NELSON: UTRGV MOBILE CLINIC WILL CHANGE LIVES OF COLONIA
FAMILIES
A new mobile health clinic purchased by UT-Rio Grande Valley thanks to a
grant from United Health Foundation cost $425,000. Dr. Linda S. Nelson,
senior director of clinical operations for the UTRGV School of Medicine,
says the expenditure will be worth every penny if it saves just one life in
the Valley's colonias. "This mobile clinic cost $425,000, fitted out with all
the dental equipment and the lab equipment. She is worth every bit of it.
If I can change the health of one person in the community, it is worth
every penny," said Nelson, who will set the schedule for the mobile clinic.

SECOND YEAR DHR RESIDENTS DISCUSS HEALTHCARE IN RGV
The first class of graduate medical education residents at Doctors Hospital
at Renaissance told the second class what it is like to practice medicine in
the Rio Grande Valley at a White Coat Ceremony. Testimony was given by
Alejandro Bocanegra, MD, a second year resident practicing family
medicine, Clint Merritt, MD, a second year resident practicing general
surgery, Kara Zabelny, DO, a second year resident practicing internal
medicine, and Zishan Hirani, MD, a second year resident practicing
obstetrics and gynecology.

BAILEY: MEDICAL RESIDENTS CAN HAVE BIG IMPACT IN RGV
UT-Rio Grande Valley President Guy Bailey says medical residents can
have a bigger impact in the Valley than they can in other parts of the
country. Bailey spoke about the future of general medical education at a
White Coat Ceremony hosted by Doctors Hospital at Renaissance and held

at the Edinburg Conference at Renaissance. He started by congratulating

incoming DHR residents for successfully completing their studies at
medical school and welcomed them to the Valley.

UTRGV AIMS TO IMPROVE ACCESS TO HEALTHCARE FOR UNDERSERVED
State Senator Eddie Lucio says the unity displayed by the Rio Grande
Valley's legislative delegation, along with collaboration between the
region's public and private sectors, has led to improved healthcare for
those most in need. Lucio was present for last Friday's ribbon-cutting
ceremony for a new UT-Rio Grande Valley community primary care clinic
in Harlingen. The university opened a similar clinic in McAllen the day
before.

UTRGV AIMS TO BECOME BILINGUAL, BI-CULTURAL, BI-LITERATE
INSTITUTION
Evidence of UT-Rio Grande Valley's commitment to becoming a fully
integrated bilingual, bi-cultural, and bi-literate university is the formation
of the B3 Institute, says UTRGV Provost Havidan Rodriguez. The B3
Institute will be led by Professor Francisco Guajardo, who graduated from
Edcouch-Elsa High School and the University of Texas at Austin, and is
founder of the Llano Grande Center and the Community Learning
Exchange.

UTRGV SEEKS CARNEGIE CLASSIFICATION AS COMMUNITY ENGAGED
INSTITUTION
The University of Texas-Rio Grande Valley is seeking classification from
the Carnegie Foundation for its community engagement work. UTRGV
Provost Havidan Rodriguez confirmed an application to Carnegie was being
developed in an in-depth interview with the Rio Grande Guardian about
the university's new strategic plan.
