Read the dialogue below and answer the questions that follow.

Hi, Subra. Have you heard about the legend of Mahsuri?

I only know that it is a Langkawi Island legend. Do you know more about

:
From what I know, Mahsuri was a beautiful maiden who lived
during the reign of
Sultan Abdullah Mukarram Shah II who ruled Kedah between 1752 and
1800. Sadly, she died for a crime she did not commit.
Subra :

What happened to her?

Khairul
:
A woman named Mahura was jealous of Mahsuris beauty. Mahsuri
would later marry
Mahuras son, Mat Deris, and eventually gave birth to a baby boy.
Mahura got even more jealous so she accused Mahsuri that the baby boy
was not Mat Deris but Deramangs, a young performer she befriended.
Subra :

That is terrible! What happened later?

Khairul
:
The chieftain of Langkawi who was also Mahsuris father-in-law,
Dato Karma Jaya, believed
the accusation and sentenced Mahsuri to death without proper
investigation.
Subra :
That is very unfortunate for Mahsuri. I wonder if they found out if she
was innocent.
Khairul
:
It was said that as proof of her innocence, white blood was seen
gushing out of her
wound during execution at Padang Mat Sirat. She also cursed Langkawi
that it would not prosper for seven generations because of the act of
injustice.

Subra :
That is a very interesting legend. I would like to go to Langkawi one day
and see where this
legend took place.

Read the passage below and answer the questions that follow.
The Iron
The iron is a small appliance used to press clothes to remove creases. It was first
invented in 1882 by Henry W. Seeley in New York. It was very heavy and took a long
time to warm up.
However, the iron nowadays is light and easy to use. Look at the picture of a
modern electric steam iron below and read the features it has.

Features of a modern iron:

A design that allows the iron to be set down, usually standing on its end, without the
hot sole plate touching anything.
A thermostat to maintain a constant temperature

A temperature control dial for ironing different cloth such as silk, wool, cotton
and linen
An electric cord wrapped in heat-resistant material
A sole plate that sends steam constantly onto the clothes

In the 1960s, people used charcoal irons made of copper. They had to put in
hot charcoal when ironing the clothes. In the 1980s, flat irons were used. You may be
able to find these ancient irons from China, England and Germany in the museums.
