Prlogo
praticamente todas as variaces do grande Mestre.
Vav, Suassuna & Dirceu, Slvio Acaraj, Mestre Trara, Canjiquinha,
Waldemar, Joo Grande, Joo Pequeno, Gato Preto, etc; e tambm

O BERIMBAU DA BAHIA
Prologue
The first version of this book was a photocopied edition of my manuscripts used in the workshop on technique and notation berimbau
who rode in 1986 at the UFBA (Federal University of Bahia), at the
invitation of the students in classical percussion from the University
and their professor at the time, Fernando Santos. Since then, I knew
I had to edit the job. This edition is a revised and updated version of
the first edition.
This book is divided into two parts: Traditional Berimbau (Chapters
1, 2, 3 and 4) and Modern Berimbau (Chapters 5 and 6).
In the first part, we will study the traditional touches to berimbau
used in Capoeira Regional and Angola. For seven touches of Capoeira
Regional of Mestre Bimba, I chose to transcribe them, step by step, exactly as written by the master disc in his Curso de Capoeira Regional. When I say exactly, Im making a mistake, because as Muniz Sodr
says in his book Mestre Bimba, Corpus Mandingo, his berimbau
is inimitable, since he was one of the biggest players in the history
of capoeira berimbau if not the greatest. Here comes a very special
phenomenon: This recording Bimba has a strong influence and importance to the traditional berimbau that most large berimbau players
know the background of Bahia this disc, and can remember almost
every variation of the great Master. And the most curious is that many
who say they dont know of the disc, they also play almost all the same
variations are it! It is a beautiful recording, where one could appreciate
the musicality, simplicity and strength of traditional music of Bahia for
berimbau.
Other touches of poultry in the book are adaptations made by me. I
tried to be as faithful as possible ways to original of touches without
inventions or stylized phrases. Result of an exhaustive hearing the
recordings of the great masters: Pastinha, Caiara, Vava, Suassuna
& Dirceu, Silvio Acaraj, Master Trara Canjiquinha, Waldemar, Joo
Grande, Joo Pequeno, Negro Gato, etc. Its also clear, from my own

experiences and findings on the spot after years and years trying to
unravel the mysteries of music for traditional Bahias berimbau.
In the second part of this book, we will study many techniques for
the modern berimbau. I use this word to define new directions and
ways of playing the instrument that are not used in music for capoeira.
We will see different beats and arrangements for berimbau, some
already recorded by me on other artists albums or in my own solo album.
If Bimba was the leading figure of the traditional berimbau, Nana
Vasconcelos was the leading figure in modern berimbau. He kicked off
for the discovery of a new language for the berimbau.

Isto aconteceu logo antes
A religio destes

A orquestra

conceito. O alab no improvisa, no sentido ocidental do termo. Ele
simplesmente executa as variaes correspondentes a cada ocasio,
podendo somente s vezes, durante as cantigas, alterar a ordem das
frases musicais j pr-estabelecidas.

esta arte to sofisticada: Gabi Guedes e Gamo, ambos do Terreiro de
Me Menininha do Gantois, e Edfran, Ney dOxssi e Erenilton Bispo
culturas musicais to opostas convivendo na mesma cidade tambm
a msica popular-profana no resto do Brasil.
Tavares, Gernimo, Edil Pacheco, e muitos outros baianos, Gil tambm comeou a compor msicas no ritmo do Ijex.
Nesta poca, ocorre a chamada africanizao do carnaval da

to lenta e misteriosa no Brasil.

O BERIMBAU
O berimbau um tipo de arco musical. Existem muitssimas formas

BANTU
The first to reach the Americas since at least 15353 and therefore
those with the most ancient and pervasive influence not only in music
in general, but also in vocabulary, folklore, cuisine, etc. We owe them
the samba drum Creole jongo, Makulel, capoeira, the stamp, the
1 Greek word meaning dispersion. Today it serves to designate also the disintegration which compulsorily
by virtue of the slave trade, black Africans spread across continents, and is used also to designate, by extension of meaning, the descendants of Africans in the Americas and
Europe rich cultural heritage and built by them. LOPES, Nei. Loguned: Santo menino que velho respeita.

2 Scholars sometimes refer to the Sudanese to call the black muslim, now call for the rest of the Bantu people
do (including Yorubs and Dahomeans), adding further confusion to designate the various African peoples
existing due to the high degree of synonyms.

drumming of umbilicus and also the object of our interest in this book,
the berimbau. In Cuba, the henchmen who beat the rhythm called
conga. In the Dominican Republic is merengue. The tradition of the
coronation of kings and queens congos4 generated among other manifestations maracatu, Mozambique, Congo and Uruguay, Candombe5.
The call of Candombl Angola the cult to the Bantu people still
well preserved in Bahia, has spread throughout Brazil and after centuries of syncretism with Catholic and indigenous traditions originated
Umbanda Caboclo candombl the Catimb, shamanism and other
syncretic cult spread throughout the country, even across borders and
coming to Uruguay and Argentina. These cults are still used, mostly,
the same three unique ring tones to Candombl Angola: Cabula, Congo and barravento, which are run by three drums and xylophones or
gan of mouth alone. The musicians of the orchestra of the Candombl
Angola xicarangomas are called.
1) Cabula
The Cabula, also known as Kabyle, Samba or Samba de Caboclo of
Angola could be considered, without doubt, nothing more and nothing
less, the grandfather or better, the ancestor of our beloved samba.
His touch appears throughout Brazil with some differences, however,
is unmistakable. We can say that samba (samba or viola) of the Recncavo the most archaic form of samba in Brazil6 and former is in
your own Cabula profane version, because its rhythmic patterns are
virtually identical.
In capoeira, Cabula, called Angola samba, or samba de Angola,
won the berimbau, creating a new language, samba, samba with
berimbau, which we will study this book in detail.
(...). LIMA, Paulo, Revista Batera &

2) Congo
The Congo also called Congo gold in southern Brazil and is the instrument agogo7, or gan, its most striking feature:
It is also undeniable that when we hear the beats of funk from the
hills of Rio de Janeiro seems were hearing the beat of the Congo. Often the electronic programming imitates sounds of drums and congas
with Congo taken very similar to the Bantu.
The Mestre Canjiquinha said he was inspired to create in Candombl Muzenza touch. Probably should have been inspired in touch Congo, because there is a great similarity between the two rings.
3) Barravento
The Barravento is the quick tap in bar 12 x 8 that we always hear
from Angola Candombl, and Umbanda Caboclo.
Unfortunately, it is little explored in the secular pop music. In Brazil, unlike Cuba and African countries, we only have one pace profane
widespread stranded for 12 x 88, jongo9.
7 O gan, g ou agog de uma boca s, junto com os trs atabaques Rum, rumpi e l
compe a orquestra do candombl de Angola.
8 Boi de matraca, in Maranho in northeast Brazil, can be understood as 12 x 8, but Id rather not put it this
way, but as 4 x 4, for reasons that I prefer to clarify to other work and fleeing the object of our study.
9 The Jongo has had its religious character, and today, even though secular, can still have certain rituals
related to it. On this subject, see the different concepts about what Darcy had jongo Serrinha Aniceto and

It also has a second, less used, which fulfills the same function and
replaces the first version. Even if he is considered correct, or right,
he is considered more primitive, more poor and more square than
the first.
This guide rhythm or timeline, and also its successor, under different names in many different speeds and with different instrumentation can be easily heard in the music of the Pygmies of Central
Africa (bayaka), the Shona of Zimbabwe (mbira music, or sanz , better known here as kalimba) in Haitian voodoo, tambor de mina Maranho, in Cuban music in general (rumba columbia, gowns, etc.) and
also in the Ketu Candombl of Bahia, in Aluj ringtones, Vassi, Ibi,
Ogun, Agabus, etc.
Sometimes, as in jongo, he isnt touched by any instrument, but its
understood and still shows the way forward.
This rhythmic pattern is perhaps the main factor among many
others to support the theory of a homogeneous black music across
the African sub-Saharan Africa, despite some sharp differences of
attitude Music between the Bantu versus Yorubs and fons as we
shall see.

Also the opposite occurs, the orisha can anticipate a dance step
which corresponds to a particular variant or bending of rum, and then

Interestingly, although several researchers point out these variations and folds as improvisation of the musician who plays the rum
does not exist in this concept African liturgical music. The Alabe

How are hundreds of variations that occur only at certain times,
some not repeat the same ceremony. Lay people or alien to the

execution of the rum in a Candomble Nago-jeje ceremony in Bahia
which in most cases is done only with a drumstick (drumstick and

not valued and studied musical universe.

2 Aguer de Oxssi.
3 A de Ossain. Also known as the Ossain aguer is often confused with the Oxossi Aguero, because they are similar in some respects. Maria Bethania recorded this song touch the Salve as folhas

5 Opanije de Omul.
6 Aluja de Xang. Rum is executed without aguidavi.
7 Tanibob de Xang. Rum is executed without aguidavi.
8 Vassi de Xang. Touch-up after Tani-Bobe, also for Xango.
9 Ijexa. All play without drums aguidavis. Tap the nation Ijex,
used by blocks that gave rise to afox Ijex-pop or afox of Bahian carnival.
10 Ijex de Loguned and Ossain. Its the same Ijex with rum
and reads slightly different.
11 Bravum. Source jeje. The basis of this and Le rumpi touch is
very difficult to get through the first auditions. We can say that 99% of
people listen to this rhythm the first time and cannot understand where
it starts, where is the one (the first beat of measure)
12 Vassi. We could call it classic Vassi or Vassi # 1. Also known
as tap run.
The Vassi touches to Exu and other deities and is usually the first to
hear a ringing ceremony. Its base is used for several touches, which
change depending on the touch name of rum, so we have different
Vassi, all on the same basis and with several different rums. The ringers Vassi are the basis of Candombl and are slow Vassi a unique
beauty and sophistication.
The Vassi term is not accepted by most of halberds, some did not
even know this name and even has a name that stops ringing.

When Olodum and Il Aiy began to have clear influences of the music of Candombl Ketu, there were very slow pace, the same character with calm, reflective, almost sad songs of this, forming the ideal

contributes greatly to the strong presence hitherto unpublished of
music Yoruba in popular music through the carnival of Bahia, historically overshadowed, as stated by the music of Bantu origin19.
Gilberto Gil makes indirect reference to such a polarity or dichotomy between music Yoruba, represented by Afox blocos of Bahia, and
the rest of the Bahias carnival:
Its the same thing in a room people dance wildly and in another, listen to Indian music, feel the smell of incense. And
more or less that afox is anticlimactic compared to the explosion of life and violence and things that Carnival has now.20

The Mals, black Muslim, have demonstrated little or no influence

always an inspiration for music, poetry and even to name Block african

The influence of Arabic music was indirectly and mysteriously in
northeastern Brazil by the Portuguese from the south, who had suffered a long Moorish occupation, and have arrived here intermingled
with many influences and Moors, a subject unfortunately little studied and discussed by scholars. We do not know exactly, as we said, if
the Mals, who in time were very numerous in Bahia, had a direct influence on music from Bahia, but we noticed some curious facts that can
make us believe that this could have happened-at least in the music
of capoeira:
The word conga (drum used in capoeira) is of Arabic origin.
But it is not clear that this god is the god Catholic, never saw the
name of Jesus in songs of capoeira, and never saw mention of the deities. Is this god of songs of capoeira a vestige of a forgotten and
remote disguised reference to Allah?

THE BERIMBAU
The berimbau is a kind of musical bow. There are very many forms
of musical bow in Africa, especially in Angola, but none seems to have
reached the sophistication of the current used in capoeira berimbau.
Do not stop at that very question of the origins of the berimbau,
because there are already several authors who address this subject:
Kubik, Shaffer, Mukinta (see Bibliography).
The berimbau, now used in poultry, is measured in feet, being more
used to the height that varies between 6 and 7 feet.
The orchestras traditional Capoeira Angola is to drum, one or two
cornets, reco-reco, agogo, berimbau and three that are called gunga,
medium and viola, according to the size of your gourd and its pitch21.
The berimbau gunga is the largest to the gourd and the grave tuning. It is the berimbau that defines the brand and tap to run, is usually played by the master. The medium is the berimbau with the gourd
smaller than the gunga and a tuning between the intermediate and
gunga Berimbau viola. The viola is the berimbau with the smallest
gourd and making more changes or kinks.
The orchestra of capoeira regional, created by Mestre Bimba is only
a berimbau and two tambourines, or a berimbau and a tambourine, it
was recorded in the LP of Mestre Bimba Regional Capoeira Course.
Today, we find capoeira schools and teachers who use the regional orchestra of capoeira Angola, and others that use both types of orchestra
depending on the type of game.
21 Theres another way of calling the trio of berimbau, which is bull bellows (most severe), gunga (middle)
and viola (most acute)

Ive got used to the sound of the gourd intercourse, which seems
to have a duration (release) higher than normal and the gourd is also
the sound of the TCHI (one of the basic sounds of the berimbau, the
one that looks like a noise buzz in English), it seems softer and less
strident.
Also the sound of wha-wah of the berimbau produced by removing

Chapter 2
CAVALARIA
CAVALARIA
Legend has it that at the time that the poultry suffered great persecution by the police, considered a marginal thing, the touch cavalaria was used to warn other capoeiristas police or the National Guard
Cavalry (the police on horseback) were approaching. Immediately, the
players of capoeira disguised and / or simply pretended to be dancing to the sound of drums and the berimbau. Currently, the touch also
serves to notify the arrival of a stranger at the wheel.
The touch cavalaria is well known and every beginning student of
capoeira and / or know berimbau playing it. Its a touch that has no
major difficulties.
First, we study the touch base, just touch the rehearsals of cavalaria
in the style of Mestre Bimba. Finally, we study the touch following the
transcript of the original recording of Mestre Bimba, step by step, as
he ran.

According to some scholars and capoeira, the touch Ina is a creation of Mestre Bimba, based on the birds song screamer. The word is
a corruption of Ina screamer. Muniz Sodr account in his book Mestre
Bimba, body Mandingo:
The screamers would be full of mystery birds, considered that
the forest guards, hunters or announce any immediate danger to the animals. On the other hand, comes from the Indian
tradition the belief that the bones and pointy parts of these
birds have healing powers, and protect against evil eye and
poisonous stings.

Tomei a liberdade
vez.
No seriam ento talvez
deslizes, simples acidentes?
LP de Me Meninha do Gantois.
do Gabi. Ouvimos depois a gravao e Gabi no comentou nada. Fiquei
Bimba, corrigindo assim o toque. Ouvimos depois a gravao novamente e Gabi no percebeu a edio, estava, segundo ele, perfeita.

O BERIMBAU DA BAHIA
BANGUELA or BENGUELA
The banguela ring (it is written in Bimba LP) is also known as Benguela. As we see on a map of Angola, Benguela is a coast city angolan
and served as port of the slave trade. We, therefore, the logical assumption that the word derives from toothless name of the city, Benguela.
We also study the rehearsals and then we have two versions of
banguela or Benguela. Bimbas version, here transcribed from the
original LP, contains some changes of pace that seem to break the
flow of the melody rhythmically, as he puts bars of 2 / 4 in the middle
of the constant 4 / 4. I took the liberty of adapting and toothless toothless wrote then adapted, that is my way of seeing how toothless and I
think the master should have run more times. By keeping the 4 / 4 - as
in the rings already studied and Ina cavalry - the flow is perfect and
we found no change of pace.
Many of you may wonder how can I dare to guess or imagine an
improved one-touch recording by the master of masters, so I do not
know personally the Bimba, nor saw any playing time. So I think an
explanation.
This phenomenon of losing his touch flow, sometimes happens in
the music of African origin in general and can be considered an accident. For example, in music of the Candombl similar thing happens.
A master of the drums can play the same touch dozens of times, and
in these times, he can break the flow and put a compass unaware of
2x4 and break the rhythm. To this the Cuban musicians call riding the
rhythm, said the pace was set up. We can also call this phenomenon reverse clave.
It is almost impossible if this happens there is a marking of some
other instrument making a 4x4 design (time-line pattern is the English name that some scholars of African music call these drawings
fixed 4 times), usually played in music of African origin by small brass
instruments - agogo, cowbell - or timber - clef. So, this accident can
happen more easily in tones that do not have this type of marking four
times, and also in touch with no singing or melody, or instrumental,
because the song always guide the pace and leaves no it breaks down
or mount.
In the case of traditional touches of poultry, we have no time-line
patterns of four times and also often do not have the corner (as in the
case of rings studied here), so this is very common type of accident.
RAMIRO MUSSOTO

O BERIMBAU DA BAHIA
I understand that many do not understand it and that they may see
broken or interference of bars in the middle of the 2x4 4/4 things as
natural and spontaneous african music, but they do not always happen, only in certain situations. There would then perhaps slips, simple
accident?
I had the pleasure of producing and playing on a hard ring of voodoo - without singing - my friend Gabi Guedes, one of the best Bahian
alaba from the new generation, a direct disciple of legendary Alabe
Vadinho Gantois. We recorded the touch of Oshossi aguero, a lovely
touch which fortunately we have the Vadinhos record of the famous
LP of Mother Meninha Gantois. In touch 4x4, 2x4 agogo mark ever,
and as we were playing the song without instrumental aguero, rum in
a folded 2x4, breaking the natural flow of rhythm, semi-unnoticed and
would not clash with any instrument or singing.
At any given moment, there is a 2x4 in a variation of the rum Gabi.
Then we heard the recording and Gabi did not say anything. I said nothing, but a range of recording, and the absence of Gabi, quickly edited
on the computer that variation, following the same principle and the
same way that edited heres the banguela Mestre Bimba fixing so
touching. Then we heard the recording again and Gabi did not realize
the issue was, he said, perfect.

O BERIMBAU DA BAHIA
SANTA MARIA
toc-la ignorando o micro-ritmo (somente colcheia e duas colcheias,
normalmente).
RAMIRO MUSSOTO

O BERIMBAU DA BAHIA
SANTA MARIA
The touch features Santa Maria in the original version recorded by
Bimba, the same characteristic of bars 2x4 Banguela touch. Therefore,
for these reasons that I explained in the text of touch Banguela, also
wrote a adapted version. For the first time in the book, here are the
microrhythm # 3.
This microrhythm or micro-rhythm is a rhythmic figure that is among
the triplet of 3 and the figure 134 (eighth and two sixteenths).
Several micro-rhythms or rhythmic figures that can not be written by
writing normal west, appear frequently in the music of african origin,
but also in almost all musical styles.
A further study on micro-rhythms remains to be done on the popular
rhythmic partially developed by me. Meanwhile, pay attention to this
subject, listening to the Mestres play.
Those who have problems to play this figure may touch her ignoring
the micro-rate (only eighth note and two eighths, typically).

AMAZONAS
AMAZON
The touch Amazon is a very nice and simple and it has a touch of
tambourine different with the traditional slap on only the fourth time
and doing well are variations in time, and listening to the accompanying drawing of the berimbau.
It is interesting to note that even with three hisses (TCHI) followed,
these are low volume, otherwise the tone is aggressive. It is perhaps a
little difficult to get the momentum to enhance the DINS and gifts and
not accentuate the TCHIs.
I used some phrases inspired by the Amazon in my music Tezcatlipoca, who is a solo berimbau and electronic programming.

SO BENTO PEQUENO
o mesmo toque do Angola, invertido.
Trocando a nota DIM pela nota DOM e vice versa a partir do toque
de Angola obtemos o toque So Bento Pequeno.
SO BENTO PEQUENO
Its the same touch of Angola, inverted.
Changing the note DIM by note DOM and vice versa from the
touch of Angola get the touch So Bento Pequeno.
The So Bento Pequeno is used to replace the litany in Angola as
we have seen.
A very interesting way of using So Bento Pequeno and is widely
used in poultry ring simultaneously Angola and So Bento Pequeno
note when the DOM of the berimbau playing the So Bento Pequeno is
tuned like the note that plays the berimbau DIM Angola.

O BERIMBAU DA BAHIA
SO BENTO GRANDE
O toque So Bento Grande, ou So Bento Grande de Angola, o toque mais ouvido numa roda de capoeira. Geralmente, ele acompanha
Isto acontece, por exemplo, no clssico lbum do Mestre Pastinha.
Porm, alguns poucos mestre angoleiros preferem continuar tocando
SO BENTO GRANDE
The touch So Bento Grande, or So Bento Grande from Angola, is
a touch more heard in a capoeira circle. Generally, he follows the long
string of songs that follow the litany (Angola accompanied by touch as
we have seen).
This happens, for example, the classic album Master Pastinha.
However, a few Mestres angoleiros prefer to continue playing touch
Angola after the litany.
Some Mestres of capoeira regional, following the tradition of Mestre Bimba, use the touch So Bento Grande by Bimba to follow the
sequence of songs.

O BERIMBAU DA BAHIA
SAMBA ANGOLA
grave, no DON.
Pinto assim explica o Samba Angola:
legtima terra do samba-de-roda.

SAMBA ANGOLA
The touch Samba, Angola is also known as Circle of Samba or Circle of Capoeira. It is traditionally done a touch around the bass note in
the DON. It was really written by various masters.
As the name tells us this touch, Samba, Angola is used to monitor
Bahias circle of samba. It is very common to hear this ringing in the
streets of Pelourinho, the circle away from the circuit, which includes
drumming on drums and tambourines. Very enjoyable to play, allow
for plenty of improvisation and creativity. In the aforementioned Masters album Vava and Macaco24, range twelve, called Samba de roda
berimbau with, we hear a rare Angola Samba runs mostly on high note,
DIN, a guitar played by Jorginho, with the Gunga touched by the Vava,
this usually touched on serious note, the DON.
In the liner notes of that album, the researcher Thiago de Oliveira
Pinto explains so Samba Angola:
The samba is not part of Capoeira Angola. Yet it is common to
imitate the marking of the Circle of Samba with the berimbau.
This is from the custom in some festive occasions, the capoeira be completed by a samba Moreover, the ancient land of
Capoeira Angola is also the rightful land of Circle of Samba.

SAMANGO
no seu CD Ginga Original - LP Capeira Made in Brazil - 1990. O prprio
Muzenza e o Samango...
...Eu senti vontade de inventar algum ritmo. Criei o Samango. Ento a dana diferente.
So Paulo. Os novos sempre apoiaram, porque sentiram que
aquilo prestava.
Mestre Waldemar e Canjiquinha.
O Samango

livro do prprio Mestre Canjiquinha.
Washington Bruno da Silva nasceu

Filho de lavadeira, Mestre Canjiquinha
foi sapateiro, entregador de marmita,
mecangrafo.

SAMANGO
Like Muzenza the Samango is a ring created by master Canjiquinha.
It has been recorded among others by Sylvio Acaraj on your hard
Capoeira primitive by Suassuna and Dirceu in LP Capoeira Cord Gold
Vol 3 and Mestre Braslia (Canjiquinhas student) on your CD. Canjiquinha himself explains in his book Alegria da capoeira the creation of touches and Muzenza Samango.
If the Master Bimba created a regional I found it good to create and Muzenza Samango ...
... I felt like inventing some rhythm. I created the Samango.
Then the dance is different. So I practiced dancing aside. The
samango is very violent area, flying shear, has everything. At
the time, other teachers hit the mite. The new ones do not,
like new. Even a student of Bimba did it in Sao Paulo. The new
always supported, because they felt that it paid.
Everything indicates that the ring was inspired by a touch Samango widespread in Brazil called Barravento, one of the three
rings of Candombl from Angola (the other two are the Congo and
Cabula or cabile, or Caboclos Samba) also used in the Candombl
of native, in Umbanda and Dance Maculel. Its a touch too simple,
like a simplified Barravento. It is the only touch of poultry in triple
meter (12 x 8).
Just as in and touches Ina Jje has DIM, this touch. I put the
Samango as I imagine Canjiquinha touched, unfortunately, he did
not write this ringtone on your only record the album Master Canjiquinha and Waldemar. To write the touch, I relied on the recordings mentioned above and in Barravento touch, touch Motivational
Samango.
Masters Gato and Waldemar also performed the Samango, as we
see in the list of rings run by leading teachers in the book of capoeira
Angola Waldeloir Rego25. The samango appears written Samongo in
this book, creating a little confusion. I chose instead to name Samango, because that is how the stroke appears on records by Suassuna/
Dirceu and Sylvio Acaraj, and mainly because thats what appears in
the book of his own master Canjiquinha.

MUZENZA
Tambm no
livro do Canjiquinha26 vem a explicao da criao desse toque.
muzenza... Se toca diferente, se joga diferente. Isso passou na
minha cabea assim: cheguei no candombl e ouvi tocando:
muzenza, muzenza. Toquei no berimbau. A eu disse: como
que eu vou jogar isso?
A eu ficava treinando sozinho no espelho.
Muzenza sim uma criao dele, inspirada no candombl, e bem
Em So Paulo, o congo tambm chamado congo
de ouro.

MUZENZA
The Muzenza is another touch created by Mestre Canjiquinha. It
has been recorded by Sylvio Acaraj on your hard Capoeira primitive.
Also in the book Canjiquinha27 comes the explanation of the creation
of touch.
If the Mestre Bimba created a regional I found it good to create
muzenza ... If you play differently, play differently. It went through my
head like this: I arrived in Candombl and heard playing: is muzenza
is muzenza. I played on the berimbau. So I said: How can I play this?
Then I was training myself in the mirror. Then I put Manuel, the
Dead Simpatia, Gernimo, coaching moves. Saw that it is paid. It is
the Muzenza.
Curiously in the aforementioned book Waldeloir Rego, Capoeira Angola, the author argues that the Mestre Canjiquinha gave his name
Muzenza touch inside game and that in fact these are the same tunes
with different names. There must have been a mistake by the author28,
because as explained by what we see and Canjiquinha the Muzenza
is but a creation inspired him in Candombl and is quite different from
the tap inside game that also will study and analyze in this chapter.
The ring was inspired Muzenza certainly in touch Congo, one of the
three rings of Candombl de Angola. The Congo is widespread and
popular throughout Brazil, as well as the Barravento, also part of Candomble Caboclo, Umbanda and is the main tap dance maculel. In
So Paulo, the congo is also called congo gold.
26 ABREU, Fred. Canjiquinha alegria da Capoeira. Fundao Cultural do Estado da Bahia, 1989.
27 W. Rego writes in his book of Capoeira Angola, an ethnographic essay, The capoeirista Canjiquinha has
a touch with the designation of Muzenza, which is nothing but the touch inside game. In Bahia, Muzenza
is the name given to the novice in the Candombl of nation Angola. When she appeared in public to give
their name to the orisha (god), is sung a song output Muzenza, where she is dancing a choreography slightly
curved. Based on this choreography, malice popular caricature decided to dance, increasing the curvature
of the body, giving the impression that it will be four feet. With this we can see, constantly, playing between
two men when one asks for anything other then what is not to give answers: - just dancing Muzenza ... this
is just getting in the four-foot (. ..). I inquired of Canjiquinha because he named Muzenza touch inside game,
he replied that only by debauchery. The author of this book believes that Mestre Canjiquinha may have given
the name of the mocking tone that had just invented, but not touch the inside game.

O toque
no dobrado, apenas marcado. A cabaa de ressonncia
permanece aberta enquanto so desenvolvidas certas batidas
independentes com caxixi.

O BERIMBAU DA BAHIA
DOS VELHOS
This touch was recorded by Mestre Vav Santo Amaro, son of the
famous and legendary Mestre Pop, who, among many other things,
whether it by the organization and formatting Maculel Dance Capoeira is very popular as it is known today.
Its worth reading what the researcher Tiago de Oliveira Pinto tells
us about touch in the album booklet29 in which we hear this touch:
Mestre Vav reconstitutes the berimbau touch of old, the
Mestres of yore Popo mainly known Master of Santo Amaro
decades from 30 to 60. Touch is not doubled, just checked. The gourd resonance remains open while certain beats are developed independent caxixi.
Interestingly, this touch - very simple and without major technical difficulties in implementing it - seems totally forgotten by todays
capoeira and has a unique feature, which is the amount of hits caxixi
pure and a fast timing of a piece of music. Very interesting also is
that this same characteristic appears also in touch Nan Vasconcelos,
The Music named Berimbau30. I believe that Nan did not know this
recording Vav, nor that the existence of this ring has reached your
ears by other means.
It seems that sometimes the berimbau leads the musicians who
delve into it in the same places musicals.
In chapter 5 we will study this that touch of Nan, which is 7 x 8, and
we appreciate its mysterious similarities. The number one example is
the transition of touch as the Mestre Vav executed him. Examples 2,
3 and 4 are my changes, the way I like to do this touch

O BERIMBAU DA BAHIA
AVE MARIA
Sylvio Acaraj gravou o toque, no LP Capoeira Primitiva
AVE MARIA
This is a nice touch that gives difficulty in implementation due to
quickness (puzzling) DOM connected to the TCHI. Namely, it is the
same difficulty of preparatory exercise #17. If the student has difficulty running it, my advice is to return to preparatory exercise # 17 and
go gradually increasing speed. This ring has been cited in the book
of Jorge Amado, Bahia de Todos os Santos street guide and mysteries31. The Mestre Gato and Waldemar Canjiquinha executed this
touch32. Sylvio Acaraj recorded this touch in the LP Capoeira Primitiva
30 Jorge Amado.

Gabriel Ges), Bigodinho, Arnol e Trara.
Neste ltimo, o berimbau est a cargo do Mestre Gato.

O toque Angola Dobrada mantm
sempre a constante Angola no quarto tempo, porm o segundo e
prolongada o mximo possvel, ou seja, at o prximo TCHI.
ANGOLA DOUBLED
This touch appears on the last track of the Mestre Trara LP and it
was recorded by Sylvio Acaraj. The touch Angola Dobled keeps the
constant Angola in the fourth quarter, but the second and third beats
are more syncopated and filled and remain in the grave, the difference
of Angola, which is alternately serious and acute.
The DIM statement, contained in the last quarter of the eighth time
should be prolonged as much as possible, ie until the next TCHI.

MIUDINHO

MIUDINHO
Everything indicates that this ring was created by Suassuna for one
type of game that he practices. He recorded this touch one of their
great albums . It has several technical difficulties and requires much
strength of the performer, because it makes very heavy use of DIM,
forcing the very left hand. It consists of several different parts in their
construction, so do not maintain a constant melodic, but it is an interesting and different touch. Slight progress and very excited, explores
a new language compared to traditional touches. Very good playing
and studying, this ring seems to have influences on Ijex fast version
and contemporary rhythms from Bahia, by his use of rhythmic figure
presented here.

MARACATU
colcheia e outra semicolcheia) devemos tocar o micro-rtmico #1,
como vemos abaixo:

MARACATU
Maracatu is a rhythm from Recife, Pernambuco, Brazil.
Starting Modern chapter Berimbau, here is an adaptation of Maracatu for berimbau. Nan Vasconcelos had done some adjusting this
rate for the berimbau and also fits very often for reasons of Maracatu
the tambourine and drums. Its a pace much played all over Brazil, and
very peculiar and easily recognized.
In the figure below we see that we introduced for the first time
wheezing in the casing, which we are leaving the drumstick rebooting
the rope, the same way you do in the battery or the samba school.

Also let it be understood that wherever you see the rhythmic figure
124 (what we call a sixteenth and an eighth note followed by another
sixteenth) we play the rhythmic micro # 1, as shown below:

cordas do Egberto Gismonti.
7x8s NAN
The album Saudades of Nana Vasconcelos is a masterpiece. The
first song called The Berimbau is a before and after in the history of the
berimbau. Surely, this song has made several people want to learn to
play this instrument (like me). We see here a few exercises that appear
in this music which is a concerto for berimbau and string orchestra,
with string arrangement by Egberto Gismonti.
In part in 7x8, Nana does amazing things and beautiful, and touching these exercises can try to understand what he did. The Caxixi in
the beginning, is written as it should be played. After the etc, the
caxixi follows the emphases of the right hand normally. It is not an
exact transcript of the solo. Compasses 15:16 maracatu sound like a
7x8.

O BERIMBAU DA BAHIA
SAMBA ANIMALS
This ring that I recorded on CD with Adriana Maciel Poeira Leve
I am also the producer of the album is a different samba, with high
note (DIM), the second and fourth time. It also has a preview of DOM in
the last sixteenth of each measure. The berimbau comes at the end of
music in the coda. I transcribed the different variations that I made the
recording that will be easily recognized if they hear the original CD.
The Gift of the berimbau is tuned in RE, and DIM gives just a MI. As we
said earlier, because of the smaller size of the stick, berimbau with the
DOM tuned in RE, or higher scores (MI, FA, SOL) got DIM a MI easily.
Not so with berimbau with the lowest pitch that this RE. The tone of the
music is lower MI.
