Those against factory farm find little support

BY KAY LOUTH
DHI Media Correspondent
news@delphosherald.com

SPENCERVILLE Two meetings with

two political entities in Spencerville has
not resulted in any, or very little, support for Spencerville Citizens Against
Factory Farms. Last week, SCAFF met with
Spencerville Village Council and the results
were less than satisfying to SCAFF.
The organization is opposed to the installation of a 2.2-million-chicken mega-farm
just on the edge of Monticello. Monticello is
a small, quiet hamlet about five miles west
of Spencerville on St. Rt. 116.
Brett Rider, one of the founding members of SCAFF, said council listened to what
they had to say but added he felt Mayor P.J.
Johnson seemed a little cold, in Riders per-

sonal opinion.
To my knowledge, they did not commit.
Just from what I gathered there, I dont think
thats going to happen, Rider said.
The mayor could not be reached for
comment.
Thursday night, SCAFF brought their
argument to the Spencerville Schools Board
of Education
Much of SCAFFs presentation by Steve
Simindinger, one of the opposition leaders, centered around what SCAFF says
are discrepancies in Pine Valley Farms
permit application to the Ohio Department
of Agriculture. Simindinger told the board
there were discrepancies in the water and
manure numbers presented to the ODA
and also presented a news article from a
Mercer County newspaper showing that
Jim and Pam Fleck, part-owners of Pine

Valley Farms, were fined almost $100,000

for building an unpermitted manure storage
barn for cattle. The article stated that the
settlement amount would be reduced when
the Flecks applied for a permit. The article
stated Fleck did not know he had to apply
for the permit.
The proposed mega-farm is situated on
an aquifer that supplies water for multiple
communities in the area and SCAFF is concerned about the farms water usage and the
potential of an accidental discharge that may
pollute the aquifer. They are also concerned
that the use of so much water may lessen the
water volume in the aquifer.
Another concern SCAFF told the board
regarded truck traffic on SR 116, which
is estimated to be 120 to 150 semis each
week, noting that much truck traffic poses a
safety hazard to the children. Monticello is

in Jennings Township, which is part of the

Spencerville School District.
Other concerns presented included quality of life, flies, odor, the cost of water filtration and more.
This is something our kids are going to
have to deal with and our kids kids are going
to have to deal with, Simindinger said.
Simindinger was told by ODAs Kevin
Elder, who oversees the permitting process,
that he couldnt make a decision on a permit
based on peoples feelings or the loss of
value in a home.
Simindinger also pointed out that if an
accident, such as a manure discharge, did
happen, it wouldnt be the farm owners living with it, noting, They would get in their
truck and go home in the evening.

Pigs, pantyhose and paper trees

Storytime families participate in their last event on Thursday at the library. The captive audience followed
arm movements for a song being sung by Ellen Ford. Ford is a folk life artist who creates programs to
honor our past. Around 20 parents and children attended the final party where Ford showed them how
to make paper trees, told stories of farm animals and allowed the children to create tangled webs with
pantyhose. (DHI Media/Kristi Fish)

Humane Society offers adoption effort Clear the shelters today

LIMA The Ohio SPCA &

Humane Society in Lima will
be participating in the second
annual Clear the Shelters event
today.
The event is hosted by
NBCUniversal and encourages
shelters around the country to
offer reduced adoption prices or
waive the fee in an effort to find
homes for more pets currently
living in the shelters.
The shelter in Lima will be
one of more than 400 shelters
across the country participating.
The adoption fees in Lima
will be reduced to just $20 from
noon-4:30 p.m. today.
The usual adoption fee is
$150 for dogs, $200 for puppies,
$60 for cats and $70 for kittens.

Bunnies will also be available

for the reduced $20 fee.
The goal of the event is to
adopt out animals so we can
bring more in and save lives,
Destiny Askins, shelter volunteer, said.
To help make room for more
animals, the shelter needs to
create more space. Right now,
they currently have more than
200 cats and 60-70 dogs on site.
If an animal is adopted today,
it cannot be taken home that
day. First, the shelter must make
phone calls to be sure the home
is a good fit for the animal.
We have to do background
checks for the benefit of the animal, Askins said. We call your
vets to see if your other animals
are up-to-date and well call
landlords. The process does take
a bit longer than some places but
in the end it is worth it.

For those coming to adopt a

pet, Askins reminds them to not
be so quick to judge.
Some of our dogs are so
different in their kennels than
they are outside with each other
or with people, she said. Nico
and Ashby are so shy in their
kennels but when you take them
outside, they are so much fun.
Nico and Ashby came from
a hoarding case. The two dogs
have lived outside their whole
life and have had much to adjust
to. The kennels are a big change
and so are the people. The dogs
have required socialization and
great care. Nico and Ashby are
also at the shelter with many of
the other dogs from the hoarding
case and some of them will be
up for adoption today.

that this has been a known scam for some
time and originates overseas. The sender

Balyeats closed again

Balyeats Coffee Shop is now closed. A sign was placed on the door July 12

VAN WERT Balyeats Coffee

Shop has closed its doors again.
After a little over seven months
under the ownership of Anita Miller,
the historic eatery is back on the
market and this time the doors were
locked.
The doors were unexpectedly
closed on Tuesday, July 12, when a
closed for family vacation sign was
placed on the door.
Now the sign simply reads,

closed.
Miller did not return calls from
The Times Bulletin staff after
Balyeats was listed in the June 2016
Homeplace as for sale, nor did she
return calls on Tuesday seeking comment on the closing.
Jodi Strawser, a 24-year employee
at Balyeats, was surprised to find the
doors with new locks on Tuesday, July
12, after returning from vacation the
week before, July 5-10.
I went in there that Friday, the
last Friday that she [Miller] was open,
to get my check and she told me she
would see me Tuesday, Strawser

said.
When Strawser got to work at
about 4:30 or 5 a.m. on July 12, she
found the locks had changed and just
thought someone would show up with
a new key. When that did not happen,
she called another employee who is
related to Miller and he told her it
was closed.
Of all people, she should have
told me because I was in the restaurant that long, Strawser said. I think
she did everybody wrong.
Strawser called Miller multiple
times July 12 and received a text
message in reply saying she had just
made the decision over the weekend.
She said it wasnt busy the week
that I was on vacation so I really dont
know how long she planned on doing
that or not, Strawser said.
Balyeats was up for sale, but
Strawser said her understanding was
she was going to sell it before she
closed it down.
I think she just did it wrong without telling anybody or warning anybody, Strawser said.
Miller had changed the hours in
June to summer hours of 6 a.m. to 3
p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and
from 9 a.m. to 3 pm. on Sunday.
She tried to make it work, she
really did, but you got to let it go more
than seven months, Strawser said.
Miller bought Balyeats for a little
over $70,000 on Nov. 23, 2015, when
it went up for auction.
Balyeats had not changed hands of
ownership since Dale Davies bought
it in the early 1960s. At 83, Davies
decided it was time to retire as it
neared his 84th birthday.
Its a sad moment because that
was my life up there, Strawser said.
Ive seen kids grow up and people
come and go and Ive made new
friends.
You met good people up there,
she said.

The temperatures this week have been on the rise, reaching 90 degrees or higher. This intense heat can cause heat
exhaustion or heat stroke, particularly in the elderly, young
children and those who are compromised due to chronic
illnesses such as asthma.
With the high heat index, the body can quickly suffer from heat exhaustion. According to Tammi Gough,
Director of Prevention and Health Promotion Services at
Allen County Public Health, it is important to recognize
the symptoms.
With heat exhaustion, people are usually still sweating
profusely and they may be confused or tired, she said.
With heat stroke, they have usually stopped sweating and
they might be lethargic or difficult to rouse.
According to the Ohio Department of Health ,additional symptoms of heat exhaustion can be paleness, muscle
cramps, weakness, nausea, dizziness, headache and fainting. Heat stroke can also cause a quick, strong pulse and
red, hot skin.
One of the best ways to prevent heat exhaustion or heat
stroke is to keep hydrated according to Gough and the Area
Agency on Aging.
You need to drink before youre thirsty and stay as
hydrated as you can, Gough said.
The Area Agency on Aging recommends drinking water
or diluted sport electrolyte drinks unless told otherwise by
a doctor. The CDC warns the elderly to ask a doctor if they
have a restricted amount of water in their diet or they are
taking water pills.
Additionally, the Area Agency on Aging recommends
wearing loose-fitting clothes and to pick lighter colors.
Outdoor activity should also be limited to the cooler hours
of the day, before 10 a.m. and after 4 p.m.
Neighbors, friends and family are advised by ODH to
check on the elderly and those with an illness periodically
to be sure they are not suffering from heat stroke or heat

exhaustion. To further help, the CDC recommends taking

them to air-conditioned locations.
Some places may offer air-conditioned or cooling shelters. Gough advises listening to local radio stations to hear
if a cooling shelter has opened. Additionally, there are places people can go if there are not shelters open.
Its not unusual for a church to open on a very hot day,
so you can check with them first, Gough said. You could
also go to the mall or the movies if you can afford it to help
keep cool.
The CDC also recommends people going to their local
public library to keep cool.
ODH and the Area Agency on Aging also reminds drivers to never leave a child or pet in a parked car whether
or not the windows are open. According to ODH, the temperature inside the car can rise 20 degrees in the first ten
minutes, even with cracked windows. To never forget about
pets or children in the backseat, drivers are told to place
purses, phones and other items in the backseat with them.
The high heat index can cause health problems and even
death in some people. If a person has heat exhaustion,
remember to help them cool down by moving to an air-conditioned or shaded area, give them sips of cool water and
remove tight clothing.
However, if you think the person has progressed to heat
stroke, call 911 immediately, Gough said. In the meantime, try to keep them cool.
If you believe your pet is suffering from heat stroke or
heat exhaustion, Veterinarian Dr. Bonnie Jones of Delphos
Animal Hospital recommends gradual cooling. Give pets
cool water or allow them to lick ice cubes. Wetting their
fur with cool water and placing fans around them. Once
their temperature is normal, dry them off to prevent further
cooling.
If you suspect your pet has heat stroke, take them to the
vet as it can be fatal, Dr, Jones said.
With high temperatures across the country, its important for people and animals to stay hydrated and cool this
weekend.

Country
Wedding work frolic planned;
sister promises eggs to help
make wedding noodles
BY LOVINA EICHER
Today, 17 years ago, our
oldest son was born to us
after having three daughters. I remember seeing the
look on my husband Joes
face when he told me Its a
boy! He loved his daughters
too but was excited to have a
son. Benjamin was only four
pounds and thirteen ounces
at birth and caught the flu at
a few weeks old. He ended
up in the hospital and went
down to four pounds. He
was just a tiny baby but now
he is far from that. We will
give him a tool chest on
wheels with various tools
tonight. He enjoys working
with tools and doing construction work.
Tonight in honor of
Benjamins birthday, 20 to
25 youth will gather at our
local Pizza Hut. Benjamin
loves pizza so he will enjoy
that and also being with his
friends. Daughter Verena
called Pizza Hut to reserve
seats for all of them. I will
need to make a cake for
Ben but might wait until
Saturday to have cake and
ice cream since he wont be
home tonight.
Benjamin didnt have to
go to work yesterday so he
and our son Joseph were
mowing our pasture field
with our big walk behind
mower. It helps keep the
weeds out to mow it down
every once in a while.
Saturday we are having
a work frolic for anyone
who wants to come help us
prepare for the wedding. Joe
ordered material to insulate
and finish the other end of
the pole barn. We will use
both parts of the building
for the wedding and be able
to spread out. Mose will be
here to help but none of his
family will be able to make
it. Moses older brother Joe
is getting married September
2 and that wedding will be at
Moses parents house. They
put up a new pole barn and
are working on finishing that
too. Hopefully we will get
plenty of help to get a lot
done.
We also want to have
someone put a roof coating
on our barn roof. We are
springing a few leaks, so that
should help. Joe also ordered
stain for our ramp and deck.
We wanted to let the wood
season awhile before we
apply the stain. The wedding
is three weeks away so we
need to keep busy. Joe has to
work Saturday in a week so

thats one Saturday less for

him to get ready.
I still havent made noodles for the wedding. Our
chickens have not been laying so well. We have new
ones started but they wont
lay eggs for a few months.
We will butcher the older
chickens and can the broth
once the new hens are laying
eggs. We like to get new
hens every two years. I will
use all my chicken broth I
have left at the wedding so
I will need more. The broth
is used in the noodles and
dressing.
Sister Emma and sons
were here assisting us with
our work yesterday. She said
I can have some of their
eggs to make noodles for the
wedding.
I have had enough pickles to make three batches of
freezer pickles. I am clear
out of any canned or freezer
pickles. Hopefully my plants
keep doing well so I can
restock with those. Plans are
that church will be here in
October so I want to have
plenty of pickles.

Today I want to try and

get started sewing my dress
for the wedding. I once again
have put it off too long.
Friday sisters Verena and
Susan will come help me
with some more cleaning.
Daughter Elizabeth plans to
come as well.
On Friday, July 15, Joe
and I will have our twenty-third wedding anniversary. Twenty-three years!
How can that be possible?
I am blessed to be married
to a kind, loving husband.
Every marriage has ups and
downs but with Gods help
it all ends up making our
love stronger for each other.
Without God in a marriage,
I cant imagine it working
well. Gods love for us is
unconditional. May He bless
each of you!
Freezer Pickles
Makes about 4 pints
I store these in large containers in the freezer so when
I have church I can serve
them for the meal afterward.
But I can also freeze them in
smaller containers so we can

Kitchen Press

eat them at home on sandwiches. It is really surprising

how crisp they are. These
pickles will stay good in the
freezer for up to a year. They
taste so fresh and crunchy.
The making of these pickles
does stretch out over three
days, so plan accordingly!
4 to 5 cucumbers, peeled
and cut into 1/2-inch-thick
slices
2 tablespoons salt
1 large onion, sliced
1 3/4 cups sugar
1/2 cup distilled white
vinegar
Day 1: Put the cucumbers, salt, and onion in a
large bowl. Cover and refrigerate for 24 hours.
Day 2: Drain the juice
from
the
cucumbers.
Combine the sugar and vinegar and stir to dissolve the
sugar. Pour the mixture over
the cucumbers. Cover and
refrigerate for 24 hours.
Day 3: Take the pickles
out of the refrigerator and
pack into a freezer-safe container(s). Pour the syrup over
the pickles and freeze until
ready to use.

Navigating genetically modified organism labeling rules

BY JAMES HOORMAN
Ag Educator
OSU Extension
Putnam County
The following article is
written by Peggy Kirk Hall,
Asst. Professor, Agriculture &
Resource Law.
After several years of debate
over voluntary versus mandatory GMO (genetically modified
organism) labeling, Congress
passed legislation to create a unified national standard requiring
disclosure of information for bioengineered foods. Once effective, the new law will preempt
state laws that require labeling of
foods containing GMOs.
The legislation amends the
Agricultural Marketing Act of
1946 to include the following:
Definition of bioengineered
food, which is food intended for
human consumption that contains
genetic material that has been
modified through in vitro recombinant DNA techniques and for
which the modification could not
otherwise be obtained through
conventional breeding or found
in nature. A food that is derived
from an animal that consumed

feed containing bioengineered

substances shall not be considered
bioengineered. Thus, meat, poultry, dairy and eggs from animals
that have consumed GMO feed
will not be subject to the labeling
requirements because they cannot
be defined as bioengineered.
Preemption of state food labeling standards: No state or political subdivision may establish
requirements for labeling whether a food or seed is bioengineered
or contains ingredients that are
bioengineered. A food may bear
disclosure of bioengineering only
in accordance with federal regulations arising from this law.
Creation of federal mandatory
disclosure standard: Within two
years of the bills enactment, the
Secretary of Agriculture must
establish a mandatory national
bioengineered food disclosure
standard and the procedures necessary to implement the national
standard.
Choice of labeling: The federal standard must give a manufacturer the option of disclosing information with on-package
text, a symbol or an electronic
or digital link, such as a QR
code. An electronic or digital link

must contain access to an internet

website or other type of electronic source. The USDA must
conduct a study to identify potential technological challenges of
disclosure through electronic or
digital means, and must provide
additional options if determined
that the proposed technological
options do not provide sufficient
access to bioengineered food disclosure information. The USDA
must also develop alternative disclosure options for foods contained in small packages.
Exclusions: The following
are excluded from the national disclosure standard: 1) Food
served in a restaurant or similar retail food establishment. 2)
Very small food manufacturers,
to be defined through rulemaking. 3) Meat, poultry, dairy and
eggs from animals that consume
GMO feed. 4) A food containing
meat, poultry or eggs if the predominant ingredient would not
independently be subject to the
standard of if the predominant
ingredient is broth, stock, water
or a similar solution and the second-most predominant ingredient
would not independently be subject to the national standard.

Small food manufacturers:

The USDA must define small
food manufacturers and provide
such manufacturers with a grace
period of at least one year for
implementation of the new standards.
Food safety implications: The
FDA conducts a pre-market consultation process for foods from
genetically engineered plants;
foods that successfully complete
the process shall not be treated
as more or less safe than non-genetically engineered counterparts because of bioengineering.
Organically produced foods: A
food certified as organic under
the national organic program
may be labelled as not bioengineered, non-GMO or with
similar language. Enforcement:
Failing to disclose a food as bioengineered is a prohibited act,
but the rulemaking process will
determine whether there will be
penalties for noncompliance.
The USDA Secretary will have
authority to request records and
conduct audits and hearings in
regards to compliance but will
not have recall authority for a
food that does not comply with
disclosure regulations.

Whats next?
The preemption established
in the new law will be effective immediately and the State
of Vermont is prohibited from
enforcing its GMO labeling law.
A few key issues for agriculture to
track though out the rulemaking
stage will be the determination
of how much bioengineered
substance is sufficient to deem a
food as bioengineered; defining
the very small food manufacturers that will be exempt from
the standard and the small manufacturers that will have a grace
period and simpler disclosure
requirements, whether QR codes
and other technology options will
remain viable due to expected
objections that they discriminate
against lower income consumers;
and penalties for noncompliance.
The two-year window for
rulemaking, however, leaves
open the opportunity for future
changes such as amending the
legislation or prohibiting funding to be used for its implementation. Thus, while we have
entered a new stage of the GMO
labeling debate, the uncertainty
of GMO labeling is not yet fully
resolved.

The Fish Ohio Report
Lake Erie
Reminders: The daily
bag limit for walleye in Ohio
waters of Lake Erie is 6 fish
per angler; minimum size
limit is 15 inches. The
daily bag limit for yellow
perch is 30 fish per angler
in all Ohio waters of Lake
Erie. The trout and salmon
daily bag limit is 5 fish per
angler; minimum size limit
is 12 inches. Black bass
(largemouth and smallmouth
bass): the daily bag limit is 5
fish per angler with a 14-inch
minimum size limit.

Western Basin
Walleye: Walleye fishing
has been improving. Many fish
being caught have been below
the 15-inch size limit, primarily from the 2014 year class.
The best locations have been
off Magee Marsh, northwest
of West Sister Island, near F
and G buoys of the Camp
Perry firing range, near Niagara
Reef, west of Green Island and
Rattlesnake islands and around
Kelleys Island Shoal. Most fish
have been caught by trolling
with spoons or worm harnesses
and by casting with weight-forward spinners or mayfly rigs.
Yellow Perch: Yellow perch
have been caught near the Toledo
harbor light, near B can of the
Camp Perry firing range, west
of Rattlesnake Island and south
of Ballast and Kelleys islands.
Perch-spreaders with shiners
fished near the bottom produce
the most fish.
Largemouth
Bass:
Largemouth bass have been
caught in harbors and along
the main lake shoreline around
Catawba and Marblehead using
drop-shot rigs, tube jigs, and
crankbaits.

Central Basin
Walleye: Walleye fishing is
improving off Sawmill Creek,
northwest of Cranberry Creek
and at Avon Point. Good fishing
was reported in 40-52 feet of
water northeast of Gordon Park
and Wildwood State Park, 40-50
feet of water north of Fairport
Harbor and 70-74 feet north of
Ashtabula. Anglers are trolling
stick baits or harnesses using
Dipsy divers or planer boards
with weights or jet divers. The
best colors have been purple,
chartreuse and pink.
Yellow Perch: Yellow perch
fishing has been slow recently.
The best areas have been off
the Huron River and in 45 feet
north-northeast of Edgewater
Park. There were a few good
reports in 35-50 feet north of
Ashtabula and Conneaut. Perchspreaders with shiners fished
near the bottom produce the
most fish.
Smallmouth Bass: Fishing
has been excellent in 10-30
feet around the harbor areas
in Cleveland, Fairport Harbor,
Geneva, Ashtabula and Conneaut
using drop-shot rigs, tube jigs,
spinners, crankbaits, leeches and
crayfish.
The Lake Erie water temperature is 76 off Toledo and
74 off Cleveland, according
to the nearshore marine forecast. Anglers are encouraged
to always wear a U.S. Coast
Guard-approved personal flotation device while boating.

Drawings for controlled hunts
Last chance to apply for controlled deer and waterfowl hunts!
Application deadline is July 31:
http://ow.ly/bXDp302mtTJ
Find information about each
opportunity and applications here:
http://ow.ly/ggvM300QbeB
Waterfowl hunters are invited to
participate in special drawings for
controlled hunting opportunities! We
will be holding drawings in northwest Ohio at the following locations:
Pipe Creek Wildlife Area
East Sandusky Bay Metro Park
Magee Marsh Wildlife Area
Get the details here: http://
ow.ly/9C5u302mrfV
The Division of Wildlife conducts annual hunts on a number of
areas that are normally closed to
hunting. All applicants (adults and
youth) must possess a current hunting license to apply for controlled
hunts.
Participation is determined by
random computer-generated drawings. Applications may not be faxed
or emailed. Application fees are
non-refundable.
Hunters may apply for and participate in, as either a hunter or a
partner, no more than one hunt per
area, per year. Hunters who fail to
adhere to this rule risk disqualification and loss of their application fee.
Drawings will be held for each
area and each hunt date. Drawings
are held in early August for the early
waterfowl hunts and in September
for all others.

Howard Marsh set to open in
2017
Howard Marsh is scheduled to
open in 2017 in Northwest Ohio!
Coastal wetlands are critically
important to a healthy Lake Erie and
they are imperiled. One of the most
ambitious projects in Metroparks
history is to restore part of a 1,000acre wetland near the lakeshore in
Jerusalem Township.
The future Metropark is adjacent to the Metzger Marsh State
Wildlife Area in a region that also
includes Maumee Bay State Park,

Magee Marsh State Wildlife Area

and the Ottawa National Wildlife
Refuge. Together, these local, state
and federal public lands are known
for their concentration of songbirds,
or warblers, especially during spring
migration.

This and That
Seeing posts on Facebook about
wildlife is great but its nothing compared to the real thing.
Wildlife surrounds us in Ohio
but where are the best spots to watch
our native species in their natural
habitat? Check our website for the
best watchable wildlife viewing sites
in Ohio. http://ow.ly/NsynG

Educators, scientists and technologists from the Cuyahoga Valley
National Park, Kent State University
and Cleveland Metroparks have
partnered to develop a new learning app that is now live and freely available on iTunes. The app,
called ParkApps, features a number of different resources aimed at
educating park visitors during their
visit. In Adventure Tracks, visitors
can explore topics like wildflowers,
geology, or marsh habitats while
they hike the trails! http://ow.ly/

Would you consider attending
a pollinator habitat management
workshop? These workshop series
provide educational opportunities for
landowners focusing on establishment and management of wildlife
habitat.
Last month, 90 landowners were
drawn to Shelby County, Ohio to
learn about pollinator habitat management. Participants learned about
the importance of pollinator habitat
for bees, butterflies and many other
pollinator species. They were taught
how to establish and improve pollinator habitats filled with native
wildflowers and grasses that provide cover and food for pollinators.
The service forester explained how
important trees, shrubs, and forest
wildflowers also play an important
role for pollinators. Finally, a local
bee keeper taught participants about
honeybees and the much needed pollinator plants to improve honeybee
health.
Be on the lookout for more pollinator workshops in the future!

Rome Pope Benedict
has indicated that if President
Wilson will undertake the task

The Pope expressed pleasure
over the fact that the diplomatic
negotiations between the U.S.
and Germany had resulted in
a promise from Germany to
modify her submarine warfare.
The pontiff said that President

From Steinle Ice Plant

A double runaway started
from the plant of the Steinle
Brewing & Ice Co., Thursday
morning, but no injuries resulted
to the occupants of the buggies
as they leaped from the rigs.
Alvin Elwer, south of
Delphos , and Fred Metzger,
east of the city, were driving up
to the ice plant, when the horse
owned by Mr. Elwer frightened and crashed toward Mr.
Metzgers buggy. The shafts of
the rigs became caught, and both
horses started to run.
At a point near the bottling
department of the plant, the buggies became disengaged, and the
horse belonging to Mr. Elwer
proceeded several squares
before being caught. Both buggies were damaged. The top
was torn from Mr. Metzgers
buggy and carried along by Mr.
Elwers buggy.

Will Follow Lincoln
Highway On Trip Back
In making the coast-to-coast
drive-New York to Los Angeles
- in 24 days, Mrs. Lillian Harris
of Redbank, N.J., is considered
to have set a new record for
women drivers.
Carrying four other women
as passengers, Mrs. Harris drove
the entire distance of 4,950
miles without assistance. She
reached her destination without
mechanical or any other kind
of difficulty. One of the things
about which Mrs. Harris was
particularly enthusiastic was the
absence of fatigue during the
tour, which she attributes to the
smooth running of the car and
the case of handling.
Out of the twenty-four days,
there was only four on which it
was necessary to shift into gears
lower than high, the use of intermediate and low gears being
the occasioned by encountering
some unusually bad roads.
After the women have visited the San Diego exposition,
toured southern California and
have seen the San Francisco fair,
they will begin the return trip
overland, following the Lincoln
Highway.

Buy at Home
During the next six months
the Herald will run a series of
strong educational stories on this
subject which will prove to the
reader of the Herald the feasibility of patronizing home trade
as against foreign trading centers. Especially the large mail
order houses that are invading
every community in the land.
These big mail order houses
sell goods by retail through the
agency of catalogue, advertising all over the country, but
buy nothing from their customers. They invariably exchange
goods for money but buy nothing from their customers, and
never money for goods. They
employ no labor in the communities where their customer must
earn their living. Also they buy
no farm products.

On the
many muffled Other Hand
Im one of those silly pet owners that give their animals voices and other human qualities they
dont naturally possess. Its called
anthropomorphism: the attribution of
human characteristics and qualities to
non-human beings, objects, natural or
supernatural phenomena. I cant help
it. I feel my furry one needs a voice. I
do the same thing with babies.
When we had our aguarium, our
electric blue lobsters name was
Pierre because I swear he would talk
with a French accent if he could. He
would also sport a jaunty beret and a
pencil mustache.
I think everyone should have a
voice. It doesnt seem like the average person does, though.
One person doesnt want a prayer
said in this place and next thing you
know, theres now no prayer in a lot
of places. Perhaps I wanted to pray
there. Perhaps I should be allowed
to pray there and if you dont want
to, dont.
Something offends someone and
suddenly that thing is gone even
though it didnt offend many and
now they no longer have the right to
it. Maybe it didnt offend me. Maybe
I liked it. Maybe if it offended you,
you should walk away.
The list goes on and on. Now
we cant wish someone a Merry
Christmas without offending someone else. Well, guess what. Wear a
sign and Ill never wish you a Merry
Christmas. However, I find it won-

derful to hear those words

at that time of year and I
know many others do, too,
so Ill be wishing everyone a Merry Christmas.
If it offends you, please
let me know. Ill try to

Picture just a few minutes

into the film Apocalypse Now,
the moment when the helicopters carry the 1st Cavalry
Division to a Vietcong-held
position. The warbirds ride
over open water to the powerful notes of Richard Wagners
Ride of the Valkyries.
Just about two and a half
weeks ago, all was quiet on
the Northwest Ohio front. My
Steven and I could walk the
trails on the Back 40 with the
dogs. We couldnt just walk,
Anne Coburn-Griffis
we could mosey, taking time to
stop and identify a butterfly or
flower, even snap a photo or two. Then the Valkyries of summer
arrived. For those of you who arent into Old Norse mythology,
a Valkyrie is one of a host of female figures who choose those
who will die in battle and those who will live. Female mosquitoes
are kind of like that, especially if you live in the tropics or are a
pregnant woman who has tickets to the 2016 Summer Games in
Rio de Janeiro.
Much of June was relatively mosquito-free in these parts. Then
our Sunday afternoon walk developed into a trot with arms swinging and swatting at any hint of a whine. Once the whine became
the incessant drum of a thousand beating wings, we took to open
road or any path that was open to breeze. Im afraid a few innocent
nectar-eating male mosquitoes met their end by the back of my
hand along the way, but I nailed plenty of blood-drinking females
in the process.
Fun Fact: the lifespan of the female mosquito is much longer
than that of the male mosquitoas long as one to two weeks.
This summer was shaping up to be relatively quiet on the
ectoparasite front. Insect-consuming swallows patrolled the lawn
during breakfast. Dragonflies took over the patrol with the heat of
the day. Then four inches of rain washed the baby dragonflies away
from their nurseries and mosquito larva filled the void. Although
the memory of recent winters sends shivers, I find myself wishing
for the first frost. Id even give up the four growing tomatoes that
the chickens left for us if it meant freeze-dried mosquitoes.
But as bad as they are this year, it was alarming to read a social
media comment asking when the county will spray for mosquitoes. They already seem to have developed a tolerance for most
repellents, whereas bees, butterflies and the aforementioned dragonflies perish at the first whiff. Just imagine the opening sequence
of that same 1979 film, the images of the world on fire with Jim
Morrison proclaiming This is the end. I dont think anyone
wants to experience that.

Frequent flying yields anecdotes

Whether you are a frequent flyer
or a once-every-two-years reluctant
flyer, it can be a challenging experience. If all the flights are on time,
the airline employees usually are
warm and friendly. If the airlines are
running late, making the customers unruly, the employees can get
downright ornery.
As passengers, you can have the
worlds best flight attendants, or
you can have ones youd never want
to see again. Here are a few actual
comments commercial airline pilots
and attendants have shared with
their passengers in an attempt to
put some levity into their regular
announcements.
They came to me from fellow
newspaper publishers Peter Wagner
and Larry Tobin who, Im sure, got
them from friends of theirs. Now, if
we could only get the TSA agents to
lighten up!
*A plane was taking off from
Kennedy Airport. After it reached
a comfortable cruising altitude, the
captain announced: Ladies and
gentlemen, this is your captain
speaking. Welcome to Flight No.
293, nonstop from New York to Los
Angeles. The weather ahead is good
and we should have a smooth and

uneventful flight.
Now sit back and relaxOH,
MY GOD! Silence followed, and
after a few minutes, the captain
came back on the intercom and said,
Ladies and gentlemen, I am so
sorry if I scared you earlier. While I
was talking to you, the flight attendant accidentally spilled a cup of
hot coffee in my lap. You should see
the front of my pants!
A passenger in Coach yelled,
Thats nothing. You should see the
back of mine.
*There may be 50 ways to leave
your lover, but there are only four
ways to leave this airplane.
*As the plane landed and was
coming to a stop at Washington
National Airport, a lone voice came
over the loudspeaker: Whoa, big
fella. Whoa.
*After a particularly rough
landing during thunderstorms
in Memphis, a flight attendant
announced: Ladies and gentlemen, please remain in your seats
until Capt. Crash and his crew have
brought the aircraft to a screeching halt against the gate. And once
the tire smoke has cleared and the
warning bells are silenced, well
open the door and you can pick

your way through the wreckage to

the terminal.
*Another attendant was heard
to say: Weather at our destination is 50 degrees with some broken clouds, but well try to have
them fixed before we arrive. Thank
you and remember, nobody loves
you, or your money, more than
Northwest Airlines.
*During the pre-flight announcements, a flight attendant said:
Should the cabin lose pressure,
oxygen masks will drop from the
overhead area. Please place the bag
over your own mouth and nose
before assisting children or adults
who might be acting like children.
If you are traveling with more than
one small child, pick your favorite
to help first.
*Wed like to thank you folks
for flying with us today. And, the
next time you get the insane urge
to go blasting through the skies in
a pressurized metal tube, we hope
youll think of us here at Delta
Airlines.
*A pilot welcomed his passengers with this message: We are
pleased to have some of the best
flight attendants in the industry
working at United. Unfortunately,

Letter to the Editor

DEAR EDITOR:
The Spencerville Citizens Against Factory
Farms would like to bring to your attention of
a 2.2 million chicken, egg laying facility that is
being proposed for construction on SR 116 at the
Van Wert/Auglaize county line.
Pine Valley Ranch LLC has submitted an
application to the Ohio Department of Agriculture
to build this mega farm, which if allowed to proceed will be situated within the boundaries of the
Allen County Combined Sole Source Aquifer.
It spans into the counties of Allen, Auglaize,
Mercer, Putnam, and Van Wert. This aquifer is
the primary water source to 90 percent of the
30,000 residents who depend on it for their daily
water needs, including the Delphos region. It also
serves the livestock water needs for the countless
family farms in that area.
PVR proposes to draw 91,800 gallons of
water daily, equaling 33,507,000 gallons annually. They also calculate to produce 18,333 tons
of chicken manure annually. A lagoon capable
of holding 1.9 million gallons of liquid waste
will also accompany this facility. There is a real
potential for groundwater contamination, along
with manure runoff making its way to Lake Erie,

compounding the algae bloom issues as we have

all seen with Grand Lake St. Marys and more
recently with Lake Erie.
Several conservation groups have reworked
the numbers provided by PVR regarding water
usage, and manure output. A formula provided
by the Poultry Science Association, regarding
water usage for a facility of this size, indicates
159,720 gallons of water daily or 58,297,800
gallons annually. As for manure output, using
the OSU Extension Bureaus Livestock Manure
Management Guide, they found the manure output to be closer to 93,000 tons.
PVR estimates that 120 semi trucks will service this facility on a weekly basis, each truck
fully loaded will weigh 80,000 pounds. Per Ohio
law, they are mandated to operate upon state
highways. SR 66 is listed as one of the preferred
routes to reach this facility.
Let your voices be heard, Email: Kevin.
elder@agri.ohio.gov or nancy.cunningham@
agri.ohio.gov from the Ohio Department of
Agriculture to voice your concerns letting them
know this is not good for one Communities.
Brett Rider
Spencerville

none of them are on this flight.

*On a Southwest flight (SW has
no assigned seating) you sit where
you want. Passengers were apparently having a hard time choosing a seat when a flight attendant
announced: People, people were
not picking out furniture here, find
a seat and get in it!
*On a Continental Flight with a
very senior flight attendant crew,
the pilot said, Ladies and gentlemen, weve reached cruising altitude and Im turning down the cabin
lights. This is for your comfort and
to enhance the appearance of your
flight attendants.
*On landing, the flight attendant
said, Please be sure to take all of
your belongings. If youre going to
leave anything, please make sure
its something wed like to have,
such as a Tablet or a Kindle. Please
do not leave any children.
*From a Southwest employee:
Welcome aboard Flight 245 to
Tampa. To operate your seat belt,
insert the metal tab into the buckle,
and pull tight. It works just like
every other seat belt; and, if you
dont know how to operate one, you
probably shouldnt be out in public
unsupervised.

Byron McNutt

People Make
the Difference
*Thank you for flying Delta
Business Express. We hope you
enjoyed giving us the business as
much as we enjoyed taking you for
a ride.
*After a particularly rough landing in Atlanta, a flight attendant
announced, Please take care when
opening the overhead compartments
because, after a landing like that,
sure as hell everything has shifted
and some things may have broken.
*Your seat cushion can be used
for flotation (wait for the laughing
to stop); and, in the event of an
emergency water landing, please
paddle to shore and take them with
you with our compliments.
*After another very rough landing, the Captain ordered the first
officer to stand at the door as the
passengers exited. She was to say,
Thanks for flying our airline and
apologize for any inconvenience the
passengers may have experienced.
Finally everyone had gotten off
except for a little old lady walking
with a cane.
She said, Maam, do you mind
if I ask you a question? Why, no,
said the first officer. What is it?
The little old lady said, Did we
land, or were we shot down?

For spectators, admission is free but seating is limited, so those attending are encouraged to bring their own
chairs. Additionally, spectators can shop at vendors and
purchase food at the event.
This year is like a re-birth for the event, so we dont
have too much for the spectators; were trying to rebuild,
Burden said. However, they are welcome to watch the
noontime demonstration and shop at vendors and buy radio
airplanes.
Those in attendance may also enjoy a raffle, 50/50
drawing and door prizes. Additionally, Burden said spectators can enter a giveaway for a membership to the club.
Well have a giveaway for a membership to the club
along with an AMA membership, he said.
Overnight camping is also available at the event but
there is no electricity on the site.
We just want people to be able to come out for the
weekend and see what were all about, Burden said.

Support

FROM THE ARCHIVES

(Continued from page 1)

SCAFF formally requested the boards
support of their opposition of the mega-farm
and urged them to call the ODA and various
senators and representatives serving the area.
While supporters of the mega-farm are
few, two people at the meeting presented
counter arguments to SCAFFs.
Ashley Youngpeter told the board that she
was the wife of a manure pumper, adding,
We live by EPA regulations.
Youngpeter pointed out Suever Stone uses
1.1 million gallons of water in their processes
as a counter to SCAFFs water argument.
Youngpeter further stated that truckers pay
a heavy road tax and truckers are safety-minded, noting that accidents happen but called
them an act of God.
Youngpeter told the board that there was
an opportunity at the end of this, citing tax
dollars that would be coming in that would
benefit the school.
No one complained about various farms
going up, she added.
Darrell Braun also spoke up in defense of
truck drivers.
Truck drivers were watching what we
do, Baum commented, adding that most
truckers were safety-oriented.
After the presentation, the school board

moved into executive session to discuss

SCAFFs request.
When the meeting adjourned, Board
President John Goecke said the board felt it
did not have enough information to support
the request.
With what information was shared, we
were there for 20 minutes; it was really not
enough information to do anything with,
Goecke said. We werent really planning on
doing more research as far as the board goes.
In response to concerns about childrens
safety and well-being, he said, We are in the
business of educating our children. Of course
we care for their physical safety, adding that
the board couldnt give any additional direction at this time.
Rider said he respected the boards decision but hoped individual members of the
board would contact the areas senators and
representatives and officials at the ODA to
express their opposition to the mega-farm.
SCAFFs viewpoint is that once the door is
opened for mega-farms such as the proposed
2.2-million-chicken farm, the area would be
flooded with more and more such facilities.
Mercer County is at the point of saturation
or has already reached the saturation point.
Rider said an update meeting for residents
will be held at the Monticello church Tuesday
at 7 p.m.

Dan Smith, superintendent of postal
operations; Postmaster Don Martin; Bob
Siefker, letter carrier; George Rodney,
clerk; Jeff Metcalfe, letter carrier; and Ray
Eggeman, letter carrier; have been recognized for 20 years of service by the
U.S. Postal Service. Martin said the Postal
Service was organized July 1, 1971, under
the Postal Reorganization Act to make it
self-sufficient as a government corporation.
These employees were with the post office
prior to 1971 when it was the Post Office
Department.
Andy Schrader received a gift certificate
for free ice cream from Martha Miller of
the Delphos Young Farmwives. He was one
of 10 winners drawn from a registration
at the Delphos Public Library in recognition of National Dairy Month. Other winners were Jayson Foust, Isaac Calvelage,
Amandi Unterbrink, Jessica Moorman, Matt
Mueller, Melissa Fischer, Greg Joseph, Brad
Music and Aaron Fischer.
50 Years Ago 1966
Delphos Yankees posted a 4-1 win over
the Braves Wednesday night at Stadium
Park. Mike Suever, the winning pitcher ,
gave up only two hits. The Yanks got their
four runs on six hits. Both teams went errorless. Dick Kaverman was credited with a
double and a single for the Yanks. Calvelage
was the losing pitcher.
A2/c Carl R. Kortokrax, son of Mr.

and Mrs. Kenneth Kortokrax of Delphos,

has been promoted to Airman First Class.
Airman Kortokrax is presently stationed in
Thailand. He is married to the former Carol
A. Miller, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Burlon
Miller of Delphos. They are the parents of
one son.
75 Years Ago 1941
Mrs. C. W. Myers entertained the members of the Trylon Club and two guests, Mrs.
Philip Walther and Mrs. Arnold Korber, at
her home in Fort Jennings Tuesday evening.
Mrs. Walther was high in bunco, Mrs. John
Oberinger second and Mrs. Joseph Minnig
low. Contest honors went to Walther. In two
weeks, Mrs. Barney Eickholt, West First
Street, will entertain.
It would be difficult to designate one
player as the mainspring of the St. Louis
Cardinals inspiring bid for the 1941
National League pennant but if that honor
is to go to an individual Wednesday, let it be
veteran pitcher Lon Warneke. The Arkansas
right-hander is the only veteran in Manager
Billy Sothworths mound corps and tops the
bunch with 12 victories against five defeats.
Wendelmott, pitcher for the Lima First U.
B. Church softball team, entered the Hall
of Fame Tuesday evening at the stadium
here when he hurled a no-hit, no-run game
against the local Capitol Theatre team. The
final score was 1 to 0. Only two Delphos
players reached first base, both on errors,
and neither advanced past second base.

Nico, left, and Ashby are two of the dogs currently at the shelter. The dogs are part of
a hoarding case and are currently being socialized and cared for so they may find good
homes. Although Ashby is not ready to be adopted, Nico is available for adoption today.

Adoption

(Continued from page 1)

Were still working with Ashby; she is such
a good dog but we dont want her to be adopted
too soon, Askins said. However, Nico should
be available for adoption on Saturday. He is great
with kids and other dogs.
For those interested in the stories of the dogs
and cats at the shelter, Askins encourages them
to ask. The stories can explain the behavior of
the animals or even inspire a bond between the
possible new owner and animal.
Although todays event is happening to
encourage the adoption of shelter animals, the
OHIO SPCA & Humane Society is aware that
many cannot have pets but would still like to
support the shelter.

We have a volunteer application that people

can come in and fill out, Askins said. You can
tell us if youd prefer to work with dogs or cats
and when you are available to volunteer.
Additionally, people without extra time are
encouraged to use their social media pages to help
the shelter.
We post on our social media about our animals and what we need, so if people can just share
our posts, they would help us out, Askins said.
Others can also consider fostering, donating
money or donating items off of the shelters
Amazon wish list.
The shelter is located at 3606 Elida Road in
Lima. For more information, check the website at
ohiospca.org or the Facebook page Ohio SPCA &
Humane Society.
