MBA Group Analysis by Hasan Haque, ID # 3487838

Introduction
This is a great opportunity for me to analyze and evaluate my MBA group formally. The
Emotional and Social Competency Inventory test has opened my thinking differently to judge
myself and pathway for corrective actions. I would like to take the advantage describing the most
exciting journey in the last eight (8) months addressing my group members each in brief and the
group as a whole in terms of strengths and weaknesses of the group, my role as an individual
relating to what went well, what could have been done differently by me, and strategies to hand
the same situations today. Furthermore, I am going to explain the gaps from the day of starting
the MBA to till date, especially considering the Emotional and Social Competencies Inventory
that will allow me to find the potential gaps and build strategies to improve further. Finally, I am
going to conclude outlining a five step process to practice and follow that will help me act
differently and consistently.
Orientation to my MBA group
It was full of excitement to work with a multi diverse (beyond national boundary) group
members for the first time in my life. Fortunately, we were six (6) members in our group instead
of five (5) for all other groups that added more diversity. We were from five different countries
bringing a wide variety of behaviours, customs, rules and negotiations that helped to learn and
innovate each of us in multidimensional ways. Our group also varied in terms of age and
experience in a variety of professions. Jacek (over 45) from Poland, was a blend of experience
and expertise of his own business of 22 years, Sakthi (over 30) from India, having experience as
a chemical engineer from one of the largely diversified countries in the world and working
experience in Singapore, Song (over 25) from China, another interesting dimension in my group
who studied physics but worked as a successful marketing officer globally, Morad (over 25) from
Palestine, a civil engineer who used to be very strict on maintaining the rules and duties of each,

Yemeng (less than 25) from China was very quiet in the group discussion and was real
innovative member in the group and me (over 30) from Bangladesh having mixed experience in
corporate and teaching.
Analysis of my MBA Group
My group was the most diverse group in the class following the one more extra person in
the group with a mix of five different countries, age and experience of members in the group.
The biggest strength was that everyone in the group was confident (except Yemeng) to do the
assigned tasks successfully and we made very good friendship shortly, cordial to each other and
especially, we had the respect for everyone. Initially, the very common weakness was that we
failed to understand what disturbs others due to the lack of orientation to different cultures and
customs of the group members. This was resulting some problems from the very beginning and
we have successfully mitigated the problems having an open door policy of discussion on
disputes that eventually made our learning curve upward slopping.
What I did well?
I had the dream to work in an international level in a multicultural society and MBA was
the first step fulfilling my dream. I took this advantage and dedicated myself to get the best out
of it working with diversified people in my group. Following my education in business I had a
better understanding on most of the subject matters better than the group members, but I keen to
learning the similar things from a different contexts and worried about my hot temperament (get
excited easily and behave irrationally) dealings with others. To my utter surprise, I was able to
overcome the problem though suffered initially, and today I can say, there are no such complaints
against me. Another important thing was that I have always paid attention to others and tried to
recognize and understand their emotions as working in a group requires the balance of activities

of the group. Song and Morad had the problem of understanding others problems sometimes and
I have been able to manage them successfully. Everyone in my group says that I am the most
cool and reliable person in the group that indicates the radical improvement in my character
considering the history before the MBA journey. Sometimes, some of us got sick or had some
appointment and failed to share their jobs that created dispute among the group members. I was
the first person who shouldered the work of others and convinced others to manage the work and
understand the situations. Finally, I was famous for systems of thinking and pattern recognition.
As discussed, following the diverse background of education and expertise we have debated in a
variety of ways and supported our arguments but difficulty was setting and arranging the things
for effective use. The group did their discussion without worrying as I was there to work as a
think tank to organize our thoughts.
Things I wish to had have done differently
Life is beyond the MBA group and academic objective and I have to come across a
variety of peoples, countries, society, customs and rules and regulations. I did not take the
opportunity to take independent opinion about my emotions, behaviours, attitudes towards others
sitting one to one with my group members to figure out the room for improvements. This would
help me particularly to avoid some simple misunderstanding among us and would lead perfection
of my attitude. I also regret for not setting the clear objective that lack the achievement
orientation of our group and lack of optimism. We have done great projects and academic
excellence jointly but now I understand that if we had set clear target and optimistic enough, then
we could have done some special projects that would clearly differentiate ourselves from other
groups. Moreover, we were satisfied to have the work done, i.e. sometimes we did not worked
setting proper plan. But this practice will certainly create problem in the workplace. So, I am

going to work setting precise plan in the future with the provision of adjustment as needed. I
have done great job in conflict management and teamwork but did not influence and exerted the
inspirational team leadership that is equally important to be successful. Finally, I was famous for
system thinking and pattern recognition as discussed previously, but it also restricted the out of
the box thinking to some extent as I did not understand and follow the total concept of the
strategy. I would love to change this attitude to get the best out of it.
Strategies to handle the similar situations today in the small group process
It is evident that I have to work hard to improve in several areas in different ways to
break the ice. In terms of self-management I have to work on both achievement orientation and
positive outlook to capitalize the capability I have. I would love to set objective and be positive
in executing tasks focusing on ability to adapt the changes needed. In the past, strict
consideration on various issues by me created problems in the group. Naturally, I feared to work
in a group before the MBA, but in this global village working in group is evident and key to
success. Since the module- I, I actually did not pay much consideration on setting agenda,
balance the needs, fight the right battles and agile communication, now I want to work in a
proper manner considering the outlined issues, where setting the organizational agenda will help
to lay out the steps of work, selecting the right people for the right job, and giving the importance
of the ability of thinking out of the box.
In relationship management, I am greatly lacking in inspiring people. To overcome the
problem, I am going to sell the benefit, paint the picture of doing anything properly, be open and
invite participation, reinforce optimism and encourage potential. Before this, I thought that
system thinking is a way to get things done anyway. But now I understand that system thinking is
a field of better picture and feedback relationship which is most important in group work. So, I

would really focus on getting feedback from the participants that will lead to avail the increased
benefits of innovation that is the outcome of system thinking.
Conclusion
This assignment is a great chance to review, analyze and set the future strategies. My
concluding remarks will follow a five step process. First, My Ideal Self I always dream to be a
socially acceptable person who will care his own emotional intelligence, take care of others and
inspire and influence others in a systematic manner. In doing so, I have to increase my capability
in influencing and inspiring people most and seek for feedback from people. Second, My Real
Self in this stage, I will seek for the potential opinion to asses my present state where I am and
how I am doing now and how people perceive me. This will help me to find the gaps between
actual and expected behaviours by me. Third, My Learning Agenda I will set my learning
agenda in this stage. For example, my Emotional and Social Competencies Inventory indicating
that I have to work on inspiring and influencing people more, improve the capability of positive
outlook, organizational awareness and achievement orientation. Fourth, Experimentation and
Practice here I would set the priorities and techniques to deal with new behaviours and assess
and analyze the consequences of the behaviours and set the next target. Finally, Trusting
Relationships so far, I have missed one thing greatly and that is feedback from my peers and
good friends. From now and onward, I will consistently practice to take honest feedback from
my peers and friends and learn from those feedback and take corrective actions.
