Big Closeout Book Sale

This is the last chance for all those of

and Sunday, May 22and 23 in Piper Hall. The
sale will be in Piper Hall out of May heat so that
is a plus.

Note from Charlie

The Casa provides so many unique and enriching opportunities to improve relationships with others
in our lives and most importantly with God. Many of the offerings at the Casa are free! I recently
attended the Stations of the Resurrection in our church. Norbert Zwickl, Director of Music and
Liturgy, composed the program with the help of his staff and choir. Truly moving was this program
depicting the lives of those who were affected after the crucifixion and later transformed by the
resurrection. With nearly 240 people in attendance, it was a beautiful way to draw closer to Jesus.
I recently sat outside for mass this spring to better understand the dynamic this is for those in our worship
community who participate outside the main church. I must say that although the breeze and air is nice, I
miss not celebrating all together in one space. On many Sundays, more are sitting outside than inside. I love
our church very much yet our fractured way of worship is troubling. Certainly, since becoming a Conventual
Church, the trend for a growing worship community is our reality. We need to prayerfully continue to
understand and consider how we the community will support our mission to welcome with our most
Franciscan ethos of humility, simplicity and generosity. The Casa is attracting new families and individuals at a
record pace. The Spirit is Alive here!
This past weekend, the Casa offered our 12th annual Denim and Dreams friend-raiser. Kris Cook and Lora
Nelson chaired the event and with over 350 people attending I do say, many new friends were made. I urge
you to attend next year if you can. Interestingly, we also had a 12-step retreat that began this same evening.
The Casa uses evaluations to allow staff opportunities for improvement with food, service, grounds and
programs. The positive comments were off the charts for every facet of the operation.
Mingling the many programs, events and liturgy at the Casa is indeed many times at the mercy of the Holy
Spirit, good planning and a committed group of staff and volunteers. It works!
The Casa management has created a Business Model that provides an optical illustration of how and in what
way choices and direction is decided in the discernment process of budget, human resources and strategic
planning. This tool integrates Franciscan values that were conceived by the friars and staff blending solid
conservative business practice with our core mission. If you would ever like to see this document I would be
happy to share it or email it to you.

The Treasure Box
The Beatitudes Church has
been participating in the
Treasure Box food program
since last November. It is a fantastic program
and has only been getting better. The
Beatitudes Church happens to be a delivery
site for the food boxes and they are 7 miles
from the Casa.
This program is for anyone who is feeling the
pinch of our economic hard times. It has been
embraced by the senior population, by parents
who have their children and grandchildren
returning home due to job loss and middle class
folks who are watching their assets shrink.

A message from the Director.
The Season for Nonviolence continues
at the Casa. Last week’s Gospel in
Action session focused on the topic of
Nonviolence in the Workplace. The
session was led by Dan Wolford of Pax
Christi. When we think of violence at
work, we naturally think of those who have shot
bosses or co-workers in fits of anger. But we focused
on more subtle forms of violence that can happen at
work. Violence is done when we gather to gossip,
harming others self respect and reputations. Violence
is also done when we take credit for work that is not
our own or conversely when we let others take blame
for our actions. We discussed unrealistic expectations
and lack of real communication within organizations
and how that can lead to increased stress. We may
not immediately think of these actions as being
violent; but when the environment where we work is
one of little trust or affirmation and is highly critical, it
can become a dehumanizing place. Dan provided
the group with the Workplace Pledge of Nonviolence
put out by the Institute for Peace and Justice in St.
Louis. In this document, it asks each individual to
commit themselves to being nonviolent, peaceable
people in the ways we communicate, manage and
work cooperatively with each other. We can also act
nonviolently by resisting and confronting harmful
behaviors that happen at work.
PEACEABLE ANGER

Anger disrupts home life, offices and
relationships. Anger is not bad in and of itself. Come
explore peaceful ways to express anger. During the
class, participants will have opportunities to practice
different ways to convey anger and create new rules
for expressing it. By the end of the session, all will have
new ways to handle angry feelings.
Francesca Wolfe is a licensed clinical social
worker with 15 years experience in counseling
and 13 years teaching counseling skills and a
member of the counseling ministry at the Casa
and a member of the planning committee for
the Season of Nonviolence.

Selling Fair Trade Coffee
It’s about a whole lot more than
“just” coffee!
Stop poverty and help reduce a root cause of
immigration by purchasing a bag of Café Justo
coffee after all the masses on

This new Faith in Action Ministry will be selling
fair trade coffee once a month throughout the
summer. Fresh-roasted coffee is only $10 a
pound for Aribica style and $15 a pound for the
gourmet brand. There is a variety to meet
every taste, including medium or dark roast,
whole bean or ground, regular or decaf. Your
purchase of freshly-roasted coffee not only
tastes great, but also supports a coffee farmer
cooperative in Chiapas, Mexico
and a coffee roasting facility in
Agua Prieta, Mexico. If you'd like
