Madcap romance is multiplied in Johnnie To and Wai Ka-Fais sequel to
their hit romantic comedy Dont Go Breaking My Heart. Years after Zixin
(Gao Yuanyuan) chose Qihong (Daniel Wu) over Shen-Ran (Louis Koo), Zixin
finds herself working for the Goddess of Stocks Yang Yang-Yang (Miriam
Yeung), Shen-Rans current flame. Zixin and Qihong are engaged but
having difficulties, giving Shen-Ran an opportunity to reengage with Zixin
at the cost of his relationship with Yang-Yang, naturally. Meanwhile, YangYang meets her own alternative suitor: Paul (Vic Chou), who coincidentally
is Zixins brother! Readily acknowledging the formulaic nature of the genre,
Johnnie To and Wai Ka-Fai entertainingly deconstruct the romantic comedy
with surprising creativity and sly, self-referential wit.

Following American Dreams in China, director Peter Chan turns his

sharp humanist touch to the riveting kidnapping drama Dearest.
Based on a true story, the film follows Tian Wen-Jun (Huang Bo) and
his ex-wife Lu Xiao-Juan (Hao Lei) as they search frantically for their
missing three year-old son Pengpeng. Years later, after numerous
dashed hopes, they find Pengpeng living with Li Hong-Xin (Zhao Wei).
But their reunion with the vastly changed Pengpeng proves difficult,
and Hong-Xin convincingly claims that she is unaware that the child
who now calls her mother was originally stolen. Besides a smart
thriller, Dearest is a morally complex tale of opposing parents bound
by desperate and unyielding love for one child.

Japanese arthouse auteur Kawase Naomis latest meditation on the

relationship between man and nature is a coming-of-age romance
between the daughter of a terminal ill shaman and a teenage boy
trying to overcome his parents divorce. Mostly shot on Amami Island,
the ancestral home of Kawases family, this absorbing and beautifully
shot drama sees the filmmaker looking inwards as she patiently
contemplates spiritual issues like death, reincarnation, familial roots
and sexuality. The refreshingly raw performances of young stars
Murakami Nijiro and Yoshinaga Jun lend the film a much-needed
humanity that provides balance to the storys philosophical elements.
Her fifth film to be selected for the Cannes Film Festival, Still the

After flirting briefly with retirement, director Lee Joon-ik (The King

his career. Collecting many awards in its native South Korea, Hope is
named after its heroine, a young girl who gets lured into an alleyway

strength to cope, recover and bring the perpetrator to justice. Though
acutely devastating, the sensitive human drama finds a silver lining

Pema Tseden
-
BIOGRAPHY
Pema Tseden is widely considered the leading filmmaker of Tibetan
Cinema, and is the first director in China to film his movies entirely
in the Tibetan language. Frequently shooting in a distant docudrama
style, Pema Tseden is concerned with an authentic portrayal of Tibet,
and not the romanticized vision seen in many western and even
Asian films. His films examine traditional culture and its marriage,
both harmonious and clashing, with rapidly changing contemporary
society. These are observant and unblemished portraits of an oftmythologized and also controversial part of the world, and reveal
Pema Tseden as a vital and invaluable voice in world cinema.
Also known as Wanma Caidan, Pema Tseden was born in 1969
in the Tibetan region of Amdo, in Qinghai Province. The son of
Tibetan nomads, he studied Tibetan language and literature before
transitioning to film at the prestigious Beijing Film Academy. He
entered the film industry in 2002 and quickly made his mark, earning
the Golden Rooster Best Directorial Debut Award for The Silent Holy
Stones (2006) and a Shanghai International Film Festival Jury Grand
Prix for The Search (2007). Pema Tseden is also an accomplished
writer and has published more than 50 novels in Tibetan and Chinese.

A rare Mandarin-language film by Pema Tseden, this is a deceptively

conventional work about a young mans coming of age. Narrated by a
young boy, the film follows his elder brother as he attempts to be the first
person from their small village to attend college. But the older brother meets
obstacles, including an unforeseen liaison with an admiring classmate, and
ultimately leaves town amidst questions of his character and integrity. Still,
the younger brother believes in his elder brother, and steadfastly believes
his brother has gone to scale the Bayan Har Mountains. Based on a novel
by Wang Shiyue, Flares Wafting in 1983 is an elegiac tale about youth
coming to terms with reality.

Pema Tseden again explores the conflict between evaporating

traditional values and encroaching modern society with this
tragicomic story about a family dog thats discovered to be worth a
fortune. The nomad mastiff is a prized breed worth millions to wealthy
Chinese, causing many to be stolen from Tibetan families and sold
on the black market. Before his own familys mastiff is taken, a young
man sells the dog for a quick payday. But his father, an aging herder,
is furious at losing his dog to the Chinese and seeks to reclaim it, no
matter the cost. Old Dog is an incisive look at Tibets changing society
that stands as Pema Tsedens most unsettling and sharply allegorical
work yet.

A filmmaking crew travels through Tibets dusty mountains and rural

villages in search of actors to perform in a film based on Drime
Kunden, a beloved Tibetan opera. Besides discovering that few
people are familiar with the opera or its songs anymore, the crew
become deeply involved with individuals whose mundane personal
stories contrast sharply with the spiritual message embedded in
Drime Kunden. Pema Tseden uses long takes, static camerawork and
untrained actors for this elegiac road movie, which serves as an eyeopening document on modern Tibet and also a tentative farewell to a
culture in need of preservation. Filmed on location in Pema Tsedens
home region of Amdo with an entirely Tibetan cast and crew.

Pema Tzedens films, short stories and literary translations are

expressive moments of self-representation of contemporary Tibetan
lives. His use of varying media in the context of international
reception have allowed his works to develop unique inter-medial and
inter-cultural dimensions. The speakers of this symposium will explore
the literary, artistic and cultural significance of Pema Tzedens

Chinas first Tibetan-language film and Pema Tsedens first feature,

The Silent Holy Stones tells a charming but also concerning story
about the quiet erosion of Tibetan culture. A ten year-old Chinese boy
(Danpei Lama) has lived in a monastery his whole life, selected at
an early age to train as a Buddhist monk. Called Little Lama, the
boy takes a 48-hour holiday to see his family on the New Year, only
to become enraptured by his familys television. Hooked on TV serials
adapting The Journey to the West, he resolves to bring the television
back to the monastery to show his master. Meanwhile, the reality of
Little Lamas shifting devotions slowly becomes apparent to everyone
around him.

Both straightforward and subtly revealing, Pema Tsedens first works

provide early glimpses at the style and aesthetic of his future feature
films. The mournful Grasslands concerns the theft of a yak thats been
liberated and allowed to roam free as a means of creating good
karma. Elderly Ama Tsomo journeys in search of her stolen yak, delving
into a crime against man, Buddhism and traditional Tibetan custom.
Meanwhile, The Silent Manistone tells the deceptively charming tale
of a young monk who visits his family over the New Year, only to
become enchanted by a VCD television serial of The Journey to the
West. Pema Tseden would later adapt The Silent Manistone into his
first feature, The Silent Holy Stones.

Since publishing his first short story in 1992, Dung Kai-Cheung has
become one of the most influential contemporary writers in Hong
Kong. In his first film since Datong: The Great Society (HKAFF 2011),
filmmaker Evans Chan offers an illuminating portrait of the awardwinning author, showing his life, the works that shaped him and his
impact on the writers that came after him. Also a look at the current
state of the Hong Kong literary world, the film features insights from
Hong Kongs leading cultural figures about Hong Kongs reputation as
a cultural desert and the challenges facing Hong Kong writers like
Dung today.

In 1970, during the height of the Cultural Revolution in China, Hong
Kong student Chan Wah-Keung gets transferred by his father to
a leftist school that follows the teachings of Chairman Mao rather
than the British colonial governments education policy. Branded a
bourgeois by his stern and zealous homeroom teacher, Wah-Keung
has a hard time fitting into a school system where he must wave the
Little Red Book and write self-criticisms for his many mistakes. The
second feature film directed by Hong Kong theatre pioneer Ho Yi,

Evan Yang is best known as the director of several popular films at

MP & GI, but his identity as a writer had rarely been discussed until
writers Ye Si and Mary Wong republished one of Yangs short story
anthologies in 2013. Film critic/scholar Shu Kei sheds a light on Yangs
writing career in Imagining Evan Yang, a part of RTHKs documentary
series on renowned authors that features enactments of selected
scenes in Yangs works. Shu also uses interviews with scholars and
Yangs children and collaborators to explore how Yang was able to
rebuild his identity as an artist after coming to Hong Kong. Screening

After film festival favorites Candy Rain and Honey Pupu, Chen Hung-I
completes his Taipei love trilogy with this ensemble urban romance.
Design 7 Love tells the story of seven individuals who work in a Taipei
design firm, their personal stories intermingling and entangling,
weaving strands of love and hate between and among them. On this
intense battlefield of love, filled with lies and deceit, who are the
true winners and losers? As in his previous films, Chen Hung-I uses
comedy and drama, realism and quirkiness to tell a unique, lyrical
and remarkably compelling story about modern love in the big city.

Produced by Tsui Hark, this 1992 remake of King Hus seminal Dragon
Gate Inn recreates the originals intrigue while establishing its own
unique identity as a nineties Hong Kong cinema classic. Tony Leung
Ka-Fai and Brigitte Lin play rebels on the run from a crazed eunuch
(Donnie Yen). Hiding in the desert-located Dragon Inn, they meet
mysterious innkeeper Jade (Maggie Cheung) and begin a battle of
wits versus the eunuchs henchman. Characterized by its wild tonal
shifts, fast pacing and high-flying martial arts sequences (from
action choreographer Tony Ching Siu-Tung), New Dragon Gate Inn
serves as a spiritual prequel to Tsui Harks 2011 blockbuster Flying

Seven years in the making, Cem Kayas vibrant documentary offers an
entertaining essay on Turkish popular cinema through the years and
the role of copy culture in Yesilcam, the Turkish film industry. Through
abundant film excerpts and interviews with actors and filmmakers, this
documentary revisits the wild heyday of Turkish cinema in the fifties and
sixties, back when Yesilcam was producing hundreds of titles annually.
Many of these films were blatantly lifted from Hollywood hits and churned
out quickly in hackneyed, low-tech fashion. Kaya watched thousands
of them, and the hilarious clips hes compiled are a big highlight of the

Widely considered one of the best films of Turkish cinema, Hope was
Yilmaz Guneys first film to garner international recognition, even while
being censored at home. Guney himself stars as an indebted cart driver
struggling to support his family. When his horse gets run over, he loses his
sole means of livelihood. Desperate and impoverished, he first places his
hope in the lottery, and then in a mythical buried treasure. A turning point
in Guneys revolutionary filmmaking career, the bleak black-and-white
drama evokes Italian neorealism in its depiction of urban poverty and
class injustice, but becomes increasingly absurdist as the protagonist is
consumed by his quest for treasure.

prison. Each mans journey is met with obstacles as they confront military
violence, feudal customs and inner demons that destroy what family
