ESL Internship

Job Description
DATES: July 20 varies (in Sngal)
HOURS: 25 hrs/wk
Plus curriculum development from now until
departure for Sngal

SALARY: Unpaid, college credit


Room and Board provided
REPORTS TO: Executive Director

ORGANIZATION MISSION
The mission of Friends of Guoul, Inc., is to promote the advancement of skills and
knowledge of the people of the village of Guoul and the country of Sngal, so that they
have the ability to improve living standards, health, education, and general welfare
among their people. Initial emphasis will be on promoting girls education.
POSITION INFORMATION
The English as a Second Language (ESL) internship will offer experience in nonprofit
education program development and teaching ESL. The position provides direct support
of an extension of Friends of Guouls mission to advance education in the village of
Guoul, Senegal. www.Guoul.org
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Provide conversational English practice to high school students and other
members of the village of Guoul, in 8 week summer school, and after-school
program)
Help with 4th year of summer school in French and Math (ability to speak French
handy, but not essential) for elementary and middle-school students
Give guidance to non-native English speaking teachers.
Instruct students on how to use English e-learning programs where necessary.
Provide grammar and pronunciation/enunciation lessons five days a week, five
hours a day to high school students and other members of the village of Guoul.
Help develop course content
Collaborate with professors at Universite Gaston Berger (Sngal) and Guoul
staff
OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Must assist in tutoring program.

Must assist in the cyber caf when needed


Coordinate other native English speakers as classroom mentors

QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience
Graduate student or relevant life experience
Experience, coursework, or strong interest in Teaching English as a Second
Language (TESL)
Experience living or staying abroad in a non-European country for an
extended amount of time (at least three months).
Previous volunteer work in nonprofit environment preferred
Previous work history preferred
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Culturally sensitive, yet outgoing and confident people person
Ability to represent Friends of Guoul professionally with families and
students in the village of Guoul, Sngal
Demonstrated leadership skills
Team player, responsible, dependable
Flexible self-starter, ready to learnno task too big or too small.
High level of attention to detail, motivation, organizational, and interpersonal
skills
