Paul's Thorn
"And lest I should be exalted above measure through the abundance of the revelations, there was
given to me a thorn in the flesh, the messenger of Satan to buffet me, lest I should be exalted
above measure. For this thing I besought the Lord thrice, that it might depart from me. And he
said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most
gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.
Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in necessities, in persecutions, in
distresses for Christ's sake: for when I am weak, then am I strong." (2 Cor. 12:7-10)
Step 1- Crushing bad teaching- (doctrines of devils, traditions of men , and philosophy) Bad
teaching will tell (and I would have told you before I got filled with the Holy Ghost) that Paul's
thorn represented that God "allows" bad things to happen to you. This is a lie from the enemy.
Do you "allow" your children to run outside and disobey you and because of it they trip on the
curb and scrape their knee? No, you do not. They have the power to choose, and they chose to go
outside of your "Kingdom laws" (Kingdom = Kings domain, and your domain is your house, and
your laws are in place their for your kids) and the byproduct is they got hurt. God is not the great
allower. He is sovereign, but most people abuse that Word, and RELIGION has made its own
definition to step out of being accountable. The definition of sovereign is and I quote "a supreme
ruler, one with ultimate power." You know what that does not say? The one that controls
everything. He is the one that MAKES you do things. The one that sends the drunk driver, the
cancer, or the test? God does not test (tempt) that is not God my friend. We need to stop
sweeping everything under the rug of all sovereign God. That EVERYTHING is God's will. IF
that's the case don't take medicine when you get sick, because it's God's will...why would you
want to go against God's will!? That is just silly to blame God and point the finger at Him. That
is just sheer "lack of knowledge which is why my people are perishing" (JESUS SAID). There is
a reason Paul prayer for the church (who is ALREADY saved) to "receive the spirit of wisdom
and revelation", because if they do not get revelation of these simple truths they will NOT know
who their daddy in heaven is, and they will get beat up by the enemy every day. Above all else
they will NOT get to receive God's best for their lives. Let us eliminate that this thorn was from
God is one foul swoop. Does God send massagers of Satan? (angels of darkness, demons, act.)
NO!
Scripture:
James 1:13 When tempted, no one should say, "God is tempting me." For God cannot be tempted
by evil, nor does he tempt anyone
1 Timothy 4:1- Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from
the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils;
Colossians 2:8- Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the
tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ.

Step 2- This thorn is easily seen as the byproduct of the first verse here. "And lest I should be
exalted above measure through the abundance of the revelations"- Why does he have this thorn?
The abundance of revelation. If you have eyes to see, that is plain and simple. NOT many have
Paul's level of revelation, therefore they will not go through the "buffeting" Paul went through.
"There was given to me a thorn in my flesh, the messenger of Satan to buffet me." So God does
not send messengers of Satan. Why was this messenger sent? " lest I should be exalted above
measure" That is why. Satan did not want Paul to be exalted, so he buffeted him in many ways to
scare people into not exalting Paul. What a scheme of the devil! To get people scared of
following Jesus by beating up Paul. God would not do that! God say' specifically " Humble
yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time", God's
mighty hand itself will exalt you! Would God want Paul exalted to bring Glory to his name? Yes.
So why would God put a thorn in His side to crush God's glory? He wouldn't! That goes against
everything Jesus taught. "A kingdom divided against itself will not stand". There is a biblical
way to be exalted, and GOD HIMSELF exalts you!
Scripture1 Peter 5:6- Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you
in due time
Mark 3:24- And if a kingdom be divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand.
Step 3- What is a buffeting. A buffeting? The definition is "to strike against or push repeatedly".
Biblical there was buffeting for Paul and anyone who really serves God. It is called persecution.
If you read and do not think of the bible in chapters (because there was not chapters when this
was put on paper) Not but a handful of verses before this is describes Paul's buffeting " Thrice
was I beaten with rods, once was I stoned, thrice I suffered shipwreck, a night and a day I have
been in the deep". Wake up church. God doesn't stone people, or beat them! God LOVES YOU!
"Satan comes but to steal, kill, and destroy", Not GOD!
Scripture:
2 Corinthians 11:25 Thrice was I beaten with rods, once was I stoned, thrice I suffered
shipwreck, a night and a day I have been in the deep
John 10:10 The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they
might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.
Step 4- God says "My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness.
Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon
me. Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in necessities, in persecutions, in
distresses for Christ's sake: for when I am weak, then am I strong." He even describes that it is
persecution! Of course God would not take it away when Paul was asking God not to. Jesus did
not pay for us to not be persecuted. When we are persecuted and weak it glorifies God. "to live is
Christ, and to die is gain". The Grace of GOD brought Paul through the impossible! He said "
therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities". That word glory is like when " And Moses said

unto Pharaoh, Glory over me" that word glory is to reign or have victory. Paul is teaching us we
have VICTORY even in our weakness! And the word infirmity in original text is not sickness, or
disease, it's our finite minds. That is our weakness. The bible says "What? know ye not that your
body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your
own?" Our body is GODS property! He takes care of us. Not HURT us! That does NOT Glorify
the Cross! He loves us! Hallelujah!
Scriptures:
1 Corinthians 6:19 What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is
in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?
Philippians 1:21 For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain.
2 Corinthians 12:9 And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made
perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of
Christ may rest upon me.
Summary- Paul's thorn was a great amount of revelation which brought about much persecution.
He prayed to God for it to be removed, but God will not remove persecution. He will carry you
through it but not stop it from happening. The persecution examples are the beatings,
shipwrecks, and stoning. God carried him through all of the above. Paul "gloried" which means
had Victory in ALL the examples of buffeting. God is strong in our weakness, and His promises
of Grace, and power and might are all true. God is a good Father, and always will be!
