OTTAWA On Thursday in Putnam
County Common Pleas Court, Trenton
Lauf, 38, Ottoville, was found guilty on two
charges rape and the illegal use of a minor
in nudity related to the sexual abuse of
his stepdaughter. Abuse of the child began in
2013 when she was just 10 years of age and
continued sporadically over the course of the
next two years.
Evidence in the trial, which began on
Wednesday, relied heavily on testimony
presented by the now 13-year old child.
According to the girl for purposes of the
court identified as Jane Doe, date of birth
2003 Lauf first forced her to perform
oral sex on him in December 2013. In her
testimony, the child said that the abuse continued over the course of several months,
during which time Lauf provided money to
her, telling her to keep your mouth shut.
The girl further testified that she reported
the abuse to her mother on several occasions,
an assertion that William Kluge, Laufs
defense attorney, returned to repeatedly over
the course of the trial in an effort to undermine her testimony.
I just want you to keep two things in
mind: December of 2013 and July of 2015,
Kluge told the jury in his closing argument.
Why are those dates important? Because if
the alleged misconduct occurred starting in
December of 2013 and it was immediately
reported, as (Jane Doe) told you, to her mom.

Canal Days Toast has tropical theme

DELPHOS The invitations are out and the reservations are coming in for 2016 The Toast to the City.
This years kickoff to the Canal Days festival is set for
6-9 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 15. Once again, reservations
are $40 per person or $300 for a reserved table for
eight.
Welcome to Paradise Life is Good Today is the
tropical theme for the 10th annual Toast. More than
500 attended last years Toast and the chairmen for the
event expect even bigger turnout this year.
This is such a great event for Delphos. Anytime
you have that many people for an outside party, it cant
be anything but fun, said Diane Sterling, the Canal
Days event coordinator. We have a short-but-sweet
program with Delphos dignitaries, lots of great food
from local restaurants, a superb selection of wines, and
perfect background music. The Toast has been growing
ever since its inception 10 years ago for Canal Days
50th anniversary and this is a great kickoff to the Canal
Days weekend.
Music for the evening will be provided by Get
the Party Goin With J. D. Owen. JD is from Findlay
and has more than 40 years of experience performing
at every type of venue possible. As a solo act, he can
customize his performance, playing the best of Classic
Rock, Country, Motown, Jimmy Buffet and more.
The Toast is an open-to-the-public event. If you

A lemonade stand on South Franklin Street was doing brisk business on Thursday. The stand was run by Dean Trentman, center

incurred when their son, Aiden, had cancer. Aiden has since passed

Dormant chickenpox virus can cause shingles again and again

The shingles virus causes painful blisters

on the body that can cause phantom pain for
weeks after the virus has gone.
Shingles is caused by the chickenpox virus.
When you have the chickenpox virus, it
will lay dormant in your nerve roots, Sherri
Recker, Director of Nursing at Putnam
County Health Department, said. Anyone
who has had chickenpox could develop
shingles.
The Center of Disease Control and
Prevention recommends those 60 years and
older receive the shingles vaccine, Zostavax.

The vaccine is only administered once.
It is important that people get vaccinated
as there are one million cases of it every year
and around one in three people will get shingles in their lifetime according to the CDC.
Those who do get shingles are not safe
from getting it again. The virus can reappear
if the person is not vaccinated.
However, shingles cannot be passed from
person-to-person. Shingles can only cause
chickenpox in those who have never developed it before and are not vaccinated.
You cant give shingles to someone else.
It is easy to prevent the spread of the virus.
You can only spread it when there is active
drainage from the blisters, Recker said. To

stop the spread, keep your lesions covered
with a bandage or clothing.
To help prevent the virus, those 60 and
older should check with their insurance to
see if the vaccine is covered. They can then
call their doctors office, Putnam or Allen
County Health Departments or the local
pharmacies.
For those who do develop shingles, it typically develops on only one side of the body.
According to the CDC, it usually occurs in a
stripe along the body.
It just depends on what nerve roots its
in; thats where the shingles will manifest
itself, Recker said.
Although the rash typically lasts two to

four weeks, the pain caused by the blisters
can last for weeks or months following. This
is called postherpetic neuralgia or PHN.
PHN is pain in the place of the rash after
it has cleared. PHN risk increases with age,
According to the CDC, approximately 13
percent of those 60 and older with shingles
will get PHN.
According to Recker, other symptoms to
look our for are fever, headache, chills and
upset stomach.
Those who believe they have shingles
should contact their doctor to get treatment
as early as possible.

On July 1, officers met with a complainant in the 400 block of South Canal
Street who reported that his vehicle had
been entered and items stolen from inside.
On July 2, officers met with a female at
the police department that wished to file a
menacing report. The female told officers
that she was threatened and has since been
harassed by another female after an incident that happened in June.
On July 4, officers were dispatched to
the 900 block of Lima Avenue in reference
to a burglary complaint. Officers arrived
and found that an unknown subject or subjects had forced entry into the residence.
The homeowner did not notice anything
missing at this time.
On July 4, officers received a second
complaint of an attempted burglary in the
900 block of Lima Avenue. Officers met
with the second complainant and found
that subjects attempted to enter her residence, but were unsuccessful. Both incidents remain under investigation.
On July 4, officers responded to the 500
block of East Third Street in reference to
a theft from a vehicle. Officers spoke with
the vehicle owner and found that someone
had entered the vehicle and stole items
from inside.
On July 5, officers responded to the 300
block of South Pierce Street in reference to
two dogs attacking another dog. Officers
arrived and met with the owners of the dogs
involved. It was determined that the two pit
bulls had broken free from their tie-out and
attacked a small dog that was being walked
on a leash. The small dog was killed during
the incident. The case was forwarded to
the Allen County Dog Wardens Office for
further investigation and possible charges.

the victim of a theft incident. Upon arrival,
officers met with a male who stated that
he had invited a male and female to his
residence whom he had just met earlier in
the night. The male left the two alone for
a short period of time and upon returning,
found that they had left his residence and
had stolen items from him.
On July 6, officers were dispatched to
the 200 block of West Seventh Street to
investigate a possible attempted burglary.
Officers arrived and met with the homeowner and were shown a small broken window in her front door. Officers were able to
determine that entry into the residence was
not made.
On July 7, officers took a report from
a female whose 16-year-old daughter was
involved in a minor assault while babysitting. The childs mother, who is not the
custodial parent, got into a dispute with the
complainants daughter over a civil child
custody issue. The report will be reviewed
by the prosecutors office to see if charges
will be pursued.
On July 7, officers met with a female at
a local business after she reported that she
had been followed into and throughout the
business by a male. Officers located the
male and spoke with him about his suspicious behavior. At this time no charges will
be pursued.
On July 8, officers were sent to the 200
block of South Franklin Street in reference
to suspicious subjects in the area. Officers
arrived and spoke with the complainant,
who stated that he just chased three subjects who were walking around his vehicle.
Officers located the subjects a short time
later but found that no damage was done
to the complainants vehicle and it was not
entered. A report was made to document
the incident.
On July 8, officers took a report from
a male at the police department after he
found unauthorized charges on his credit
card. The complainant told officers that the
card was used two separate times at different locations in Ohio where he had not
been. A report was taken and the incident
remains under investigation.
On July 10, officers took a report in the
1300 block of Rose Anna Street of damage
done to a vehicle. The complainant reported that her vehicle was parked in front of
the residence overnight and upon returning
to the car in the morning, it was found that
the drivers door mirror was broken off.
On July 11, a complainant came to the
police department to report a theft incident
at her residence. The female told officers
that sometime during the overnight hours,
persons unknown to her stole items from
the exterior of her residence.
On July 12, officers were dispatched
to the 600 block of West Clime Street in
regards to a theft incident. Officers arrived
and spoke with the complainant, who stated
that an item was taken from her overnight
bag by a person known to her. Officers
spoke with that person who admitted that
he had had the item but misplaced it. The
report will be forwarded to the prosecutors
office for review of charges.
On July 12, an officer on patrol conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle after
observing a registration violation on the
vehicle. Upon speaking with the driver,
31-year-old Brian M. Suever of Delphos, a
small amount of marijuana was found in his
possession. Officers issued Suever a citation for the registration violation as well as
possession of marijuana. He will appear in
Lima Municipal Court to face the charges.

Delphos church bus now has a new home, purpose

OTTAWA A bus that was
formerly used as a church bus at
Trinity United Methodist Church in
Delphos now has a new home and
a new purpose. The bus is being
used as a bookmobile for a poverty-stricken area in Tennessee.
Pleasant View United Methodist
Church, rural Bluffton, and Mt.
Cory United Methodist, Mt. Cory,
have been working together for a
year and a half to renovate, add
shelves and stock with books for a
bookmobile to take to White Oak,
Tennessee, an Appalachia area serviced by Henderson Settlement.
Henderson Settlement is a settlement which now has a farm and
multiple ministries to employ and
serve residents in this pocket of
Appalachia.
It was during a visit to Henderson
Settlement in 2013 that the Rev.
Mark Fuerstenau, current pastor of
the two Hancock County churches,
and his mission team were in the
settlement library.
While we were standing in the

library, the director of Henderson
Settlement said he would like to
have a facility like that in White
Oak, Rev. Fuerstenau said, but
added that they didnt have a building to put a library in.
Rev. Fuerstenau said this is when
he had an epiphany experience.
Suddenly the idea of a bookmobile popped into my head, he
said. If they dont have a building,
what about taking the books to the
people?
One person along on the mission
trip suggested an old delivery van
she had stored by her barn.
I was all excited, Rev.
Fuerstenau said. But after that was
checked we were told by a person at
one of my wifes churches the van
was not repairable.
Rev. Fuerstenau put the idea of a
bookmobile for the White Oak area
on a back burner
I knew if the time was right,
God would let me know, he said.
Then about a year and a half ago,
he was traveling through Delphos
when he noticed Trinity United
Methodist Church had their church
bus up for sale. The pastor called

Doug Ditto, the church trustee, to
inquirer about the bus.
He was told the church was
accepting bids on the bus and
urged him to put a bid in if he
was interested. Ditto also told Rev.
Fuerstenau to call church member
Juergen Waldick to find out the
condition of the bus.
Rev. Fuerstenau received a
call from Waldick right before the
before the trustee meeting at which
they were going to award the bus.
He said I can tell you if you
put a battery in it, it will take off.
He said it was in good shape,
Fuerstenau said.
The pastor told Waldick he didnt
have any money to put towards the
bus. Waldick asked what the bus
would be used for.
Id rather see the bus used for
this than as a party bus, Waldick told
Rev. Fuerstenau but he did not know
what the trustees would decide.
I was on pins and needles that
night, Rev. Fuerstenau said. At
10:30 p.m., he received a call from
Ditto. He was told the trustees had
decided to donate the bus to the two

churches to have it transformed into
a bookmobile.

and find out what work it needed
before it would be transported to
Hancock County. The work, including a new radiator and battery, was

OTTAWA The countys two newest
law enforcement officers were sworn in
for duty late Monday morning. Kilo and
Nero, fresh from training in Wapakoneta,
were presented to the public along
with their partners, Sergeant Kevin
Siefker and Deputy Troy Stevenson
during a brief official ceremony at the
Putnam County Sheriffs Office.
With a small group of residents and
county law enforcement officers in attendance, Sheriff Tim Meyer addressed
KALIDA Ohio State University faculty and staff visited

Unverferth Manufacturing on Thursday as part of their Roads
Scholars Tour.
The 50 faculty, community partners and administrators
traveled by bus from COSI in Columbus to the Transportation
Research Center in East Liberty and then Unverferth
Manufacturing. After their visit in Kalida, they planned to head
to the Toledo Zoo still on Thursday. Friday, the tour was going
to take them to the Toledo Museum of Art, The Andersons in
Maumee and Cooper Tire in Findlay.
Weve been doing this since 1997, Ben Johnson, Director
of Media and Public relations at OSU, said. Its a chance for
the faculty and staff to experience industry and community
first-hand.
While at Unverferth, the OSU faculty listened to a short presentation about the company, observed a quick panel of OSU
graduates working at Unverferth and went on a factory tour.
Unverferth is a terrific example of how great ideas really build on themselves, Bruce McPheron, Executive Vice
President and Provost at OSU, said. We have a great relationship with them, we have interns that come up here and alumni
that work here.
The opportunity for faculty and staff to visit Unverferth was
seen as a chance for the staff to further build their relationship
with the company and interact with current and possibly future
alumni. Those at Unverferth saw it as an opportunity to show
the staff what their students will do upon graduation.
The biggest thing is the collaboration between the two places to show them what the expectations are in the real world,

Librarys Rist continues research on book drop

DELPHOS Library Director Kelly
Rist continues her research into installing a drive-through book drop west of
the First Edition Building on West First
Street.
Rist told library board members
Wednesday the property line for the
library campus had been verified and the
group took a short trip outside to look at
the markers and get a visual of where the
drop box would be installed.
We are looking at a box patrons can
drop most of our materials in for return,
Rist said. It wont be just for books.
They can also put DVDs, CDs and other
items in the box as well.
The box will include a weighted spring
system so the baskets inside lower as
items are deposited, reducing the chance
of damaged goods.

North Jefferson Street will become oneway with vehicles exiting onto West
First Street via an existing alley that runs
parallel to the First Edition Building. The
book drop will eliminate two spaces in
the parking lot.
Rist started putting together plans for
the new outside return system when several patrons had announced they couldnt
get to the drop box on the north side of
the building due to physical restrictions.
We do have users who are handicapped and cant make it up the stairs to
the drop box on the front of the library,
Rist explained. We are looking into
installing a ramp at the front entrance

Yet another craze from the digital world

has taken hold. Pokemon GO has children and
young adults alike scrambling around their
communities and beyond to capture virtual
characters to amass a team, find a gym and
capture more virtual characters.
I know it sounds silly to most but let me
preface the rest of the column by saying I
think its kinda cool.
I remember Pokemon the first go-round.
Kids were whipping out thick decks of cards
and would play for hours. Everyone wanted
to see each others decks and compare what
characters they each had. It was a kiddie version of Magic.
Now I am 50 and some of this digital business still has me mystified when I try to think
about what is happening while Im working
on a computer. I had an Atari and thought
Sonic the Hedgehog was the coolest little
dude ever. I am attracted to it but at the same
time, cautious.
That line of thinking definitely applies
here.
While the game is giving teens and tweens
something to do that includes going outside
and getting fresh air and perhaps some exercise, their noses are pressed to their phones
and they arent always paying attention to
their surroundings. People are getting hurt.
Homeowners arent always appreciative of
kids running through their yards. One persons
fun isnt always amusing to someone else.
And dont even get me started on someone
playing Pokemon GO while they are driving.
What about this sounds like something you
should do?
For the most part, I feel like its just a bit of
fun and distraction.

Herald intern Kristi has a very good story
in todays paper about the whole Pokemon
GO business. As any good journalist does, one
of her resources was from the app she downloaded on her phone. It had just finished when
she turned to me and said in a hushed voice,
Theres one in the other room!
We jumped up and went into the graphics
department and sure enough, there was a
Pokemon character by the filing cabinet.
Get it, we all told her.
After a few attempts, she was successful
in capturing the little critter and we all had a
good chuckle. What the heck was a Pokemon
doing in the graphics room?
Still pretty cool and yes, something that
makes me go hmmmm.
Love it, hate it, or something in between, I
think well be hearing about this until the next
thing comes along. Could be tomorrow, could
be next week, could be a month from now. But
in the meantime, Go Yellow! Just because
that nice kid in my driveway was the first one
to invite me on to a team.

Wednesday evening everyone is taking it easy tonight. Mose, daughters Susan
and Verena, and son Benjamin went fishing. We put in a long day so it was relaxing
to them to go take the boat on the lake. The
rest of us are outside around a campfire. It
is so peaceful out here. We had a nice day
to do laundry. It was extra big since we
just arrived home from our trip last night
around 7:30 p.m.
We left at 6:00 a.m. Saturday morning
with our whole family. We headed north to
Hersey, Michigan, to Joes sister Christine
and husband Jake for a family gathering. Seven out of twelve siblings were
there. People came from Tennessee, Ohio,
Indiana, and Michigan. We were served a
delicious dinner. On the menu were mashed
potatoes and gravy, buttered peas, green
beans, barbecued chicken, several different
varieties of cheese, pie (cherry, pecan, and
apple), and ice cream. Everyone brought
snacks for the afternoon. A lot of the families went Friday already. Before we prayed
to eat, we sang four songs together. Tables
were set up in the basement so there was
enough room to sit. I dont have an accurate count but I think there were around 70
people that could attend.
Some played volleyball and other
games, while others just visited. We left
around 3:15 p.m. to drive another three
plus hours. We stayed at a motel across
the Mackinac Bridge. We drove on up to
see the Soo Locks and then the Upper and
Lower Tahquamenon Falls. What a sight
to see! All such wonders of Gods artistic
touch. How relaxing it was to hear the
water running. We rented row boats so we
could get closer to the falls and also walked

around some in the water.
We also stopped at Deer Ranch, Mystery
Spot, and Garlyn Zoo. We watched the fireworks from the front lawn of the motel on
the fourth of July. And before we started for
home we went parasailing. But I just stayed
on the boat and watched the others. The
rope for the parachute goes out 300 feet. It
was an exciting adventure for the ones that
went up. My husband Joe and son Kevin
went up together. Kevin looked a little
scared at first, but still enjoyed the ride.
It is always nice to take a break from
work and get away for a while. I was ready
to get back home. Theres no place like
home even though coming home meant
resuming work. Joe, Susan, and Benjamin
are all off work this week for the July 4
vacation week. Susans wedding is just four
weeks away so we need to get everything
done that we can.
Daughter Elizabeth has been a great
help to me with getting the sewing done for
the wedding. We have to cut out and sew
pants for Kevin yet, and I need to sew my
own dress. Its cut out and my goal is to get
that sewn next week, but Im behind on my
goals a lot lately.
Daughter Loretta is sixteen now and can
join the youth group. It seems empty when
they leave for the community building to
gather with the youth on Saturday evenings. The three youngest children are the
only ones home with Joe and I.
Mose, Susan, Verena, and Benjamin are
back from fishing now. They didnt catch
any but had a relaxing time on the lake.
Corn detasseling has started in this area.
Son Joseph isnt old enough to sign up
for it yet. They have to be fourteen years
old to go now. It used to be thirteen when

humidity is really high so I can imagine
the hot days they will have walking those
corn fields.
Jacob (sister Emmas husband) and sons
did our chores for us while we were gone.
We really appreciated that. I know it had to
take extra time to come over twice a day
to milk our cow Bessie and do the other
chores. A big thank-you to them! Hopefully
we can return the favor sometime.

Thunder Cake
1 cup shortening
1 3/4 cups sugar
1 cup cold water
1 teaspoon vanilla
1/3 cup tomato pure
3 eggs, separated
2 1/2 cups flour
1 1/2 teaspoons soda
1/2 cup cocoa
1 teaspoon salt
Cream together (adding one at a time)
shortening, sugar, vanilla, water, and tomato pure. Blend in egg yolks. Beat egg
whites until stiff then fold into shortening
mixture. Into a medium bowl sift flour,
soda, cocoa, and salt then mix into creamy
mixture. Bake at 350 degrees for 35 to 40
minutes in 2 greased and floured 8 1/2-inch
round pans.

Crumb-Topped Haddock
2 pounds haddock or cod fillets
1 can condensed cream of shrimp soup, undiluted
1 teaspoon grated onion
1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
1 cup crushed Ritz crackers (about 25 crackers)
Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Arrange fillets in
a greased 13x9-in. baking dish. Combine soup,
onion and Worcestershire sauce; pour over fish.
Bake, uncovered, 20 minutes. Sprinkle with
cracker crumbs. Bake 15 minutes longer or until
fish flakes easily with a fork. Yield: 6 servings.
Tropical Lime Ice Cream Pie
Crust:
2 cups crisp coconut cookie crumbs
1/3 margarine, melted
Filling:
3 cups lime sherbet, softened
3 cups vanilla ice cream, softened
1 teaspoon grated lime peel, if desired
In medium bowl, combine crust ingredients;
mix well. Reserve 1 tablespoon crumb mixture for
topping. Press remaining crumb mixture lightly in
bottom and up sides of ungreased 9-inch pie pan.
In large bowl, combine sherbet, ice cream and
lime peel; blend until well mixed. Spoon into
crust-lined pan, spreading evenly. Sprinkle with
reserved crumb mixture. Freeze at least 2 hours
or until firm.
To serve, let pie stand at room temperature for
about 10 minutes before cutting into wedges.

First is keep your soil covered. A covered soil
holds more water by binding to soil organic
matter (SOM) and loses less water to runoff
and evaporation. SOM increases when soil is
covered by vegetation and dead plant material
residue. SOM holds 18-20 times its weight in
water and recycles nutrients for plants to use.
One percent SOM in the top six inches of soil
holds approximately 27,000 gallons or 1 acreinch water. In addition, 1% SOM holds about
1,000# of nitrogen and roughly 100# each of
phosphorus, potassium, and sulfur.
Soil microorganisms exist in large numbers as
long as there is a carbon source for energy. There
are more microbes in a teaspoon of soil than there
are people on the earth. Bacteria, due to their
large numbers yet small size, tend to dominate
in most tilled soils. Fungi populations may be 50
times smaller, but due to their larger size, they
are similar in biomass to bacteria in undisturbed
soil. Fungi are important for decomposing hard to

digest organic compounds (lignin) while bacteria
tend to decompose the readily available and easy
to digest organic compounds (sugars, proteins).
Healthy productive agricultural soils have a balance of bacterial and fungal species and diversity
in microbial populations.
A cover crop is needed on the soil 24 hours a
day, seven days a week to build SOM, hold water
and stop erosion. Continuous live or dead cover
helps maintain soil health and protects it from
heat and raindrop impact. SOM retains soil nutrients and when there is little or no SOM, nitrogen
and phosphorus are leached from the soil. The
nitrates and soluble reactive phosphorus are
leached into ground water or carried into ponds,
lakes and streams by run-off water.
Second, do not disturb the soil. Do not disturb means to avoid tillage. In No-till fields,
water infiltrates through pores without destroying aggregate integrity. The SOM in no-till soils
absorbs and hold water. One of the key methods
of restoring soil health is to let nature do its work
by avoiding tillage. Most SOM comes from roots
and tillage destroys SOM by oxidizing (adding
oxygen) to the soil, changing the soil microbial
community, especially bacteria.
Bacteria have incredible ability to digest lots

of carbon and multiply rapidly. It is decomposition gone wrong, just like cancer devours
the human body and causes it to malfunction.
Tillage stimulates the soil bacteria to feed on the
body (the soil structure) and soil aggregation is
diminished, so soils become harder and compacted. When this happens, soils do not store
water and nutrients efficiently and soil function
declines.
In addition to SOM and microorganisms,
a healthy soil is full of earthworms. Soil is
normally inhabited with earthworms when it
contains SOM. Earthworms are major decomposers of dead organic matter and derive their
nutrition from bacteria and fungi that grow on
it. Earthworms dramatically alter soil structure,
water movement, nutrient dynamics and plant
growth. They are not essential to all healthy
soils, but their presence is usually an indicator of
a healthy system. Earthworms perform several
beneficial soil functions including 1) Mix and
aggregate soil, 2) Stimulate microbial activity, 3)
Increase infiltration, 4) Improve water-holding
capacity, 5) Provide channels for root growth,
and 6) Bury and shred plant residue.
The third key point is to use covers and crop
rotation to feed and protect your soil. A Michigan

State study found that each additional crop added
an additional 10% to yield for each crop grown.
Longer crop rotations, especially with cover
crops, add plant and microbial diversity and
increases crop yields long-term. The constant
change in crops from crop rotation and diverse
cover crops prevent pests (insects, weeds, diseases) from becoming dominant. Soil microbes
keep soil nutrients recycling in a plant-available
form. Microbes are just soluble bags of fertilizer
and live plants have 1,000-2,000 times more
microbes than bare soil.
Fourth, develop a soil health management
plan which is a system of practices needed to
enhance soil function and improves or sustains
water quality, air quality, energy efficiency
and wildlife habitat. In addition, it provides
environmental, economic, health, and societal benefits. Implementation of a soil health
plan saves energy by using less fuel for tillage and nutrient cycling is maximized. It also
saves water and increases drought tolerance by
improving infiltration and water holding capacity as SOM increases. As soil health is improved,
plants become healthier, which increases farmer
income sustainability.

Lake Erie
Regulations to Remember: The daily
bag limit for walleye in Ohio waters of Lake
Erie is 6 fish per angler; minimum size limit
is 15 inches. The daily bag limit for yellow perch is 30 fish per angler in all Ohio
waters of Lake Erie. The trout and salmon
daily bag limit is 5 fish per angler through
Aug. 31; minimum size limit is 12 inches.
Black bass (largemouth and smallmouth
bass): the daily bag limit is 5 fish per angler
with a 14-inch minimum size limit.
Western Basin
Walleye: Walleye fishing has been hit or
miss lately. Many being caught have been
below the 15-inch size limit, primarily from
the 2014 year class. The best locations have
been the Toledo water intake, west of West
Sister Island, Big Pickerel Reef, near C
and G buoys of the Camp Perry firing
range and north of Green Island. Most fish
have been caught by trolling with spoons
or worm harnesses and by casting with
weight-forward spinners or mayfly rigs.
Yellow Perch: Yellow perch have been
caught near the Toledo harbor light, around
the Toledo water intake, northwest of A
can of the Camp Perry firing range, west of
Rattlesnake Island, south of Ballast Island
and southwest of Kelleys Island. Perch
spreaders with shiners fished near the bottom
produce the most fish.
Largemouth Bass: Largemouth bass
have been caught in harbors and along the
main lake shoreline around Catawba and
Marblehead using drop-shot rigs, tube jigs
and crankbaits.
Central Basin
Walleye: Some walleye have been caught
off Sawmill Creek, off Cranberry Creek
and at the weather buoy north of Vermilion
near the Canadian border. Good fishing
was reported in 42-45 feet of water north of
Cleveland, in 28-32 feet of water northeast of
Wildwood Park and in 65-74 feet northeast
of Geneva and north of Ashtabula. Anglers
are trolling stick baits or harnesses with
dipsy divers or planer boards with weights or
jet divers. The best colors have been purple,
chartreuse and pink.
Wildlife Ohio
Yellow Perch: Yellow perch fishing has
been slow recently. The best areas have
been off the Vermilion River and in 42 feet
north-northwest of Gordon Park. There were
a few good reports in 49 feet northeast of
Geneva and in 48 feet north of Conneaut.
Perch spreaders with shiners fished near the
bottom produce the most fish.
Smallmouth Bass: Fishing has been
excellent in 10-30 feet around the harbor
areas in Cleveland, Fairport Harbor, Geneva,
Ashtabula and Conneaut using drop-shot
rigs, tube jigs, spinners, crankbaits, leeches
and crayfish.
The Lake Erie water temperature is 77
off Toledo and 73 off Cleveland, according
to the nearshore marine forecast.

New Ohio record Bowfin (Bowfishing

Division) certified
A new Ohio record Bowfin taken
by bowfishing has been certified by the
Outdoor Writers of Ohio State Record Fish
Committee.
The new state record Bowfin, weighing
9.20 pounds, was caught by Tim Makowski
of Massillon in Mogadore Reservoir.
Makowski arrowed the Bowfin July 2, 2016.
The record Bowfin is 29-5/8 inches long and
14-1/2 inches in girth.
His catch replaces the previous state
bowfishing record Bowfin that was arrowed
in East Harbor (Lake Erie) by John Ehrman
on April 30, 1989, weighing 8.79 pounds and
measuring 31 inches long. Ohios record fish
are determined on the basis of weight only.
Ohios state record fish are certified by the
Outdoor Writers of Ohio State Record Fish
Committee with assistance from fisheries
biologists with the Ohio Division of Wildlife.
Biologists Phil Hillman, Chris Aman and
Curt Wagner from the Ohio Division of
Wildlife District 3 office in Akron confirmed
the identification of Makowskis catch.

Lottery underway for beginning FlyFishing Clinics
FINDLAY Anglers interested in learn-
ing the art of fly-fishing and practicing their

skills on a half-mile section of Cold Creek
at the Castalia State Fish Hatchery in Erie
County are encouraged to enter a lottery for
beginning fly-fishing clinics, according to
the Ohio Department of Natural Resources
(ODNR).
There are 125 slots available for the
popular program. Sessions will be held on
Fridays from Sept. 2 through Oct. 7, with the
exception of Sept. 23. Submissions for the
lottery must be postmarked by Aug. 13.
In addition to fly-fishing instruction by
ODNR Division of Wildlife staff and volunteers, attendees will be able to test their
newly acquired skills by fishing for rainbow
trout found in Cold Creek. Anglers may also
encounter an occasional brown trout.
Instruction will be from 8 a.m. until noon
or 1-5 p.m. on Sept. 2, Sept. 9, Sept. 16, Sept.
30 and Oct. 7.
To apply, applicants must submit a postcard listing their: name, address, Customer
ID number and phone number. The applicant
may bring one guest. Only one postcard per
applicant is allowed and no duplicates may
be submitted. Postcards should be sent to:

Attention: Beginner Fly Fishing Clinics.
Successful applicants will receive an
assigned session date and time. Permits are
nontransferable. All anglers age 16 and older

fishing licenses go toward conserving and
restoring habitat, enforcement of fishing regulations, hatchery operations, fish stocking
in public fishing areas, and enhancement of
research and educational outreach.

of Van Wert County Fair
All records for attendance
on any prior opening day
were broken Tuesday by the
Van Wert County Fair. It was
the mecca for thongs of people, many from Delphos going to the grounds. The crowd
was estimated at between
12,000 to 14,000.
Attendance figures for
Monday and Tuesday were
far in excess of former years.
In 1914 the Monday receipts
were $376 and for Tuesday of
that year $1,613.30 for combined total of $1,989.30.
The receipts for Monday,
this year were $303, somewhat less than last year, owing to the continuous downpour of rain which hampered
the fair on opening day.
On Tues. the receipts were
$2,737.40 making a total of
$3,646 for the two days, or a
gain of $1,051.10. The grandstand receipts are by far the
largest in the past five years.
The main attractions Tuesday were the automobile
and motorcycle races, two
accidents tending to lend additional excitement to these
events. The first accident occurred during the first heat of
the 25 miles free-for-all automobile race. In rounding the
west turn, the left front wheel
of the Saxon car, driven by
Max Bowen suddenly collapsed and acting as a spike
in the ground, threw the car
completely over and hurled
Bowen outside the track with
no injuries except a scratched
elbow and forehead, a bruised
thigh and a general shaking
up. His escape from death
was considered remarkable.
The car was a complete
wreck.
The other accident occurred when Dudley Henderson attempted to pass the
Lima Sunbeam at the start of
the last heat of the 25 mile
race. The crank flew back and
dislocated his wrist.

because his engine was not

Wednesdays
program
opened with the awarding
of premiums on grade draft,
percheon, Clydesdale and
Belgian horses, cattle, poultry, sheep, swine and in all
departments. At 9 oclock
there was a band concert at
the horse ring which was followed by the boys stock judging contest.
At 10 oclock the first session the Womens Congress
convened in Grange Hall. At
10:15 the Second Regiment
band gave a concert, assisted
by Charlette M. Brand and
Furney Carr. The races started promptly at 1 oclock and

held at 7 p.m. According to James Mesker, committeeman, 50
percent attendance of all 80 members of the class of 1956 will

In womens softball Wednesday evening, Darlenes came
from behind to defeat Kentucky Fried Chicken, 10 to 9. Offensively, Margaret Hedrick went three for three for Darlenes.

Knights of Columbus, Council No. 1362 will install officers
at 8:30 p.m. at the K of C Hall, July 18, according to Vernon
R. Kill, Grand Knight. The installation will be conducted by
District Deputy Melvin Hempfling. The meeting which is for
wives and guests will be followed by a dance. Furnishing music for the dance will be the Bygones.
Judge Cathryn Harrington of Van Wert was the guest speaker
for the Delphos Rotary Club Wednesday noon at NuMaudes
Restaurant. Judge Harrington spoke on the subject of juvenile
court and of the problem of juvenile delinquency. The speaker
was introduced by Chief of Police Norbert W. Grewe, who was

It was moving day Monday for the Peoples National Bank as
the initial step was taken in the slated move this year into their
brand new banking quarters. The banking building, corner of
Second Main street, is to be completely renovated, both interior and exterior, according to Elmer Scherger, cashier of the
92-year-old financial institution.
First round of play has ended in the adult Blooper Softball
League here, except for a game between Sons Bar and the Jaycees. The Sons Bar nine currently is in first place in the league
with a 4-0 record but should the Jaycees win their first game of
the season over Sons ball club, it would be a tie in first round
of play for Sons and Gleskens. With the first set of games
played in the first round of action, three teams are tied for first
place Harolds Bar, Chew Chew Inn and Gieskens.

The Japanese cabinet resigned Wednesday and Emperor Hirohito arranged to return immediately to Tokyo from his summer villa at Hayama. The official Domel News Agency said
that the cabinet resigned in order to enable the government

America, has returned from Washington, D. C., after being in
attendance at the National Convention of the Catholic Daughters of America. The biennial convention from July 7-11, was

in the membership campaign during the last two years and also
had the largest net gain of any state in the union.
The Fourth of July may be the traditional turning point in
the major league pennant races, but, as far as the New York
Yankees and Cleveland Indians are concerned, possession of
the 1941 American League flag may be decided in the threegame series which begins in Cleveland Wednesday. Southpaw
Marius Russo is slated to match curves with the Indians big

the owner of the company called. When Rev.
Fuerstenau told him what
the churches were doing,
the owner asked if they
were fussy about color.
I told him no, and that
we were not on a big budget, Rev. Fuerstenau said.
It turned out the owner of
the business was also a
United Methodist member
and worked out a special
deal on the shelving and
brackets for the bookmobile. He explained that he

On Sunday, a special
consecration service was
held at both churches to
bless the bookmobile. The
trailer and bookmobile left
on their journey Monday to
White Oaks.
This is a place that has
about 50 percent unemployment, Rev. Fuerstenau said.
He said the county library
has agreed to hire and provide a driver for the bookmobile.

We just finished certification Friday,

Siefker said. I start my shift tonight with
Kilo. Deputy Stevenson and I are going to
get with Hancock County Sheriffs Office;
they have a training group over there every
Monday night for four hours. Theres a
minimum of 16 hours per month of continuing training, so were going to get with
their training group. Its never ending, so
far as their training.
While sworn-in on Monday, partners
Stevenson and Nero already worked over
the weekend, contributing to two drug-related investigations.
We had an overdose and we got consent to search a house in Blanchard Park,
Stevenson explained. Nero indicated on a
spoon with residue on it. And last night, he
hit on a car during a traffic stop and there
was a scale with marijuana residue on it.
These two incidents, while relatively
minor, serve as an indicator of how effective the K9s could prove to be in just one
aspect of their duties: addressing a growing drug abuse concern. The two dogs will
also serve as protectors of their partners
and other law enforcement officers, assist
with search and rescue and, undoubtedly, in efforts to improve public relations

The two K9 deputies come to Putnam
County as a consequence of a monthslong campaign on the part of Meyer and
the Putnam County Sheriffs Office. With
little or no funding available through the
commissioners office, a direct appeal was
made to county residents and businesses
to gain the roughly $15,000 necessary to
buy and train each individual dog. While
there was some initial concern about how
the public might respond, those concerns
proved groundless as donations rolled in.
Im just overwhelmed by the response
from the community, Meyer said. Im
just tickled to death.
In total, fundraising efforts have resulted in the accumulation of over $48,000,
considerably more than the $30,000 outlay
necessary to acquire and train two K9 deputies. The overage, Meyer asserted, will
remain in a fund dedicated to the K9s.
It will be used in the care and maintenance of the dogs going forward, he said.
Theoretically, we could even see another
K9 in the future. I want to get these two
out and get them working. Once we feel
comfortable with where were at, well
cross that bridge.

before being pulled from the courtroom, struggling with the sheriffs deputies detaining him.
The jury deliberated this case for several
hours, which tells us they spent a lot of time considering each piece of evidence, carefully considering the case to make sure they were being

Laufs final outburst, Schroeder added, We had
a good opportunity over the course of this entire
prosecution to see that side of him. Quite frankly,
law enforcement was anticipating an even more

seek charges against the mother.
Lauf faces a possible term of 33 years to life in
prison on both charges should the court choose to
run the two sentences consecutively. Sentencing
will take place sometime in the next four to six
weeks.

have reacted, Schroeder said. But thats a red
herring because thats what he wants you to talk
about back in that room. The question is not
what would you do if you were the mom, the
question is how would you deliberate the case if
this was your daughter. What could (Jane Doe)
have done other than disclose it multiple times,
but she wasnt taken out of the situation and it
continued. If this hadnt happened to her, she
wouldnt have been in here on this witness stand
talking about it.
With regard to the illegal use of a minor
charge, thumbnail images of the girl in the nude
were forensically recovered from Laufs cell
phone. The defense implied that the images were
sent to Lauf by the child, an argument Schroeder
adamantly refuted.

images and how they got on the phone,
Schroeder said. You were given a couple of
options. One is that they were taken from some
device, sent to that phone which would have
