My fellow anglers and friends,

Greetings to all. I hope all of you are having lots of fun
fishing time. We have been busy as usual of which is good,
and decided to add crazy into the mix as well. We decided
to embark on a journey of urban fishing.
That does not sound crazy. It sounds like a bunch of optimistic angler folks
hoping to catch something within the urban environment. Well, we decided
to use a jigging rod. Haha, now that sounds crazy doesnt it? We did just that
using the Abu Garcia SaltyStage Jiggernaut and it worked great. Ill not spoil
your read. Do check it out inside.
Also, after embarking on a travel magazine and travelling about the country I
realized just how wonderful Malaysia is for anglers. We have everything from
big lakes, to big game saltwater fishing. Our fish stocks may not be as good
and they have also become smarter (something that I observed in Belum)
which means that we now have to think outside the box and change the way
we fish. Do give this some thought.

Malaysia Your Fishing

Destination
alaysia has great beaches, lovely island paradises, good shopping places, wild natural jungles,
etc. Visiting these places are what many visitors
to this beautiful country do. One other activity that
is not part of that norm but is slowly picking up in
Malaysia is fishing. Malaysia is a good fishing destination.
Fishing The Great Lakes
There are a few great lakes in Malaysia. Some of

these great lakes such Temenggor Lake, Royal
Belum, Kenyir Lake, etc. attract lots of anglers
both hardcore as well as weekend warriors, or
the once in a blue moon anglers.

Of Predators & Monsters
Fishing these lakes are both challenging and rewarding. Fishing is not easy but one could battle
monsters depending on ones skills and luck. There
are the brown snakeheads, hard fighting giant
snakeheads, giant featherbacks, arowanas, fierce
Hampala barbs, various types of catfish species,
and more lurking in these waters.
Fishing The Jungle Rivers
The jungles of Malaysia are dense and is home to

a lot of wild life including tigers, elephants, boars,
bears, deer, snakes, birds, etc. The jungle rivers
are habitats for powerful fishes such as the illusive red mahseer also known as the red torpedo,
green or silver mahseers that are torpedoes in
their own right, hampala barbs, the hard fighting
monkey eating Wallago attu, etc.

Fishing these rivers will require that you spend a

few days in the jungle. There will be jungle trekking,
boating, canoeing, camping, and at some places,
four wheel driving. One has to be reasonably fit to
very fit to partake in these adventures; depending
on the area chosen.
Sea Fishing
The sailfish capital of Asia is situated on the east

coast of Peninsular Malaysia in a place called
Rompin. They congregate there because of the
abundance of baitfish. These majestic speedsters
of the sea can often be seen roaming about flashing their dorsal fins also known as the sail, on the
waters surface.

Big Game Perhaps
Every year the sailfishes of Rompin attract hundreds of anglers from many countries to this little
coastal town for a workout on the seas. Apart from
sailfish, there are black marlins in the area but they
are seldom caught.
We recommend catch and release for all billfish
caught.
Other Saltwater Warriors
The seas surrounding Malaysia are also home to

mackerels, wahoo, yellow fin tuna, various species of trevallies, dorado, cobia, various species
of groupers including giant grouper, various types
of snappers, barramundi, barracudas, various
threadfin species, etc. These fighters are found
in many parts of the countrys coastal waters at
both East and West Malaysia.

There Are Sharks Too
There are also various type of sharks including

whale sharks, as well as rays, whales, dolphins,
etc. that roam these waters but are not targeted
sport fishes. When it comes to sharks, there are
quite a few species from dangerous ones such as
bull sharks to the less dangerous ones like the lizard sharks in these waters, but to date there have
been only three attacks since 1968 and non were
fatal. We recommend that all sharks caught to be
released.
Commercial Fishing Ponds
For the less adventurous or perhaps for those who

only have a few hours to fish, a visit to the commercial fishing ponds also known as pay ponds
can be fun. There are plenty of them around and
they can be found in almost every part of the
country.

Not As Easy As It Sounds
Most of these ponds are regularly stocked. Some

are even stocked on a daily basis. That said, fishing these ponds can prove to be a challenge. Fishing skills come into play. Local knowledge is a big
help. Luck plays a part. But every pond has a secret that are guarded by those who frequent them.
Some Famous Ones
Some of the famous commercial fishing ponds include the Natural Exotic Fishing Pond in Rawang
Selangor; a place I test out fishing tackle, Bedong Fishing Pond (Kedah, north of the Malaysian Peninsular), Damai Fishing Village(Johor,
south of the Malaysian Peninsular), Fish Valley
(Selangor), Jurassic SW Pond (Sepang, Selangor), Hulu Langat Fishing Pond (Selangor), etc.

Fishing Guides
Fishing guide services are available in Malaysia

for all sorts of fishing therefore one does not have
to worry. Even if youve not planned for a fishing
trip in Malaysia and did not bring any fishing tackle
with you but would like to do some fishing (ad hoc),
this can still be arranged. Most fishing guides provide fishing tackle. Most pay ponds provide them
too on rental basis.

Summary
If you are an angler looking for a place to go fishing, do consider Malaysia. Fishing in Malaysia
can be good. However, like fishing in any country, it is best to check in advance what the fishing
seasons are.

ome time ago we shove the Abu Garcia Salty

Stage jiggernaut into the ring with the Amazonian redtail catfish and it survived the fight shaken
but alive. Being a light action rod Its slower action
blank took some massive beating and gave some
back. It was a lot of fun; harrowing fun.

More recently we took it (baitcasting model) to

Pulau Jarak (Jarak Island) to see how it would do
against the fishes there. It did well battling golden
snappers despite being its thin and light self. The
fight was not easy but at the end the Jiggernaut
prevailed.

Going Quite Mad
With such a blank we wanted to know how it

would fair casting light baits since it is a light
jigging rod. With that in mind we decide to do
some finesse fishing casting out light 1 inch softbaits on jighead. Well, maybe we have gone a
bit mad. Perhaps but why not?
Field Test
Light action rods with soft action tips makes casting light baits fun. Their ability to flick out these
light baits make them superb finesse rods. But
what about the Jiggernaut of which is a light jigging rod and not exactly a finesse rod?

With that in mind we took some softbaits, jigheads, and the Jiggernaut to a stream to do
some softbait fishing. We used Berkley Powerbait 1 inch grubs, my favourite for this sort
of fishing, and the Owner Ultra Head jigheads.
Both combined gave a total weight of 3 grams.
Casting Abilities
Casting out the Berkley Powerbait grub was easy.

Every cast gave good distances and with a good
distance between the angler and where the bait
dropped means further coverage and cranking
distance. Fishing in a high pressured area such
as the one we fished in, having good distances
makes a difference.

The slower action of the Jiggernaut made playing brown snakeheads fun. It certainly has more
than enough backbone to bring up the fish but
when the fish makes a little dash, the rod bends
and the pull of the fish is felt as it tries to make
a run for cover. It really is fun playing with the
fishes that way before bringing them up for photos and then releasing them back to fight another day.
Verdict
Yes, the Abu Garcia Salty Stage Jiggernaut can

play the part in finesse fishing too. It is light
enough to cast light weights and has proven
to be a versatile rod. A realm into a world of finesse jigging may be upon us.

ith soft baits being one of my favourite ways

of fishing, jigheads are a norm in my tackle boxes.
There are many brands available in the market and
one of them is Owner. Owner has long made jigheads. They also make them for other brands. Thus
this time I decided to test owners own jigheads.
Sharpness Test
Running the Owner Ultra Head jigheads hooks on

the surface of a plastic spoon to see if it will catch
on. Sharp hooks will catch on and even hold on
under steady hands. The Ultra Head caught onto
the surface of the spoon too. We test all from the
pack and they proved to be sharp.

Saltwater Test
Like all the hooks that weve tested, we put the

Ultra Head to the saltwater test too. We always
say that we are trying to get them to rust but in
reality all we want to know is how well they can
manage corrosion. With that in mind we drowned
the Ultra Head in saltwater for 24 hours (more).
After
Lab Test
24
After 24 hours we removed the Ultra Head from

the saltwater solution and inspected it for signs
of rust. We didnt see any. Next is to run the
hook through the surface of the plastic spoon to
see if it is still sharp. Yes, it remains sharp.

Field Test
It has done well thus far. Next we took it to a stream

and attached a Berkley Powerbait Grub softbait and
started to cast with the hopes of catching a fish. In
a short time a snakehead decided to take the bait.
With a like strike the hook was set and the fish
made its way up the banks for a photo session.
Verdict
The Owner Ultra Head jigheads are super sharp

and they resist corrosion well. They certainly are good quality jigheads and good quality
hooks. I certainly will not expect anything less
from Owner. Price wise let us put it this way;
it matches the quality and is certainly reasonable.

Decoy Rocket Plus SV-69
he Decoy jigheads are really impressive and

for light or finesse fishing, one of the jigheads
available is the Decoy Rocket Plus SV-69 jighead. It looks different than other jigheads as it
comes with a cylindrical head and a blob on the
hook that helps hold the soft bait in place.
Sharpness Test
Running the hook point on a plastic spoon is one of

the ways that we use to test the sharpness of hooks.
The other way is to run in on our thumbnail. Using
the plastic spoon method as the surface is harder
and smoother; we tested the Rocket Plus and it easily latched on to the surface of the spoon. This means
that the hook is sharp.

Corrosion Test
Next we drowned the Rocket Plus into a solution

of saltwater for 24 hours. This is done to test if it
will corrode or rust within a 24 hours time frame.
Of course we do not leave our jigheads in the
water for 24 hours when we fish unless they got
snagged. So, if it survives, you know it will be
able to last throughout your fishing trip.
After 24 Hours
After over the 24 hours period we removed the Rocket Plus from the saltwater solution and inspected it
for rust. No rust was detected. Next we ran it through
the sharpness test to see if it has gotten blunt. The
Rocket Plus latched on to the plastic spoon again. It
remains sharp.

Verdict
Good quality modern hooks these days can easily

handle saltwater well and such is the Rocket Plus. It
remained sharp and in good condition despite staying in saltwater for over 24 hours. Good jigheads indeed.

Revo SX
The Revo SX comes in striking metallic dark red and

black rotor, spool, and a black + gun metal chromed
body. Its handle is aluminium bent is a nice way.
Overall the design of the Revo SX is nice and sinister. I do like nice and sinister.
The Revo SX spinning reel incorporates a moulded

IM-C6 carbon body to a one piece aluminium gearbox giving it a rigid body while keeping its weight low.
In fact, this new Revo SX is lighter than the previous
ones. This also feels and looks a lot better.

Revo STX
The Revo STX to me starts looking a little bit mundane to me. It looks a little too grown up. It is like
a crowd of Lotus Elise, Mazda RX7, BMW Z5, and
suddenly a Mercedes Benz E class Coupe. Anyway,
it is not a bad looker. It does look really good, in the
grown up section.

The Revo Premier is to me the best looking reel

amongst the latest Revo spinning reel series. It come
with a black spool lines with gold, a silver rotor and
chrome rotor with carbon fibre inserts, and its body

Revo MGX
The MGX conjures up an image of the dark knight or

perhaps Darth Vader is youre more into sci-fi and
less into super heroes. Perhaps the two will have

Straight Retrieve
Part 6
ne of the most basic techniques that I highly

recommend to beginner lure casters is the straight
retrieve technique of which is easy to execute and
is effective at catching Fish.
Lure Types
The straight retrieve technique can be used with

many types of lures from sinking, diving, to top water or surface lures. They can be minnow or shad
(Fish designed types) to other designs such as
cicadas as well as other more uniquely designed
lures.

The Start
Before casting always ensure that your lure is swimming right. For detailed description please refer to
earlier months issue (Basics of Lure Casting Part
4). After you tested your lure cast it out right in
front of you. Once the lure hits the water, allow it
to sink (if sinking lure). Floating lures will stay in
place but a float.
Lure Retrieve
The retrieve is easy. Point your rod tip at the water

and retrieve the lure back to you in a straight line all
the way back to you. Then cast and retrieve again.
For the first few cast, pay attention to the lure. Feel
its vibrations and see how it moves (action) as it
comes swimming back to you.

Vary The Speed
Next is to retrieve your lure back at different speeds.

Slow down the retrieval speed and feel the vibrations and again see how it acts as it makes its way
back to you. Next increase the speed of retrieval
and again feel the vibrations and see how it acts.
Constant Speed
Try to retrieve your lure, cranking at a constant speed

especially fish type lures. You may be cranking at
fast, medium, or slow speeds but keep it constant.
Many a times a fish going for the lure may suddenly stop and turn back should the lure suddenly
slows down or stops. This depends on the targeted
species. Sebaraus (Hampala barb) for example are
one of those fishes that would turn back.

When To Stop
Cranking
Some the lure allows you to feel the terrain especially deep diving lures. Like when your lure hits
something hard, or when it is digging about a sandy bottom, you will be able to feel these signals
especially if you are using supervises with a higher
carbon rod blank that transmits vibrations well.
When you hit something hard you may want to pause

for a while just in case your lure hits a tree stump
and may get snagged. In cases of such, pause for
a while and give the line a slow and gentle pull using the rod. If the lure is not snagged, continue with
your retrieve. If it has snagged, a lure retriever will
come in handy.

Things To Note
There are lures that work best at a certain speed.

It is best to know your lures well. Also note the
speed differences of your reel. High speed reels
will crank your lure back at a faster speed. Faster
speed also means a change in lure action.
Slow speed reels will have your lure swimming slower should you be cranking the reel using the same
cranking speed of action high speed reel, meaning
the speed of which you are turning the handle.

ne of the hooks used when fishing with soft

plastics or soft baits are jigheads. Soft plastics
alones are pretty light (unless larger ones) and jigheads give them weight. The weight helps with the
cast as well as with the manipulation of the soft
plastic in the water or on top of vegetation.

The head of the jighead lies the weight. It can be

made of lead or stainless steel. Some countries
have ban on lead and thus only stainless steel jigheads are allowed to be used. This weight or head
helps with casting and manipulation of the soft plastic.

The jighead comes in a variety of designs, weights,

and colours; depending on what you choose to
use. Some of them are round, some are cylindrical, some are conical, some are designed to look
like the head of a fish, etc. Colours add to the attractiveness of the entire rig.

Some jigheads come with bait holders / anchors

(different brands call them different thigns) that help
to hold the soft plastic bait in place. Without these
parts as with earlier jighead models, the soft baits
tend to slide out of shape after a cast or two and
will frequently have to be readjusted. These parts
eliminate the need for constant readjustments.

S ome lures come, some lures go. This here is
part 2 of the Salmo Hornet story. For part 1, you do

Action
All Hornets are hand tuned featuring an extremely

tight side to side action coupled with the occasional erratic roll, unlike regular wooden crank shads
that gives plenty of side to side wiggle. Even on super slow retrieval, the tremendous amount of vibration from the Hornet can most certainly be felt and
transported to your hand, regardless of the gear
(spinning or baitcasting) and line weight.

This lure dives gradually to its rated diving depth

in a smooth steady gradient. Additionally, the Hornet does not skew sideways easily despite being
cranked at very high speeds, making them unbelievably versatile. This gains them acceptance from
both beginners and seasoned pros, straight out of
the box. Fishes will definitely feel the Hornet with
their lateral line even if the regular Hornets are nonrattlers and in murky waters due to the amount of
action it creates.
In my opinion, the Hornets are more suited for casting into fish holding areas and structures as compared to a search lure, to cover a wide body of
clear water. The Hornet may not be a champ in distance casting department, but it is a lure that is as
reliable in close quarter combat.

Casting a Hornet lure long distances may wear you

out quickly no thanks to its immense action during the crank back through unproductive waters,
and such actions makes much more sense in fish
holding areas even if it is highly pressured, where
fishes are likely to be seduced by the vibration of
the Hornet instead of just swim actions.
The ability of the Hornet to go fast or slow without

losing its action also plays a part to tempt wary fish
to investigate the lure. Besides that the changing
of lure to match different retrieval speeds will no
longer be a necessity, thus saving lots of precious
fish catching time.

Application
Personally, I prefer to work the Salmo Hornet on

straight retrieves, manipulating only the speed of
retrieval. Jerking the Hornet is also fine but the
lure movement is already erratic enough on its own.
Adding more jerking motion just adds extra load
on your wrist. You may not want to tire yourself up
quickly especially during long trips!
The Salmo Hornet is a no brainer lure, at least to me.

It is a simple lure to use. The floating version has a
high buoyancy rate. One other unique thing about
the floating version is that it floats backwards and
away unlike most floating lures that just float up towards the surface. This characteristic coupled with
the good snag deflection ability of the lure makes
the Salmo Hornet a great lure to work in heavily
snagged areas.

Areas such as wooden log and log piles commonly

associated with large rivers as well as reservoirs,
and river with large boulders or rocks are not a problem for the Hornet. It also does surprisingly well in
pay ponds with plenty of rocks, wooden stilts, and
even PVC pipes at the bottom as well as the sides
due to its snag deflection properties.
That said, the Hornets are not recommended for

areas filled with weeds, the bib of the Hornet while
good at avoiding hard structures, tend to drag up
weeds or debris due to its bib. Although the lure
would not be stuck under such circumstances, but
it is pointless to waste time cleaning up the pond
with your lure on every cast.

How I started fishing?
n this article I will write about how I started fishing.

Fishing can seem like a boring and crazy thing to do,
but once you get into it its a beautiful world. Fishing can be an escape and therapy for some, and for
youth it can be a barrier from various social problems.

I began fishing around 2001 when I was 3 years old.
At the time, my dad was studying in the University of
Missouri. After class, he would take me bass fishing
at some local ponds. My first catch was a largemouth
bass on a soft plastic and a Berkley Kids fishing kit
with 6lb Trilene. For a 3 year old, the fight was intense
and it has kept me hooked until this day.

In 2003, my family moved back to Malaysia. In primary school I did not fish much. Whenever I fished
I fished with bait like worms and bread. When I was
11, my preference shifted from bait fishing back to
lure fishing. Up until now I still cant get away from
lure fishing. It feels amazing to be able to fool fish
with artificial lures.
I fish because it makes me happy. It is an escape from problems I have. On the water, I lose
track of time and I can relax. Catching a fish
brings joy like opening a present. When I feel
stressed I go fishing to clear up my mind. This
helps boost my productivity as I can maintain
positive thoughts in what I do.

My advice to anyone deciding to try out fishing is to

find someone who fishes and learn from them. Go
out there and have fun, dont pressure yourself too
much on catching a fish.
In the beginning, not catching anything can be disappointing but in time you will be used to it. Lowering
your expectations as you begin will bring you great results. Dont forget to catch and release too its crucial to keep the sport alive.
