a) Though a.c. is superior to d.c. for electric drives, sometimes d.c. is preferred. Give the
5 Marks
reasons and mention some of the applications.
b) A d.c. series motor, with unsaturated magnetic circuit and negligible resistance, when running 6 Marks
at a certain speed on a given load, takes 50A at 500V. If the load torque varies as cube of the
speed, find the resistance to be inserted to reduce the speed by 50%.

3.

a) Derive an expression for the time-dependent temperature as the electrical apparatus cools, in
5 Marks
terms of the cooling time constant.
b) The heating and cooling time constant of 100kW motor are 90 and 120 minutes respectively. 6 Marks
Find the rating of motor when subjected to a duty cycle of 18 minutes on certain load and 30
minutes on no load. Assume that the losses are proportional to the square of load.

4.

a) What are the advantages of electrically produced heat? What are the properties to be
5 Marks
possessed by the element used in resistance oven?
b) A 20KW single-Phase, 220V resistance oven employs circular nichrome wire for its heating 6 Marks
element, if the wire temperature is not to exceed 1000 degree centigrades and the temperature
of the charge is to be 600 degree centigrades. Calculate the size and length of the wire required.
Assume emissivity =0.9, radiating efficiency =0.6 and specific resistance of wire =1.09x10-6
-m.

5.

a) Compare ac and dc source as source of supply for arc welding.

installation.
b) A drawing hall 30m x 13m with a ceiling height of 5m is to be provided with a general 6 Marks
illumination of 120 lux. Taking a coefficient of utilization of 0.5 and depreciation factor of 1.4,
determine the number of fluorescent tubes required, their spacing mounting height and total
wattage. Taking luminous efficiency of fluorescent tube as 40 lumens/watt for 80 watt tube.

8.

a) The maximum speed of a suburban electric train is 60 km/hr. Its scheduled speed is 40km/hr 5 Marks
and duration of stops is 30sec. If the acceleration is 2km/hr/sec and distance between stops is
2kms, determine the retardation.
b) What is meant by the term specific energy consumption? Write the factors affecting specific 6 Marks
energy consumption.
