LUPINES
By Aaron Retherford
For a decade, the Autism Puzzle Foundation
has been raising tens of thousands of dollars
to help Vermonters who are on the autism
spectrum via small individual grants.
After 10 years of fundraising, the APFs
founding Board of Directors decided it was
time to end their monthly grant program and
go big to give one lasting gift to Barre. That
$75,000 gift became a reality last Wednesday
at the ribbon cutting for the Imagination
Station, a Snoezelen Room located in
Washington County Mental Health Services
WellSpace building, at 23 Summer St.
It was absolutely gratifying to see all the
years of hard work come to fruition, APF
President and co-founder Randy Lamberti said.
It is a great feeling to know that our legacy will
live on in Barre for many years to come.
Lamberti wanted a way to honor his mother,
Kay, after she passed away in 2014. There is a
memorial dedicated to Kay Lamberti in the
room. Lamberti approached WCMHS with the
idea of creating a Snoezelen Room and while
WCMHS Executive Director Mary Moulton
said the organization had never considered the
idea in the past, they were on board as soon as
Lamberti explained his vision.
Then it was just a matter of finding a location. In what used to be an eight-room space
at WellSpace, WCMHS facilities workers
knocked down walls and repaired water damage in order to create a space filled with
interactive activities. There are even quiet
rooms for those who need less stimulation.
Imagination Station will be primarily used
to serve individuals with Autism, but can also
be utilized by anyone who can benefit from
sensory based therapeutic settings, including
people with forms of dementia. Its also arguably an awe-inspiring experience for anyone
experiencing a Snoezelen Room for the first
time with dozens of interactive activities.
Moulton said the room will serve 20-50 local
children a week initially, but she would like to
see it help Vermonters across the state eventually. She said she expects the room to be open
for full-time use the second week of June.
Were so grateful to the community and
grateful for Randys leadership, to the whole
crew, and the Autism Puzzle Foundation,
Moulton said. Were going to make something special happen here.
So far, Imagination Station has 20 trainers,
who can then train family members to explain
to their loved ones how best to use the offerings
in the room. Theres everything from giant

y father retired from his long military career and my family moved
to Barre when I was three years old. I graduated from Spaulding
High School in 1983 and attended Champlain College. I currently reside
in Barre Town with my husband, Brad and three sons. I play in the
Central Vermont Women's Broomball league and I enjoy watching my
youngest son play sports..
I am a recent addition to the Noyle W. Johnson family, joining in
February 2016. I have been working with businesses and individuals on
their unique insurance needs statewide for over 30 years. Insurance can
be confusing, and I enjoy helping my clients navigate through it to ensure
their needs are met. I am a past Board of Director for the Vermont
Chamber of Commerce.
There is no place in the world I would rather work and reside. Vermont
is not only great because of its beauty, but because of its strong communities. I am happy to be part of the NWJ family and I am proud to have been
working with so many Vermonters on their insurance needs. I look forward to helping you as well.

The Walk route begins and ends at
Montpelier High School and is an easy twomile loop through downtown Montpelier.
This route allows more people and dogs of all
fitness levels and abilities to participate. The
route includes parading across the steps of the
Vermont State House and walking on sidewalks and the bike path. Well-behaved dogs
on leashes are welcome, but walkers dont
need to bring a dog or even be pet owners to
participate. All they need is a desire to help
shelter animals.
A post-Walk celebration will follow that
includes vendors, free refreshments for everyone, and prizes for the top fundraisers.
Critical funds raised help CVHS continue
to save more animal lives by providing comfortable shelter, quality medical care, and
adoption services, said CVHS Board
President, Amber Countis, This years goal
of $48,000 is our largest goal to date for the
Walk.

1953. Darwin served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.
He was stationed in Germany as part of the postal service.
Later he joined the American Legion Post #195 in China,
Maine, serving a stint as its president, then remained active in
annual events for years. Early in his career, he joined the sales
division of Ralston Purina Feeds. Ralston Purina transferred
Dar to Greenfield, Massachusetts, for a year, then to Maine,
settling his family on China Lake in 1968. After leaving
Purina, Darwin sold automobiles at Pullen Ford and Joseph
Motor Company in Waterville. Eventually he turned to fulltime real estate sales. With his wife, Ruth, he founded China
Area Real Estate and a Wash and Dry on Route 3 in South
China. Darwin and Ruth enjoyed traveling in their motor
home. For many summers they volunteered at different
national and state parks around the U.S., including Devils
Tower National Monument in Wyoming, Lassen Volcanic
National Park in Northern California, as well as Grand Isle
and Jamaica state parks in Vermont.
remain in their homes and communities. Chornyak has extensive experience in managing human services not-for-profits,
including as the Executive Director of the Parent Child Center
in Milton, Vermont.
Mary Hayden has joined CVCOAs administrative team as
the new Director of Development and Communications.
Previously, Hayden managed statewide programs for court
advocates for vulnerable children and youth and other family
court programs in the Vermont Judiciary. She has both personal and volunteer experience with seniors.
I am thrilled to be able to continue working to serve vulnerable populations in Vermont. CVCOA is a trail blazer in
advocacy for healthy aging initiatives that value seniors
engaged socially and economically in vibrant, diverse communities, Hayden said.
CVCOA is very pleased to announce that Nancy Zorn has
been appointed to the CVCOA Board. Zorn recently retired as
the Executive Director of Green Mountain United Way after
15 years, where she led efforts to improve education, job
training, Tropical Storm Irene flood relief, and programs to
improve nutrition and physical activity. Prior to that, she
worked with the American Cancer Society for 20 years. Zorn
served on the Governors Building Bright Futures Council for
educational initiatives and the Jump$Start Coalition to
improve financial literacy. Zorn hopes to increase awareness
in younger people about elder issues and leverage community
resources to support healthy aging.

Dear Grace,
Im helping my sister Judy who is in the early stage of
dementia and the time is coming when she/we need to make
some decisions about where she is currently living and
whether or not she can continue there. She has sons but they
live out of the area and Im not sure how much they will be
involved. Physically, she is doing okay but emotionally and
cognitively, not so much. What can I do to help her through
this process? I need help figuring this out!
Thanks,
Suzanne
Dear Suzanne,
You need to have an honest discussion with your sister
about the possible need to make changes to her living arrangements and get her thoughts and emotions around this and I
encourage you to involve her sons even though they are not

It doesnt take a lot of hard work to decide not to drink and drive this holiday weekend. All it
takes is the good judgement to hand over your keys to a sober driver. Enjoy your day off this
Memorial Day, but please remember to celebrate responsibly. Dont drink and drive, and dont
get in the car with any driver who has been drinking. When you drink and drive, you put yourself
in danger and endanger the welfare of everyone else on the road. Plan ahead if you plan on
drinking: Remember to designate a sober driver early in the evening.

HEALTH CARE
LOOKING FOR A MIRACLE/
Lose 20 pounds in one week?
This is almost impossible!
Weight loss ads must reflect
the typical experiences of the

to fraudulent ads include words
like: breakthrough, effortless,

see words like these be skeptical. Before you invest your time
and money call the ATTORNEY

WANT A CURE-ALL?
Health fraud is a business that
sells false hope. Beware of unsubstantiated claims for health
products and services. There
are no Quick Curesno matter what the ad is claiming. TIP:
DO NOT rely on promises of a

out for key words such as exclusive secret, amazing results,
or scientific breakthrough. For

intermediate division, with a potential eventually of becoming a Late Model team, was the
goal of former promoter Tom Curley when he
took over the track in 1982.
I think there are a couple of things that
have given us a little success over the years.
Certainly the design of Thunder Road, long
before my time, has established it as a challenging and exciting race track, said Curley,
President of ACT and since 1982, part-owner
of Thunder Road with Ken Squier. I also
think that having divisions that establish the
training ground, and the possibility of moving
a program to a more sophisticated level if a
team wants to go in that direction, has helped
us over the years. Nearly all our Late Model
stars of today have come out of one of the
other two developed divisions. I am proud of
that. Remember TR was shut down for nearly
two years back in 1980-81 when it had been
sold and only raced a handful of events under
the new owner.
The ACT Late Model point season gets
underway with the Mekkelsen RV Memorial
Day Classic Sunday, May 29, 2016. The race
program will feature the first point race for
ACT Late Models, the Bond Auto Tigers,
Allen Lumber Street Stocks, along with the
Pro All Stars Series and Modified divisions.
Gates open at 10 a.m. and admission for the
Mekkelsen Memorial Day Classic is just $25.
Kids 12 and under are free.

contract to buy a house (any house you want!) by the end
of May, and well pay $500 of your closing costs.
Dont worry, we can also help you get pre-approved.
Heres more math: If youre in contract to buy a house by the
end of May, youre going to be in your new house by the end
of July. Think about that...summer in your new home. Ahhh
