Psycho-Spiritual Components
Supportive, brings energy into the meridian. A marsh is an area of fertility, value, and nourishment. Helps one to appreciate
quality, bringing metal to the small intestine. Helps one to receive from heaven and eliminate the rubbish. Cleanses and
oxygenates the meridian, bringing air into fire. Best I autumn, allow fire to burn purely and allows the patient to look at
themselves clearly (who they are and where they are going) by removing and pruning. Good for a small intestine CF who
is severely depressed, suicidal, insecure, childish, sarcastic. Use when someone has difficulty touching or is mentally frozen.
Also good for splits: when there is rubbish in one part of the body, when there is a good mind with a poor spirit, when one is
in their head but out of contact with their body. Overall good for a non-specific quantity change. The jing well point brings
energy into the meridian, opens the orifices, increases awareness. The job of the small intestine is to separate the pure from the
impure, the pure is that which is needed to nourish the body and soul. When imbalanced impure food, drink, thought, might be
retained, a toxic buildup of physical emotional poison. Helps the small intestine and large intestine o purify and eliminate,
promotes the elimination of wastes. This is a fire meridian, all life is dependent on the warmth of fire, love, friendship, and
affection. For a farmer a marsh is fertile ground, valuable and nourishing not wasteland. Excess metal energies can lead to
cool and rigid types of imbalances: severe headaches, asthma, bronchitis, breathlessness, dry mouth. Metal also functions as Yin
cooling aspect, the metal point can be used to control raging fire energies. When there is an excess of heat, metal can begin to
melt; symptoms of cardiac pain, convulsions, diarrhea, tonsillitis, cough with lots of sputum. [JRW]
The small intestine is the organ of alchemy. The task of the small intestine is to separate the course (that which we ne to let go)
from the fine (the purified essence of life). Opening the orifices and energizing ire to burn more brightly increases awareness
and helps the function of the small intestine. The small intestine corresponds with the wisdom aspect of the heart, and it relies
on the heart for direction. Small surge, HT-9, creates a little marsh full of love, friendship, affection, and passion which are vital
for life and necessary for growth. This point may help someone who is in their head to connect with their heart, to be more
aware of their feelings. As the sixth meridian, the small intestine is responsible for transmutation, alchemical purification,
and transformation. Geometrically this is represented by the six-pointed star: as above, so below. The higher blends with the
lower to actualize the middle. The intelligence of the heart, the small intestine, is capable of discriminating shades of meaning
that the dialectical mind is not even aware of. This point ignites the fires of transformation, allowing the patient to see
themselves more clearly. An imbalance in the small intestine means that on some level transformation is distorted or not
happening. Helps one to know who they are and where theyre going, helping one to separate useful information for the less
important or irrelevant. [ALHIM]

Radial forearm: medial thumb and index finger; flexor of the little finger; medial surface of the thigh.
Medial (internal) arch, same side.

Psycho-Spiritual Components
Water (secretions) is necessary for transformation to occur. This helps flush the system, clearing the small
intestine of wastes and toxins, affects all secretions. For insufficient secretions, lack of water red swelling
in the throat, dry throat, cough, dry (poor) digestion, dry pains, chest pain, weak eyesight with dry, inflamed
eyes, inflammation of skin, eyes, shoulder, rheumatoid arthritis, heat in the joints, fever. Brings the quality of
water (cleansing, fluidity) to the small intestine. Transformations and separating are made difficult without
fluidity. Cleans and bathes the small intestine when there is a deficiency of water. If the small intestine is
waterlogged, one may be bogged down and fire may be almost out. As water dampens fire, ones spirit can be
reduced, bringing a kind of fear that manifests as confusion and indecision. Courage is needed to sort out
ones life. Excess water in fire sweating, copious eye watering. Unable to lift arms or grasp objects. [JRW]
Located in the crease (the valley) distal to the MP joint. From metal to water there needs to be a continuous
movement around the cycle of transformation. Water must not stagnate in the marsh; there needs to be a
drainage, a flowing out, a forward movement. [ALHIM]

Psycho-Spiritual Components
Aids in the birth of new ideas and growth where there is stagnation. Here someone could be stuck, never maturing or sorting himself
out but never changing. If the small intestine doesnt develop, a person can be unable to give birth to new ideas, can be stuck in
wood and never develop and mature, never sorting out life transformation is not taking place. Useful on a mental level. Brings
mental clarity and structure to the small intestine. The fire can be buried under ashes ad the small intestine can cease to perform its
functions depression down to the depths, cant go on. Sedate this point if there has been too much growth and energy is running out
as when a child outgrows its own strength. This point can bring a lot of energy into the meridian, as the mother point for fire. An
imbalance of wood ad fire can cause instability and shut off any part of the body from the rest of the body (sight, hearing, articulation,
etc.). If a stable mother influence is lacking you get instability, mental disorders, tremendous fears, night sweats, epilepsy, very bad
digestion, greasy stools, deafness, hearing problems, epistaxis, pain in the forearm, slow recovery after shock or surgery, MS,
paralysis. Also good for hearing difficulties. When used with BL-62 causes the release of ACTH ad sex hormones [JRW]
Support Structure. Directly affects the Yang of the whole body and the spine as the master of the Du mo, the wood point, and
tonification point. There is a qualitative connection between the whole of the small intestine as the wisdom of the heart and the Du
Mai as the individual and their uprightness. The Du Mai is one of the first and fundamental structures which develop in the body,
serving as the foundation and focal point of neurological development, commanding the Yang aspect of the body and mind. The
proper development of this channel and the spine are necessary for the body to serve as a vehicle for spirit. Our parents and role
models establish much of what becomes the structure of our life, the background from which we discriminate what is important
and what is not. An imbalanced small intestine has difficulty sorting things out for themselves, knowing what to believe in, or
standing up for themselves. Wood is essential for fire. The quality of wood is important we must be who and what we are. Stability
requires balance; a deficiency here puts the whole structure in danger. If fire is buried under ashes, the small intestine cannot function;
one may not be able to see what is happening, there may be a lack of effort to discriminate. These kind of people need shaking up
to get them out of their stupor.

Psycho-Spiritual Components
A safe and beautiful point to use. Good with LI-4 to throw off waste and assist the small intestine to adjust, be
flexible, and turn ones hand to anything. The wrist is very flexible: it lets us give out and take in, and it allows us
to be creative. This point has to do with contacting the outside world. Through it we can take in nurture, be
flexible, and operate. When this point is stuck we cannot reach out and touch, or our eyes may be stuck. Gives
structure and stability to the small intestine to reach out, helping relationships. The small intestine needs some kind
of structure to perform its functions and the use of the word bone in the name is an indication that this point can be
used to find that proper structure. When the small intestine is stuck we are not able to reach out, the capacity to
touch, see, communicate can be affected. The source point can be used to balance the function of an element by
getting some energy from the origin, the source of the element [JRW]
As the fourth point on the channel, this indicates that the point can be used to find proper structure, this structure
should be flexible (like a healthy wrist), allowing creative movement in all directions. The correspondence of the
small intestine and the Du Mai suggests an application for improving spinal articulation, and through the relationship
with secretions (synovial fluid, etc.), this point may help joint problems. When the small intestine is in trouble, this
affects our exchange with others, relationships with others, and the expression of feelings, etc. This point helps with
problems of speaking ones mind, expressing feelings, digesting experience, and the third chakra. As the
source point of the small intestine, this can be used o confirm the function of the small intestine by tapping into the
holographic design. Also treats gallbladder related digestive conditions, especially those that are chronic. [ALHIM]

Stimulates and shakes up the fire and gets rid of the ashes so that the small intestine can sort effectively. Yang
Vitality. Where the fire draws on the ire which is it's store of energies. Clarifies the heart of the fire, building up
the spiritual flame. Adjusts the fire to burn appropriately. Good to moxa if the patient craves warmth. Good if
the patient is weak, dispirited, despairing, or unable to cope. As a horary point, it is less crucial to use during
horary time. Instability in the emotions, mind out of control, stuttering, stammering, excessive talking,
flies into a rage. Fire raging out of control... Fire coered with dead ashes, suppression of fire, no room to
breath, dizziness, fainting, dyspnea, intercostal neuralgia. [JRW]
Puts the laboratory back in order when both the heart and mind are in trouble. Strongly affects the powers of
discrimination. When there is instability in the mind and body, when the mind is out of control, when feeling
of being under attack, and unable to grasp the possibilities and opportunities present in life. Yang tends to
excess conditions, which manifest with the small intestine as emotional agitation, exces heat. Yang valley is a
place for controlling the heat, directing it, nourishing the spirit. When fire is raging out of control: delirium,
rage. When illness disturbs the fire element: febrile diseases, fear and agitation in children, mania and
depression, restlessness and anxiety, moving blindly without direction, paranoia, giddiness, excessive or
inappropriate laughing, loquacity, etc. As the fifth point on the channel, there is an association to the heart,
regeneration, the pentagon, and the dodecahedron (12 pentagons enclose three-dimensional space as a
dodecahedron). [ALHIM]

Psycho-Spiritual Components
One of the best points to nourish the body, mind, and spirit. Especially good with older patients who dont seem like
theyre getting nourishment. Brings in purity from a spirit level, easing small intestine-type cynicism. Useful for the
person who wells on the past, old problems, illnesses, or difficult times. They may not want to cope with the present,
may have mental despair, depression, suicidal tendencies. Use this point to ask for help from the small intestine to
nourish the person with long standing problems. Someone may be immature about coping, in a rut, and never able to
solve problems. Perhaps a difficulty that someone cannot sort out a problem they have had since childhood. Age is a
condition of the body/mind not calendar years. Follow with the wood point so the person can see they dont need his
block and that they can get rid of it and start to grow again. As an accumulation point, this cleanses and strengthens
the small intestine especially for chronic physical problems, such as toxicity and digestive difficulties. Continual battle
against disease can bring complete lethargy, paralysis of the limbs, I feel as if my arms are breaking, diminished
vitality. Also for long term muddle and confusion [JRW]
As the xi-cleft point, Yang Luo excels at clearing stagnation from the small intestine official. This point may be thought
of as aiding the small intestine to clear off the accretions of habituating influence that have smothered the fires of the heart
and ming men. This is equivalent to re-invigorating the alchemists fire so that it may burn off the ashes that have
smothered it. By assisting the small intestine to sort out the old and assimilate the new, bitterness and pain remaining
from past experiences may be integrated and released, the stagnation that results from the small intestines imbalance
may lead to lethargy and ultimately paralysis of the arms and legs, rendering one literally unable to sort things out. After
receiving this point in treatment, patients may report dreaming about people and places that they had long ago
forgotten. Further, one may experience memories or sensations such as smells that remind them of past places and
people. [LJ]
To die at the right time, and die consciously means to live each moment fully and without attachment. Age can be a
source of wisdom or a condition of decrepitude. The greatest enemies on the path of self perfection are doubt and selfpity. The child in their innocence and the sage in their wisdom are the same in respect to the way they live a natural
relationship with the universe. Through the cultivation of consciousness, the sage achieves insight and understanding of
the true nature of the evolving universe. When we are unwilling or unable to make the efforts required, we begin to
accumulate a burden of unresolved experience this more than anything else causes one to grow old. Those who
know others are intelligent; those who know themselves are enlightened. Those who overcome others have force, those
who master themselves have integrity. Those who know what is enough are wealthy. Those who persevere have direction.
Those who maintain their center endure. Those who die and yet do not perish, live on Dao De Jing Chapter 33 [ALHIM]

Psycho-Spiritual Components
A branch is a connection, between the small intestine and the heart. The heart is the sovereign, the natural correctness and
uprightness of our spiritual being. Unite the powers of the heart to small intestine we cannot separate the pure from the
impure, the true from the false, if we are not in alignment with our heart. Summoning aid from the central force, aligns us
with our truth, increases heart integrity, conveys the intentions of the heart to the world. This point can be used with
HT-5 to balance the heart and small intestine when heir pulse qualities are dissimilar. An inability to discriminate in
matters of feeling and communication. A branch connects and separates heaven and earth. Gives support and balance
to someone who leans to the side, when the head is not upright, the neck is blocked or has little rotation, or when
the patient is not in his head. Affects the thyroid and endocrine systems. Headache, psychopathic apprehension,
lack of secretions, digestive weakness, lack of energy, forearms and shoulders subject to spasm, inability to grasp or hold
an object, not capable of bending or stretching, swollen throat, intermittent fevers, vertigo, extremely red face, crust on
eyelid [JRW]
This is the luo point that adds connection, empowering the quality of communication between the heart as sovereign and
its minister, the small intestine. Without this upright communication, the quality of the hearts capacity to rule may
suffer. This point supports the upright function of the small intestine in conveying the hearts intention to the world. I
have found this point useful for bitterness, frustration, and sarcasm that results when an individual feels that they
are not being understood or truly appreciated. [LJ]
Heart Correspondence. The heart is the center, the truth, the natural correctness ad uprightness of our spiritual being. It
is necessary to unite the powers of the heart with the small intestine. Zheng is the authenticity of the heart, the first
principle and correspondence. Encouraging one to stand upright in oneself, receives the support of the heart in the
process of making choices. Draws energy into the small intestine from the heart. As the alchemist would say, To make
gold, one must begin with gold. If this connection is broken, there may be debilitating decline of the nervous
system, hyper-excited states, insanity, fears, dizziness, shock (recoil of energy from intense feelings), emptiness,
depression, sorrow regrets, SI-7 is good for building psychological balance and integrity. Has a calming effect on
the emotions. [ALHIM]

Psycho-Spiritual Components
As an earth point, gives a solid base and grounding. A fire that is not grounded burns erratically and eventually
peters out. When a person is hyper-active or hyper-reactive, help them to find center. Earth within fire is very
important as it establishes a foundation for the fire. Everything grows from the earth, in ancient Chinese texts
the earth was spoken of as the center for this reason. If the earth within fire is lacking there will be dulling of
the senses: touch, taste, smell, sight, hearing the experience of earth, the form of experience is dulled.
This sea is also important as a primordial source. Affects the ability of the Spleen to carry away nourishment
from the small intestine, and affects the ability of the stomach to deliver rotten material for separation. [JRW]

The strongest point on the small intestine meridian, for people who have an inability to sort, their mind is
clogged up. When you want to cleanse out the mind, clear chaos and mental confusion, this point will do
that and bring tranquility. One of the deepest reaching points on the small intestine to cleanse the body, mind
and spirit. Puts one in touch with their elders and betters who have dealt with problems in the past and
know all about them, brings in a great source of wisdom. Helps someone to sort out problems in the past and
know all about them, brings in a great source of wisdom. Helps someone to sort out problems when one cannot
cope with having a window opened. Powerful at the spirit level, when one has trouble with separation. Similar
to SI-6, but more powerful amazing when these points are used together. A good point for small intestine
imbalance induced form tensions, tiredness, mental fatigue, draws from a deeper source of energy. [JRW]
In Zhuang-zi, the ancestor of the human race is represented as emperor HunTun , which may be translated as
chaos. In a world born of chaos, human life is often a struggle for meaning. People grasp at concepts for
meaning as one caught in a whirlpool may hold momentarily onto a passing branch. The stability afforded by
belief is fleeting, as concepts are continually swept away by the flood of the Daos rising waters. The sages
journey into the heart is one of aiming toward, but never fully arriving at the destination. Wisdom emerges
when one has finally made peace with ones fundamental inability to know. Tian Zong brings the wisdom
of the heavenly ancestor to the sorting process. In the chaotic unity of heaven, all is one and there is
nothing to sort out. For a patient who is troubled in the process of sorting, this point may empower the
emergence of the hearts wisdom. [LJ]

Where there is confusion, this helps one to see that things can be sorted out, allowing everything to be clear and
fall into place. The small intestine can become cluttered, confused, frustrated, and completely powerless. When
the window is clean, the clarifying light comes in. There can be no purity is there is no light. This occurs if the
window is dirty. The official gets frustrated if he sees only impurity. Take him to the light of the window
so that he can look out and become enlightened. The heavenly window enables you to see your god. Use
before SI-17; it is very unusual to use them both in the same treatment. Neck problems, slowness, lethargy.
[JRW]
As a Window of the Sky Point, SI-16 provides clarity on a deep spiritual level to aid in the sorting process. In
my experience, window points are some of the strongest points for correcting deviations between the heart and
mind, thus reducing habituated behavior. [LJ]
The value of anything depends on what the standard is. Heaven is the holy absolute, the ultimate measure of
value. Once the standard is clear, the chaos also clears. Enlightenment is an alchemical transformation where
there is light, darkness disappears. Connects the heart with the head. For patients who feel overloaded with
information and feel depressed, or confused, because they lack the time and peace of mind to digest the
information. 61.61.22 [ALHIM]

Psycho-Spiritual Components
A wonderful window to open to allow the official to separate the pure from the impure in the mind and spirit.
Someone may appear physically fine with this separation process, but you may see tremendous confusion or
pollution on a mental or spiritual level. Enhances, clears out, and clarifies the mind, body and spirit. Helps
one to see that they are not on their own anymore. Takes one to a different place, to where they can see and
do something with it. Bridges the official into unity and oneness. Empowers the patient to move on. If used
with SI-16, the heavens may truly appear to the patient, or one may get a glimpse of their own soul and
knowledge that there is indeed a god. [JRW]
This is a Window of the Sky Point. It is somewhat stronger than SI-16. Rather than merely providing a
glimpse through a window, this point makes the decree to heaven manifest. [LJ]

Palace is used with a great deal of reverence. It is the abode of the emperor or god. This point is not just concerned with
physical hearing. A person may not be able to hear mentally or spiritually; the sounds penetrate no further than the
physical ear. Opens a person up so that what you are saying is heard and reaches them at a mental and spiritual
level, beyond just the sounds. Allows you to go into the depth, to the palace of the emperor, communication with god.
[JRW]
The function of SI-19 is archetypal of the relationship between the heart and small intestine officials Te character ting
(listen) is etymologically related to the character de, which means virtue and has undertones suggesting the power of
intuition. From the imagery of the character ting, the ability to listen may be defined as the ability to hear ones heart and
the heart of others without deviation. One who is listening in this manner is able to immediately know the nature of
things in ones heart, directly bypassing the analytical faculties of the mind. In addition to BL-1, I have found this point,
located next to the sensory orifices, to be one of the most powerful points for empowering accurate perception of
reality as it occurs both internally and externally in life.
Dont listen with your ears. Listen with your mind. No, dont listen with your mind, but listen with your spirit. Listening
stops with the ears, the mind stops with recognition, but spirit is empty and waits on all things. The way gathers in
emptiness alone. Emptiness is the fasting of the mind. Zhuan Zi
The pint SI-19, translated as Listening Palace, is etymologically related to characters [that are] both pronounced de, which
refers to the rectitude of the heart and original nature. The character ting (listen) is composed of the character which
stands for the rectitude of the heart (de) combined with that for the ear (erh) of the disciple who is listening attentively.
The overall sense imparted by this character is that, through attentive listening, ones heart may be rectified. The character
gong designates the imperial private residence from the Qin dynasty. This allusion to the emperor places further emphasis
on the relationship between listening and the heart official, who is emperor of the body/mind/spiritListening Palace
provides a functional link between the small intestine and heart officials via the aspect of being termed listening. The
small intestine is like the emperors (hearts) closest minister. Its functions are to relay to the emperor (heart official) the
essence of what is going on in the nation. When the quality of energy addressed by this point is unbalanced in a patients
being, he may exhibit confusion resulting from the inability to sort out what is within his heart or what is within the
hearts of others. It may appear that they do not hear accurately what is said to him. Conversely, he may not be able to
hear clearly the truth within his own heart. In balance, the function of this point may allow a person to listen in a way
that connects him or her to the heart of another regardless f what is being said. SI-19 assists the patient in
cultivating virtue by looking and listening to the heart of life. Lastly, as practitioners we should not overlook the
possibility that attentive listening on our part may lead to the healing of anothers heart. [LJ]
