Short Story: The Dog and His Shadow

Once there lived a dog. He was very greedy. There were many times that he had to
pay for his greed. Each time the dog promised himself, I have learnt my lesson. Now I
will never be greedy again. But he soon forgot his promises and was as greedy as ever.
One afternoon, the dog was terribly hungry. He decided to go look for something to
eat. Just outside his house, there was a bridge. I will go and look for food on the other
side of the bridge. The food there is definitely better, he thought to himself.
He walked across the wooden bridge and started sniffing around for food. Suddenly,
he spotted a bone lying at a distance. Ah, I am in luck. This looks a delicious bone, he
said.
Without wasting any time, the hungry dog picked up the bone and was just about to
eat it, when he thought, Somebody might see here with this bone and then I will have to
share it with them. So, I had better go home and eat it. Holding the bone in his mouth,
he ran towards his house.
While crossing the wooden bridge, the dog looked down into the river. There he saw
his own reflection. The foolish dog mistook it for another dog. There is another dog in
the water with bone in its mouth, he thought. Greedy, as he was, he thought, How nice
it would be to snatch that piece of bone as well. Then, I will have two bones.
So, the greedy dog looked at his reflection and growled. The reflection growled
back, too. This made the dog angry. He looked down at his reflection and barked, Woof!
Woof! As he opened his mouth, the bone in his mouth fell into the river. It was only
when the water splashed that the greedy dog realized that what he had seen was
nothing but his own reflections and not another dog. But it was too late. He had lost the
piece of bone because of his greed. Now he had to go hungry.

Poem: Within Four Walls

Within Four Walls
There are many rooms in a house,
Do you know what they are for?
Come and have a browse,
They are different behind every door.
A bathroom is where we go,
To have a bath or a shower,
We all sit in the living room,
To spend much time together.
Every house has a kitchen,
Where we keep food and cook,
There is a study in the grand house,
Where we can relax with a book.

By the kitchen, there's a dining room,

Where we gather around and eat,
The bedrooms are upstairs,
Where we take naps and sleep.

Reading Passage: Dolphin

Dolphin
Dolphins are marine mammals that are related to whales and porpoises. A
marine mammal is one that lives in the water. Dolphins are found all over the worlds
oceans as well as in rivers and marshes. Dolphins are carnivores (meat-eaters) and feed
on fish, squid and other marine life. They often swim together in groups called pods.
They are thought to have powerful eyesight and hearing, but do not have a sense of
smell.
Dolphins come in different sizes. Some are smaller than the average person, but
others, such as the Orca, can be 30 feet long, or more than five times as long as the

In 800 words, justify the choice of materials selected. Your justification

must be based on the principles of material selection and supported by
relevant literature.
For the selection of materials for task 1b, I had chosen a short story, a poem and a
reading passage. As we can see in Curriculum Standards in KSSR, there are three main
themes in English language lesson. There are World of Stories, World of Self, Family
and Friends and World of Knowledge. The theme that I chosen is World of Stories. For
the three materials that I had chosen, all the aspects had followed the guideline in the
Curriculum Standards in KSSR.
The first selected material is a short story which we all are familiar with, and it
entitled The dog and his Shadow. I think I had chosen the right text which suitable for
Year 2 students. According to Year 2 Daily Lesson Plan, it fits under the theme World of
Stories. The story is about a do
g had got a piece of meat and was carrying it home in his mouth
to eat it in peace. Now on his way home he had to cross a plank lying across a running
brook. As he crossed, he looked down and saw his own shadow reflected in the water
beneath. Thinking it was another dog with another piece of meat, he made up his mind
to have that also. So he made a snap at the shadow in the water, but as he opened his
mouth the piece of meat fell out, dropped into the water and was never seen more.
In pedagogical principles, the aspect of language level is one of the pedagogical
principles. The story should neither be too difficult nor too easy for them. Thus, we might
have to consider the short story that is more suitable for our students level of
proficiency. The language level of the song is suitable for Year 2 students as the
language is easy. We need to choose those songs which are sufficiently simple in terms
of grammar and vocabulary for our learners to be able to grasp what they are about. It
simply means that there should not be too many new items so that they are discouraged
and robbed of enjoyment as they learn.
Another one that we need to consider when selected the material is age
appropriateness. As we know, the story that has been selected must be appropriate with
the age of the students. This story is suitable with the students age. This is because this
song will match with the age and the maturity of the students. In their age, they will be
able to enjoy the story meanwhile they will know the moral value from this story.

The second material that I have chosen is a poem. The poem is about the rooms in
a house. There are kitchen, bathroom, dining room and bedroom. As we all know, each
of every room have their own functions as well. This poem can be taught under World of
Knowledge theme. This is due to the knowledge that can be found in the poem. The
poem describes the functions of the rooms. For example, the kitchen is used to cook the
food while bedroom is used when we are tired and want to take a nap. Every room has
their own functions and they are useful for us. We cannot live comfortably without one of
the rooms.
Through this poem, there are few aspects in pedagogical principles can be refer to
justify the selection of this material. One of them is readability of text as I had considered
the students level of proficiency in terms of word and sentence length. The most
important is it must not be too wordy. If too wordy, students will not understand the
content of the poem. They will feel bored too as they cannot understand the language.
The language and sentence patterns used in this poem are easy to understand.
Moreover, it is a very much straightforward poem that can be easily understood by the
students. The grammar and the sentence structures are quite easy to understand. It is
not like some poems which has the inner meaning which we need to try to understand
the meaning of the poem. The simple vocabulary in the text helps the students to
enhance their prior knowledge as they can refresh back what they had studied in the
early time. In this aspect, it helps to build a strong foundation of language skills among
the students.
Looking from the pedagogical aspect of in selecting material which is appropriable
for the selected learners the content is the most vital part which should be concentrated.
The vocabulary in the poem used is suitable for the children where the meaning is clear
as it would ease them to understand the underlying meaning of the poem. The children
is noticeable of the form of the poem and would be able to distinguish the difference
between different types of poem which will then lead them to extend and develop their
skills where they will be able to modify or create a new one based on the knowledge,
ability and interest.
In conclusion, this poem is the most suitable for the teaching activities that are
going to carry out. It is because this poem was not too easy to not too hard for them and
also follows the Year 2 English language curriculum. Pedagogical principles were the

first consideration when choosing this poem. So this poem was fulfill most of the
principles and that are all the reason that we choosing this poem to teach.
The third material I had chosen is reading passage. The theme is World of
Knowledge. The passage is about the dolphin. We need to know that dolphins are
marine mammals that are related to whales and porpoises. A marine mammal is one that
lives in the water. Dolphins are found all over the worlds oceans as well as in rivers and
marshes. Dolphins are carnivores (meat-eaters) and feed on fish, squid and other
marine life. They often swim together in groups called pods. They are thought to have
powerful eyesight and hearing, but do not have a sense of smell. Besides that, dolphins
come in different sizes. Some are smaller than the average person, but others, such as
the Orca, can be 30 feet long, or more than five times as long as the average person.
Dolphins are thought to be very intelligent and communicate with each other using clicks
and whistles. All dolphins are powerful swimmers.
This reading passage is suitable in teaching for Year 2 students. The reading
passage is not too hard for the students. This passage can also gain the pupils interest
to learn because this reading comprehension passage was very interesting and it lets
students gain knowledge on it. The content of the reading passage was about animals
which also one of the topic in the Year 2 English language curriculum. Apart from that,
this passage content also related to the animals. Students love animals very much.
Some of the students may not know and can teach them as the new vocabulary.
