Dear Professor Michael Damzen

Faculty of Natural Sciences, Department of Physics,

Imperial College London,
I hope this finds you well,
First of all, let me introduce myself. I am Kristia Ningsih from Indonesia. I have graduated from
Universitas Airlangga in Physics major. Currently, I am a Physics Teacher in IPH Schools and
Research Assistant in Airlangga University, East Java, Indonesia.
I have great interest in organic optics and photonics. While doing research at the bachelor level, I
explored the use of the micro displacement sensor system using optical fiber bundle 16 receivers
based on intensity modulated from He-Ne laser to produce the 3D images. The output of this
system facilitates medical personnel to measure the cavity of dental which provides innovation in
the field of medical technology that are highly accurate, non-invasive, more economical, as well
as long-lasting usage. I continued focusing on fiber optic and imaging to diagnose the roughness
of tooth surface and the changes in the intensity of tooth enamel.
However, the masters program for this topic is still not available in Indonesia. Thus, I have
chosen Photonics as the main subject of my masters program in Imperial College London which
is one of the largest research centres for optics-based research and application in the UK.
I had read your profile. You have conducted extensive research in laser technology, applied
optics, biomedical imaging, biophotonics and industrial photonics applications. I also had read
your articles about the usage of Er:YSGG laser crystal, Alexandrite laser and Nd:YVO 4 laser
which interest me to do research in biophotonics field using these lasers.
I hope you do not mind my getting in touch, but I would like to inquire whether you are currently
accepting International graduate students. I have explored Photonics, Southampton website in
detail, and it seems like an excellent fit for me because there are many research themes,
especially for laser technology, biophotonics and photonics applications. It has good facilities for
supporting to study. In addition, I had read that you leads a programme on the development of
wavelength tunable laser technology for space and airborne remote sensing, so I would be very
happy if I am able to do research under your supervision. I think studying at photonics can
enhance my solid skill and art of research for my research future. Nowadays, I am a scholarship
holder of LPDP scholarship from my country and I hope I can pursue my study in Southampton
I know you are very busy, so I appreciate any time you can give me. I look forward to hear from
you at your earliest convenience. Please find my CV attached. Thank you in advance for your
time.
Sincerely yours,

Kristia Ningsih, BSc
