1. Your exam contains 7 problems and 10 pages; PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A COMPLETE
EXAM.
2. The entire exam is worth 100 points. Point values for problems vary and these are clearly indicated.
You have 2 hours and 50 minutes for this final exam.
3. Make sure to ALWAYS SHOW YOUR WORK; you will not receive any partial credit unless all work
is clearly shown. If in doubt, ask for clarification.
4. If you use a trial and error (or guess and check) method when an algebraic method is available, you
will not receive full credit.
5. There is plenty of space on the exam to do your work. If you need extra space, use the back pages
of the exam and clearly indicate this.
6. You are allowed one 8.5 11 sheet of handwritten notes (both sides).
7. Only TI30X CALCULATORS are permitted for this exam. You may not use cell phones during the
exam.

t4 + 1
(a) f (t) =
et + 1

(b) f (x) = 3tan

(2) = 3. Find f (2)
(c) Suppose that f (2) = 4, g(2) = 2, g (2) = 6 and

Compute the limits below. Your answer should be a real number, , , or DNE (does
not exist).

(d) Let A be a positive constant. Compute lim

x + sin(x)
(2x + 1)
x x ln(x)

(e) lim

2. (14 points) Suppose f(x) is a continuous function in the

interval (-3,7). The graph of its derivative f (x) is

shown on the right. Use the graph, and the information
below to answer the following questions.
f (1) = 21.3
f (1) = 0

f (0) = 10.6
f (2) = 8.7

(a) Find all critical numbers for f .

(b) Find all local maxima for f (x values). If there are no local maxima, write NONE.

(c) Find all local minima for f (x values). If there are no local minima write NONE.

(d) On the interval I = (3, 2) is f concave upward or concave downward ?

. If the limit does not exist write DNE.

(e) Compute limx0 f (1+x)
x

(f) Compute f (6).

(g) Let g(x) = f (x)2 . Find all critical numbers of g in the interval (2, 2) and explain how
you know that there are no others.

3. (15 points)

Consider the plane curve

y 2 xy + x2 + y = 22.

(a) Find all points P on the curve where the tangent line is horizontal.

(b) Use the tangent line approximation at (2, 3) to estimate the value of y when x = 1.98.

d y
(c) Find the second derivative dx
2 at (2, 3) and use this to decide if your estimate in part
(b) is an overestimate or an underestimate. Explain your reasoning.

4. (16 points) A circle centered at the origin

passes through the point (9, 12) (the units are
feet). A tube that is tangent to the circle connects this point to a point on the x-axis. At
time t = 0 an object starts up the tube from the
x-axis, traveling at constant speed 60 ft/min.
When it reaches the end of the tube at (9, 12),
it starts rotating counterclockwise around the
circle, still at the same speed.
(a) Find the slope of the tube, the point where it meets the x-axis, the length of the tube,
and the time t1 that the object takes to travel the length of the tube.

(b) Find the horizontal and vertical velocities of the object while it is in the tube.

(c) Give parametric equations for the objects motion while it is in the tube.

This problem continues on the next page.

(d) Find the initial angular position (in radians) of the object on the circle at time t1 , and
also find the objects angular velocity when traveling around the circle.

(e) For t t1 give parametric equations for the objects circular motion.

5. (12 points) An observer located at (6, 0)

is tracking an object travelling along the
parabolic path y = x2 + 11. Calculate the
maximum value of the angle between the line
of sight from the observer to the particle and
the x-axis, as well as the position of the object
where the maximum occurs. You should only
consider values of x where the object is above
the ground (i.e. y 0). Be sure to explain
how you know that this is really the maximum
angle. Hint: The maximum does not occur at
the top of the parabola.

6. (12 points) Chetna is racing around a circular track, starting at the easternmost edge and
running counterclockwise at a constant pace of 40 seconds per lap. At the center of the track
is a lamp, and 60 meters east of the lamp is a wall that runs north-south. When Chetna is
one-twelfth of the way around the track, how fast is her shadow moving along the wall?
60 meters

7. (16 points) Consider the function

f (x) = x5 e2x
(a) Determine all horizontal or vertical asymptotes of f (x), if any.

(b) Compute f (x). List both the x and y coordinates of all critical points. Determine all
the intervals on which f (x) is increasing.

This problem continues on the next page.

9

(c) Compute f (x). List both the x and y coordinates of all inflection points. Determine all
intervals on which f (x) is concave up.

(d) Sketch the graph of f (x). Label every point on the graph that corresponds to a critical
number or an inflection point.
