Hood

Material

Gage
As stated in the ANSI/AIHA Z9.2-2006[ref] and ACGIH Ventilation Manual[ref], hoods should be
made from metal of at least two gages heavier than that required for ducts. This requirement will
be followed. So, the gage of the hood will be determined after the gage of the duct has been
selected.
Duct
Material
For welding fume exhaust system, Unified Facilities Guide Specification of NAVFAC [ref]
required that ducts are to be constructed from galvanized steel. Moreover, SMACNA [ref]
presented advantages of galvanized steel which include high strength, rigidity, durability, rust
resistance, availability, non-porous, workability, and weldability. With this, galvanized steel will
be selected.
Gage
According to the ANSI/AIHA Z9.2-2006 [ref], steel sheet metal ducts should be constructed of
gages not less than those provided in the HVAC Duct Construction Standards of SMACNA [ref].
This requirement will be followed.
In order to determine the gage of the duct, selection of the pressure class must be done first.
Table 1 found in the appendix shows the pressure class in relation to the operating pressure. After
the pressure class has been selected, the gage of the duct will be chosen using Table 2. The
longitudinal seam column of this table will used. In addition to this, ANSI/AIHA Z9.2-2006 [ref]
also requires that elbows and bends should be at least two gages heavier than required for ducts
but with equal diameter. This requirement will also be followed.

diameter

An alphabet letter in the table means that reinforcement angles or their equivalent must be used
at the foot interval following the letter. The angle sizes are: A= 1 x 1 x 1/8; B= 1-1/4 x 1-

1/4 x 3/16; C= 1-1/2 x 1-1/2 x 3/16; D= 1-1/2 x 1-1/2 x 1/4; E= 2 x 2 x 3/16; F= 2 x

2 x 1/4
If companion flange joints are used as reinforcements, those for 25 to 36 diameter shall be 11/2 x 1-1/2 x 3/16; for 37 to 48 diameter 2 x 2 x 3/16; for 40 to 60 diameter
2-1/2 x 2-1/2 x 3/16; for 61 to 72 diameter 3 x 3 x 1
