We had the marathon today. A dozen of us sped off. People stood on the streets, cheering us on. It was
like we were in the Olympics. Peter was ahead of me. So was Owen. Then I shot off. I was racing ahead. My
legs were going faster than the rest of me. I sped off onto the main road and kept running past other runners
until there was only Peter left in front of me. On and on, I ran. My legs and lungs were hurting but I couldnt
stop. Just outside the town, I ran past Peter. A minute later, I was declared the winner of the marathon.

aunt decided to go to Perth for holiday. We went in two cars but when we were about halfway, there my uncle
wanted to turn round and comeback. He said it was too far, and it was terribly hot too. One day it was 48
degree Celsius. Even at night it was really hot. Anyway, what we decided to do was to drive back about 160
km to a place where the train went through. Then we put both cars on the train and we went to Perth by train.
That was fun. It was a good train.
We had a good time in Perth but we had to cut our holiday short. You see, while we were there my

Different language learners learn words in different ways. Some learners make a list and put into it the
meaning of new words in their mother tongue and try to learn them by heart. However, others do not. Instead, they
write one or two example sentences with each new word in order to remember how to use the word in the right
way.
In order to remember words better, some learners even write each word and its use on a small piece of
paper and stick it somewhere in their house so as to learn it any time.
Many language learners do not try to learn all new words they come across. They usually underline or
highlight only the words they want to learn. This help them remember important words.
Learners do not only learn the meanings of new words but also how to spell and pronounce them so as to
use them in both writing and speaking.
There are also different ways of learning the same number of words. For example, if you try to learn ten
words in two days, you can do so in two ways. You can learn the first five words the first day, and then learn the
other five the next day. However, because revision is necessary, you can learn all the ten words the first day and
revise them the next day. This helps you practice the words more times.
Language learners should try different ways of learning words so as to find out the best way for
themselves. Ask yourself the question: How should I learn words?
1. Why do some learners write example sentences with new words?
..
2. What do some learners do to remember words better?
