Assignment #5

The Affordable Care Act (ACA) has a number of positive and negative
side effects, depending on what side of the spectrum your viewpoint is. A
component of the ACA that is contestable from my point of view is that
copayments and deductibles are higher than what could have been found
pre ACA for the same dollar amount of coverage. This increase in
copayments and deductibles may lead to lower health outcomes, especially
for those in a lower economic level.2
Imagine, the people of our wonderful state of West Virginia, who are
among the least wealthy in these United States, trying to use their benefits
that they were forced into enrolling in- just to find out they have a $40 or
higher copay for services. So, in this case, the choice between making an
appointment to a doctor concerning your heart palpitations and getting
groceries for your wife and 4 children is an easy one. Therefore, you go
forward without getting the care you need, increasing your risks for an
emergency room visit, which will be much more expensive in the long run.
As your newly elected Congresswoman, you can be sure I will be there
on the floor of congress meetings with your interests in mind concerning the

costs of healthcare with the ACA, fighting to bring them down, and bring your
coverage up! In Canada, although you are paying higher taxes to receive
these benefits, you dont pay a penny to go to the doctor for those heart
palpitations1, so you will be able to go without hesitation. I believe our ACA
could reflect a more patient driven plan that isnt about citizens being
consumers, but being patients with needs that our healthcare system should
be meeting, not only subsidizing the cost of extremely disastrous health
events, but covering the routine maintenance healthcare as well.
