Introductory Chemistry
Elements
This unit is scheduled for
week 2 of the semester. Total
student engagement time
expected = 4 hours.
Author:
Grade Level/Audience:
Elizabeth Fallon
First-year college students
Chemistry: Key concepts are introduced that provide a foundation for study in other sciences as well
as advanced science disciplines. Students use a study of elements by exploring the classifications,
structures, and interactions.
Technology: Students will use Web 2.0 resources to explore, produce, share, and present information.
Learning
Objectives:
Dispositions or Attitudes
At the end of this module,
students will:
Have a foundational
knowledge of chemical
elements on the periodic
table
Analyze Status
Student Distribution - The students enrolled in this course include:
9 students who completed high school Chemistry
8 students who graduated from an urban high school and did not take high school Chemistry
1 students with accommodations
Analyze

at least 3
different kinds
of learners)
PreAssessment

determine what
learners know
before lesson?)
What will you
differentiate?

Total 18 students
Types of Learners The students enrolled in this course are diverse learners:
3 students placed at risk 2 students are single mothers with young children and 1 student has
disclosed that his father is in hospice dying of cancer.
6 students from with low socioeconomic status these students attended the local inner city high
school and some of them ride public transportation and/or carpool to come to campus to attend class
meetings.
Motivation Several students have expressed concern that learning Chemistry will be too hard for
them. Several others have explained that they are hoping to get a nursing degree but dont really
understand why they need to take a Chemistry course.
Brief content pre-test on general introductory Chemistry for understanding of basic Chemistry
concepts and the periodic table of elements.
Week 1 assignment asking students to introduce themselves and how they expect to apply Chemistry
in their future profession.
Week 2 assignment asking students to share their experience with Chemistry courses on the course
discussion board in the Learning Management System (LMS).
These activities will help the instructor determine the entry level skills and interest of each student in
the class.
Content: The teacher will provide a choice of methods for students to prepare for class on the periodic
table of elements
Processes: Methods for students to work in groups pairs & entire class to learn. The teacher will
group students heterogeneously when assigning pairs and teams. In other words, students with some
prior Chemistry knowledge will work side-by-side with students with no prior Chemistry knowledge to
provide support, scaffolding, and motivation.
Interest: Instructor-led course discussion about Chemistry in everyday life. Help students identify and
communicate areas of interest with Chemistry in their field of study (medicine, nursing, allied health,
etc.) and/or in life (energy, food, environment, etc.).
Learning profile: Student responses on LMS discussion board and in classroom discussions.

(Give learners options for
acquiring information)

In-class demonstration
Each student will make a
5 minute in-class
presentation using the
Prezi presentation.
Individual quiz Working
individually, each student
will complete an online
quiz covering the
periodic table of
elements content

Preparation - The teacher will give a preparatory homework assignment for students to get introduced
to the periodic table of elements using a Web 2.0 resource of their choice online textbook, YouTube
videos, Khan Academy modules. The teacher will write a discussion prompt and students will
participate in an online discussion using the course LMS.
In Class In the first 90-minute class meeting of week 2, the teacher will start the class session with a
short lecture to engage students and activate their learning from the previous homework assignment.
Then, working in pre-assigned heterogeneous pairs students will create 3 FlipQuiz questions. With the
teachers help, all the questions will be loaded into the FlipQuiz game and the class will play the game
in the time remaining.
Out of Class The teacher will give a homework assignment for students to build on their learning to
prepare a 5 minute in-class presentation on one element from the periodic chart.
In Class - In the second 90-minute class meeting of week 2, each student will give a presentation on
their assigned element using a Prezi.
PostAssessment
(How will you
evaluate
learners and
success of
lesson?)
Individually prepared and presented in-class presentations will be used to evaluate student
understanding of the content as well as the time investment to research and complete the project.
The teacher will provide assignment guidelines for preparing the in-class presentation. The teacher
will also help students set up a Prezi account and find the Prezi tutorial. Students will present 5minute in-class presentations and make their Prezis available to all classmates online. These activities
and assessment should help increase students understanding of the Periodic Table of Elements as
well as how to effectively collaborate with classmates.
The teacher will also create and assign a Periodic Table of Elements unit quiz based on the information
collected and presented by students as well as content information provided in all other resources
open textbooks, YouTube videos, Khan Academy, etc.
