For proper educational planning: Revolutionary changes have taken place in all fields of
education. Earlier, the aim of education was to get knowledge only, the methods of
instruction were limited and teacher used to be the focal point of education. Today the form
of educational planning has undergone complete change. The aim of education is to effect
physical, mental, intellectual, etc. faculties besides giving knowledge and learning. Numerous
new and attractive methods of teaching are being adopted which keep the students active.
Now the centre of education is not the teacher, but the child. Due to child-centred, individual
difference are given importance. The need of educational guidance cannot be negated in view
of the changing school management and administration and methods of teaching.
8. For the realization of Goal of all-round development: Educational guidance can be helpful
in realization of this important goal. The aim of education is not to provide only formal
education by the medium of specific subjects, rather it is also to cultivate awareness,
sensibility, capability, interest, creativity etc. This can be ensured by the process of
educational guidance so that all possibilities potentialities of students can be developed. An
effective stage can be created in the school with the help of guidance which can construct
ideal citizens for the future.
It is evident that educational guidance is much needed for an ideal educational system, which
can contribute significantly in making schools progressive.
Aims of Educational Guidance
The aims of educational guidance are as wide as those of education. At least some aims must
be fulfilled so that all students can attain their goals. These are as follows:
1. To acquaint students with all school programmes and functions and to tell them about
their needs.
2. To acquaint the students with their interests, tendencies, aptitudes and personality
traits.
3. To discover their abilities and limitations so that they can progress within their
limitations.
4. To tell them about the advantages of co-curricular activities and participation in them.
5. To assist students in finding educational opportunities
6. To tell students about different subjects, curricula and training programmes.
7. To provide for individual counselling. Sometimes individual interview should be
conducted with students in order to solve their problems.
8. To advise students about new books related to different subjects.
9. To cultivate study habits in students.
10. To discover study material for students and to motivate them to study and adopt it.
11. To conduct collective guidance and individual counselling from time to time in order
to solve their problems.
12. To motivate students in taking part in collective activities so that they can cultivate
such qualities as leadership and social service etc.
13. To discover career opportunities for students according to their interests, intelligence
and capabilities.
14. To assist students for adjustment in the new environment
15. To connect drop-out students to educational programmes again.
These are minimum programmes which should be run by trained guides, counsellors and
teachers in cooperation with one another so that every student is able to identify his abilities
and can develop himself in every possible manner so as to be able to achieve his goal, and
thus be helpful in the development of himself and nation.

Jones has determined the following aims of educational guidance:

1. To assist students in knowing about future possibilities and expectations of school:
After having passed fifth, eighth and secondary schools, the students are faced with
the problem of taking admission to such schools which are useful for them.
Educational guidance assists them in this respect.
2. To assists students in getting knowledge about different school aims and functions:
Different schools are meant for different types of curricula. Every school has its own
aims and form; for example: multipurpose schools, medical colleges, vocational
colleges, agricultural colleges etc. Students can seek admission to them as per their
interests and mental abilities. The aim of educational guidance is to acquaint the
students with these aims and functions.
3. To acquaint students with subjects given by schools: This has already been said earlier
that different schools are related to different subjects, but due to the difference of
subjects and multi-branches of a subject presents a misleading case for a student.
Educational guidance assists a student in removing this doubt so that he can select
suitable subjects as per his abilities and interests.
4. To acquaint students with eligibilities for admissions to schools: Every school has its
own administrative structure and rules and regulations. Some schools conduct
entrance examinations and interview. Some minimum educational qualifications are
needed for admission to some schools. It is the aim of educational guidance to make
students aware about the rules and regulations of admission so that they do not face
any difficulty at the time of admission.
5. To assist students in adjustment between school curriculum and school life: With the
change in school, a student arrives at a new environment. It is necessary for him to
adjust with the new social environment. In this new environment, he needs assistance
in the following aspects:
a) Cultivations of new habits of study
b) Assistance in selection of subjects
6. To acquaint students with details of competitive examinations: After having
completed education, some type of employment is needed. Because the vacancies are
always limited as compared to the number of candidates, so the best way out is to
conduct competitive examinations such as UPSC, Banking recruitment examination,
etc. It is necessary for the students to know about these examinations fully.
Educational guidance should provide these details to students.
7. To guide in selection of vocation: At times a student is not able to decide which
vocation he should choose for himself. He is not able to coordinate his abilities with
the vocation or job, because he is not aware of the nature of different types of
vocations and his future in them. It is the function of vocational guidance to remove
these doubts and guide him in the right direction.
8. To assist students in knowing their interests, attitudes and likeness: All people are not
alike. Some are more talented than others. By telling about individual difference to an
individual is meant to tell him and guide him for which vocation or job he is suitable
and able. In this form, educational guidance is the basis of vocational guidance.
