REPLACEMENT INTERVAL GUIDE
Pre 99 The OEM has not recommended a timing belt
replacement interval for this engine.
Typical trade practice indicates that, as a precaution,
the timing belt should be replaced at 60,000 mile
intervals.
99 on Toyota recommends replacement every
90,000 miles or 72 months, whichever occurs first.
The previous use and service history of the vehicle
must always be taken into account.

REMOVAL
1. Remove engine splash guard.
2. Drain coolant and remove:
r Upper radiator hose.
r Accessory drive belt(s).
r Radiator shroud.
r Cooling fan & coupling.
r PAS pump (leave lines connected).
r A/C compressor and bracket (leave lines
connected).
r Dipstick and guide tube.

3. Temporarily install the crankshaft pulley bolt j
4. Turn crankshaft clockwise until No.1 cylinder at

INSTALLATION
NOTE: Ensure engine is cold before installing
timing belt and observe all alignment and
installation markings.
1. Check guide and tensioner pulleys for
smoothness of operation. Replace if necessary.

6. Install the timing belt to the sprockets and
pulleys in the following order, aligning marks on
belt with marks on sprockets:
r Camshaft sprocket (CA2).
r Guide pulley.
r Camshaft sprocket (CA1).
r Water pump pulley.
r Crankshaft sprocket.
r Tensioner pulley.
NOTE: Ensure arrow mark on belt is pointing
away from engine.
7. Ensure timing belt taut between sprockets on
non-tensioned side.
8. Using a press, slowly depress pushrod into auto

1. Desmontar la guarda inferior del motor.
2. Vaciar el sistema de enfriamiento y desmontar:
r Manguera superior del radiador.
r Banda(s) auxiliar(es).
r Cubierta del radiador.
r Ventilador de enfriamiento y su embrague.
r Bomba de PAS (dejar las mangueras
conectadas).
r Compresor del acondicionador de aire y
soporte (dejar las mangueras conectadas).
r Indicador de nivel de aceite y su tubo.

DOMMAGES MOTEUR
ATTENTION : Ce moteur est de type ROUE LIBRE,
c'est--dire qu'en cas de dfaillance de la courroie de
distribution, il est FORT PROBABLE que les soupapes et
les pistons ne soient endommags fortement. Quoi qu'il
soit, par mesure prventive, contrler les pressions de
compression de tous les cylindres.
