Chapter 4
PRESENTATION, ANALYSIS, AND INTERPRETATION OF DATA
This chapter presents, analyzes and interprets the data gathered
based from the responses of first year Bachelor of Elementary
Education students at Iloilo Science and Technology University.
The study aimed to determine the influence of Study Habits to
the Academic Performance of First Year Bachelor of Elementary
Education students of Iloilo Science and Technology University during
First Semester, Academic Year 2014-2015. Specifically, this study will
seek answer to the following questions:
1. What is the profile of respondents when grouped according to
sex, income of the parents, birth order, library use, and place of
residence while in school?
2. What are the study habits of first year students as a whole or
grouped according to sex, income of the parents, birth order, library
use, and place of residence while in school?
3. What are the academic performance of first year students as a
whole or grouped according to sex, income of the parents, birth order,
library use, and place of residence while in school?
4. Is there a significant difference between the study habits and
academic performance of first year BEED students?

5. Is there a significant relationship between the study habits and

Table 1 revealed that most of the respondents came from low-income


family (56.7%), belong in middle and younger birth order (36.7%) and usually
live with their parents while studying (53.3).

Table 2 reveals that as an entire group, the respondents has a good


study habits because most of them had a study habits (83.3%). According to
the income of the parents, those who had a low income have a good study
habits because of the percentile of 46.7. Those who belong to the middle and
younger order in the family have a good study habits which is 33.33%. And
lastly those who live with their parents have a good study habits compared to
those who lives in the boarding house. The result of the study agreed to the
study of Kizlik (2012) and Menzel, cited by Rana and Kausar (2011).
Therefore, it implies that as a student, it is not need to have a high income
for you to have a good study habits. And also you should not belong to the

elder order in the family. The presence of the parents plays the vital role in
developing the study habits of the students.

Table 3 reveals that as an entire group, the academic performance is


proficient because of their mean which is 63.81. The students that belong in
a low income family have a good academic performance which has a mean of
34.43. According to the birth order, those students that are in younger order
have a good academic performance which had a mean of 23.16. And in the

place of residence, that lives with their parents has a good academic
performance which has a mean of 29.71. The result of this study agreed to
the study of Eccles, 1993. Therefore it implies that study habits have good
effects to the academic performance of the students.

As can be seen in this table, comparison of the mean from the


independent groups and the study habits would suggest that within
the groups perform better academically (sum of square 4. 500), (DF =
28), (mean square = .161) than the between groups (sum of square = .
467), (DF = 1), (mean square=.467). To test whether the difference in
mean performance between the two groups was statistically
significant, independent samples ANOVAs was performed. The result in
Table 4 found no significant difference with a significant value of 0. 099

for ANOVA which is greater than 0.05 alphas set in this study. The null
hypothesis is therefore accepted.

Table 5 reveals that no significant relationship was found


between the Academic Performance and Study Habits of BEED First
Year students using the Pearson Correlation with a significant value of
0.428 which is greater than 0.05 alpha set in this study. The null
hypothesis is therefore accepted.
