THE SEAMY SIDE OF
SILICON VALLEY
Tracking the Parts
Examining the parts from Downloads robots using
the proper Computer Programming and Inventor skill
rolls will yield the serial numbers and the name of each
parts distributor (rolls must be made at a -2). Once the
PCs have this set of numbers, they can check credit card
records and shipping companies to determine where the
parts were offloaded. A quick investigation of the
offloaded components reveals that the parts were stolen
en route to a local We Cel Computers and that the order
number had been reimbursed by the shippers insurance
company. The insurance company has no incriminating
evidence, and the stolen parts have vanished without a
trace. The heroes can, at this point, enter the MMORPG
or try to find out what happened to the stolen shipment.
Tracking the Suppliers
What happened to the shipment is relatively simple.
Download altered the shipping manifests and had the
thieves who stole the computer parts he needed deliver
them to a sleazy computer parts smuggling ring.
However, finding this out might take a little bit more
work than it seems. For one thing, the smuggling ring is
connected with local organized crime. For another,
organized crime has no wish to tangle with the heroes and
will tip off Download to the fact that the heroes are
poking around (see the Defensive Measures Optional
Battle). Download will be warned of the PCs presence
regardless in the MMORPG world, but, hey, alls fair in
love and war, right?
Finding Downloads Parts Suppliers and Contacts
The shipping manifest was signed by a man named
Damien Sigfried who can easily be found at the shipping
warehouse. His phone number is on the manifests.
Damien Sigfried: Damien is a nerdy-looking man in a
uniform that makes him look something like a gas station
attendant. He has a long narrow face, big bulging glasses,
and slick black hair that make him look like a 50s
greaser gone strange. Damien will be overjoyed to see the
heroes; after all, it isnt as if he gets to see superheroes
every day. Damien will tell the heroes that he handles
shipments for We Cel Computers all the time. If the
heroes ask to check his records, they can easily determine
that the contents of the manifests have been tampered
with (Computer Programming roll), as there were fewer
parts in the manifest than were actually shipped out.
Thus, after the truck was robbed and everything arrived
at We Cel Computers, it seemed like nothing was missing.
Damien is a useful contact who could be helpful when
other types of parts are shipped through a distribution
warehouse.
A successful Streetwise roll will reveal this to be the
M.O. of Sully Chesterfield, a local mobster affiliated with
the Mafia and the Orlante crime family in specific.

Interviewing the Contacts

Finding Sully may be difficult, but tracking down
several of his underlings is not. A list of contacts is below
with the Streetwise roll penalties needed to track them
down. This should be roleplayed. Just making a roll
should not be sufficient.
Rocco Galonti (0): Rocco Galonti is a large, heavyset deli
owner. He is cheerful and brusque but will offer the
heroes sandwiches. The deli is clean and well kept
but doesnt have anything illegal going on in it. Rocco
does respond well to persuasion but not to
intimidation or threats. Any intimidation or
threatening actions will cause Rocco to call the police.
However, if the PCs can convince Rocco that
Download has used the Mafia and that they may get
into trouble, Rocco will call Tommy Three Shoes and
set up a meeting.
Tommy Three Shoes Finotti (-2): Tommy actually
went on the job that Download hired Sullys people
for, but he will not tell the PCs this. He will tell the
PCs, instead, that he doesnt know anything.
Persuasion is not very useful on Tommy, but more
forceful tactics might. (Interrogation, highly
threatening displays of power, and PRE attacks)
Tommy can be found in a middle-class apartment in
the campaign city, but when Download is brought up,
he will become very scared. He doesnt want to deal
with any of that supervillain crap and his fear can
be used against him. Tommy doesnt know what
happened to the computer parts. They just dropped
them off at the specified drop point. There were no
human beings there, just a small group of robots that
put everything into a delivery van. (Give the PCs an
INT roll to recognize the Delivery Vanbot if they ask
for a description.) Tommy loves the old-school mafia
and even wears two-tone shoes.
Tommys nickname comes from the fact that he is
so cheap that he only puts one of his victims feet into
the cement before tossing them into the river. (He can
get three sinkings per two 50-pound bags that way.)
Naturally, he wont want the PCs to know this and
will insist that it comes from one of them long,
boring stories that aint as funny as youd think.
Ringo The Ham Ochese (-3): Ringo, also known
colloquially to his fellow thugs as Ham and Cheese,
is something of a schmoozer. He likes to talk about
his jobs and is easy to persuade. If the players take a
hard line with Ringo, he will shut up. He likes to play
the tough guy and is fully aware that his reputation
relies on this image. He can usually be found at a
local watering hole, The Briny Whiner. The bar is
filled with other seedy toughs, and Ringo is a little
out of place in a nice suit. But thats just how Ringo
likes it. Playing to Ringos desire to be the center of
attention will get them the location of the warehouse,
but it wont clear out the people who are currently in
the warehouse making an arms deal. The chance to
destroy evidence is high (see Armed and
Dangerous).

17

MICHAEL SATRAN
Peter Eyeball Pisoni (-5): Peter is the groups lookout
and has an additional +2 to all Perception rolls. If the
PCs try to find Peter, they can easily find him in his
day job as a shoe salesman. Peter has the clout to
keep the contractors out of the warehouse and move
the smuggling operation so that the PCs dont run
into a firefight, possibly destroying all the evidence.
The PCs, however, have to impress upon him the
seriousness of whats going on first. He is a slender
man with big wide eyes who usually wears the
cheapest suits he can get his hands on.
Sully The Chest Chesterfield (-8): If the PCs actually
find Sully at his mansion outside of town, Sully will
be entirely cooperative. However, in the long term,
this will not go well for the PCs. Sully is an extremely
vengeful gangster and will ask his boss, a consigliore
in the Orlante crime family, to put out a contract on
the PCs. Its not always a good idea to go to the
highest guy in the food chain. Sully is a big, heavy
man who wears Hawaiian shirts a couple sizes too
small and baggy jeans. He is usually found in a
lounge chair near his swimming pool, rubbing his
chin over his five oclock shadow.
Finding the Warehouse
Once the warehouse is located, the PCs will have to
get inside to gain access to its offices, then they can read
the shipping manifests, find out where things went, and
any other clues. The clues the PCs can find in the
warehouse are listed below.
Searching the Computer: The computer contains
evidence that the shipping manifest was received under a
different manifest number. This manifest has altered data
that suggests that records of the parts that were
overlooked in the initial shipment have been moved onto a
different manifest. This different manifest is now listed as
lost in transit. Not only did Sully Chesterfield steal the
computer parts, but then he had the nerve to commit
insurance fraud with the stolen merchandise! Discovering
this requires a Computer Programming roll at -2 (PS:
Accountant can be considered Complementary). This
provides the PCs with the address of the delivery point
which is at 113 Pine Tree Way. (Yes, the address is the
same in both the campaign city and the MMORPG.
Download needed to do this to prevent even more lag time
between his physical and his computerized selves than he
already has.)
Searching the Warehouse: The warehouse keeps
duplicate paper records for up to six months. Diligent
searching of the paper records reveals the different
manifest number located in the computer records and the
address of delivery, 113 Pine Tree Way. This requires a
point of Luck, a Perception roll at -5, or four hours of
searching, barring a speed reader to reduce the time.

18

Destroying Evidence: If the PCs have a battle here,

it is likely that some or all of the evidence will be
destroyed in the confrontation. There are some simple
ways of determining how much evidence is removed. For
every 2 misses that use damage-dealing powers, add -1 to
all rolls needed to locate evidence. If 10 misses occur that
use damage-dealing powers, assume that the physical
evidence or the computer evidence is destroyed. If 20
misses occur that use damage-dealing powers, there
probably isnt enough left of the warehouse to sweep up
with a whisk broom. The PCs may have to enter the
MMORPG to find Download after all.
Optional Battles
1) Armed and Dangerous: A group of criminals armed
with military weapons are smuggling them in the
warehouse when the PCs arrive. The PCs must
disable the arms smugglers without letting them
destroy evidence, and LAW rockets and the like
destroy a lot of evidence.
2) Defensive Measures: The PCs encounter a group of
Downloads robots and Bytes sent to the warehouse to
cover his tracks (recommend using one robot or Byte
per PC). Experienced GMs might wish to combine
Battles 1 and 2, giving the PCs so-called innocents to
save who are really hardened criminals with military
hardware.
3) Mysterious Threat: The PCs have a battle with a
group of hired supervillains who either hunt them or
have designs on the PCs in some manner. (This
encounter is unrelated and meant to be used in a
longer-term game.)
4) Can I Come, Too?: A wannabe superhero shows up
and starts following the group around, clumsily
alerting villains to the heroes presence but
occasionally saying something helpful.
Finding the Supply Warehouse
Once the PCs have dealt with the warehouse, finding
113 Pine Tree Way in the real world is fairly easy.
Numerous global positioning systems, mapping programs,
and even the phone book can direct them to this location.
After a fight where all the evidence can be destroyed, the
PCs deserve a break!

WAR OF WORLDCRAFT
PART THREE: ASSEMBLY LANGUAGE
Downloads Base (Real)
Downloads base is a large abandoned department
store supply warehouse in one of the citys tenement
areas. Uninhabited for over fifty years, it was easy to
hollow out the framework and build massive mind prison
towers to hold up the ceiling. Outside the building is a
dilapidated parking lot that is half-paved and filled with
shattered gravel. The loading bays have been mortared
over with concrete, and the windows have been boarded
up. The outer walls have 6 PD, 10 ED, 5 BODY, and are
made of reinforced concrete. The ceiling has 5 PD, 9 ED, 2
BODY. The boarded-up windows have 2 PD, 1 ED, 2
BODY. A Perception roll at -1 will indicate that someone
or something is moving around inside. A Perception roll at
-2 (or an unpenalized Security Systems roll) will point out
the out-of-place high-tech cameras outside a rundown
warehouse. Downloads base has cameras that enable him
to see what is going on outside unless the heroes have
special abilities that foil his camera systems. Review the
base sheet carefully before running the adventure. It is
difficult to catch Download off guard.
Outside the base is the parked Delivery Vanbot, if the
PCs have not already destroyed it. Start combat
immediately; the Vanbot already recognizes the PCs as
hostile.

Positions on the map that are circled indicate the

starting positions of enemies when the PCs arrive. Feel
free to move them thereafter. If the PCs somehow can get
into the warehouse undetected, these are their starting
locations. Download is marked with a D, and capital Bs
represent robots. Lowercase Bs represent digital
constructs or Bytes. The Gs are ceiling-mounted gun
emplacements mounted above the four main server bays.
Gun emplacements do not move but have a 360 degree arc
of fire below. The gun mounts are on retractable cables, so
characters who think they have cover behind certain
portions of the server bays are in for a rude surprise.
Clever characters may be able to destroy the gun
emplacement by destroying the much less tough ceiling
above it.
For Advanced Players: If you feel this scenario is too
weak for your advanced players, add one robot or two
Bytes. Alternatively, feel free to include additional
supervillains who Download has hired to deter or delay
the players.
The Virtual Base and the Real Base have the exact
same layout so that Download does not experience
resource conflicts from his hardware. However, see the
Man of Two Worlds section below for what happens to
the man/machine interface if Download is confronted
inside and outside the MMORPG simultaneously.

DOWNLOADS BASE (REAL)
1)

Concrete Walk and Doorway: This concrete

walkway has no stairs but is merely a brief section of
pavement that irregularly leads to the doorway. The
door has 6 PD, 10 ED, 3 BODY, and isnt too hard for
a hero to blast down. The door has an alarm on it that
requires a Security Systems roll at -5 to bypass.
Failing this roll alerts Download to the presence of
the PCs.

2)

Small Office Suite: This is a minor office suite that

is currently devoid of equipment. It is nothing but an
empty room with a battered old desk (2 nPD, 1 nED,
2 BODY), and chair (1 PD, 0 ED, 1 BODY).

3)

Small Secretarys Office: This is a small secretarial

office with another battered desk and chair. There is
a security camera in the ceiling of this room.

4)

Main Office: This is a large office with a few shelves

of old books and some dusty file cabinets filled with
paperwork. All of it is very old.
Plot Option: Some of the paperwork could lead
to the revelation that fraudulent actions took place
within the past at Maxi-Mart or some other
corporation that are still prosecutable.
Plot Option: Under the floorboards is a hidden
safe that contains old collectible coins (with possible
links to the occult), old-style paper money (that
belongs to a very much alive and very angry
gangster), or the journal of a once-respected
superhero of a previous age.

5)

Server Towers: These large cubical server towers

rise eight meters into the air, with the gun mounts
six meters above that. Each Server Tower has 15 PD,
15 ED, 9 BODY. They are extremely resilient and can
withstand at least 6 BODY before beginning to short
out.

20

6)

Platform: This is a raised platform where Download

maintains his computer operation. He is consistently
linked to his MMORPG self through the interface
table that he is sitting at. At each corner of this
platform is a robot which will defend Download and
attack aggressive PCs. The platform is 10 PD, 8 ED, 6
BODY. Note that destroying the platform means that
the PCs will need to find a way to keep the mindless
human bodies alive for weeks while they repair it.
The interface table is 8 PD, 8 ED, 4 BODY, but
doesnt have nearly as much mass. Download begins
combat at the interface table. Jason Watts Long is
trapped under the platform in a steel coffin with 8
PD, 8 ED, 8 BODY. His mind is one of the many in
Area 7.

7)

Mind Prisons: In the real world, these look like

floor-to-ceiling steel support towers with several bars
of flashing lights and security codelocks on them.
Security codelocks have a -6 penalty to disable them
and remove storage units of minds. The Mind Prisons
support the ceiling and each has 200,000 imprisoned
users. Each Mind Prison has 15 PD, 15 ED, 15
BODY. Destroying a Mind Prison means the people
inside die. Be very careful. At the base of each Mind
Prison is a robot-construction housing. Download
does most of his robot construction offsite and has the
capacity to move most of the minds to a larger secret
facility, the location of which is up to the GM to
determine.

8)

Rubber Mat: This rubber mat is here to prevent

shortouts. It is three inches thick, and the servers
and platform are protected while they rest on it. It
has 3 PD, 8 ED, 5 BODY, but it requires a truly
massive amount of damage to destroy the whole mat.
It also smells bad if vaporized and may cause
computers to malfunction if melted rubber gets into
important parts.

WAR OF WORLDCRAFT
DOWNLOADS BASE (VIRTUAL)
In the virtual world, the heroes have no choice but to
open the mission entry point door in the front and go in.
By this point, Download will probably know the heroes
are coming through this door and will have moved his
forces to intercept. The advantage of this situation is that
the bad guys are all close together and can quickly
coordinate on a few key targets. The disadvantage is that
Download knows the heroes are coming and is completely
prepared for them.
The PD, ED, and BODY of the objects in the Virtual
MMORPG world are the same as those in the real world
except otherwise noted.
For Advanced Players: Add two Bits and two Bytes
to this scenario. If Download has been busy putting people
into robot bodies, use the Real World section above.
1)

2)

Parking Lot and Entry Point: In the MMORPG

world, the building is concealed behind a false faade
that makes it appear to be a perfectly ordinary
junkyard surrounded by a fence. A Perception Roll at
-6 is needed to see through it; however, every clue
they have garnered in the MMORPG world gives
them a +1 bonus to this roll. The entry point itself
has a security lock that requires a Security Systems
Roll at -2. The door has 9 PD, 13 ED, 4 BODY; it is
much tougher than the real-world one.
Empty Room: This empty room is devoid of
ornamentation. It is merely an architectural copy of
Downloads base in the real world so that his complex
brain-stealing software doesnt crash and kill his
hostages.

3)

Empty Room: See Area 2.

4)

Empty Room: See Area 2.

5)

Server Bays: In the MMORPG world, these look like

large massive black cubes, crackling with energy.
Above them, gun ports on extendable cables shift and
move like mechanical snakes (see the general
description). Server Bays in the MMORPG world
have 10 PD, 10 ED, 15 BODY, which represents
Downloads firewall-building skills.

6)

Platform: This area is a mirror of Downloads

platform in the real world. Download stands behind
the platform here and manipulates the MMORPG.
The robots will attack whomever Download
commands them to. The Platform in the MMORPG
world has 12 PD, 10 ED, 15 BODY.

7)

Mind Prisons: In the MMORPG world, these Mind

Prisons are much less well defended, having only 8
PD, 8 ED, 7 BODY. They look like towering
collections of screaming, desperate human faces
behind a glassy, translucent reddish-purple shield,
begging for their families, friends, and usernames.
They are all terrified. Play this up if any of the PCs
strike one or get knocked back into one.

8)

The

cubes reflects the shadows of the combatants and
everyone standing on it. It has 6 PD, 6 ED, 8 BODY.

21

MICHAEL SATRAN
THE GRAND FINALE
Taking Hostages
If Download is losing but somehow gets a breather,
he will threaten to destroy one of the massive pylons
containing the minds of his hostages. If the PCs cannot
stop this, Download will kill a very large number of
people. Allow the PCs to be heroic if possible. If the PCs
are unwilling to call his bluff and Download escapes,
remind them that 200,000 or so people lived because they
chose to wait and take another shot at the villain later.
If the PCs continue their assault, Download will shoot
at the pylons. If any of the storage pylons have already
been damaged in the combat, Download will shoot at the
one that looks the most vulnerable. Apply Downloads
attack against the pylon normally. Remember that if the
object is destroyed in reality, it is ALSO destroyed in the
MMORPG. The reverse is not true. The pylon will
respawn in twenty minutes if destroyed in the MMORPG.
Unfortunately, the people will not.
If the PCs completely defeat Download and knock
him unconscious, Download explodes in a spectacular hiss
of electricity, metal, sparks, and smoke! (See the section
on robots. Maybe he was just a robot the whole time or
maybe he was really an evil genius in a robot suit. Only
the GM knows for sure!)
Freeing the Prisoners
There are two ways to free the prisoners from the
data prisons. The first is by constructing a computer
program to return all of the minds to their original bodies.
The base time for designing such a program is one week
and carries with it a penalty of -4. In the meantime,
bodies on life support will need to be cared for, so if the
PCs didnt take care of this beforehand, they may not
wake up at all if the bodies have been moved far enough
from their computer terminals when their minds are
finally freed and try to find their way home. The PCs will
need to find a way to communicate with the outside world
if trapped in the MMORPG world. Methods could range
from contacting Megaworld executives to contacting their
DNPCs who play Megaworld under other names and
giving them the information that they need to free their
characters from the MMORPG world.
The second is by cycling their own brainwave
frequencies to produce a disruptive harmonic effect. This
requires a Computer Programming roll at -5 and a
scientist or computer programmer to acquire the
appropriate data and equipment. Bombarding the prison
towers with the brainwave frequencies will eject all
unwanted protocols to their points of origin (send the
minds back to their respective bodies), much like Jason
Watts Longs security program was meant to.
If the PCs are currently outside the MMORPG, they
can also try to use Downloads equipment to reverse the
process. This is slower, but also doable; it just requires
the PCs to be busy for a few weeks while they send the
people back one at a time.
Allow the PCs to be creative here.

22

Man of Two Worlds

If the PCs fight Download in the MMORPG world and
the real world at the same time, Download cannot process
all the data he is receiving and slows down (lags out). His
OCV and DCV drop by 3, as do all of his Perception rolls.
He can no longer use his Defense Maneuver IV. If the PCs
are weaker than usual or theyre having a really rough
time, subtract 1 point of SPD from the villain as well.
Assess additional penalties at the GMs discretion.
Everything on Downloads side in both the MMORPG
world and the real world receives these penalties. This is
a very complicated option and is usually recommended for
experienced players only. It requires laying out two
separate maps or color coding all the enemies on the same
map. If the PCs start moving large pieces of furniture
around in the real world, add an additional
-1 DCV to Download as he suffers additional pattern
recognition issues.
After the Patch
If Download escapes, the PCs have made a powerful
enemy who will stop at nothing to see them ruined. His
scheme in shambles, Download will flee to another secret
server group and begin plotting the doom of the player
characters.
If Download doesnt escape, there are even more
problems. The PCs have just captured a man with
conceivably the greatest ability to escape in all of history.
Download is also very popular with the supervillain
community, and if the heroes capture him, a means of
escape is denied to these villains. It could make several of
them angry.
The PCs are heroes to the MMORPG world and may
face the difficulty of having their names owned by the
publishers of Megaworld, resulting in lawsuits to retain
their good names while their fanboys trash them in the
name of phat lewt and kewl stuff.
If the entity trapped under Downloads base escapes
into Megaworld (About Megaworld, the MMORPG), this
will be a dire consequence, as the entity is no longer
trapped in its delete protocol and poses a very real threat
to the real world now that Download has tampered with
the system. (This is a fine opportunity to introduce a new
villain if your game doesnt have a powerful robot entity
or to introduce Mechanon (from the Champions Universe)
if you want to use him and change his origin.
But not to worry: your PCs are now simultaneously
heroes in both the real and virtual worlds, with all the
prestige and complications that implies. Benefactors and
malefactors will arise. Justice will cry out in her loud,
clear voice. Evil will have to be defeated. Its all in a days
work for the life of a superhero and the lives of your
superheroes are just beginning!

three separate packages, each containing a new advanced
mouse for computers. Can the heroes get all three
packages and stop the virus from spreading?
Four Corners: Download creates a computerized version
of online pool. Is the game rigged, or is he just collecting
bets on the games? For additional evil, have Download be
based in Las Vegas or Atlantic City during this adventure
so they cant arrest him if you choose the second option.
Five Card Studliness: Download gives rich old men
back their young wives by transferring them into robot
bodies in an unpleasant Stepford Wives twist.
Unfortunately, he has no intention of giving them their
actual bodies back. Why does he want them? Can the
heroes save them? What will the wives do when they find
out that they are no longer human?

Eight Men Out: One of Downloads newest robots is
designed to be undetectable by all forms of modern
examination, and hes replaced a famous baseball player!
Find the robot! Stop Download!

A Talent Tree Grows on the Internet: Download starts

a job search site to locate people who might be vulnerable
to his plans or useful to them. Can the PCs find the site,
located in a remote third-world country, and shut it down?
Be All You Can Be!: Download begins selling self-help
books along with self-help products. Unfortunately, these
are laden with a post-hypnotic suggestion designed to
make people surrender to Download and become cyborgs
or robots. Find Download and his factory and stop his
schemes.
C is for Cookie: Download sends out pinging programs to
get information on superheroes so that he can build a
robot that exploits all of their weaknesses. When he
builds the robot, it develops its own ideas and rebels
against him, making its own plans for world domination.
The heroes must stop it. Can the PCs get help from
Download? Should they?
Download in Love: Download falls in love with a PC.
Since Download doesnt have sexual desire in the
traditional fashion, the PC may be male or female as the
GM chooses. This form of love will include things like
turning the character into a computer program, placing
him or her in a special robot body, or cutting off several of
his or her limbs and replacing them with more efficient
parts. No one really wants to be in love with Download.
And Download doesnt particularly care if his affections
arent reciprocated. Let the games begin. This can work
even better if Download falls in love with the characters
Internet persona.
E=MC Squared: Download has figured out a way to
make computer impulses travel faster than light! Now
everyone wants the secret of how he does it! Can the
heroes battle their way to Download to defeat his latest

MICHAEL SATRAN
DOWNLOAD
Background: Broken. Robert Kesslinger was broken and
everybody knew it. His trailer park family tried to fix
him as best they could when he was young, but all Robert
wanted was to spend all of his time on a computer. He
didnt like his fellow students, he didnt make friends, and
he hated his teachers.
But Robert Kesslinger was brilliant, and the United
States government knew it. He hacked the NSA database
when he was twelve, and after spending a year and a half
without a computer, he went to a special school where
they taught him advanced computer techniques. Robert
blazed through the courses as if they werent there. He
was disliked but brilliant. Unfortunately, Robert
Kesslinger wasnt merely rude he was an obsessivecompulsive sociopath. Machines were all he cared about.
It was like he was a part of them.
The NSA secretly tested Robert and found out that he
was a mutant with the powers of cyberkinesis and
cyberpathy. Robert was placed under heavy guard, and
his family was told that Robert was working on top-secret
projects for the government. He was nineteen years old.
The United States Army was amazed by Robert and
allowed him to qualify for a degree over the Internet so
that he could continue to work for them right out of high
school. Robert loved working for the Army. The machines
he got to work with were the biggest, best, and most
destructive in the world.
Robert built firewalls, set up computer security
systems, designed advanced prototype networks in his
head, and then built them all for his military masters. He
didnt care if he was killing people overseas or saving
them. He didnt care if he was hurting families or saving
their loved ones. He didnt care about serving his country.
All Robert Kesslinger cared about was his machines and
his latest new toy.
Finally Robert began to grow dissatisfied with the
resources that the Army was providing him. He knew that
he could design better networks, more powerful servers,
and more efficient machines. He wanted to build systems
that would far outstrip the modern capabilities of any
other nation, company, or power on Earth. Robert began
stealing stray pennies and percentages of coins from bank
accounts and manipulating foreign currencies to acquire a
vast fortune that was then secretly transferred via
electronic fund transfers into the budget of the United
States military. At first, no one was the wiser.
For eight long years, Robert practiced in secret,
building his networking projects and experimenting with
his powers, until he could effectively create a digital
duplicate of himself in the computerized realm. He built a
machine that allowed him to communicate with his digital
duplicate but discovered that he had a psychic link to it. It
was when Robert was in his lab for an extended period of
time that one of his digital transfers was discovered, and
General Paul Baines ordered the plug on his projects
pulled. Literally.

24

But Robert was still in the machine. When the power

was shut down there was a monstrous amount of
electrical backlash and a massive explosion. In a
stunning, hideous burst of electricity, Robert was one with
his machines forever. The special cybersuit he had built to
enhance his cyberpathy was fused to his body and his
face, making him a slender cybernetic monstrosity. What
was left of his face was transformed into a horribly
scarred, vulture-like mess. Later, he even had to build a
bulging colossal optic sensor for one of his damaged eyes
in order to see properly.
Robert took over the secret military bases computer
systems and fought his way out, destroying numerous
vehicles, projects, and personnel on his way. He could still
sense his computer-world self, but it was as if a piece of
his own mind had separated off from him. Robert realized
that all brainwaves were controlled by electrical impulses.
With the right sort of equipment, he could transfer minds,
possibly even in and out of the mightiest superprisons in
the world. And with that same equipment, he could
remain in constant contact with his digital self.
With the government on his heels and hunted by
numerous
superheroes,
Robert
Kesslinger
went
underground. Taking the name Download, he began an
aggressive agenda of collecting unique computer security
protocols, building robots, and committing unauthorized
mental transfers. Many supervillains sought to acquire
his services. All of them paid him.
Download had only begun. If the world was treating
him as a virus, he would infect it. If the world was trying
to delete him, he would corrupt it. If they did not see the
beauty of the machines and his perfection, he would show
them.
Download would show them all.
Personality/Motivation: Download wants to integrate
everyone into a network of his devising, changing humans
into a purely cybernetic race. Normally this desire would
be considered by most to be completely insane; however,
other supervillains in your game world may choose to ally
with him. Download hopes to lead by example, by
providing robot bodies for other supervillains and hoping
that they prefer them to their own. Eventually, he sees
himself as the central processing unit of a vast network of
cyborgs, robots, and their Internet personas. Downloads
obsession can manifest in many different ways, but the
unique, accidental man-machine fusion that created him
has warped what is left of his mind. Eventually, he
believes that he will have the ability to transfer his
physical brain into a more powerful robot body.
Quotes: Your humanity is a fragile, reprogrammable
thing. Soon you will be better than you were before.
There is nothing that cannot be improved by the
addition of a little machinery. I think Ill start with your
left hand.

WAR OF WORLDCRAFT
Powers/Tactics: In combat, Download prefers to stay at
range and hide behind his robots. While strong,
psychologically he still views himself as a somewhat
physically frail military hacker. This is likely to change if
he transfers himself into a giant robot body.
Campaign Use: Download is a villain who exists in the
virtual world as much as he exists in the real world. He
presents a unique threat that even a fiendish robotic
mastermind bent on the destruction of all organic life
would have a great deal of trouble with. Download can
even build robot bodies for that fiendish robot
mastermind, an action that would no doubt confuse
everyone, even the fiendish robot mastermind! Unlike
many other computer-based villains, Download remains
in the background unless forced to become hands-on. He
likes to do things in a very big way but is unafraid to start
small, or take revenge against a particular hero in a petty
and unpleasant way.
Download has a secondary use as a facilitator villain
who makes robot bodies of other villains. If the villains
need villain X for one of their sinister plans and villain X
is imprisoned in a suspended animation capsule,
Download can transfer the villains mind into a robot
body, and the plot may proceed. The players will, no
doubt, be doubly surprised to discover that that the villain
is still in jail, and more so to discover that the villain has
exploded into machinery and parts in front of them!
To make Download more powerful, raise his
Multipower to 120 Active Points and increase the cost of
all his powers appropriately. Give him enough Armor
Piercing and Penetrating to make sure his robot body
transfer works on anything. Give him an extra 10 points
of PD and ED, and make all of it Hardened and Resistant.
Increase his Mental Defense by 15, his Power Defense by
20, and his Flash Defense by 15. Add two Overall Levels
and two Combat Skill Levels.
To make Download less powerful, drop his
Multipower to 60 points. Remove his Combat Skill Levels,
and eliminate his ability to transfer people into robot
bodies. Remove several attacks of your choice. Lower his
PD and ED to 15, and cut his CON to 30 and his STR to
45. Remove his Power Defense and drop his Flash and
Mental Defense by 5 each.
Appearance: Download looks like a skinny man with
horribly scarred features, his right eye replaced with a
bulging, greenish optic sensor that takes up a good
portion of his face. His body is covered in dull black armor
that has a strange lustrous shine to it, and occasionally,
sparks of electricity flicker through it or over it. His
hooked nose and remaining grey eye stare bitterly out at
the world without compassion or any form of kindness.
The armor covers most of his head, and his hands are
long, slender, and meticulously crafted, with an extra
joint on the end of each cybernetic finger. Wrist pods and
leg pods dominate the forearms and boots, providing

additional weaponry and mobility. Engraved circuit lines

pass through it at points.
Though the armor is slender when Download moves,
it shows signs of being excessively heavy and dense.
Despite his thin frame, Downloads armor alloy makes his
body weigh over four hundred pounds. Additionally,
Download has built thermokinetic muscle wire systems
into the exoframe of the armor that gives him the
strength of multiple elephants, proving once and for all
that wimpy-looking doesnt necessarily mean wimpy.
A Note on Robot Bodies for Existing Supervillains
When Download brings a villain into a robot body, it
is usually structured to be as close to the actual villain as
possible unless this is impossible. (Translation: Dont
make a new sheet for a villain who already has one.)
Download does not normally make deals with mages or
creatures whose powers are inherent to their minds. Run
the villain as normal, including a Stun total, even though
the villain is in the body of a sophisticated robot. If the
robot is destroyed, the villain re-uploads back to prison,
where his original body lies. This effectively ends the
Transformation effect.
Download does not include remote-control circuits or
self-destruct mechanisms in these robots. While he is
malicious and ruthless, he also realizes that if he does, no
villain on Earth will ever trust him again. He has no wish
to be in that situation.

All Mental Transformations in this adventure

effectively transform people, but without having
the Machine Class Of Minds.
This ability is meant to represent Downloads ability
to place the minds of supervillains into robot
bodies. Yes, the soul stays with the original body of
flesh. Mind transfer means mind transfer, just like in
the Silver Age. It is also meant to be slow. On
average, a fairly strong-willed villain should take a
couple minutes to transfer, and the few villains with
Hardened Mental Defense shouldnt be able to be
transferred at all.

MICHAEL SATRAN
BYTES
Background: Download created the Bytes while
experimenting with an electrostatic matrix for containing
artificial intelligence. He succeeded beyond his wildest
dreams. These entities could be programmed with a set of
personality matrices, and with careful study be used to
mimic actual people! Download was overjoyed. Creating
the creatures is slow, but they are totally loyal and
valuable minions. Download uses a Basic Model for most
crude tasks, this model appearing as a single entity, or,
inside the MMO, a single Superhero, Normal, or
Supervillain Antagonist.
These creatures are extremely dangerous, as each is
effectively a full-blown supervillain with its own
reactions, capabilities and motives. Several of them may
be more than a match for a superhero team, especially
with proper preparation and planning. The creatures
occasionally have personality defects based on the
limitations of Downloads research but, nonetheless, they
are very effective, especially the advanced models.
Personality/Motivation: Serve Download. Download is
a superior being. Acquire information for Download and
destroy his enemies by the most effective means available.
Quote: (as impersonated being) Im afraid your discovery
will cost you your life.
(as a superhero) Thank you, citizen! Your safety is
all that I require.
(as a PCs wife) Thats lovely, honey. Would you like
some vegetables?
Powers/Tactics: Most basic models of Bytes simply
assume a single form and act according to their dictates
until Download deems otherwise. In combat, they try to
get into the air, usually while carrying a large heavy
object that they can throw, and then fire ranged attacks
until they are closed upon. They possess the ability to
transport human minds into the MMO universe, but this
can easily be replaced with whatever server Download is
currently occupying. They can also get into and out of
places almost instantly as long as there is an electronic
lock or security pad.
When in battle with other machines, Bytes can
effectively dampen their resistor signals, weakening their
EGO for the purpose of controlling powers, like those of
Download.
The Limited Group of Special Effects limitation is
limited to the MMO world. In the MMO world, a Byte can
generate any special effect it wants. This can be
exceptionally
dangerous
for
characters
with
vulnerabilities.
The Bytes like to coordinate attacks on single
opponents, and will fight as a single ruthless unit if given
an opportunity.

30

Campaign Use: Downloads Bytes can also be used as

minions or copies of other existing supervillains if you
dont like the advice on Downloads sheet that says Dont
create sheets for villains that already have one. This can
create villains that are weaker or stronger than their
actual selves, throwing more confusion into the mix about
what a supervillain can actually do.
Bytes are not meant to be played for laughs; they are
highly sinister. Nothing is worse than finding out your
new girlfriend is really an electromagnetic robot matrix.
In low-powered campaigns, dont use the Advanced
Model Modification at all. Lower the Multipower to 50
points, and the defenses of the robot to 8/8. Remove the
Sight Flash Defense and the Defense Maneuver 1, and the
Combat Skill Levels. Drop the STR to 45, and lower the
SPD to 4.
In high-powered campaigns, all the Bytes should
have the Advanced Model Modification. Raise the
Multipower to 90 Points, and the STR to 75. Add 15
points of Mental Defense for the Machine Class Of Minds,
and two Combat Skill Levels. Raise the Acting roll to 20-,
and eliminate the Complication for personality errors.
Raise the PD and ED to 15 and give them 20 BODY.
A suggested list of Super Names for Bytes includes:
Shockthunder, Invincible Hand, The Ionic Man,
Relentless, Tangentron, The Golden Hammer, Presidium,
Glorion, The Caballero, and Defensor.
Appearance: Bytes look like whatever Download
programs them to look like. Many of them look like
superheroes or supervillains, and some look like soccer
moms or a next-door neighbor. Unless you are using the
Advanced Model Modification above, this form cannot be
changed until the electrostatic intelligence is dispersed.
Choose colorful descriptions based on the name of the
superhuman, or a description of whatever Normal the
Byte appears as.
Byte Plot Seeds
A Taste for Data and Romance: One of Downloads Bytes
develops a personality quirk. Its in love with one of the
PCs! Is it possible? Could this be one of Downloads
tricks? Will love conquer all, or will it just get
overwritten?
Elect Tom Zimmerman!: Theres a new politician in town.
Hes honest, forthright, and genuinely likable. Is Mr.
Zimmerman one of Downloads Bytes?
Love Thy Neighbor: A new neighbor moves in next door,
but the new neighbor is a Byte, and is secretly plotting
the heros destruction. For added misery, it could be a
whole family of Bytes.
Renegade: One of Downloads Bytes goes rogue, and
brings vital information to the PCs. Is this legitimate, or
is this one of Downloads schemes?

MICHAEL SATRAN
ROBOTS (BITS)
Background: Downloads first attempt at designing
robots yielded small spherical robots about the size of a
basketball. They display moderate intelligence, can
perform a number of tasks for him, and obey orders well.
Unfortunately, they exhibit a little more self-will than
they should sometimes, and love to do things for their
master, sometimes without his permission.
Personality/Motivation: Serve Download. Download is
a superior being.
Quote: None. The robots cant speak.
Powers/Tactics: Downloads robots swarm about like
flies and attack a single target until he, she, or it is
defeated. They ruthlessly surround people and use pack
tactics against them, blasting and blasting until whatever
is left is unconscious or dead.
The robots use their flight powers to surround people
from all angles and then shoot at them. Although people
think the robots dont really get any pleasure out of their
work, their rudimentary intelligence allows them a secret
glee. In an emergency they will use themselves as shields
to protect their master from injury or death.
Against physically tough opponents, they will drain
the targets EGO and wait for their master to mentally
attack those opponents if Download is present. The robots
are unafraid to coordinate attacks against a single target,
and frequently do so.

Campaign Use: Downloads robots are useful as minion

creatures for any number of supervillains, even if you
dont actually use Download. If Download is defeated
permanently, someone else can steal his robots and use
them for his own evil ends.
Alternatively, if your campaign is slightly lighter in
tone, you can occasionally play the robots for laughs,
doing things that they think Download wants for them to
do or that they feel advance Downloads plans. Even a
not-so-bright robot can have a good idea.
To make the robots more powerful, raise their Flight
to 40 meters and their Multipower to 60 points. Raise
their defenses to 10/10 and add +1 OCV and +2 DCV.
Give them 10 points of Power Defense and 15 points of
Mental Defense. This option can also be used if you want
to give Download a Master Robot leader. If using this
option, give that robot more skills, an INT of 20, and raise
its STR, DEX, OCV, DCV, and SPD by 10 Character
Points Each. This makes a really tough robot, but in a
high-powered game, its little more than a superior agent.
To make the robots less powerful, lower their
Multipower to 35 Active Points. Lower their OCV and
DCV by 1, and remove their Sight Flash Defense.
Eliminate their Perception Roll modifiers and Defense
Maneuver 1.
Appearance: Downloads robots look like silver
basketball-sized spheres with four silvery tentacles that
allow them to walk and fly. They have a rotating optical
pod that comes out of their top, though the robots can
easily flip over to put this on the bottom. There is a
hypersonic flight generator built into the robots that
make a low humming noise when they fly. The robots
unintentionally generate a variety of electrical effects,
which makes their silvery surfaces crackle with electricity
when they attack.
Robot Plot Seeds
Independent Operator: One of Downloads
robots goes rogue and decides it just wants to
have fun. Download wants to destroy the
robot! Does the robot just have a
programming quirk, or does it really have a
personality? How do the PCs communicate
with a robot that cant talk?
My Robot Friend: Download finds a hacker in
a wheelchair thats almost as brilliant as he
is and under the age of ten! The boy doesnt
have any friends, so Download sends him a
robot. Can the PCs convince the boy that
Download is evil? What will the robot do to
protect the friendship for Download?
My Robot Toy: A different evil genius
acquires one of Downloads robots and
heavily modifies it, using it to commit
crimes. Will Download get the blame?

MICHAEL SATRAN
DELIVERY VANBOT
Background: Download needed a larger, more powerful
robot to provide him with additional muscle and remain
inconspicuous in urban areas. True to his love of
transforming robots, Download created a robot that could
change into the shape of a common black delivery van.
Unfortunately, when constructing the robots A.I.,
Download ran into several problems. For one thing, the
large robot was bitter about the fact that Download was
building other robots that were better than it was. For
another, the robot was extremely sarcastic, and liked to
let Download suffer the slings and arrows of its
outrageous insults.
The biggest problem was that in its transformed
state the robot was exceptionally large, albeit very quick
for its size, and Download discovered that the robot did
not like to spend too much time as a delivery van. The
quirky A.I. gave it an almost human persona that
Download had very little control over, despite the fact
that the robot was completely loyal to him.
Despite these things, the Delivery Vanbot is the
closest thing that Download has to a friend. Destruction
of the Delivery Vanbot will send Download into a rage,
and he will just rebuild the robot later: stronger, faster,
and more destructive than it ever was before.
Personality/Motivation: The Delivery Vanbot, despite a
sarcastic nature, is completely loyal to Download. It
enjoys battling others. When it gets a good shot in, it will
utter whoops of celebration. If it gets the final blow in
during a combat, it will perform a celebration dance
similar to that of many sports personalities after scoring.
It has no dancing skills and is very large. Keep this in
mind. It very much enjoys smashing things, objects, and
people; however, it still suffers from the same
disadvantages of the other robots.
Quote: Good evening, I am the Delivery Vanbot. I
always deliver. Lets start with your posterior!
I regret to inform you that Download controls my
programming. If you wish to take it up with him, I am
afraid I must smash you into your component parts.
You will soon be at peace because of my superior
firepower. I will record your defeat in order to gloat later.
Powers/Tactics: The Delivery Vanbot is very brutal and
straightforward. It uses its Blast on most targets, its
Autofire and Armor Piercing Blasts against tough targets,
and is hardly afraid to pick up local flora, fauna, and
vehicles and throw them at the PCs.
The Vanbot is unafraid to hide in parking lots, and
use its natural car-ness to its advantage. If anyone is
foolish enough to enter the Delivery Vanbot while it is in
Van mode, he may be in for a rude surprise. It can still
fire its weapons when it is a van, either inside or outside.
The Delivery Vanbot is equipped with a satellite link
and navigation system, which reflect its high Area
Knowledge and Navigation scores. The complicated

34

equipment that runs the transformation sequencer

operates oddly with the AI, giving this robot CON and
STUN scores rather than Automaton powers.
The Omni-Cannon is built into the Vanbots right
arm, and looks like a truly impressive piece of
multifunctional weaponry. Download has been thinking
about installing a rocket launcher into the right arm. The
robot has an extendable data connector for connecting to
computers that is easier to use than its massive hands
and feet.
Campaign Use: The Delivery Vanbot is useful for a
variety of roles. It can be used as just about anyones
minion, or for a more story-oriented approach, Download
can offer the Delivery Vanbot to others as a mercenary
bruiser with stealth capabilities. Dramatically, the
presence of an ominous black van is a standard trope, but
with the twist of players searching it and looking for a
remote control, they may be in for a very rude surprise as
a robot grabs one of them and starts crushing.
In low-powered campaigns, lower the Vanbots STR to
55, and remove its Combat Skill Levels. Eliminate its
Flash Defense, and lower its OCV by 2. Adjust the Shape
Shift so that the Vanbot is easier to detect, and lower the
Multipower to 60 points.
In high-powered campaigns, raise the Multipower to
90 and its STR to 80. Give it a variety of Area Of Affect
attacks that work versus Power Defense. Raise its OCV
and DCV by 2 each and give it two Combat Skill Levels.
Give the robot 15 points of Power Defense, and 20 points
of Mental Defense. Raise its MDCV to 7, and EGO to 23.
Add additional Enhanced Senses like Spatial Awareness,
Radar, and Passive Sonar. Make all of them targeting.
Appearance: In Van mode, the Delivery Vanbot looks to
be a standard black delivery van with plain black
bumpers and a mirrored windshield. In robot mode, the
Delivery Vanbot looks like a van converted into a
humanoid, with a head sticking out of the top of the main
body and arms and legs shooting out of it. Its right
forearm, which contains a large electrostatic generation
pod, is visibly larger than its left.
Delivery Vanbot Plot Seeds
Deliver Me to Evil: Download sends the Delivery Vanbot
to kidnap someone and hold him for ransom! Whats
Download up to? Can the Delivery Vanbot be swayed?
Drive: The Vanbot enters an illegal long-distance road
race for money and prizes. Is the robot out to prove itself
to its evil master? Or is this one of Downloads schemes?
Speedy Delivery: Download has the Delivery Vanbot
available to rush a stolen heart to an illegal heart
recipient. Can the PCs get there in time? What if the
heart isnt going to someone undeserving, but just
someone desperate enough to contact Download for help?
Who gets the heart?

MICHAEL SATRAN
DELIVERY VANBOT

36

WAR OF WORLDCRAFT
JORGI VAN DER VOOT
Background: Jorgi Van Der Voot was born to a middle
class family in Amsterdam, Holland. He grew up in a
loving home, and was exceptionally excited when he got a
chemistry set for his fifth birthday. Jorgi swiftly became
obsessed with science. He was so good at science that he
was able to go to university for science at the age of
fifteen. By sixteen, he had surpassed many of his
professors and, by seventeen, he was engaging in research
with graduate students. Jorgi was on top of the world.
Unfortunately, Jorgi had fallen in with some less
than reputable elements on campus, and several of them
decided to steal his keys while he was sleeping and throw
a party in the atomic clock room. The boys were caught,
but Jorgis scholarships were cancelled. He vowed revenge
against the university, looking for ways to destroy an
honorable Dutch Institution.
Agents of S.P.I.D.E.R. found him, and offered Jorgi a
chance to use his brilliance for a very large sum of money.
Jorgi wouldnt get any degrees, and he would have to
leave his family behind, but he would get to work with the
best equipment, in a world without any scientific limits.
Whatever he required would be his.
It took all of five seconds for Jorgi to accept. Within
six months, a giant robot spraying acidic gas had
destroyed the Universitys atomic clock. Within twelve,
Jorgi was the head of S.H.A.P.E. (SPIDER Human
Advancement Project of Evolution) S.P.I.D.E.R.s
superpowered design arm. Jorgi has been there ever
since, behind the scenes, a manipulator, a user, and an
experimenter. He just doesnt have any moral qualms
about doing things that most scientists would consider
dishonorable or insane.
Jorgi could easily be running half of S.P.I.D.E.R.s
operations himself, but he prefers not to waste time on
tactical situations and spending time in his lab. Most of
Jorgis subjects are volunteers, but he has no qualms
about performing experiments on those who are not so
fortunate. Jorgi Van Der Voot has been working for
S.P.I.D.E.R. for thirty years. He likes his creature
comforts, his fine wines, and his secret island in an Asian
archipelago. Hes a sinister leopard that has no intention
of changing his spots.
Personality/Motivation: Jorgis only love is science. He
doesnt love people, women, men, machines, or any of
those other things. He only likes creature comforts and
experiments. While he can put on a faade of being
pleasant and sociable in public, this is a clever front
designed to hide his true misanthropy from the world.
Jorgi will experiment on anything or anyone he is
given access to, and will hardly bat an eye when asked to
do something horrible in private. He is a classic mad
scientist, although he is cold, with very few psychological
buttons to push. Jorgi is also total coward. He despises
fisticuffs and all forms of combat, and will run at the first
sign of trouble.

Quote: He who runs away never has to fight in the first

place!
I suppose you might wonder why I breed mutants,
make superbeings, and work for a group of world
dominating madmen? Its simple. I like doing these those
sorts of things.
Thats Van der Voot! Not Mr. Voot! Not Mr. Van!
Van Der Voot!
Powers/Tactics: Jorgi has one tactic in combat: he runs
away. After all He who runs away, lives to run away
again! He will never engage in combat unless his back is
completely to the wall, and then he is more likely to
surrender and escape later. If Jorgi has one unique
ability, its the ability to memorize where everything in
his laboratories are and get to them quickly, a practice
that he has developed over many years of being pursued
by the worlds superheroes.
If Jorgi is encountered in his lab, there may be
weapons that he is currently developing for S.P.I.D.E.R.s
use. If such is the case, use his sciences to build truly
unpleasant creations.
Equipment: Many other gadgets are possible for Jorgi,
but Jorgi has no interest in combat. Most of his devices
are built to either hinder heroes by slowing them down, or
to improve his chances of a successful escape. He should
have very few damage dealing devices. He isnt fast. He
isnt mighty in combat, and he knows it. If he must defend
himself, he will do so with area effect attacks blended
with escape tactics.
Campaign Use: Jorgi Van Der Voot exists in a dual
capacity as one of S.P.I.D.E.Rs finest scientists and a
secret Power Broker who can grant people superpowers
for a price. There is no guarantee that Jorgi will succeed
in giving someone powers, and a character that exposes
himself to Jorgis experiments must be willing to take
risks and possibly die. Jorgi has absolutely no morals
whatsoever, and is willing to experiment on children and
even babies in the womb. Without his devices, Jorgi is a
normal human, and he has no intention of granting
himself any sort of super-abilities.
To make Jorgi more powerful, give him Combat Skill
Levels and an armored battlesuit designed around
escaping from people. Increase his stats to almost
superhuman levels, and raise his INT to 28 or even 35.
Add 50 points to his gadget pool.
To make Jorgi less powerful, remove the sciences he
needs least, lower his physical stats to almost normal
levels, and lower his gadget pool to 40 points. Remove the
Repulsion Shield and halve the force field.
Appearance: Jorgi Van der Voot is a thin Dutchman in
his late fifties to early sixties. His actual appearance is
that of a sharp nosed, lean man with sunglasses and close
cropped white hair in a crew cut. Jorgi uses a variety of
disguises in public for the obvious reason that he is a

37

wanted felon. He wears bland khakis or clothing local to
the area in which he is currently living.

MICHAEL SATRAN
LASERWHIP
Background: Debra Baskin was the sort of girl who
really didnt know what to do with her life. She was a
smart girl, but unmotivated, and was raised by her
middle-class family to get married after school. She spent
some time in college, but dropped out to join the office
secretarial pool. Fortunately, Debra was easily amused,
with few material wants.
But something was missing
Debra wanted to have fun. Yet her day-to-day life was
perfectly bland. Debra wasnt interested in parties, or
going out drinking with accountants and lawyers who just
got fatter by the day. She wanted some excitement but
had no idea where to get it. Her performance reviews
were perfectly adequate, but she spent a great deal of
time wishing there was more to life.
Then one of Debras geek friends turned her on to
Megaworld! She didnt have powers in real life, but now
she could pretend she did. Saving people, gaining
experience points, helping others, these were things that
got her attention inside of the game. Debra swiftly
became an addict. Within weeks Debra was playing
Megaworld for several hours a day when she got home.
She didnt need someone to love. She had her job in the
secretarial pool, her exercise program, and a ten-dollar a
month entertainment fix.
Still Debra wanted more. She spent only enough time
at work to be average, and began spending time looking
for ways to do more in Megaworld. It was beginning to
affect her relationship with her boss, Mr. Applegate.
Mr. Applegate noticed that Debra didnt attend social
functions like the rest of the pretty secretaries, and asked
her if she was religious. Debra gave a shy little smile and
responded that she really wasnt, she just had so much to
do, and lived alone. Mr. Applegate began investigating
Debra. He didnt find anything wrong with her, she was
just another woman who lived an extremely private life
and was bored at work.
Debra came into work one morning and was told that
she had one month to upgrade her performance or, since it
would be her fifth year without a performance upgrade,
she would be laid off. Mr. Applegate smiled in his office. It
was a tactic he often used. If the girl wouldnt sleep with
him, shed work harder, and if she did neither, shed be
fired. It had been a perfect situation until that moment.
Mr. Applegate had no idea of the events hed precipitated,
what he had created or how he had done it.
Debra came home two days later to find out that the
landlord had raised her rent by five hundred dollars.
Suddenly, Debra was desperate for money. Her family
couldnt help her - they were all the way across the
country - and she was afraid of losing her job and, even
worse, her Megaworld account. When she asked her
friend at work, Lisa, about what to do, Lisa took her aside
and said Listen, Debra, are you a lesbian? If youre not,
sleep with Mr. Applegate. Its not so awful, and youll get
your raise.

40

Debra was horrified. No. I dont want to. Ill find

some other way to get the money. She put an ad on the
Internet and tried to get a second job, but Mr. Applegate
was a notorious blacklister and no one would hire her.
Meanwhile on the Internet, wheels turned. Debra
received an email that read: I can help you. Would you
like to volunteer for an experiment? Ill pay you ten
thousand dollars.
Debra had no idea what she was volunteering for, but
she volunteered anyway. It sounded like fun. The worst
that could happen was that she lost her job while going to
the doctor. She packed her things and called out sick for
the first time in four years, making her way to the offices
of Jorgham, Vineland, and Slate.
The offices were a front. As soon as Debra stepped
through the door, two burly men grabbed her and forced
her into a chair. They locked her wrists into a device and
someone injected something into her forearm. She kicked
and struggled, and her lips let out a petulant little whine.
Then everything was darkness and begging for death.
When Debra awoke, she was staring into the face of a
strange, slender looking man. Amazing. He murmured.
You survived. If you are willing, we will give you work
from time to time, and you can do whatever you want
with the rest of your life. He chuckled throatily.
Debra felt more vibrant and alive than she ever had.
Her eyes opened wide as she saw herself surrounded with
a glowing, reddish field. Her chair was melting. I have
powers? She blinked. Real powers?
Apparently so. Jorgi Van Der Voot smiled to Debra.
And now, you can use them in any number of ways. I
would suggest using them to pay your rent. Jorgi did the
only thing he could under the circumstances. He wrote
Debra a check for ten thousand dollars. It was a small
price to pay, and no one would notice the nine dead bodies
in the back room. In return, S.P.I.D.E.R. will occasionally
require your services, teach you to use your abilities, and
grant you a full medical benefits program. He let out a
little chuckle. The benefits package was one of the ways
S.P.I.D.E.R. maintained control over its operatives.
Do I have to have sex with you? Debra asked for a
moment, completely forgetting that she was melting the
chair into slag.
Absolutely not! Jorgi Van Der Voot grinned. Its all
in the name of science, dear girl! Jorgi Van Der Voot was
far too afraid of his new creation to suggest anything else,
and beauty was merely a distraction that kept him away
from his true passion, experiments
Debra went back to her boring little job, and kept
playing Megaworld in her off hours. The best part of being
a supervillain was that they didnt need you that often,
and she could still be a hero in her off hours. S.P.I.D.E.R.
taught her to use her powers and abilities, including
granting her a shimmersuit that provided additional
protection, and channeled her laser field, since the field
didnt grant her any protection on its own. They even
gave her a martial arts master to increase her skill at

WAR OF WORLDCRAFT
Hand to Hand Combat, and use it with the whip-like laser
beams the sheathing suit helped her generate.
No one noticed or said anything when Mr. Applegate
suddenly gave Debra a raise. She never touched him. The
organization had taken care of all of it, just like they
promised. Debra didnt need to be Debra anymore. Debra
could be Laserwhip.
As Debra, she was a prisoner of being ordinary.
As Laserwhip, she was free.
Personality/Motivation: Laserwhip just wants to have
fun, and being a supervillain is the most fun anyone can
have, right? Laserwhip likes robbing banks, humiliating
heroes, and getting enough money to pay her rent on
time, even though S.P.I.D.E.R. insists on paying her a lot
more than she needs, thats not what Laserwhip is in it
for. Most of her money goes into a cushy retirement fund
that shell be able to enjoy when shes in her seventies and
cant be a supervillain anymore. Debra loves having a
secret life, and smiles happily through all the office
gossip. No one needs to know. And even if they do find
out, theyll be too afraid of Laserwhip to do anything
Quote: Those powers youve got are really cool! Can we
go on a date?
Sorry about your special weapon. I guess it wasnt
that special.
I hope you guys dont need those diamonds! Theyre
my best friends! Who cares about the rest of the girls?
Powers/Tactics: As Laserwhip, Debra can generate a
field of laser energy. Her shimmersuit helps her control
this energy, shaping into the form of a laser-like whip
that she can use to cut objects, fire short range blasts, and
melt through things. She can maintain the field of energy
to protect herself from harm. No one really wants to touch
several thousand watts of laser field, and her martial arts
training enables her to hold her own against experienced
heroes.
For brief periods of time, Laserwhip can transform
into solid light, move through walls, and become
completely intangible. This costs her a great deal of
energy, and she really only uses it when she needs to run
away.
Debra is fascinated by powers and superheroes, but
loves watching other heroes in action while she fights.
While this makes her almost unfazable, her Megaworld
fangirlishness gets the better of her sometimes, causing
her to feel sympathy for people shes humiliating. Most of
the time, though, they just deserve it. She likes to get in
and mix it up, but if people show signs of actually trying
to kill her, shell run away to fight another day.
Campaign Use: Laserwhip is a mercenary supervillain,
who S.P.I.D.E.R. occasionally uses to do their dirty work.
She loves a good scrap, but is playful and teasing,
especially with handsome heroes who she might like to go
out on a date with. Heroes with public identities beware.
If other characters play on the MMO, Laserwhip can
be their internet friend, who chats with them every so
often and goes out with them after hours to talk game
strategy and hero team business. Imagine the look of
surprise on their face when they discover that their

gorgeous Internet lady friend is really the villainous

Laserwhip. Imagine the look of surprise on your face
when they decide to date her anyway.
To make Laserwhip more powerful, improve her
martial arts, lower the END cost of her Desolidification,
increase her leaping, and add more DEX, OCV, DCV, and
SPD. Raise her Multipower to 90 active points, and give
her another level of striking appearance. Raise her PD to
25 and ED to 30.
To weaken Laserwhip, remove her martial arts
damage classes, lower her DEX, OCV, DCV, and SPD.
Remove one Combat Skill Level, and lower the
Multipower to 50 Active Points. Remove her Sight Flash
Defense, and eliminate her Desolidification. Drop her
STUN total to 35.
Appearance: Debra is an attractive secretarial brunette
with shoulder length hair in her mid twenties. She wears
ladies business suits during the week, and sneakers and
jeans on the weekend.
As Laserwhip, she wears a shifting navy and black
shimmersuit that ripples a little in bright light, complete
with goggles that conceal her face behind a three-quarter
face mask. Only her lips and hair are visible. On her wrist
is the device that controls the laserwhip focusing
equipment, but it isnt immediately obvious that its what
the device is for. The suit has red gauntlets and boots,
and the goggles are highlighted with a slight reddish
tinge.
Laserwhip Plot Seeds
I Cant Believe You Missionstole Me!: Laserwhip discovers
that someone missionstole something from her in
Megaworld that she really wanted, and now the mission is
no longer available. Administrator complaints have
proved futile, and now Laserwhip wants revenge! Can the
PCs save an embittered supervillainess who wants whats
rightfully hers? Should they save the jerk who
missionstole her from Laserwhips wrath?
Laserwhip in Love: Laserwhip decides that a PC is the
cats pajamas, and just has to be his one and only. If the
PC has a girlfriend, all sorts of almost-deadly things will
happen to his girlfriend while Laserwhip moves in on
him. If the PC is single, well, Laserwhip will turn her
seductive wiles to making him hers, twenty four/seven.
Depending on how powerful and dangerous the hero is,
S.P.I.D.E.R. may even be willing to allow it, if it keeps
him out of the way of their operations and keeps
Laserwhip happy.
Light the Night: Someone kidnaps Laserwhip to use her
as a battery to power a laser with the power to melt the
city! Can the PCs stop the laser? Can the PCs save
Laserwhip? See Laserwhip in Love for a possible
consequence of this plot seed!
