you are assigned; and
What time and where meal breaks are to be taken

SITE SPECIFIC INDUCTION

inductions should occur as soon as possible after you begin your assignment, and as a minimum

RESOLUTION OF SERIOUS HSE ISSUES

Your host employer may have specific procedures for resolution of HSE issues. If the issue is not
resolved to your satisfaction you must contact your Titan Recruitment consultant immediately.
No contractor/temporary employee is to knowingly place themselves (or other persons) at risk of
injury or harm to their health and safety at work.
If you believe you are at imminent and serious risk you must:
Withdraw from the work area or risk
Report to your host Supervisor/Manager
Accept reasonable alternative work
Refer the matter to an HSE Representative if necessary
Contact us if the issue is not adequately resolved.

HAZARD REPORTING
A hazard is something that has the potential to cause injury or harm to people or property. Hazards
can take many forms, and may include:
Exposed wiring in electrical appliances
Objects or liquids left on floors
Unsafe storage of files or equipment
Unsecured electrical leads in high traffic areas
Blocked stairways
Blocked emergency exits
Poor lighting
If you notice a hazard in the workplace, you should report it to your immediate supervisor, or to your
onsite HSE Representative. You must also report the hazard to Titans Occupational Health and
Safety Representative using the Hazard Report Form, or by telephone (contact details are shown on
the Form). This should be done as soon as reasonably possible to prevent yourself or someone else
suffering an injury caused by the hazard.
Many hazards cannot be eliminated from your workplace. If you follow the safety instructions and
safety rules set at Titan and the host employers site, exposure to hazards will be more successfully
controlled.
Main Points
Learn about the particular hazards in your work environment
Be alert moving around the workplace
Ask your manager/supervisor or fellow workmate to point out hazards for you

REPORTING OF ACCIDENTS AND INJURIES

It is your duty of care as a contractor/temporary employee to report all workplace incidents and
injuries.
You will need to be familiar with the Accident / Incident Reporting and Investigation Procedure that
outlines the requirements for the reporting, documentation and investigation of workplace accidents
and incidents (near misses).
Report all workplace accidents and injuries to your host employer and Titan Recruitment as
soon as you can
Do not leave the workplace before reporting
Report any lost time to your host Supervisor/Manager and Titan Consultant immediately.
An Accident / Incident Report Pack is available on our website to assist in reporting. The Pack
contains a checklist of steps to take in the event of an accident / incident, key contacts and an
Accident / Incident Report Form.

WORKERS COMPENSATION & INJURY MANAGEMENT

If you have a workplace related injury or disease and cannot work for a certain amount of time
because of the disability, you may be able to claim for entitlements under the Workers
Compensation Act.
If you are injured at work, your first priority should be to seek medical attention if you are directed
to do so by your supervisor of HSE Representative, or if you feel it is required. If you havent
already done so, you then need to report the incident to the appropriate person on site, no matter
how minor it may seem at first. Finally, you need to report any incidents or injuries to Titan
Recruitment. You need to inform Titan Recruitment within 24 hours of your injury occurring. If
your injury is ongoing, you should keep Titan Recruitment informed of your condition and
progress at all times.
If you suffer an injury at work, however minor, it is important that you report the incident to both
your host employer and your Recruitment Consultant at Titan Recruitment. This helps everyone
to identify hazards, prevent the re-occurrence of any injuries, and to ensure the safety of all
employees.

HOUSEKEEPING
Housekeeping refers to the overall tidiness of your work area and the worksite in general. There
are a few rules of thumb to consider here:

Storage try to avoid storing heavy items above shoulder or below knee level. Dont store
items where they will block exits, especially emergency exits or stairways, even if it is only for
a short time.
Floor surfaces if you spill something on the floor, clean it up immediately. If you need to
leave the area to get cleaning materials, make sure you alert someone to the spill
Waste disposal be sure to dispose of all rubbish in the designated areas in a timely manner.
Dont let it build up.

MANUAL HANDLING
Some of the most common injuries in the workplace are caused by the bending, lifting and
twisting that is associated with manual handling. For this reason, it is important to use the correct

Contractor HSE Manual

procedure if you are required to lift heavy objects such as computers, storage boxes, or even
furniture.
The correct procedure for lifting heavy objects is as follows:

Position yourself over the load

Feet close to the load and apart for balance
Bend your knees to get into the correct position to lift with your legs, not your back
Get a firm grip on the load, looking forward at all times
Keeping the load close to your body, lift by straightening your legs whilst keeping your back
straight and continuing to look forward
Turn your feet in the direction you want to go before you walk dont twist your body first

If possible, always use available lifting devices or ask a colleague for help. If you are unsure how
to lift something, or dont think you can manage it on your own, dont lift it! Talk to your supervisor
and work together to find a better solution.

YOUR WORKSTATION
Your workstation is probably where you are going to be spending most of your time during your
employment. In most situations, it will consist of a desk, chair, computer, mouse, keyboard and
telephone as a minimum. It is important that you are comfortable at your workstation as many
long term injuries can occur from poorly ergonomically designed workstations. Important points
to consider include:

Chair height your feet should be flat on the floor with a 90 degree angle at your knees
Desk height with your chair height seat, your desk should be around elbow level. You can
adjust your chair to find a middle ground
Computer screen this should be just below eye level so you are looking down to see it
Under desk make sure you have plenty of room to stretch your legs if you need to

It is a good idea to take a break every 30 minutes or so if you are working constantly at your
computer. This will relieve eye tension and help prevent other forms or Repetitive Strain Injury.
Even a short trip to the printer can help.

ELECTRICAL LEADS AND APPLIANCES

Appliances are used throughout the office environment, and can include computers,
photocopiers, phones, and even kitchen appliances. You should take the same precautions
around the office as you do at home. All appliances should be tested and tagged for safety at
regular intervals by qualified technicians. If you are using an appliance that doesnt have a
current tested tag on it, stop, and talk to your supervisor or HSE Representative.

EMERGENCY PROCEDURES
All contractor/temporary employees must make themselves familiar with the emergency
procedures that apply to the particular workplace you have been assigned to. This should be
achieved during your Host Company Induction. If you are not certain of the emergency contacts
and procedures at your workplace, ask your Supervisor/Manager.

WORKPLACE BULLYING AND HARASSMENT

Workplace Bullying and Harassment is not tolerated under any circumstances. You should make
yourself aware of the following Policies, which have been implemented in order to prevent and
deal with harassment and bullying:
Harassment Policy
Workplace Bullying

These policies contain steps you can take if you believe you have been subjected to harassment
or workplace bullying.

CHANGES IN YOUR CIRCUMSTANCES

Your Recruitment Consultant will keep in regular contact with you. However should your
circumstances change, please inform us immediately should any of the following occur:

If you have had an injury on assignment or site, you must immediately inform your
Recruitment Consultant
You are experiencing any problems with your assignment
If you are required to work at a different location
The work you have been instructed to do is different from the description of the assignment
If you obtain or acquire new skills which can be added to your skills profile

RESOLUTION OF HEALTH AND SAFETY ISSUES

Titan is committed to responding rapidly and effectively to any health and safety issues in the
workplace. We recognize that there are times when differences of opinion may arise relating to
OHS matters, and we encourage employees to report all issues as they arise. Where there is a
real or perceived threat to your immediate safety or that of others you may take interim measures
such as ceasing work or isolating yourself from a hazard prior to reporting the incident if
necessary.
The HSE Issue Resolution Procedure should be followed when reporting issues.
