DECA WEEK FUN AND PR OMOTION

DECA Week is celebrated
across the nation to
promote and educate
students about DECAs
mission and goals. This
year the designated week
was March 2125th.
Students planned several
activities to inform the
student body about DECA
and about the school
store, the Red Zone. All
week long business and
marketing song clips were
played over the
announcements.
Students had to turn in
their guess to the Red
Zone to claim a prize.
Mondays activity was to
find the DECA pencils

hidden throughout the

school. Twelve pencils
were hidden throughout
the school for students to
find. Once students found
a DECA pencil, they had to
return it to the Red Zone
for a free candy bar or they
could just keep the pencil
to use. The second day
was the Minute to Win It
game that required
students to move cotton
balls from one bowl to
another. Of course, they
had to do this in one
minute. Winners were
rewarded with a Redmen
lanyard. Wednesday was
Lucky Tray Day. DECA
stickers were placed on the

bottom of lunch trays

and the lucky winners
were to go to the Red
Zone to pick up their free
Redmen lanyard
Thursday a corn hold
tournament was held
during the lunch periods.
Friday was Ask a DECA
member about DECA.
Members had to be
ready to answer
questions about DECA.
Students that asked
questions received a
small treat. This was a
fun filled week designed
to let students know that
we are an active and fun
group to get involved
with.

CHICKEN BBQ BENEFITS DECA AND

THE AFTER PROM COMMITTEE
On Friday, February 12th, DECA members served up some BBQ
Chicken as a fundraiser for the chapter and for a community service
project that would benefit Fostorias After Prom Committee (an
organization that provides a fun and safe environment for students to
attend after the dance). Nearly 200 meals were dished out and DECA
was able to donate $300 to the Committee to help defray their costs.
Additional profit from the dinner was used to help send members to
the State DECA competition. All members chipped in and either sold
tickets or helped promote and serve
customers.

DECA MEMBERS DINING WITH STYLE

Why are there two forks and which one should I use?
What do I do with my napkin? What if I get a phone
call during a meal? These questions and many more
were answered during our annual dining etiquette
lesson. DECA members practiced dining etiquette
while they ate a nice meal provided by the school
cafeteria. After learning about dining etiquette in class,
students were asked to demonstrate their knowledge of
professional place settings, the appropriate use of
utensils, proper table conversation, and the appropriate
way to cut and chew their food. The meal was
conducted to simulate a professional dinner meeting
where they would be able to have proper dining
conversation. They did an awesome job!

PROBABILITY AND LOGI STICS IN MARKETING?

There is always something interesting going on in
Marketing! During a marketing research project
students learned about sampling methods and
calculating percentages. Students were given a
package of M & Ms and had to randomly select M &
Ms from the bag. When they were finished, they
compared their random samples to the actual package
and tested the difference. This helped them with
another project that they had later in the unit that dealt
with sampling.
Then, during the distribution and logistic unit, students
were asked to send a boiled egg through a channel of
distribution. Students had modes of transportation,
which included spoons, paper bags, hand towels, and
other interesting items. In addition, students had
obstacles to overcome when getting their egg from
Point A to Point B. Side notenot all eggs made it
through the channel without injury!

On March 19th, Brystan Baeder and Hariket Bilodia received
2nd place at the State DECA Competition in Columbus. These
two DECA members proudly hit the stage to collect their
trophy and medallions and at that point they became eligible
to attend the International Career Development Conference
(aka National Competition) in Nashville, Tennessee. For the
competition Brystan and Hariket were required to take a 100
question test, and then read and resolve an extensive case
study that included 7 key performance indicators. Once they
developed their plan they presented it to local judges.
Cierra Valenti and Trey Yates also made Fostoria DECA proud
by receiving a medallion for their top ten awards!

HERE THEY COME!
With a 2nd place win at the State DECA competition,
Brystan Baeder and Hariket Bilodia headed to Nashville to
compete in the International DECA Competition. The
competition, that took place April 22nd through April 27th,
and would be a great opportunity for these two to network
with students from other states, utilize their skills they have
learned over their two years in the program, and to tour
Nashville in the process.
The guys started the trip with a 5K run to benefit
Muscular Dystrophy! After that, each day had something
special in store for them. From Opryland to trying alligator
tail, they experienced many new things, along with the task
of competing.
Although they did not make it into the top ten, they felt
good about their performance and about the experience.
With over 225 competitors in each event, it is really exciting
to just be a part of it.

Ready for the 5K run!

MudHens Seminar and Game!
Giant Game of Life at Finance 101:

This Spring, DECA members had two learning

opportunities, outside of school, that they were able
to participate in. The first was called Finance 101,
sponsored by the Northwest Ohio Credit Union and
hosted by Owens Community College. Finance 101
was like a giant game of Life, where students would
learn how to budget their money and pay bills.
First students were given a career, along with
their salary. After calculating their monthly take
home pay, students had to log the amount into their
check register. All students began with a positive
balance, although some began with more. From
there they
proceeded to the various tables, where they were
given life choices. For example, at the first table
they were given a choice of living arrangements
(some more expensive than others). Once they made
a selection they had to subtract the monthly amount
from their check register. They continued through
the game and had surprises along the waysome
surprises were good, while others were not. There
was a table that had a wheel that students had to
spin. On the wheel there were such surprises as you
won $200 on a lottery ticket, add that to your check
register, or you got a flat tire and need to purchase a
new one, so they had to subtract $100. Some
students ran out of money before the end of the game
and had to take out a loan to cover their day to day
expenses. Overall, the students said that they had a
great time and really learned a lot. They thought that
the experience was pretty eye opening.

Take me out to the Ball Game!!

After a rainy April, DECA members, along
with other Fostoria business students were
eager for a day of learning and a day at a sunny
Mud Hens baseball game! The event began
right away in the morning as students listened
to speakers from the Mud Hens, OI, and the
FBI. The speakers talked about ticket sales,
sponsorships, growth of the Mud Hens and
downtown Toledo, and the careers in Sports
Marketing and Management and in Law
Enforcement.
