Mitosis Lesson Plan

Lesson Summary: Class will begin with a short warm up about a significant figure in the study
of science. You will then review the chapter on cell mitosis with the class. The mitosis lab will
then follow the chapter review. Finally there will be a class discussion on mitosis and the
students will be able to connect how the lab and lesson were relative to the warm up at the
beginning of class.
1. Objectives:
-

Students will be able to combat racism, sexism and other forms of prejudice and
discrimination.

Students will have an increased awareness of our global dynamics and living as a
global society.

Students will be able to have a clear, understandable, and consistent idea of how
mitosis works.

Students will be able to retain knowledge aligned with college and career
expectations.

Students will be able to recite the stages of mitosis (knowledge level)(naturalist

intelligences).

Students will be able to demonstrate their knowledge during the mitosis lab
(application level)(bodily-kinesthetic intelligences).

Students will be able to relate the information learned in the lesson and lab to the
warm up about Marie Curie (evaluation level).

2. Materials/Equipment:

Textbook

Marie Curie Warm Up PowerPoint

Mitosis Lab worksheet

1 microscope per pair of students

Pre-prepared slides of Allium (onion root tip)

3. Instruction:
-

Teacher will display Marie Curie Warm Up PowerPoint on projector at the beginning
of class.

Students will read and analyze PowerPoint.

Teacher will read PowerPoint to class and ask class why they think Marie Curie was
an important figure in science.

Class will respond with why they believe Marie Curie was important.

Teacher will then instruct class to pull out their textbooks. Teacher will then read
aloud the chapter about cell division and mitosis.

Teacher will stop periodically and ask students if they need clarification.

Students will respond if clarification is needed.

Teacher will then show short animation on mitosis on projector.

Teacher will then distribute worksheets for mitosis lab.

Students will partner up with the student next to them for lab.

Teacher will distribute microscopes and slides for lab.

Students will conduct lab and fill out worksheet along the way.

Teacher will provide clarification if needed.

Teacher will call on lab partners do identify the different stages of mitosis.

Students will identify the stages based on their discoveries during the lab.

Teacher will collect lab supplies and prepare class for a final discussion.

4. Closure:
-

During the final discussion you will ask the class how cancer and mitosis are related.
The class will then be able to identify why Marie Curie was vital to cancer treatment
research and, thus, why she was relative to todays assignment.

5. Evaluation:
-

You will evaluate students answers as you call on lab partners to identify the
different stages of mitosis at the end of the lab.

Lab worksheet will account for 80% of grade for class.

The remaining 20% will be a participation grade.

Extra credit will be awarded to the student who can successfully make the connection
between Marie Curie and mitosis in the closure discussion.
