SCREWS

Screrw
A threaded cylindrical pin or rod with a head at one end, engaging a threaded
hole and used either as a fastener or as a simple machine for applying power, as
in a clamp, jack, etc. is known as screw.

Types of screws according to the head style

Flat head screws
A countersunk head with a flat top.
Abbreviated FH

Oval head screws

A countersunk head
Abbreviated OH or

with a rounded top.

OV

Pan head screws

A slightly rounded head with short vertical sides.
Abbreviated PN

Truss head screws

An extra wide head with a rounded top.
Abbreviated TH

Round
A domed head.
Abbreviated RH

Hex head screws

A hexagonal Head.
Abbreviated HH or HX

Hex washer head screws

A hex head with built in washer.

Slotted hex washer head screws

A hex head with built in washer and a slot.

Socket cap head screws

A small cylindrical head using a socket drive.

Button head screws

A low profile rounded head using a socket drive.

According to drive types

Phillips drive screws
The standard drive type for most screws.
Abbreviated PH

Frierson drive screws

Similar to Phillips. Requires a Frierson driver for installation.

Slotted drive screws

A slot in the head.
Abbreviated SL

Combination drive screws

A combination of slotted and Phillips drives.
Abbreviated Combo

Socket, Hex or Allen drive screws

A hexagonal hole for use with an Allen wrench.

One Way drive screws

Installs with a normal slotted driver but cannot be removed without
special tools.

Square drive screws

Also known as Robertson drive.
Abbreviated SQ or SD.

Star drive screws

Also known as Torx. A six-pointed star pattern, specifically designed
to prevent cam-out and stripped heads.

Thread Types
Screw threads are the combination of ridges and recesses on the body of the
screw that allow for the screw to be fixed into place via a compatible thread
inside of a pre drilled hole or nut, the exterior threads on screws are thus known
as male while the interior threads of their intended location are female.

Machine Screw Threads:

Machine threads are the standard thread type, designed to fit with a pre-drilled
interior thread of a nut or tapped hole, they have few unique features aside from
a high degree of accuracy when it comes into screwing into their intended
partner thread.

Wood screw threads

Wood screw threads are specifically designed for use in wood; they have a sharp,
tapered point and wide threads to allow them to be drilled into a wooden surface
directly rather than requiring a pre-drilled hole to fit into.

ADVANTAGES OF SCREWED JOINTS

Screwed joints are highly relabel in service.

screwed joints are easy to assemble and disassemble.
A wide range of screwed joints is available to adopted under various
working conditions
Screws are relatively cheap.
Due to standardization, cheap manufacturing processes can be adopted.
Screws can be used to transmit power such as lead screw.

DISADVANTAGES OF SCREWED JOINTS

The stress concentration in the threaded portions is variable under

variable conditions
he strength of the screwed joints is not comparable with welded or riveted
joints
Screwed joints become loose due to machine vibrations.
