ADVANTAGES OF RADIO AS AN INSTRUCTIONAL

TOOL
The following advantages of radio as an instructional medium
are the following:
1. It can be used anywhere with or without electricity.
2. It is one of the means of bringing up-to-date news In the
political, social, economic and cultural problems and issues
which can be the basis of classroom discussions.
3. It is convenient, easy, and economical way of getting ideas
and various views from experts.
4. It can provide examples of good and bad speeches.
5. It can provide vicarious experiences with travel and daily
chores to the listeners.
6. It is adaptable to either large or small audience in widely
separated areas.

While the radio has its potentials as an instructional medium


there are certain limitations.
1. It is a one-way communication medium. Teachers and
students cannot ask the radio teacher or announcer to clarify
certain points.
2. Programs must be used on schedule because the teacher
cannot control the timing lessons.
3. In some cases, radio broadcasts may not be directly related
to the lesson for the day. It takes creativity and intelligence
on the part of the teacher to correlate radio broadcasts with
the subject matter for the day.
4. It requires listening skills on the part of the students since it
is solely an audio medium.
5. Radio use entails some provisions for expenses-equipment
maintenance such as batteries and spare parts.
