wemustlookelsewhere.
SuperJV/JDisnotanFMsynth,butithasaniceLFOthatcanrunprettyfast,andwithalittle
experienceinrealFMprogrammingitisnothardtorecreatesomebasicFMsounds.Pleasekeep
inmindthatwetalkaboutreallybasicFMsoundscreatedfromonlytwooperators(YamahaDX
7forexamplehas6operators).AndeventhosetwooperatorswewillbuildonSuperJV/JDare
veryprimitive,comparedtoanyrealFMsynth.

Wewillcreateoneofthedeepestbassesever,thatgoessubsonic,muchbelow20Hz.Ifirst
builtthisbassontheYamahaSY77somelongtimeago,butsinceitrequiresonlytwo
operators,irecentlycametoideatotrytoemulateitontheJV/JDsynth.Ok,itwillnotsoundas
powerfulastherealone,butitwilldemonstratethatitispossibletodosomeprimitiveFMon
theJD,JV,XP,XVsynthline.
Wewillbeusingtwooperators.TheWG(tonegenerator)willbethecarrier,andLFOwillbethe
modulator.Soundwillbemadebytheclassictwopointdownrampenvelopeappliedonthe
modulatorthatis,themodulatorlevelstartsloudandthenfadesaway.OntherealFMsynth
youwoulddothatwithanenvelope.UnfortunatelyontheSuperJVyoucantapplyanenvelope
(ENV)tomodulatethelevelofLFO,soonthefirstsightitappearsourFMsoundwontfunction
properly.Butthereisaworkaroundforthatissue.WewillbuildtheenvelopeontheLFOusing
ramp,whichRolandjustcallsLFOFadeIn/Outfunction.Inotherwordsyougotsimpletwopoint
envelopethatcanbeappliedtoLFOiknowitisprimitive,butbettersomethingthannothing.

switchingLFOtosinewaveandtryC2C4notesthatwillsoundbetterwithit.Youwillalsouse
sinewaveintheLFOforallmetallicandbellsounds.Ortobeprecise,youshouldusesinewave
LFOinalmostallFMsounds,exceptthoseinlowpitchrangewhereyouwilluseSAWDWwave
tocompensatethelackofpunch.
