Interpretation Essay: The No Color Time of the Day
Where words leave off, music begins.
Heinrich Heine
Music became an essential thing within our lives, so in this essay will interpret a selected
song of a famous composer; his name is Franck Pourcel. A lot of his compositions are related to
his life, and we have to consider that he had a difficult life to become what he was. Along his
career, he composed a lot of songs. The one chosen here is The no color time of the day. Since
the name of the song; it transmits a feel of sadness, a feel of loneliness and the same feeling is
across all the song; from the beginning to the end, so why it makes us feel like that? The
interpretation will begin with a brief description of the name of the song, then it refers to the
instruments which play it, with a subjective description; and it will finish with the relationship
found between music and feelings.
The music has a huge influence within the body, mind, emotions and relationships of
people. The reason is because music can create different type of feelings and a desire of crowed
together. This music in particular transmit sadness. The no color time of the day is the title of
the song but, it is also an enormous source of information about the meaning of the melody. The
words no color can be interpreted as without happiness, hope or motivation. The rest of the
words: time of the day could be mean a particular moment in a day or, maybe, an era. If we
join this two interpretations, the result is that the compositor, with the title, give to his public a
clearly guide of what he wants to express with his song: the negative feelings like loneliness,
anguish and frustration when we go through pain. When it comes to interpret a song, the title
could be helpful to complete the analysis, but people can form the first opinion of the meaning

just by listening the music without knowing its title. To understand why this can be possible it is
necessary to know the influence of rhythm, tone and speed of a song in emotions.
Music has the peculiar ability to induce emotions in listeners (Juslin and Sloboda, 2001).
Many studies have demonstrated the consistency of emotional responses to music (Peretz et. al.,
2008), so the musical structure of a piece of music cannot be dissociated whit emotional
qualities. However, only a small number of studies in the field of music cognition and time
perception have investigated the influence of musical structure in emotional qualities. The result
of the few studies in this field determined that a piece of music in a major key, often associated
with a fast tempo, is considered happy, but if the pieces are written in a minor key, with a slow
tempo, are judged as sad (Bueno and Ramos, 2007). So, the song The No Color Time of the Day
with its slow tempo can be considered sad following those studies, and without the knowledge of
this studies it is also considered as sad. It is also important to know about the instruments used in
this song, and the role they play in it.
The song is played by a symphony orchestra. In the beginning we can hear the sound of a
guitar besides a sound that looks like a piano or a plucked string instrument, and then we can
hear other group of stringed instruments like cello, violin and violas. After that a group of
percussion instruments are added and sound all together. Then the guitar and other instruments
that we cannot recognize sound alone again, but almost at the end of the song we can hear an
instrument that sounds like a flute or a clarinet. The rhythm is slow and the tone is low; it makes
the song to transmit a feel of calm.

Calm is transmitted with this song, so it is possible to affirm that there is a strong
relationship between this song and peoples feelings. Feelings such as: sadness, happiness,
among others. The main feeling that this song provokes on people is sadness because of its lyric.
Low musical notes cause this kind of feeling on people. It also can produce sadness on people
because it can make people remember some bad aspects of their lives. Music can produce some
feelings come out because according to Boso (2006), Sounds waves are collected mainly by the
outer ear, although it is widely accepted that musical vibrations can also activate some skin
receptor stimulate by changes in local pressure (p.187). Music actives come regions in the
brains called paralimbic and limbic regions which make people show some types of feelings
when people listen to a song. (Blood, 1999)
Music can have a big influence in life because it is related with emotions and feelings in
the way it is composed. It can transmit sadness, loneliness, happiness and more feelings that are
associated in the way the composition is made (rhythm, speed, tone). With all this information
it is possible to conclude that The No Color Time of the Day is a song which transmit sadness,
calm and more feelings related with.
