Installation Instructions (Network


License)

The following instructions are for installing SPSS Statistics using a network license. This
document is for end users who are installing SPSS Statistics on their desktop computers. If you
are a network administrator, see Network License Administrators Guide.pdf in the Installation
Documents directory on the product CD-ROM for information about setting up the network
license and distributing the product to end users.
During installation, you will be prompted for the following information. Except for the serial
number, all information is required. Contact your site administrator if you do not have the
required information.

System Requirements for SPSS Statistics


The minimum hardware and software requirements for SPSS Statistics are as follows:
Operating System

Microsoft Windows XP (32-bit version) or Vista (32-bit and 64-bit versions).

Configuration

Intel or AMD x86 processor running at 1 gigahertz (GHz) or higher.

512 megabytes (MB) of RAM or more. At least 1 gigabyte (GB) is recommended.

650 MB of available hard-disk space. Installing help for all languages requires 1.1 gigabytes
(GB).

CD-ROM drive.

Super VGA (800x600) or a higher-resolution monitor.

For connecting with SPSS Statistics Server, a network adapter running the TCP/IP network
protocol.

Software

Internet Explorer 6.0 or higher

Installing SPSS Statistics


Your administrator might have given you a CD-ROM or identified a network location from which
to install. Check with your administrator if you do not know how you are supposed to install
SPSS Statistics.
Note: To install SPSS Statistics, you must be logged on to your computer with administrator
privileges.

Upgrading from a Previous Release


You do not need to uninstall an old version of SPSS Statistics before installing the new version.
If you want to keep both versions, be sure to install the new version in a separate directory. If
you install the new version in the same directory in which a previous version is installed, the
previous version is automatically uninstalled.

Installing from a CD-ROM


Windows XP
E Insert the Disk 1 CD-ROM into your CD-ROM drive. The AutoPlay feature presents a menu.
E On the AutoPlay menu, click Install SPSS Statistics, and then follow the instructions that appear on

the screen. See Notes for Installation for any special instructions.
Windows Vista

You must run the AutoPlay as administrator:


E Close the AutoPlay window that automatically appeared.
E Using Windows Explorer, browse to the CD-ROM.
E Right-click setup.exe at the root of the CD and choose Run as Administrator.
E On the AutoPlay menu, click Install SPSS Statistics, and then follow the instructions that appear on

the screen. See Notes for Installation for any special instructions.

Installing from a Network Location


E From the Windows Start menu, choose Run.
E In the Run dialog box, type the location that your administrator provided for the setup.exe file.
E On the AutoPlay menu, click Install SPSS Statistics, and then follow the instructions that appear on

the screen. See Notes for Installation for any special instructions.

Installing from a Downloaded File


Windows XP
E Double-click the file that you downloaded, and then follow the instructions that appear on the

screen. See Notes for Installation for any special instructions.


Windows Vista

You must run the installer as administrator:


E Using Windows Explorer, browse to folder where you downloaded the file.
E Right-click the downloaded file and choose Run as Administrator.
E Follow the instructions that appear on the screen. See Notes for Installation for any special

instructions.

Notes for Installation


This section contains special instructions for this installation.
License type. Be sure to select Network License.
Serial number. If SPSS Inc. provided a serial number, enter the one delivered with your product.
Contact your administrator if you do not know the serial number.
Help language. SPSS Statistics provides the ability to change the user interface language. If
you want the help language to always match the user interface language, select Install Help in all
languages. Installing help for all languages significantly increases disk space requirements. For the
exact difference in disk space requirements, see System Requirements for SPSS Statistics on p. 1 .
License manager server name or IP address. This is the IP address or the name of the server on

which the network license manager is running. If you have multiple addresses or names, separate
them with a colon (for example, server1:server2:server3). Contact your administrator if you do
not have this information.

Installing Support for Dimensions Data Model and OLE DB Access


To access OLE DB data sources, you must have the following installed on the same computer on
which SPSS Statistics is installed:

.NET Framework, version 2.0 or later

Dimensions Data Model and OLE DB Access

An option to install the Dimensions Data Model and OLE DB Access is available on the Disk
2 Autoplay menu, or, if you downloaded SPSS Statistics, it is available from your Asset
Management Portal by clicking the Installation Instructions link for your product. The .NET
Framework is available as a download from http://www.microsoft.com/net. If you are not sure
whether you have the .NET Framework, try installing the Dimensions Data Model first. The
installation will check for the .NET Framework.

Note: All Dimensions products installed on one computer must be at the same version level. The
version of the Dimensions Data Model on the CD-ROM is 4.5. If you have an older version of a
Dimensions product installed, you will be prompted to uninstall it.

Enabling Programmability
You can enable programming SPSS Statistics with the following.

Python. For more information about installation, refer to SPSS Statistics-Python Integration

CD-ROM. If you downloaded SPSS Statistics, installation instructions are available from
your Asset Management Portal by clicking the Installation Instructions link for your product.

VB.NET. For more information, visit Developer Central (http://www.spss.com/devcentral/).

Checking Out/In a Commuter License


If your administrator configured the license server to enable the feature, you can check out a
commuter license. A commuter license allows you to use the network license when you are not
connected to the network. However, you must be connected to the network to check the license
out and check it back in.
Check Out a License
E Choose Commuter License in the Windows Start menu program group for SPSS Statistics.
E Select the license that you want to check out.
E In the Duration box, enter the number of days for which you want to check out the license. There

is a limit that your administrator configures.


E Click Check Out.

The commuter license will expire after the number of days specified by Duration. You can also
manually check the license back in at any time.
Check In a License
E Choose Commuter License in the Windows Start menu program group for SPSS Statistics.
E Select the license that you want to check in. License(s) that you checked out are indicated by

a check mark.
E Click Check In.

Uninstalling SPSS Statistics


To completely uninstall SPSS Statistics:
E Use the Windows Control Panel to remove SPSS Statistics.
