Operating Volume Flow Measurement in the Natural Gas

Medium Pressure Net
Reliable flow measurement using the non-intrusive ultrasonic clamp-on procedure: simple and cost-effective
retrofitting without work on pipes and interruption of supply.

Measuring Task Method Medium

? Flow measurement Ultrasound Natural Gas (H Gas)

Features Measuring Task………………………………………..

Medium: natural gas (H Gas) The public utility company of a medium-sized North Rhine-Westphalian
city supplies approximately 22,000 residents with drinking water and
Pipes: 160.0 x 9.1 mm energy. Its natural gas net encompasses an underground pipeline
Material: polyethylene (PE) system of approx. 120 km. The natural gas distribution is carried out via
the natural gas medium pressure net with a pressure of 650 mbar. The
Pressure: 650 mbar gas is supplied to the end users via the 50 mbar low pressure net after a
gas transfer and metering stations has reduced the gas pressure.
Media temperature: approx. 8°C
For a net analysis, as a basis for planning future expansions and for
Application underground rapid localization and repair of possible disturbances, measuring
equipment is installed at various points in the natural gas medium
pressure net to measure the flow. These measurements are not subject
to obligatory calibration, but carried out as operation measurements. Up
to now, turbine wheel meters were used within these gas transfer and
metering stations. In the present case, the stations had not been
equipped with meters. Retrofitting or converting the gas transfer and
metering stations would have been very costly.

Solution…………………………………………………
Instead of converting the gas transfer and metering stations, the public
utility company has decided to go with the cost effective alternative:
non-intrusive gas flow measurement using clamp-on ultrasonic
technology. Now, the natural gas flow is measured before it reaches the
gas transfer and metering station. To do this, it is enough to expose the
PE pipeline at the measuring point in order to mount the clamp-on
ultrasonic transducers on the pipe. By selecting appropriate measuring
points with long straight lengths upstream and downstream, a high
measuring precision can be achieved.
The non-intrusive, acoustic measuring procedure is not subject to
mechanical wear and therefore offers a long lifetime and high reliability.
Simple retrofitting underground: the clamp-on
ultrasonic transducers are simply mounted on
the natural gas pipe externally.

Advantages…………………………………………….
No costly conversion of the gas transfer and metering stations
Simple upgrade without supply interruption
Underground installation possible without problem
No mechanical wear of the meter
High turndown ratio
No leakage risk through the measuring system
Recording of even the smallest leakage volume
Plain-looking miracle box: The transmitter
FLUXUS® G 704 measures the gas flow reliably.
