ear Friends in Christ,

Today, relaxing on the beach of conejitos bay in

Huatulco in the state of Oaxaca in Mexico, my thoughts
wandered to another beach by the Sea of Galilee. More
than two thousand years ago, demoralized and defeated
disciples of Jesus went back to their old jobs as fishermen only to
find themselves eating a late breakfast with Jesus, risen from the
dead.
Gazing at the waves crashing on the rocks in the bay, I reflected
on my journey to Mexico. I flew from Albany to Detroit, to Mexico
City and finally to Huatulco. Each time the plane raced down the
runway attempting to gain enough speed to become air borne, I
wondered what the Wright brothers would have thought if they
had been in the seat next to mine. My guess is that they would
have been terrified and thrilled and amazed all at once.

During our three flights I read a book titled When Christ and the
Saints Slept, a historical novel written by Sharon Kay Penman that
chronicles the story of cousins Maude and Stephen as they fight for Englands throne. Reading of
sailors crossing the English Channel at the risk of their own lives, I wondered what medieval sailors
would think of taking a train via tunnel under the English Channel. A journey that took up to twentyfour hours by ship now takes a few minutes by a train traveling just under one hundred miles per hour.
My guess is that they would be terrified and thrilled and amazed all at once.
However terrified and amazed and thrilled the Wright brothers might be to fly on a modern jet or the
medieval sailor might be to travel through the Chunnel at lightning speed, their experience cannot
begin to be compared with the experience of the disciples when they met the risen Jesus. One day
they were certain the powers of darkness had one, and the next day their entire lives were turned
upside down. And yet, as amazing as Jesus resurrection was, that breakfast by the beach on the
Sea of Galilee was very ordinary ordinary, yet every minute filled with life and meaning.

After spending most of the day soaking in the beauty of conejitos bay, Barbara and I went for a walk
along the beach. As we approached the rocks at the end of the bay we met a young Canadian
who asked if we had discovered the bay on the other side of the hill. We had no idea there was
another bay. Let me show you, he offered. Within a few minutes we were confronted with a
spectacular bay without beach chairs or umbrellas just pristine beauty.
You and I all interact with people who are as unaware of the joy of living in Christ as Barbara and I
were unaware of the little bay over the hill. During the fifty days of Easter may we, like that young
Canadian, reach out and offer the invitation, Let me show you. It is close at hand.

A Mothers Day Tribute

This year I would like my sermon on Mothers Day to be a tribute to mothers but in order to do so I
need help. I am asking for members of Christ Church to share a special memory or story about their
mother, someone who was a mother figure in their life or as my godmother used to like to call
herself, my other mother. This request is going out to children of all ages at Christ Church. I will
include as many as time will allow in the sermon and plan on having all the stories available in
booklets for everyone to take home. Could you please either send me your story via e-mail at
dbeach21@verizon.net or place it in the box I will have in the back of the church. The deadline for
the stories will be April 24th!

There is a story of an atheist, who in his determination to
influence his family in his own unbelief, wrote Anti-God

My friends, as we celebrate the various Holy Days, and
as we are now in the Pentecost season, may you be
blessed by His Holy Presence and be guided by your own
Guardian Angel.

This dip is great tucked inside a pita or eaten with
tortilla chips. Take this to work for your lunch or use
it as an afternoon snack! Beans are a nutritional
powerhouse. They are loaded with nutrients,
including fiber and protein. Another benefit: they are
very inexpensive!
Total time: 10 minutes
Makes 14 servings
Serving Size: about cup
Nutrition Facts (per serving): Calories: 166; Total
Fat: 5 g; Saturated Fat: 0.6 g; Sodium: 99 mg; Carbohydrate: 25 g; Fiber: 7 g; Protein: 7 g
Ingredients:

2 (30-ounce) cans black eyed peas, rinsed and drained

1 (15-ounce) can garbanzo beans, rinsed and drained
1 (15-ounce) can white corn, rinsed and drained
1 small red onion, chopped fine
3 cloves garlic, chopped fine
1 large tomato, seeded and chopped
1 large rib celery, chopped
1 green bell pepper, chopped
cup fresh parsley, chopped
cup olive oil
cup red wine vinegar
Dash of sea salt
teaspoon ground black pepper

Directions:
1. In a medium sized bowl combine all ingredients. Stir well.
2. Cover with plastic wrap and chill until ready to serve.
