pancakes. Chocolate chip pancakes the favored flavor at
the St. Peter Lutheran Church Kids Breakfast offered every
weekday from 8-9 a.m. beginning Monday through August.
When the program started in 2010, Coordinator Sue
McGue and her crew were serving an average of three kids
a day. In 2015, June saw 60-70 kids per day, July 40-50 and
August 30-40.
I talked to someone else who ran a similar program at
their church and they told me to not give up and not base the
success of the program on the first year, McGue said. Im
glad we kept it going because theres obviously a need.
On top of breakfast which includes plain, blueberry
and chocolate chip pancakes, juice and milk and occasionally eggs and bacon visitors also receive a sack lunch to
take with them when they leave, an added bonus the church
began offering in 2014. The kids fill out a form requesting
their choice of breakfast and, at the same time, what theyd
like for lunch.

Local/State
Failure to yield caused
49,000 crashes in 2015
Information submitted
LIMA Motorists that
dont yield for other vehicles
in the right-of-way cause far
too many crashes in Ohio
each year. Crashes caused
by this violation, known as
failure to yield or FTY, rose
in 2015; total FTY crashes
increased 9 percent compared
to 2014, and fatal FTY crashes increased 28 percent.
Its even more troubling
that these tend to be more

severe than crashes of other

causes. Thirty-six percent
of FTY crashes resulted in
deaths or injuries in 2015,
compared to 25 percent of
all crashes. In total, 49,473
crashes on Ohio roadways
occurred when the at-fault
driver failed to yield, resulting in 206 deaths and 28,857
injuries.
The Ohio State Highway
Patrol is asking motorists to
pay attention to which vehicles have the right-of- way

and yield to them. Troopers

wrote 23,623 citations that
included an FTY violation
last year and will continue
enforcing the law to make
Ohio roads safer.
Traffic can be frustrating,
but thats no excuse to endanger yourself and other drivers, said Lt. David Brown,
Lima Post Commander. Its
always best for all motorists
to remain calm and yield for
other vehicles that have the
right-of-way.

to the 600 block of North Bredeick Street
to investigate a domestic dispute. Officers
spoke with a male and female that reside
at the residence and gave them a warning
for creating a disturbance. There were no
threats made and no physical violence
therefore no charges will be pursued.
On Wednesday, officers spoke with a
male in the 400 block of South Jefferson
Street. The male told officers that his
sons bicycle was stolen while parked at
Jefferson High School. Officers received a
description of the bicycle and the incident
remains under investigation.
On Wednesday, officers took a report
from a complainant whose sons cell phone
was stolen from a business on North Street.
The cell phone was located and returned to
the complainant.
On Wednesday, officers responded to a
breaking and entering complaint at a business in the 300 block of North Main Street.
Officers arrived and conducted a building
search before speaking with the complainant. Officers then viewed the video
footage from the surveillance camera and
were able to identify a juvenile suspect.
The juvenile was seen pulling open a
locked door and looking in, but never
entered the building. Due to damage being
done to the door, the juveniles probation
officer was advised of the incident. The
juvenile was given community service by
his probation officer.

Corn seed development

BY JAMES
HOORMAN
Ag Educator
OSU Extension
Putnam County

Most of the corn has

been planted in the area by
this time. The corn seed is
quite a miracle, being only
slightly more than a half
inch in length and width
and has the ability to produce a six-foot plant, 18 to
20 leaves, one or more ears
with 500 to 1000 kernels
and .4 to .6 pounds of seed.
Each corn seed has the
cells and nutrients for the
first six leaves and the first
root system. This nutrient
package has enough energy and minerals to sustain a young corn seedling
for 3-4 weeks after germination. This corn seed
consists of three parts: a
pericarp, endosperm, and
embryo. The pericarp is
the seedcoat, which protects the seed from attacking soil fungi and bacteria.
The endosperm is mainly
starch, proteins, and oils
and provides the new plant
food and energy until the
permanent roots become
fully functional about four

weeks after germination.

The embryo has all the cells
that will become the first
six leaves and the seedling
root system.
The seed starts germinating when it has detected
the proper levels of moisture, temperature and oxygen and may begin within
two days. The root system
is the first part of the seed
to emerge in the germination process starting with
the radicle. The seedling
root system anchors the
plant and provides water
while the endosperm provides nutrients.

The growing shoot will

be pushed to the soil surface by a structure called
the mesocotyl, which will
continue to elongate until
the shoot is exposed to sunlight. Sunlight will then
trigger hormones that will
stop mesocotyl elongation
and develop the crown or
hub, which will form about
three quarters to one inch
below the soil surface at the
top of the mesocotyl,
Farmers may estimate
the time of emergence by
counting growing degree
days. Agronomists have
determined that the corn
plant will require about 120
growing degree days after
planting to emerge with
adequate soil moisture and
other needed germination

requirements. This year,

any corn planted May 25 or
earlier should be emerged
since it has accumulated
more than 120 growing
degree days.
To determine the number
of growing degrees for each
day, take the average of the
high and low temperature
for the day and subtract 50.
Since the corn plant grows
between 50 and 86F, count
any daily high temperature
above 86 as 86 for the high
and any low temperature
below 50 as 50 for the
daily low. Add the growing degrees for each day to
determine the accumulated
growing degree days.

It is 6:42 a.m. and our three youngest just left with the bus for another
day at school. They are counting the
days left of this term. Eight and onehalf days left! I still have a hard time
getting used to the bus coming this
early. All the years our children went
to school the bus was never here until
7:00 a.m. or a little after. Changes are
hard to get used to in our lives!
Talking about changes in life. Our
family will have another change and
Ill probably have the hardest time
with it. On the other hand, Im excited and happy for daughter Susan, 20,
and her special friend, Mose. They
were published in church this past
Sunday to announce their wedding
date. They picked Friday, August 5,
for their special day. Mose and Susan
have been dating for four years and
we have no doubt in our minds that
he will be a good husband to our
daughter. He seems like my own son
and I hope that never changes. It is so
much easier on a couple if both families accept the life partner of their
family member. May God bless their
marriage and grant them many happy,
healthy years together!
With the wedding coming up I
see busy months ahead! We will be
more organized than with Elizabeth
and Timothys wedding. We were in
the process of putting up a pole barn
last year which delayed all the other
work.
Susans dress for the wedding is
mostly finished. The rest of ours are
cut out but still waiting to be sewn.
That is what I plan to do the next few

evening together!
On Thursday we traveled to Berne,
Ind., to brother Amos and Nancys
house for the wedding of their daughter Lovina and Benjamin. They had
a very nice day! On the menu were
fried chicken, mashed potatoes,
gravy, noodles, dressing, mixed vegetables, lettuce salad, sliced cheese,
homemade bread, butter and rhubarb
jam. Also pies (rhubarb, blueberry,
cherry, and pecan), tapioca pudding,
angel food cake, fruit cocktail dessert, and of course nothings were
on all the tables. Sausage was added
in the evening. It was nice to see a lot
of family again.
On a sadder note; Friday, May
20, brought memories of the passing
of my dear father, Ben Coblentz, 16
years ago. How nice it would be to
have my parents at all their grandchildrens weddings. Gods ways are not
our ways so we need to accept what
He sends to us.
I must get busy. I love sewing but
its different if you have a deadline to
get things done. It kind of takes away
the enjoyment, but we will take one
day at a time. Gods blessings!
Fruit Cocktail Dessert
1 15-ounce can fruit cocktail
1 3-ounce package apricot Jell-O
1 3-ounce package vanilla pudding

and cool; add fruit cocktail.

days.
I feel better to sew now since our
whole garden was planted Saturday.
We are enjoying radishes and green
onions from the early things we planted. Mose and his brother Freeman
assisted us with our work on Saturday.
The pole barn was organized and
cleaned up. When it gets closer to the
wedding we want to wash down the
walls and ceilings on both sides of the
pole barn. We will set tables in both
sides and open the garage door thats
in the middle. Mose and daughters
Susan and Verena planted flowers in
my flower beds. We put out 68 tomato
plants. With everyones help the garden was quickly filled. Now its up
to our good Lord to provide sunshine
and rain to make things grow. Some
years we have a bountiful crop and
others not much but we want to take
what He sends.
On Sunday, May 22, I also turned
another year older. We had communion services at sister Emma and
Jacobs house. After the services were
over everyone sang Happy Birthday
to me and sister Emma brought out a
cake with candles. Luckily she only
had a four and five for candles. I
dont know if I could have handled
blowing out 45 candles. Emma sent
the cake home with me. We had it for
supper with our children. The children went after pizza in town and they
grilled hot wings so I wouldnt have

Mangas sets state mark; Diller also cops title

Columbus Grove senior Lynea Diller watches after unleashing the discus while clinching
a Division III State title in that event Friday afternoon; she also grabbed a third in the
shot put. (DHI Media/Charlie Warnimont)

COLUMBUS - Ottovilles
Brooke Mangas has tried
several times to break the
Division III state record in
the high jump.
While each previous
attempt came up a little short.
Friday on the big stage at
the Division III state track
and field meet, the Ottoville
junior finally accomplished
her goal of breaking the state
record in the girls high jump.
Mangas not only repeated her championship in the

high jump, but broke the state

record twice.
While Mangas had many
eyes on her while breaking
the state record, several other
local athletes were doing quite
well in making the podium
on the first day of the 2016
state track and field meet at
Ohio State Universitys Jesse
Owens Memorial Stadium on
a warm Friday afternoon.
Mangas has tried several times to break the state
record, unsuccessfully. After
winning the high jump title
at 5-8, Mangas attempted 5-9
1/4 and cleared it on her first
attempt to break the 2003

state record of 5-9 held by

Anna Marrie Ricciardi of
Western Reserve. Moments
later, Mangas attempted 5-10
and cleared that on her second attempt to increase her
state record. Three attempts
at 5-11 were unsuccessful.
This was probably my
fifth attempt at the record.
Ive jumped it a lot. I was
getting tired of trying to
clear it, Mangas joked. I
think the atmosphere helped,
knowing this is your last
meet of the year; lets make
a statement and try to get it.
There was a little pressure,
but its mostly in your head;

you just have to do what you

can and hopefully come out
on top of it.
Mangas will have a
chance at a second medal
this morning as Ottovilles
1,600 Relay team of Lindsay
Schweller, Madison Knodell,
Alicia Honigford and Mangas
had the ninth best time after
Friday mornings semifinals
running a 4:05.38.
Mangas was not the lone
champion from the area as
Columbus Grove senior
Lynea Diller captured a
Division III championship
in the discus. The future
Buckeye unleashed a throw
of 159-6 to win the event
by nearly 13 feet. Diller had
the lead going into her final
throw but was able to get a
personal best throw to end
her high school career in that
event.
The state championship
was something Diller had
been striving for since a runner-up finish in this event
last year.
I got it, an excited Diller
said. Ive been working for
this since my freshman year.
Knowing I accomplished my
one main goal shows me how
blessed I am and how blessed I am to have the family
support behind me. Big Rick
(Maag), my throwing coach,
has done so much for me and
without him I would definitely not have been on top of the
podium today. It wasnt the
160 I was hoping for, but to
be a state champion is a great
feeling.
Later in the afternoon
Diller competed in the shot
put and finished third with
a top throw of 43-11 1/4.
McComb junior Molly
Leppelmeier won the shot put
with a toss of 46-9, which
came on her last throw of the
competition.

Pugh, a senior, had an
outstanding day in the shot

best for Pugh, which came on

Throwing the best throw

Roney, a junior, finished

The two reversed positions on the podium for the

Pugh was fifth at 153-11.
Matthew Lamb, Sandusky St.

throw of 169-10.
I was throwing pretty
good, Roney said. Its the
best I have thrown in probably a month. It was nice to

I have a lot of work to do in
the off-season and hopefully
it all pays off in the end.

VAN WERT Pitching and defense.
Both St. Johns and Van Wert had both in spades, committing no errors between them and yielding a combined eight
hits and three bases-on-balls in their ACME Summer Baseball
encounter.
The Blue Jays opened their season by getting one crucial
run by playing small-ball to the nth degree in the sixth frame
in a 1-0 dandy on Russell Fisher Field inside Smiley Park in
Van Wert.
The Jays also turned a pair of double plays.
With both pitching staffs throwing up goose-eggs for five
frames, the Jays broke through in the top of the sixth. Troy
Schwinnen legged out a slow roller to shortstop against Cougar
complete-game right-hander Lawson Blackmore (2 hits, 1
walk, 8 strikeouts; 91 pitches, 58 for strikes), stole second,
advanced to third on Adam Gerkers grounder to first, then
scored as Carter Teman executed a sacrifice bunt; when third
sacker Holden Willingham went to first, Schwinnen tore for
home and beat the relay from Nathan Temple.
Van Wert (1-3) tried to answer in the home half with one
down against Jays reliever Troy Elwer, in his third inning
of work. John Lee singled to right and stole second. Darius
Eddins walked; both burgled a base with two outs but no closer
as Blackmore flied out to centerfielder Schwinnen.
Josh Warnecke came on in the bottom of the seventh to
try and slam the door. With one down, Willingham blooped a
single to right and Tristen Wehner walked. An out later, James
Acquaviva forced Willingham at third to end the game.

Panthers sweep Cougs

VANWERT The Van

Wert Cougars welcomed the
Paulding Panthers to Russell
Fisher Field at Smiley Park
for a twin-billing of ACME
baseball on Thursday night.
The Panthers picked up a
2-1 victory in game one and
Paulding used a big seventh
inning to sweep the series,
winning 12-6 in game two.
Game one was a classic
pitchers duel as Caleb Fetzer
took the rubber for Van Wert
and Preston Johanns started
for Paulding.
Both pitchers held the
other team scoreless for the
initial three innings.
In the top of the fourth,
Johanns lead the frame off
with a double to right field
and Cade McGarvey would
bring Johanns home with an
RBI single to give Paulding
a 1-0 lead.
Van Wert countered in

the bottom of the fourth as

Lawson Blackmore walked
and stole second base before
scoring on an RBI single off
the bat of Connor Army to tie
the game at 1-1.
The Panthers led off the
top of the fifth with a walk
from Lupe Martinez. The
next batter, Jaret Miller, laid
down a bunt to put Martinez
in scoring position. After a
passed ball moved Martinez
just 90 feet from home plate,
Cameron Doster hit a deep
fly ball to center field which
Van Werts John Lee caught
and Martinez raced home to
give the Panthers back the
lead at 2-1.
In game two of the doubleheader, the Panthers got their
offense going in the third
frame with two outs as Doster
tripled and Johanns singled
to plate the games first run.
Paulding would score two
more runs, in part due to two
errors by the Van Wert outfield, to make it 3-0 Paulding.

Wildcats pound out 13-2 win

ACME Summer Baseball is
a chance for coaches to see
who will step up and replace

The Jays did not touch Blackmore until two down in

The Jays really helped themselves in the bottom half. With

a bunt single to first; pinch-runner Storm Pierce hustled to
third. Then the Jays turned a most unusual double play: Chiles
took off for second and was gunned down by catcher Buddy
Jackson, then Corey Koverman relayed the orb back to Jackson
at home to nab Pierce for an inning-ending double play.

Knight tops Lancers

in ACME tussle
BY NICK JOHNSON

CONVOY The Crestview Knights and Lincolnview

Lancers renewed their cross-county rival on Wednesday night
as both boys team faced off in ACME baseball action at the
Crestview Athletic Complex.
The Knights won bragging right over the Lancers with a
9-1 victory.
The Knights opened the bottom of the first with two runs as
Zech Simerman walked and Spencer Rolsten reached via hit by
pitch. Caden Hurless walked to load the bases and then Luke
Gerardot flied out to Lincolnview centerfielder Thad Walker to
bring home the first run on the game. Rolsten later scored on a
Lancer throwing error as the Knights took a 2-0 lead.
The Lancers (0-2) got a run back in the top of the second as
Walker walked and stole second to give the Lancers a runner
in scoring position. One batter later, Braden Evans singled
to right field to put runners at the corners. Sam Myers then
reached on a Crestview error, which brought home the only
Lincolnview run of the game.
Lancer pitcher Jaden Youtsey got in a groove in the second
and third frames as he retired six straight Knights, with four of
them via punch out.
In the bottom of the fourth, however, Knights shortstop
Rolsten flashed some power as he smashed a ball to the rightfield fence for a triple. Hurless walked to put runners on the
corners. Gerardot picked up his second RBI of the game,
this time with a single. Payton Knittle also got an RBI with
a groundout to Lincolnview third baseman Thad Carter, 5-1
Knights.
The Knights (1-1) added some runs on in the bottom of
the fifth as Brett Schumm walked and then Brant Richardson
tripled to deep right field to bring home Schumm. Simerman
picked up an RBI with a squeeze bunt and Crestview had a 7-1
lead. The Knights picked up the final two runs of the game
with back-to-back RBI doubles Jacob Painter and Dylan Hicks.
Hurless started (on the mound) tonight; he kind of
struggled a little bit at the start but battled through it, then
Simerman and Camp came in and did a nice job to finish up,
said Crestview coach Kent McClure. Our bats did a nice job,
but its early in the season - we have a lot of young kids and a
couple spots to fill.
I thought we did our part I counted only four strikeouts
so we put the ball in play they just made plays, Lincolnview
head coach Nik Leeth said. A lot of this summer we are going
to try and find out where guys are going to play this spring. Its
just going to be a learning experience with a lot of reps with
guys at new positions.

we were able to put some

VAN WERT No time of the baseball season is a good one for giving up
free passes.
Jeffersons pitching staff learned that
lesson well.
Three hurlers ceded eight walks
Wednesday evening at Smiley Parks
Russell Fisher Field and that led Van
Wert to an 11-1 5-inning rout in ACME
summer baseball.
The Wildcats (1-2) also committed
seven wild pitches and a passed ball.
The Cougars got a good pitching
performance from Holden Willingham,
giving up a pair of hits, one base-onballs, one hit batter and one earned run.
He fanned five.
The Wildcats got their only run in the
top of the first. With one down, Jacob
Boop secured the walk. He was forced
at second by Jace Stockwell, who stole
second and scored on Jacob Pulfords
line single to right center.
Van Wert took the lead for good in the
home half against lefty starter Pulford.
With one down, Johnathan Lee walked
and advanced on a wild pitch. When
Caleb Fetzer walked, a wild pitch put
runners at second and third and two
more wild pitches scored both runs.
Lawson Blackmore walked with two
down but was picked off base by Pulford

Jefferson made it 6-0 in
the fourth. With one gone,
Brenan Auer walked, stole

Connor Anspach walked,
Jacob Boop was hit by a
pitch to load them up and
Jordan Boop lashed a single

Delphos tried to answer in the upper
third. With one down, Andrew Foust
grounded a hard single into center and
advanced on a 2-out error on Boops

Van Wert netted three more runs in
the home third. Kobe Palmer walked and
an out later, Lee walked. Both scored as
Fetzer was safe on a 3-base throwing
error. He eventually scored on a wild
pitch for a 5-1 edge. Blackmore doubled
with two outs but remained stranded.
Jefferson again tried to retaliate in
the top of the fourth. Pulford was hit by
a pitch and was safe on a 1-out error on
Tyler Schriders ground ball. However,
both runners remained on base.
The Cougars blew it open with a
5-run fourth. Chiles walked and Tristen
Wehner ripped a hit to left. Palmers sacrifice bunt resulted in a a 2-base throwing error and Chiles scoring. Wehner
was caught too far off third on Mason

We got a lot of turnover
and a lot of young inexperienced guys who are going to
take some time getting used

First Dads: parenting and politics from
George Washington to Barack Obama by
Joshua Kendall
Every president has
had some experience as
a parent. Of the 43 men
who have served in the
nations highest office, 38
have fathered biological
children and the other five
adopted children. Each
presidents
parenting
style reveals much about
his beliefs as well as his
psychological make-up.
James Garfield enjoyed
jumping on the bed with
his kids. FDRs children,
on the other hand, had to
make appointments to talk
to him. In a lively narrative, based on research in
archives around the country, Kendall shows
presidential character in action. Readers
will learn which type of parent might be
best suited to leading the American people
and, finally, how the fathering experiences
of our presidents have forever changed the
course of American history.
God Gave Me You: A True Story of
Love, Loss and a Heaven-Sent Miracle by
Tricia Seaman and Diane Nichols
When a single mother with terminal cancer asks an oncology nurse to look after her
son, neither can imagine what God has in
store. This is the heartwarming story of how
two very different women with two very
different paths were brought together for
one very special purpose. Oncology nurse
Tricia Seaman and her family were hoping to adopt a son. They were months into
the grueling process when she met Trish
Somers, a terminally ill cancer patient.
Trish was a single mother and her eightyear-old son Wesley was her entire world.
As the young mother poured out her fears
and emotions, it became clear that this was
unlike any other nurse-patient relationship
Tricia had in her career. When they learned
that the cancer had spread and Trish only
had a short time to live, she looked at
Tricia, a complete stranger three weeks ago,
and asked if she could raise Wesley when
she passed away. God Gave Me You tells
the true story of how these two incredible
mothers met, the immediate bond they

formed, and the ups and downs of joining

families as Trishs earthly life ebbed away.
This heartwarming tale inspires readers to
find the courage to trust in faith and never
give up. The miracle of these two families
coming together demonstrates that family
isnt always blood; often, its made up of
the people God gives you if you have a willing heart. God Gave Me You is a story you
can turn to again and again when youre
looking for hope, inspiration, and a reason
to believe in miracles

Prayers the devil answers by Sharyn
McCrumb
The author explores the ties between a
reluctant female sheriff and a condemned
man in this stunning and powerfully written
Depression-era novel. Years later, after the
tragedy, someone remembered the Dumb
Supper and what had happened there. That
was the cause of it, they said, because the
ritual wasnt a game after all. It really was
magic, but magic has rules, and she broke
them. Suddenly thrust into the role of primary caretaker for her family following the
tragic death of her husband, Ellie Robbins
is appointed to serve out his term as sheriff
of their rural Tennessee mountain town. The
year is 1936, and her role is largely symbolic, except for the one task
that only a sheriff can do:
execute a convicted prisoner. Ellie has long proven she can handle herself.
But becoming sheriff is
altogether different, and
the demands of the role
are even more challenging when she is forced to
combat societys expectations for a woman. Soon
enough, dark secrets
come to light, and Ellie
must grapple with small
town superstitions and the
tenuous ties she shares
with a condemned killer
as she carves out a place
for herself in an uncertain
future.

Why I
Relay
The Relay for Life is going be a
bit different this year. A move from
Jefferson High School to Stadium
Park has opened a lot of possibilities
for activities.
There are many reasons why I
participate in the Relay for Life. The
first and most important is because I
truly believe that research is the way
to beat cancer. I know there are many
people who could use help with medical bills, gas, food and lodging when
a family is struck by this disease. The
money raised at the Relay each year
would hardly touch those medical
bills for one person. However, you
never know which dollar is going to
find the cure for a cancer and make
those hospital bills and other expenses unnecessary for anyone.
Another reason I relay is because
I have lost family members to this
enemy of mankind. My father was
taken 18 years ago and my aunt soon

Nancy Spencer

On the
Other Hand

followed. They had different types of

cancer but suffered much the same.
Its hard to let them go but even harder to ask them to stay when they are
so tired and in pain. I was by each of
their bedsides when they took that
final breath. It was heartbreaking to
see strong, once vibrant people taken
in such a manner.
The first question is always why?
Why my dad? Why my aunt? Why?
Until we find a cure, it will be why
not. Until we find a cure, it will be
our friends and loved ones and US
who battle this disease with our bodies.
I dont know anyone who hasnt
been touched by cancer. Its a disease that doesnt distinguish between
race, gender or creed. No one is safe.
I know people who have lived their
lives exercising and eating right and
taking every precaution who get cancer. It doesnt care if you are a nice

person or not so much. It doesnt

care if you are going to leave behind
loved ones or those who need you. It
doesnt care that you havent accomplished what you would like in life.
It doesnt care that you are a mother,
father, son, daughter, wife, etc.
Relayers care, though.
We want you to live a long, happy
life. We want you to hold your grandchildren and even great-grandchildren and tell them how we beat
cancer. We want cancer to go down
in the medical books as something
that once killed and maimed many
but no longer exists because people
cared enough to find a cure. I have
seen many survivors hear that dreaded news a second and even third time:
You have cancer.
Wouldnt it be nice to hear other
words? How about, NO MORE
CANCER! Or WE BEAT CANCER!

Soul of summer
right in Van Wert
I have a slip of paper I carry around in my purse with
me every day.
It is a quote I received on a fortune cookie one day
last year, not really a fortune at all I thought it was
suppose to tell me my future, but sometimes you get
some weird ones.
This fortune, however, is the best one I have ever
received in my two short years of eating Chinese food
(I could really make a long story out of this one, but
Ill save your time).
It says, Music is the soul of language.
Ive never read truer words.
I love music. Music can speak volumes with or without words and it amazes me.
I listen to just about everything - country, rock, classical, pop, blues, bluegrass, jazz and the list goes on.
Every genre plays a role in my life whether Im
cranking up hip hop before I head out on a run or
swinging on the porch swing listening to country, it
all adds something to my daily life. It really adds that
emotion, that soul to my every day life.
In my mind, nothing compares to live music. I love
concerts and throughout the summer, I travel, whether
it is down to Main Street or over to Ohio City or to
Cincinnati, just about every weekend to watch some
live music.
When I was in college at Bowling Green State
University, the downtown businesses had live music
every night. I was blessed during this time with the
opportunity to incorporate my love for music with my
love for writing as the music beat writer for the college
newspaper.
I got paid to listen to music, review concerts and
meet bands.

IN
THE
LOOP
By
Erin Cox

The shows were not always great, but the environment a concert brings is one of the best. I would rarely
know the songs as most performers played original
music, but I could still feel the groove and get a little
dance going as the music would just move through me.
Im one of those people who always has to be bopping my head or tapping my foot to the beat much to
my sisters dismay when she joins me at these events;
sometimes it may be more than just a head bop, I mean
some songs just require a full out head bang or cha-cha.
Van Wert might not have live music every night, but
this community is lucky to have high quality bands and
performers here every year much better than my college town bands I covered back in the day (okay, that
wasnt too long ago).
I am excited for this weekend as it marks the beginning of the Fountain Park Music Series. Its the 15th
year for the series!
The live music downtown on Friday nights throughout the summer has become such a staple in our community I think many of us forget that we are truly
blessed to have that. Ohio City also now has live music
on some Friday nights with their Arts in the Park.
We also have the Niswonger Performing Arts Center
who is announcing its 10th season schedule on June 15
and it promises to delight as well.
Then Van Wert also boasts several festivals throughout the summer that brings performers as well like the
Ribfest and the Wetzel Motorcycle Clubs Battle of the
Bands and the main party.
For a music lover who is in search of my soul of
the summer, Van Wert is the place to be and I hope to
see many of you out at the various concerts this summer. I promise to keep my head banging to a minimum.

Letter to
the Editor

DEAR EDITOR:
I saw the numerous flags
around Delphos placed by
the volunteers and decided
to place my desk flag in my
front yard Sunday to do my
part in remembering the veterans.
I went out on Memorial
Day to water my tomatoes and
found that some jokesters
stole my small flag overnight.
The joke was not funny.
Sincerely yours,
Michael Wrasman

Will you translate

this for me?
Its a by-product
Byron McNutt
of our new world. If
you want to talk to
me, or if your company wants to sell
me your products in
this global economy,
you better be able to
communicate with
me and speak my language. Its spawned a
growth industry for a new breed of consultants.
Several weeks ago I read an article in the Wall
Street Journal that said many large companies are now
employing consultants to advise them on how to communicate with their employees and customers when
they have meetings.
The managers feel they need a translator to explain
and decode the various differences between the generations and cultures within their own staffs, let alone
with marketing to their domestic and international customers.
Not only are Americans dealing more and more with
cultural divisions, they are now trying to figure out the
stark differences between baby boomers, Gen Xers,
millennials and the generation that is coming after
them, which hasnt yet been labeled. Its like were
from different planets caught in time travel.
Never has the divide in generations been greater than
it is today. Boomers were born 1946 to 1964, Gen Xers
1961 to 1981 and Gen Y (Millennials) came along 1980
to 2000. Those born after 2000 havent yet been classified yet but they are already developing a style unlike
any other.
In a corporate setting you have workers from three or
four generations. And most likely, they might represent
several nationalities. Managers are finding that it is like
herding cats. They all have different perspectives and
life experiences.
This new challenge is proving to be very perplexing.
Theres race, culture, the generations and the constantly
changing technology that confronts us every five to 10
years. It hasnt been too hard for Gen Xers to replace
baby boomers in the pecking order, but now that millennials are rising in the ranks were finding it necessary to bring in the consultants to act as translators and
mediators.
In the WSJ article, Lindsey Pollak says she is making
a career of being a millennial expert. She tells her corporate clients that millennials expect work to be meaningful, they crave frequent feedback and they despise
voice mail. You either text them or they will ignore you.
Pollak says there is somewhat of a disconnect
between young people, their hopes, goals and expectations, and what companies think young people want.
Pollak sees herself, and her fellow consultants, as
decoders of the millennial movement.
The generations are clashing at every turn. Adding
to the turmoil is the fact technology changes so fast.
Technology changes came relatively slowly for boomers. Now major changes happen every few years. How
are we supposed to keep pace?
Pamela Sandy, a Cleveland-based certified financial
planner, says this about millennials: they are a lot
more aware that money is not the end game. Its a tool
to create the life you want to live.
So, if youre a baby boomer or a Gen Xer, who is
going to be your lifestyle coach and translator as you
interact with young millennials and fresh-faced college
students who dont speak your language? Maybe those
young tech-savvy people will develop an artificial intelligence device to explain it all to us.
*******
I dont know who did it but somebody anointed
companies like Google, Amazon, Facebook, Apple,
Microsoft, Tesla and several dozen other tech visionaries to change everything about the way we will live,
work and play just five and 10 years from now.
Make no qualms about it, the future is going to be
revolutionary. The tech giants are sure they can figure
out what you need to know before you need it. They
will be able to answer your questions before you ask
them.
Compounding our generational divide today is the
fact so many tech companies have mastered the art of
selling consumers products they dont need, dont want
and cant afford. Were such voracious consumers and
were addicted to having every shiny new gadget.
Creative minds are convinced there is nothing that
cant be accomplished when humans put their minds to
the challenge. They say weve only scratched the surface of knowledge. What secrets will they unlock next?
Because of this innovation, in just 10 years, when
you tell your kids and grandkids how you did things
back in 2016 they will look at you with a blank look
on their face. They wont have any mental reference to
what you are saying.
To interact with your kids and grandkids you will
have to forget everything you learned, or remember
from pre-2015 because it will be obsolete. Many of the
things weve done the last 20 years will be relegated to
museums.
The technology powerhouses have gone all in on
artificial intelligence (AI) and virtual reality (VR) and
they have inspired thousands of the most genius engineers and code writers around the world to make AI and
VR to dramatically change our lives. For stubborn baby
boomers like me, there is nothing we can do about it.
For millennials and the generation coming after
them, the future is tomorrow. They want nothing to
do with the way life was pre-2016. Its a new world.
I believe these drastic changes are partly to blame for
todays crazy, divisive turmoil. Proponents believe
these innovations are necessary for future survival as
our communities become global.
Get ready for voice-activated speakers which will be
your virtual assistants using AI technology. The revolution will be led by Google Homes Allo, Amazon Echos
Alexa, Apples Siri and Microsofts Cortana. Theres
also Facebooks Messenger and WhatsApp messaging
apps. Snapchat is also hot now but everything is subject
to change as new technology finds its way to market.

Friday
in Columbus. St. Johns
senior Alisha Anthony, captured her second straight
long-jump title, capping
off a brilliant career in the
event that saw her twice
as the runner-up. Columbus
Grove senior Jenna Oard
set a state pole vault record
at 11 feet, 9 inches in capturing that title Friday.
Kalida had Newark
Catholic pitcher Michael
Taylor in a bit of jam Friday
afternoon. Although the
Wildcats had adjusted once
to Taylor, they were unable
to adjust again. Taylor shut
down the Wildcats uprising
and when his teammates
gave him an insurance run
late, it was all he needed for a 4-2 win in the
semi-finals of the Division
IV Baseball Tournament in
Columbus. Kalida saw its
season end at 19-8.

only the bench rest scope
was shot. In this event, the
first-place winner was Ken

an associate pastor here in
1975 and 1976. The Rev.
Badger assumed the pastorate at St. Johns June

For some people, the
idea of running a 400-meter
race in a state track meet is
an exciting prospect. But
training for this sub-minute
race involves hours of work
and is enough to deter most
people. Jefferson junior Jim
Wilson will compete this
weekend in the 400-meter
state meet at Ohio Stadium
in Columbus. He has been
preparing all season and
training very hard this
week, according to track
coach Pat McClure.

An 8 to 1 victory was
turned by the Delphos Pony

they opened the 56 season at Ottoville Monday
evening. Spieles on the
mound for the local nine
hurled a one-hitter and
had 14 strikeouts. He had
a no-hitter going into the
sixth inning when Weber
clouted a triple. Mueller
was credited with a 3-run
triple in the sixth.

of the season. Before their development

the nutrients in the seed was the food
source for the plant. It takes three to four
weeks after germination for crown roots
to become the only root system. Farmers
know that the corn plant will start to rapidly grow after it reaches 12 18 inches
in height and the seed will no longer be
providing nutrients. They will make sure
the plant has adequate nutrients, especially
nitrogen, and if following a split application system, will have applied the second
nitrogen application by this time.
Farmers also know that weeds will
cause the most yield loss when left uncontrolled during the first four weeks of the
seedling stage. Their herbicide programs
are designed to control weeds at planting
and through the early part of the growing
season. Corn plants become very competitive against weeds once they reach 18
inches and begin their rapid growth stages.
This article was written by Ed Lentz and
revised by Jim Hoorman.

The crown or hub of the young seedling

is the control center for the developing
plant. The growing point is below ground.
These cells will eventually become leaves,
ears, and the tassel. The growing point
will gradually move up the developing
plant stem (stalk) until it reaches the top
at tasseling. Since it starts below the soil
surface, the first six leaves produced from
the seed may be damaged by frost, hail,
or other factors without injury to future
leaves and reproductive structures. The
seed will be directly responsible for the
first six leaves. By the time the sixth leaf
is fully extended, the plant will be 12 to
18 inches tall and crown roots will have
become the primary root system. At this
time, the corn has determined its maximum
yield which is usually not attained because
of environmental conditions like a lack of
water.
The crown roots will be responsible to
provide nutrients to the plants for the rest

work must be completed by
that date. In preparation for
the lighting of the pool and

We have a lot of kids who take home a

lunch of peanut butter, peanut butter and jelly
or even leftover pancakes, she said. We
have people say we spoil them, we give them
so much. For some of these kids, this is their
meal for the day.
McGue enlisted the help of the local
schools to assess the need at the onset of the
program.
I talked to the superintendent at the city
schools and he said there was a lot of kids
in the elementary who received a free breakfast, she said. I knew if they needed it
during the school year, they would definitely
need it during the summer.
But, while its certainly the focus, its not
all about nutrition. The kids are taught some
elemental skills, basic courtesies and common
sensibilities that will stand them well outside
of the programs boundaries.
The kids are taught to push in their chairs

when they leave, McGue explained. They

have to bring their own plates up and they
have to clean the food off. And we watch
when theyre throwing food away, were pretty strict about that. These are things that they
should learn. And, they have a safe place to
hang out for an hour every day.
Funding for the program come from a
variety of sources including community and
civic groups.
As the program isnt exclusively for any
specific economic class, children of more
affluent families also attend, often bearing
donations. McGue celebrates the differences,
remarking that, as with teaching their charges
basic etiquette along with a nutritious meal,
this intermingling offers a whole new level of
opportunity.
I think its good, because theyre mixing together, she said. Its not some little
cliqueish thing. A lot of times, someones
sitting by themselves and after a few weeks,
someone goes and sits beside them. It works.
