FOURTH SEMESTER B.Tech., (CHEMICAL ENGINEERING)
END SEMESTER EXAMINATION - May 2014
SUBJECT: MASS TRANSFER-I (CHE-204)
Time: 3 Hrs

Max.Marks:100

Instructions to Candidates:
Answer any FIVE FULL questions.
All questions carry equal marks.( 5 * 20 = 100 )
Make suitable assumptions if required.
1a

Estimate the diffusivity of Methanol vapour (CH3OH, Mol. Wt. 32) through Air 10
(Mol. Wt. 29) at 1.2 atm and 100C. [/k for air 78.6 K, methanol 481.8 K] { r
value for air is 0.3711 nm and methanol 0.3626 nm}

1b

Calculate the rate of diffusion of acetic acid (A, Mol. Wt. 60) across a film of 5
non-diffusing water(B, Mol.wt 18) solution (2mm thick) when the mole fraction
of acetic acid in at two locations are 0.04 and 0.012. (

Derive the equation for molar flux for, under steady state conditions of A is 5
diffusing through B with following stoichiometry (2AB)

Porous Alumina spheres, 10 mm diameter, 25% voids were thoroughly 15

impregnated with an aqueous potassium chloride, KCl solution, concentration
0.25 g/m3. When immersed in pure running water, the spheres lost 90% of their
salt content in 5 h. The temperature was 25 0C. At this temperature the average
diffusivity of KCl in water over the indicated concentration range is 1.84x10 -9
m2/s. Estimate the time for removal of 99% of the dissolved solute if the spheres
had been impregnated with Potassium chromate K2CrO4 solution at a
concentration 0.2 g/cm3, when immersed in a running stream of pure water. The
average diffusivity of K2CrO4 in water at 250C is 1.14x10-9 m2/s.

Oxygen (A) is diffusing through Carbon Monoxide (B) under steady state

conditions, with the Carbon monoxide non-diffusing. The total pressure is 1x10
N/m2, and the temperature is 00C. The partial pressure of oxygen at two planes 2.0
mm apart is, respectively, 13000 and 6500 N/m2. The diffusivity for the mixture
is 1.87x10-5 m2/s. Calculate the rate of diffusion of oxygen in kmol/s through each
square meter of the two planes.

Water is flowing in benzoic acid cast tubes of diameter 5 cm with a length of 35

cm long Benzoic tube proceeded by 300 cm of metal pipe. Pure water at 35 0C
with a Reynolds number 200 enters the pipe. Estimate the average concentration
of Benzoic tube in the water leaving the cast tube. Solubility of benzoic acid in
water is 0.0034 g/cm3. Viscosity of water 0.75x10-3 pa.s, density of water is 990
kg/m3 and Diffusivity of benzoic acid into water is 12x10-10 m2/s

A coal gas is to be freed of its light oil by scrubbing with wash oil as an 20
absorbent. Gas in 0.3 m3/s at 260C and pt =1.07x105 N/m2 containing 3.0% by
volume of light oil vapors. The light oil will be assumed to be entirely benzene
and a 90% removal is required. Wash Oil and Benzene solutions are ideal solution
and temperature is constant (vapour pressure of benzene at 260C is 13330 N/m2)
wash oil is to enter at 26 0C, containing 0.005 mole fraction benzene and has an
average mol. Wt. 260. Find the number of theoretical stages required for an oil
