Desert Island Discs Script:

(Play theme music and then fade it in).
Hello and welcome to Desert Island Discs. Just sit back and relax! I will be talking to
you about some music. Here is the first song it is Indian Summer by Jai Wolf:
(Play the whole track).
The fun has started! I will play it again after I have told you some facts about the
song.
This songs genre is electronica and includes a wide range of electronic instruments.
They change throughout the track because they are mid tone and the vocal samples
are high tone. The tempo is 170 BPM. This means that the song is medium fast. The
rhythm adds unique new tones to the track and has ambient backdrops. There are no
harmonies, however at the start they are quiet and then they get louder. The talking
is in the background and it sounds like harmonies. In this song there are 12 melodies.
Despite there being so many melodies the motifs in this track are very original and
they are not repeated. This means that there is a new melody every so often. The
articulation of this track is very clear as there are not many vocals in the track. Plus
the flair is very good because the artist who created this track is different and
great at what he does. Also the artist has made this song non-metronomic. We know
this because the track is at different speeds.
Furthermore the artist has used sonic effects, for example, hip-hop and pop. The
talking in the background at the start echoes and there is also dynamic effects. He
has also added in some samples.
The panning of the vocal sample is in the middle and the instruments either go left or
right. This is effective because it makes the listener listen more closely to what is
being played in their headphones or speakers.
This track is not played live because it is played on midi instruments and sounds really
electronic!
The dynamics of this track build up over time because the track starts off quiet and
then progresses. Moreover the vocal samples are louder than the other instruments,
but then the instruments get a bit louder. This is effective because it makes the
track interesting and exciting.
Sound masking is used because the instruments are electronic. Also the samples and
effects go well with the whole track. Plus the effects are in time with the midi. This
is effective and is a good technique to use in your music.

The audio files have not been compressed because the threshold has not been
changed and the audio has not been reduced in volume. There is also a little bit of
attack, but there is no distortion. This has made the track balanced!
The artist has mixed the volume well. (When mixing the volume somethings have to be
louder then others). However this track is evenly produced because the instruments
and vocal samples go well with each other, even though they have different volumes
and tonalities.
Lastly this tracks clarity is clear because the instruments are midi files and the
audio files are recored well. Here is the track for the second time!
(Play the whole track again).
Next up is Matrix & Futurebound - Control featuring. Max Marshall.
(Play the whole track).
This track is of a drum and bass genre. They use the following instruments: electronic
drums kits, bass synths, synth pads, synth key 1 and 2 sound effects and lead vocals.
The tempo of the song is 174 BPM which tells us that it is medium fast. The rhythm is
very stylish because it helps the track flow swiftly. It is a beat that you will
remember and you could even dance to it. In Control there are no harmonies.
However the vocals echo until the end of the track. In this song there are 10
melodies.
The motifs of this song do repeat themselves, but only for effect. This effect is
created by the different special effects which are added in every time. These special
effects tie in with the newly played melodies. The articulation of this track is really
clear because even though the instruments are electronic they can still be heard. The
vocals are a little bit robotic which goes well with the rest of the track. Moreover
the flair of the three artists who created this track is that they are different in
what they do and there ideas are great together. This track is kind of metronomic
because you can play the track to a metronome, however for some people they might
say that it is too fast and upbeat.
There are sonic effects and plugins in this track. They were used to make the
different instruments stand out from each other. However the instruments could
have done with a little more special effects.
Also there is panning because the melody is in the middle and the vocals is panned to
the left and the instruments are panned to the right. However sometimes it can seem
like the vocals and instruments are in middle for some reason and I dont know why.

This track is not played live because it sounds really electronic and is played on midi
instruments!
The tracks dynamics are loud to start of with, then it gets louder and louder as the
track goes on. The vocals are loud along with the instruments. Furthermore the
effects fade in and out effectively because you dont really notice that they are
there until you have listened to the track more than once.
Sound masking is used because the instruments are of an electronic style. Plus the
vocals and effects are similar, so they fit in with everything else. Plus the midi and
effects are in time with each other. This is very good and is an effective technique to
use in your music.
In this track the vocals have been compressed because the threshold has been
changed and the vocals have reduced in volume. There is also some attack on the
electronic instruments, but there is no distortion. This track has been balanced
enough!
This tracks volume has been managed well because it is evenly produced. Likewise the
instruments and vocals are in time with each other. Plus it starts of at normal volume
until the beat kicks in at 0.36.
The track is clear because the midi instruments are from a professional software
called Cubase and the audio files are recorded in a studio. A studio recording sounds
like this!
(Play the whole track again).
The next song is Mark Ronson - Uptown Funk featuring. Bruno Mars.
(Play the whole track).
This song is a pop song. In this song the following instruments are used: guitars, bass,
drums, synthesisers and horns. The tempo is at a medium speed of 114 BMP. This goes
with the rhythm because the rhythm is very up beat and makes the listener want to
dance along to this track. Also there are harmonies in this song and everyone who has
listened to this song knows where they are. In this song there are 18 melodies.
In this song the motifs do repeat themselves, but not much. Each melody is
different, even through some are repeated. The repeated ones each have something
different about them. This makes this track fun and exciting.
The articulation of this track is clear because the singing goes well with the music
and you can even lip sync to this song. This song is easy to sing along to because it is
very enjoyable and outgoing.

By: Katie Morgan.

In addition to this the song has flair. This is because the track sounds professional
because the singing is brilliant and the editing is fantastic. This song is metronomic
because the drums were recored to a metronome, so the whole song is too.
In this song there is a lot of sonic effects were used and they are: synths, pitch
sliding (portamento) and brass from the soul and funk libraries.
This song also has panning because the singing is in the middle, however some people
might say that it is panned to the left.
This song is not played live but it is composed by a well known music producer who
uses professional music making softwares.
The dynamics of this song is very up beat, the song can be described as loud or really
loud. However the song has some quiet parts too, for example when Bruno Mars is
talking. Also the when the emotional tenor sings the music rises and falls dramatically
with the mood of the people in the crowd. The crowd is in the background!
Sound masking was used in this track. It was mostly used on the singing and
instrument samples and loops. However there are a few midi instruments in the song.
Compression was used on the bass. By adding compression it made the song sound
squidgy instead of warm and full like it normally is.
The volume has been mixed well!
This track has great clarity and is a simple idea that has expanded to make different
little melodies. Plus these melodies are very very clear. Listen for yourself!
(Play the whole track again).
The last song on this radio is Gangnam Style by PSY.
(Play the whole track).
This song has two genres and they are K-pop and dance-pop. In this song all of the
notes are fine, none of them are too flat or too sharp. (In music is very important
that all of the notes are in the right pitch. If some notes are not in pitch then it
could ruin the whole song). There are quite a few instruments that are used in this
song. These instruments are: synchrony square wave, synchrony saw wave, synchrony
brass 1, rock organ, ensemble strings, melodic tom, celesta, distortion guitar, reverse
cymbal, applause and hammond organ.
The music and the vocals go well together! Although I enjoy the song I would like to
know what he is saying because he sings in Korean.

The dynamics of the different instruments change a lot. This can be annoying for
some people because it changes the mood and meaning. However the sound is nearly
evenly balanced. (The song has nearly been mixed properly). This song is in time
because it has a beat, however it is hard to follow because it changes too much. (It is
changed more than 4 times).
Despite the tricky beat, the song is recorded properly and successfully. This is
because there are no pops or clicks. Also there are no cable nosies! As the song goes
on it sounds like there is feedback, but it is not actually there.
This song has no special effects, however if they were added in there would be too
much going on at once.
There maybe a lot of instruments in the mix, however there is one instrument that
lacks some clarity. This instrument is the ensemble strings because they are over
powered by the distortion guitar. Bringing down the distortion guitar will make the
ensemble strings stand out more.
This track has flair because it is very well known. Some people might find it annoying,
while some people might find is entertaining. People dance to this song because it is
amusing and cheerful.
Besides this song was popular when it first came out! Some people would say that it is
brilliant because it is so bad. However it is not that bad because it has a perfect
rhythm that anyone can follow.
Despite some people not liking this song it is listened to from all over the world.
People say that is bad because it was played a lot and it is not everyones cup tea. So
in this song there are a few errors, however not everyone will notice them. When it
comes to a song that someone likes you forget the mistakes because it doesnt matter
to you.
This songs mood is happy, so by listening to it some people would feel the same. I like
this song because it is different, but some may disagree with me. Even though this
song is bad you say how bad it is, but you cant really do anything about because it has
been recorded lots of times. We can edit these recordings and make them better
most of the time. If the recording is very bad then we cant do much to fix it.
This song is recored properly, it just needs some things changed, for example, the
volume.
All I can say now is to forget the errors and mistakes because if they were not there
then the song would be good like the other 3 songs that I have talked about in this
radio show.

Songs like this song are not bad it is just taste. I will leave you with this comment: If
you dont like a song it doesnt mean that the song is bad. All songs have something
good about, even the really really bad ones.
(Play the whole track again).
Thats the end of the radio show. Thanks for listening. I hope that you enjoyed it.
Right I gunna be quiet now and leave you on a high note. (Compose a high note using
a midi instrument).
(Play theme music and then fade it out).
Desert Island Discs Notes:
D3 hear and comment critically on the sonic and musical faults in recordings or
performances.

Song 1:

This tells us that there are no sonic or recording faults. The song is perfectly produced!

Song 2:

By recording this song in a studio the recordings and sonics do not have faults. This
means that the song is greatly produced.

Song 3:

These melodies are very very clear because they were recorded well and there are no
sonic or recording faults. This is good because it means that the song is mixed well.

Song 4 (Add inafter bar 278):

This tells us that this song has no sonic or recording faults. Furthermore the eects that
are added in are really eective because create more atmosphere, for example,

D4 critically comment on the textures of musical instruments and sounds and the eect of
the acoustic environment on them.

Song 1 (Put after thesentenceabout therhythm of the song):

The vocal sample is monophonic because there is only one of them. However the
instruments are polyphonic because there is more than one of them. Sometimes the
instruments accompany the vocal sample. This makes the song homophonic!

Song 2 (Put after thesentenceabout therhythm of the song):

This song is homophonic because the vocals are accompanied by the instruments. Plus
the instruments are played polyphonically.

By: Katie Morgan.

Song 3 (Put after thesentenceabout therhythm of the song):

The texture of this song is homophonic because the singers sing harmonies and
accompany each other. Secondly the instruments play polyphonically because they are in
time with each other.

Song 4 (Put after thesentenceabout therhythm of the song):

This song is mainly polyphonic. However it is also homophonic because the instruments
play in the background when the singer sings. Thirdly the singer does sing on his own
sometimes, so this makes the song monophonic too.

Song Structure:

Song 1:

This song slowly builds up. After this build up the cheerful beat comes in around 1:08.
The mood throughout this song is positive! Also the artist plays to the listeners taste, as
there are catchy ris. Plus there are parts that have a stronger bass and smoother vocals.
Furthermore the introduction and ending are very powerful because they go well with the
verses and the choruses. (These verses and choruses are the dierent melodies).

Song 2:

This song has 5 ris and they are F, G, A minor, C and D minor. These ris are very clear.
Furthermore it is clear that the start and end of this song are dierent. They are dierent
because the ending is louder and faster then the start. This is eective because you know
that the song is going to end. (The melodies are eective too because the verses and the
choruses go well with each other and they are an important part of any song)!

Song 3:

This is song is in D minor and its structure is: introduction, verse, pre chorus, chorus,
hook, verse, pre chorus, chorus, hook, breakdown and chorus. This structure is the way
most songs would be composed because all need to have a beginning, middle and end.
Like this song does. (The melodies reflect this structure)!

Song 4:

This song has a basic structure and it is: Introduction, a few main parts and the ending.
This is a good structure because it is easy to remember. Also it is not structured the way a
song would normally be structured. This means that the artist has missed out a few of the
main structure elements. This is not a bad thing because at least the melodies of this
song are well planned, simple and eective.
