Instruction Manual
1.4 General Description and Operating Principle
1.4.1

General Description

The purpose of the Desorber is to remove water from oil systems where the normal mechanical means of
water removal, i.e., settling or coalescing, are unable to perform. This inability is typically caused by a
system lay-out where settling is impossible, or by the use of highly hygroscopic or emulsifying oils.
The Desorber removes the water by means of evaporation, utilizing the fact that warm air is able to
contain more water vapour than cold air: Cool, dry air is blown through warm oil, thereby being saturated
with vapour as its temperature rises, and the water is consequently removed from the oil.
The Desorber is schematically illustrated on the previous page and comprises the following main
components:

1.4.2

Supply pump
Desorbing chamber with air distributor and heating element.
Discharge pump.
Heat exchanger.
Air blower.
Air cooled condenser with fan.
Cyclone.
Control panel.
Instruments and control switches.
Working principle

The supply pump draws the oil from the contaminated system and pumps it through the heat exchanger
to the desorbing chamber, where the oil is heated to final process temperature by the electric heating
element. The heat exchanger serves as an energy saver as the incoming oil is heated by the processed
outgoing oil.
In the desorbing chamber the oil flows downwards, meeting the upstreaming air from the air distributor in
a counter-flow, and it exits the chamber through the discharge pumps suction line.
The air / oil / water mixture passes a number of deflector plates and a demister on its way up through the
chamber, thereby expelling the oil particles before entering the condenser via the air outlet.
In the condenser the saturated air is cooled to a temperature below its dew point, thereby expelling the
vapour as water droplets, which are then separated from the air stream in the cyclone. From the cyclone
the water drains to a water outlet from where it can be collected.
The air exits the cyclone and is drawn into the blower where the heat of the compression lowers the
relative humidity of the air, meaning that it is again ready to absorb water from the oil in the desorbing
chamber.
The discharge pump presses the oil through the heat ex-changer to the oil outlet through which it returns
to the oil system.

INSTALLATION OF CJCTM DESORBER UNIT

Please see installation drawing (53 011 21-4) and assembly drawings (44 003 14-4 / 44 003 154) for reference.

3.1 Stationary Units

3.1.1 Mechanical requirements:
Oil in- and outlets are equipped with 22 mm cutting ring type pipe fittings for external connection.
The external piping must be supported and stress-free in order not to damage supply pump and heat
exchanger, and the length of the suction line must not exceed the following values:
ISO 150 oil / 20C tank temperature = Max. 6 metres.
ISO 150 oil / 40C tank temperature = Max. 20 metres.
ISO 220 oil / 20C tank temperature = Max. 4 metres.
ISO 220 oil / 40C tank temperature = Max. 15 metres.
Use pipes with larger inner diameter if the Desorber cannot be installed within these limits, or contact
C.C. Jensen for further information.
The water drain outlet should preferably be able to discharge freely into a drip pan or similar, but a drain
hose of 1-2 metres is allowed.

CAUTION
Do not under any circumstances connect the water drain outlet to a pipe installation
where back-pressure might arise as this will jeopardize the correct function of the
Desorber.
Make sure that service and maintenance areas, as indicated on the installation drawing (53 011 21-4),
are available.
Electrical requirements:
Connect the Desorber according to the electric circuit diagram in chapter 9.1 of this manual. Observe
local rules and regulations.

Instruction Manual

NORMAL OPERATING AND DRAINAGE

5.1 Normal Operation

During normal operation after the filling sequence, the supply and discharge pumps will run continuously;
the latter at a variable speed controlled by the EPR (Electronical Programmable Relay) and frequency
inverter according to the fluid level in the desorbing chamber.
The temperature control thermostat is factory preset for a process oil temperature of 70C, and will switch
on and off the electric heating element in order to maintain this temperature.
The water extracted by the Desorber will ALWAYS, to an extent, be contaminated with oil. The ratio
depends, among other things, on the initial content of water and the hygroscopic properties of the oil.

CAUTION
It is therefore strictly prohibited to dispose of the water through normal sanitation
drains or sewers !!
Observe local rules and regulations regarding chemical waste !!

5.2 Drainage
The Desorber has an automatic draining sequence mode intended to be used when the unit has to be
moved to another location or when another oil type is to be treated. The draining sequence is fully
automatic, and the unit can therefore be left unattended during draining.
The discharge pump will drain the unit at high speed until its empty. EPR regulate the speed by means of
high level sensor and low level sensor, and is controlled by means of a 3-valve solenoid valve. The

CONTROL AND ALARM SYSTEM

6.1 Control system

The Desorber is EPR-controlled and works automatically in both operating modes: RUN and DRAIN. The
speeds of the supply pump, blower and cooling fan are constant, whereas the speed of the discharge
pump is varied by means of the frequency inverter integrated in the control box.
Speed setting, heat enabling and pump action is controlled by the EPR through inputs from the level
switches on the desorbing chamber and the temperature control thermostat.
Furthermore, additional safety against overheating is secured through the manual reset type temperature
switch, and the system is protected against excessive pressure by the built-on pressure switch.

6.2 Alarm system

The Desorber is equipped with an alarm and shut-down system monitoring the following malfuntions:

High oil level

High temperature cut-out
Motor overload cut-out

The shut-down system will stop either the supply pump or the whole desorbing process depending on the
nature of the alarm. When an alarm is raised, the common alarm will lit.
After a high level alarm occurs the unit automatically starts to drain the chamber, if the alarm is reset, the
unit go back to normal running.
After shut-down, desorbing cannot be resumed before the fault has been corrected and the indication
lamp is extin-guished through an additional activation of the reset button.
The Desorber is equipped with a Normally Closed alarm output for remote indication purpose.

Start-up and maintenance of Switchboards

delivered by Titech Electric A/S
Before start-up.
1. Visual inspection. Make sure that the switchboard has not been damaged during the transport.
2. All screw terminals on components in the switchboard should be retightened.
3. Visual inspection. Make sure that all wires are connected properly in the terminal strip.
4. Adjust all thermal overload relays, circuit breakers, measuring instruments.
(All scales are set to lowest value.)

Maintenance instructions.
By preventive maintenance of switchboards, which should be done at least once a year, the
checkpoints below could be a guidance.
1. Visual inspection. Check that the switchboard is intact.
2. Cleaning of switchboard/plant. Ventilating apertures should be cleaned for dust and mud,
change or vacuum clean filter if necessary.
3. All screw terminals on components and bus-bar connections should be retightened.
4. Actuate all switches. This is very important and should be done frequently.
5. Make a thermo-graphic check of important contact spots on components and bus-bar
connections
6. Check switch components for operation time and exchange if any have exceeded maximum
operating time.
7. High voltage- and insulation-test. Remember to switch off all electronics, control circuits and
outgoing power circuits.
8. Test alarm- and control functions.
9. If the switchboard had been exposed to extreme condition (such as damage by fire or water,
lightning or high short-circuit current), it ought to be inspected and checked according to the
above checkpoints. Defect components should be changed.

The modular terminal block system

CLIPLINE complete

System features | Fast connection

Material properties

Connection principle

The patented contact metals of the

QT fast connection terminal blocks consist
of a special, high-grade copper alloy. This
combines good electrical conductivity with
excellent elastic characteristics.
The surface of the metal parts is
protected by a lead-free, galvanic nickel or
tin plating.
The insulating housings of the fast
connection terminal blocks are made of
recyclable PA 6.6. This elastic plastic with
high impact strength is halogen-free and
UV-resistant. Further characteristics are
the good tropical and termite resistance,
high chemical resistance and the excellent
aging characteristics. Polyamide 6.6 can
be used with operating temperatures of
up to 130 C and is certified for the
inflammability class V0 in accordance with
UL 94.

QUICKON modular terminal blocks

are designed for fast conductor
connection. Stripping and fitting splicing
protection are no longer necessary; the
conductors only have to be cut to the
correct length and can then be contacted
within seconds.
An important characteristic is the
space-saving displacement connection.
Due to the simplicity of the connection,
the wiring time is reduced by up to 60%.
During operation with a standard
screwdriver, the switching states are
clearly signaled by engagement points at
the start and end position.
Solid and stranded conductors of 0.25
to 2.5 mm2 can be wired without aids such
as guide ferrules.
When a conductor is connected, the
conductor insulation is cut open, displaced
and the conductor is securely engaged
in the end position where it makes
large-area, gas-tight contact.
The high quality of the QUICKON fast
connection is verified by the fact that this
connection is certified in accordance with
the standard for Ex e applications, as are
the screw and spring-cage connections.

The following seven steps describe the recommended minimum operations

to allow the J7 to control a connected motor in typical configuration, to allow
simple operation in the quickest time:
Step 1 initial checks
1-1 Checkpoints before connecting the power supply.
Check that the power supply is as of the correct voltage.
CIMR-J7AZ2@@@: Three phase 200 to 230VAC
CIMR-J7AZB@@@: Single phase 200 to 240VAC (Wire R/L1 and S/L2)
CIMR-J7AZ4@@@: Three phase 380 to 460VAC
1-2 Make sure that the motor output terminals (U/T1, V/T2, W/T3) are connected to the motor.
1-3 Ensure that the control circuit terminals and the control device are wired correctly.
1-4 Make sure that all control terminals are turned off.
1-5 Set the motor to no-load status (i.e. not connected to the mechanical system)

Step 2 Connecting the power supply and check the display status
2-1 After conducting the checks in step-1, connect the power supply.
2-2 If the display is normal when the power is connected it will read as follows;

RUN indicator: flashes

ALARM indicator: off
Setting/monitor indicators: FREF, FOUT or IOUT is lit.
Data display: displays the corresponding data for the indicator that is lit.
When fault has occurred, the details of the fault will be displayed. In that case, refer to users
manual and take necessary action.

Step 3 Initializing parameters

To initialize the drive parameters to factory defaults, set parameter n01 = 8. This will set the J7 to
accept start/stop commands in what in termed 2-wire control, i.e. 1 wire for a motor forward/stop
command, and 1 wire for a motor reverse/stop command.

Read the rated frequency (in Hz) on the motor nameplate, and enter this into parameters n09 and n11.

Step 6 Set the operation command

This is the method for motor run and stop commands (i.e. how the inverter will start and stop the
motor). The two basic operations are for the RUN and STOP/RESET keys on the Digital Operator, or
for one of multi-function inputs through the control circuit terminals.
To set the operation command, enter the appropriate value into parameter n02:
0 = RUN and STOP/RESET keys on the Digital Operator are enabled.
1 = Multi-function inputs through the control circuit terminals.
The diagram to the below shows how to connect a switch to start/stop the motor in the forward direction in 2-wire control. Set parameter n02=1. To enable a separate switch for reverse rotation on control terminal S2, set parameter n36=2 (this is actually the factory default setting for n36).

FWD RUN/STOP
REV RUN/STOP

Step 7 Set the frequency reference

This is the method for selecting the source for the motor speed command. The factory default is for the
potentiometer on the digital Operator (FREF adjuster), in which case no setting is required.
Frequency reference can also come from an external potentiometer, an analog output from a PLC, or
up to 8 pre-programmed speeds held in the inverter and selected via the multi-function inputs.
For example, to accept frequency reference from an external potentiometer, or a 0-10V analog out
from a PLC, set parameter n03=2.

Counting Speed of the 8-digit Counter

The maximum counting speed of the 8-digit counter is 150 Hz. When the ladder program volume is large, however, this speed will be less than 150
Hz. Calculate the cycle time and confirm the maximum counting speed using the following formula. The calculation serves as a guide only, so allow
a suitable margin in the actual machine.
Maximum counting speed = 1,000,000 Hz/ Cycle time (s) 2.2 Hz
Note: Even if the calculated maximum counting speed exceeds 150 Hz using this formula, the maximum counting speed will be 150 Hz.

Precautions when Switching from Previous Units

Previous models of Expansion I/O Units cannot be connected to V2 CPU Units.

ZEN-8E1@R Expansion I/O Units with relay outputs need to be connected to a power supply.
A ZEN-@C@D@-D-V2 CPU Unit with DC power supply cannot be connected to an Expansion I/O Unit with AC inputs.
When connecting Expansion I/O Units with DC inputs to a CPU Unit with an AC power supply, the burst noise immunity will be 1 kV (IEC 610004-4).
There is no change to the 8 A per contact for relay output, but the total output for all contacts must be as follows:
Units with 10 I/O Points: 20 A max. (15 A max. for Communications-type CPU Units)
Units with 20 I/O Points: 40 A max.
Expansion I/O Units:
20 A max.
Always use the ZEN-SOFT01-V4 Support Software for V2 CPU Units.
Input wiring for CPU Units with DC power supplies differs from that for Pre-V1 CPU Units. Refer to the following diagrams.

Precautions
System Startup and Program Changes

!WARNING
Serious human hazard may occasionally occur due to ignition or
rupture of the lithium battery used in the Battery Unit. Do not short the
battery terminals or charge, disassemble, deform under pressure, or
incinerate the battery.
Never use any battery that has been dropped on the floor or otherwise
subjected to excessive shock.

!CAUTION

Using the button switches.

Electric shock, fire, or malfunction may occur. Do not disassemble,

modify, or repair the ZEN or touch any of the internal parts.
Electric shock may occur. Never touch the I/O terminals, computer
connector, or Battery Unit connector while power is being supplied.
Electric shock may occur. Do not remove the Expansion Unit
connector cover unless an Expansion I/O Unit will be permanently
installed.
Fire may occasionally occur. Tighten the terminal screws to a torque
of 0.565 to 0.6 Nm (5 to 5.3 in-lb).

Precautions for Safe Use

Please observe the following precautions for safe use of this product.

Circuit Design
All interface connectors and battery connectors are live parts. They
may not be directly connected to a Safety Extra Low Voltage
(SELV) circuit or to accessible conductive parts.
For programming units and personal computers use only the
connecting cable ZEN-CIF01 (optional accessory) manufactured by
OMRON.
ZEN-CIF01 provides safe (reinforced) insulation between personal
computers and ZEN.
Provide emergency stop circuits, external interlock circuits, limit
circuits, and other safety circuits in addition to any provided within
the ZEN control circuits to ensure safety of the overall system in the
event of ZEN failure or external factors.
If the ZEN discovers an error during self-diagnosis, operation will
be stopped and all outputs will be turned OFF. As a
countermeasure for such problems, external safety measures must
be provided to ensure safety in the overall system.
Outputs from the ZEN may remain ON or OFF due to faults in
internal circuits such as output relay fusing or burning, or output
transistor destruction. As a countermeasure for such problems,
external safety measures must be provided to ensure safety in the
overall system.
Fail-safe measures must be taken by the user to ensure overall
system safety in the event of broken signal lines or momentary
power interruptions.
The durability of the output relays is largely affected by the
switching conditions. Confirm the operation of the system under
actual operating conditions and set the switching frequency to
ensure that adequate performance will be provided. Insulation
faults and burning in the ZEN may result if relays are used after
their performance has deteriorated.

Connecting Expansion I/O Units

Supply power to both the CPU Unit and Expansion I/O Units from
the same power supply and turn them ON and OFF at the same
time.
When connecting Expansion I/O Units with DC inputs to a CPU
Unit with an AC power supply, the burst noise immunity will be 1 kV
(IEC 61000-4-4).
Expansion I/O Units with AC inputs (ZEN-8E1AR) cannot be
connected to a CPU Unit with a DC power supply.

34

Programmable Relay ZEN

Check the user program for proper execution before actually

running it on the Unit.
Disconnect the output lines from the system before testing
operation in any system in which incorrect operation can result in
injury or equipment damage.
Confirm safety before attempting any of the following operations.
Changing the operating mode (RUN/STOP).

V2 Units

Changing bit status or parameter settings.

Double-check all wiring before turning ON the power supply.
Refer to Cycle Time Calculation Method on page 21 and confirm
that the increase in the cycle time will not affect operation. If the
cycle time is too long, it may become impossible to read input
signals accurately. The increase in the cycle time will be particularly
noticeable when set values are written in RUN mode for a CPU Unit
with communications (ZEN-10C4@R-@-V2).

Installation and Wiring

Do not allow the ZEN to fall during installation.
Be sure that the DIN Track mounting levers, Memory Cassettes,
Battery Units, cable connectors, and other items with locking
devices are properly locked into place. Improper locking may result
in malfunction.
For surface mounting, tighten mounting screws to the following
torque.
CPU Units: 1.03 Nm max.
Expansion I/O Units: 0.46 Nm max.
Use wires with cross-sectional areas of 0.2 to 2.5 mm2 (equivalent
to AWG24 to AWG14) for wiring and strip them for 6.5 mm.

Handling
The environment of use for the ZEN is "Pollution degree 2" and
"Overvoltage category II" specified in IEC60664-1.
Always use the ZEN within the rated ambient operating
temperature and humidity. The rated ambient operating
temperature is 0 to 55C (25 to 55C for LED-type CPU Units).
If the ZEN is used near sources of heat, such as a power supply,
the internal temperature of the ZEN may increase, lowering the
durability of the ZEN.
Discharge static electricity from your body, e.g., by touching a
grounded metal plate, before touching any Unit.
The exterior of the Units will be damaged if it comes into contact
with organic solvents (e.g., benzene or paint thinner), strong
alkalies, or strong acids. Never allow such substances to come into
contact with the Units.
Do not apply voltages exceeding the rated voltages. Internal
elements may be destroyed.
Short failures or open failures may result from the destruction of
output elements. Do not use loads that exceed the rated output
current.

Maintenance
When replacing a CPU Unit, transfer to the new Unit and confirm all
settings for clock data, internal holding bits, holding timers, and
counters before starting operation again.

Transportation and Storage

Use special packing boxes when transporting the ZEN and do not
subject it to excessive shock or vibration or drop it during shipment.
Store the ZEN within the rated ranges. If the ZEN has been stored
at 10C or lower, allow it to stand at room temperature for
three hours or longer before turning ON the power supply.

Precautions for Correct Use

Installation Environment
Do not install the ZEN in the following locations.
Locations subject to radical changes in temperature
Locations with high humidity subject to condensation
Locations subject to excessive dust or dirt
Locations subject to corrosive gas
Locations subject to direct sunlight
Do not install the ZEN in locations subject to shock or vibration.
Extended use in such locations may cause damage from stress.
In environments subject to static electricity (e.g., close to pipes
conveying forming materials, powders, or fluid materials), separate
the ZEN as far as possible from the source of static electricity.
The ZEN is neither waterproof nor oil-proof. Do not use it in
locations subject to water or oil.
Use the ZEN within the allowable power supply voltage range. Be
particularly careful in locations with bad power supply conditions,
e.g., large fluctuations in the power supply voltage.
Do not install the ZEN in locations subject to excessive noise,
which may cause the ZEN to fail.
Take appropriate and sufficient countermeasures when installing
systems in the following locations:
Locations subject to strong electromagnetic fields
Locations subject to possible exposure to radioactivity

Power Supply
Always turn OFF the power supply to the ZEN before attempting
any of the following.
Assembling the ZEN
Connecting or disconnecting any cables or wiring
Attaching or removing the Memory Cassette
Attaching or removing the Battery Unit
If the power supply is interrupted for two days or more (at 25C),
the internal capacitor will discharge and internal bit status and the
contents of PV areas will be lost or corrupted and dates and times
will be reset. When restarting operation after the power supply has
been interrupted for an extended period of time, check the system
in advance to confirm that no errors will occur.

Handling
Connect connectors only after confirming that the direction or
polarity is correct.
Failures could result if dust or dirt enters the ZEN. Always connect
the connector cover to the computer connector whenever it is not
being used.
Do not remove the label from the left side of the CPU Unit if a
Battery Unit is not mounted.

Other
The execution of the ladder program in the ZEN is different from
that for other PLCs. Refer to Difference between ZEN
Programmable Relays and PLC Ladder Program Execution on
page 33.
Abide by all local ordinances and regulations when disposing of the
ZEN.
The Battery Unit (ZEN-BAT01, sold separately) contains a lithium
battery. Observe all applicable legal requirements for your area
when disposing of the lithium battery.
