The Learning Model Process Worksheet

Prepare
Redford________

Name _McKenzie

1. Locate a scripture or a quote from a Church leader that talks about the
importance of preparing. Write the scripture or quote and explain how
it applies to you as a college student at BYU-Idaho.
Doctrine and Covenants 38:30 says but if ye are prepared ye shall not
fear. This is talking about the second coming, but I think it relates to a
college student at BYU-I. This is, because I have noticed that when I am
prepared for class and for tests, I am confident and there is no fear.
2. Discuss how being prepared for class can benefit your classmates, and
how not being prepared for class can cheat your classmates. Use good
examples to support what you say.
When you are prepared for class you wont have to stop and ask your
teacher or the students around you questions about the preparation.
For example in my Anatomy and Physiology class everyone came to
class prepared and the class would go smooth. We had great
discussions and always learned a lot. When you come to class
unprepared you take time from your teacher teaching to help you get
caught up to speed. I have never experienced this or seen it happen to
anyone, but I have heard of people coming to class and asking
questions that would have been answered if they prepared before they
came to class.

3. Discuss the difference between preparation and homework. List the

differences below.
Preparation when you prepare yourself to learn a new concept that will
be taught in class. Homework is when you are a taught a new concept
and then practice that concept and really learn it.

4. Explain one thing that you can do to better prepare yourself in EACH
area identified below.
a. Spiritual Preparation (i.e. being worthy to be taught by the Holy
Ghost)

Before I study, I will pray and ask for the Holy Ghost to be
present and guide me in my learning.
b. Physical Preparation (i.e. getting enough sleep and eating well)
One thing I could do better is going to bed early, so I can wake
up early. This way I wont be tired during the day and I can focus.
c. Academic Preparation (i.e. thoughtfully completing pre-class
assignments)
I will study my preparation assignments all the way through and
really study them.
d. Emotional Preparation (i.e. not being preoccupied with
relationship issues)
While I study, I will put emotional problems aside and worry
about them later.
e. Social Preparation (i.e. practicing working with others)
I will find a group to study with, so I will have other people to
look to for help and I will also be able to help them.
5. How could teachers help students to come more prepared?
Teachers can help students to come to class more prepared by giving
them materials to study. They can also offer to help the students
prepare with them before class. (I actually had a chemistry teacher do
this.)
Teach One Another

1. Locate a scripture or a quote from a Church leader that talks about

teaching one another. Write the scripture or quote and explain how it
applies to you as a college student at BYU-Idaho.
Doctrine and Covenants 88:77 And I give unto you a commandment that
you shall ateach one another the bdoctrine of the kingdom. This relates to
students at BYU-I, because we know that we take our knowledge with us
when we leave earth, so we should be helping others gain as much
knowledge as they can by teaching them.

2. Write about a personal experience you had preparing and teaching

something and explain how teaching helps you learn.
My husband and I took chemistry together one semester. I prepared for
one of our classes better than my husband did. After class he asked me to
explain it to him better. I did and I noticed that when it came time for that
unit test, this particular concept I knew really well, because I studied it
and taught it to someone else. Teaching others is the best learning tool for
yourself.

discussions. I always stay quiet, but I am going to work on actually
talking, so I can help others learn.

Ponder and Prove

1. Locate a scripture or a quote from a Church leader that talks about

pondering and proving. Write the scripture or quote and explain how it
applies to you as a college student at BYU-Idaho.
Elder Bednar said, For your happiness and protection, I invite you to
study more diligently the doctrine of the plan of salvationand to
prayerfully ponder the truths we have reviewed. This applies to us
students, because if we want to find the truth we are being taught then
through pondering it we will find truth, plus happiness and protection.
2. Write about a time in your life in which you really pondered over
something. What were the circumstances surrounding this event?
What kind of impression did this experience have on your life?
There have been many times in my life that I have really pondered over
something. One time really sticks out to me. It was my sophomore year of
high school and I was trying to study for finals. I was getting frustrated
because I wasnt retaining anything I was studying. So I stopped and grabbed
my scriptures. I wanted to know why getting an education was so important.
I sat and pondered the scriptures for a while about why education was
important. I soon realized that the knowledge I gain in this life I get to take to
the next. This impression has changed my life so much. I want to have a
great knowledge of lots of things. I take school and learning serious. I dont
have as hard of time learning, because I know it will help me always.
3. Discuss how pondering can facilitate the following three items. Choose
one of the three reasons for pondering and give a personal example of
when the reason proved true.
1. Learn by the Spirit- By pondering, the Spirit will lead you to the
truth.
2. Increase Understanding- By pondering you will gain a better
understanding of what you are learning.
3. Improve Retention- By taking the time to ponder a concept,
you will have a much better chance of retaining it.
Example: When I was getting ready to get married to my husband, I
decided to really ponder temple marriages. By the time my wedding
came, I fully understood what covenant I was making.
4. Discuss how proving contributes to the following three items. Choose
one of the three reasons for proving and give a personal example of
when that reason proved true.
1. Opportunity to Show Competence- By proving this you will
show yourself and others that you understand it.
2. Vehicle to Gain Confidence- By proving that you understand,
you will gain a confidence from your knowledge.

3. Opportunity to Increase Retention- When you prove that you

know something you will repeat it, so it is another chance for you
to retain it.
Example: When I was studying Anatomy and Physiology I wanted to
showed my husband how much I knew. I took the time to name every muscle
in the body. When it came time to the test I was so confident that I didnt
worry or stress.
5. Review the following video:
http://www2.byui.edu/StudySkills/videos/memory.htm Knowing about
Spaced Review -- In a perfect world, what would be the best way to
schedule your classes in the future? Why?
I couldnt get the video to work, but I have heard many times that after
class you should review right after class for at least 15 minutes. The
first hour after class you should review. This means that in the future
you should spread your classes out by two hours. This way you go to
class for an hour and then after class you can study and take your time
reviewing what you learned in class.
