HBCU BILL PROTEST

STUDENTS ARE RALLYING AGAINST SENATE BILL 873.
THE BILL WOULD LOWER TUITION AT 5 STATE INSTITUTIONS, THREE OF WHICH ARE
HISTORICALLY BLACK COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES, OR HBCUS.
REPORTER ALEX BURCH SPOKE WITH THOSE INVOLVED AND HAS THE STORY.

THE POSSIBILITY OF CHEAPER TUITION ISNT MAKING STUDENTS AS HAPPY AS
NORTH CAROLINA LAWMAKERS THOUGHT IT WOULD.
STUDENTS AND ALUMNI FROM HBCUS GATHERED TO PROTEST THE BILL TODAY. THEY
SAY THEIR SCHOOLS ARE ALREADY UNDERFUNDED.

A lot of people think the tuition deduction will be great. But what it will do is cause a lot of
HBCUs to go out of business, so we need to shut it down.

IF PASSED, THE BILL COULD LOWER COSTS TO AS LITTLE AS 500 DOLLARS.

Its not about the tuition decrease; its more about the effectiveness of being able to maintain
the institutions.

At this point, lawmakers arent sure if the bill will go to committee, or die altogether.

LAWMAKERS SAY THEY PROPOSED THE BILL TO HELP MORE STUDENTS AFFORD TO
GO TO SCHOOL. BUT PROTESTERS ARE CONCERNED THAT THE STATE MAY NOT
REPLACE THOSE LOT FUNDS PROPERLY. **

Kids who go to these schools have had parents who have gone to HBCUs, who have HBCUs
in their blood. Its also a lot of kids who may not have wanted to go to other schools per say,
