TheAssignment
:CreateaLinocut5x7printofaportraitthatcombinestheuse
ofaspecificnarrative.UsewhatyoulearnedatCrystalBridgestocommunicateyour
ownnarrativewithaportraitofyourself.Generatesketchestoexplorehowyouwill
chooseshapestotransformyourportraittoaprint,andwithideasabouthowyouwill
includeelementsthatcontainyournarrative.

Wewillbeworkingintwosections:drawingthefaceandreducingittoshapes
Andthentheprintingprocess.

Day1

Objective
:Studentswillexploreideasfortransformingtheirportraitsintodrawings.
Sketchesshouldshowanexperimentationwiththelightanddarkareasoftheirfaces
anddifferentapproachestodrawingthem.Whenthecontourdrawingshowsup,
studentswillbeaskedtogobackoveritwithshapesoneitherday1or2.

Demonstration
(5to10minutes):
Iwillfirstdemonstratesomeguidelinesfortheproportionsoftheface,
includingthevolumetriclinedrawingdenotingwheretheeyesnoseandmouthshould
be.
Whytheeyesarehalfwaybetweenthetopandbottomoftheoval?
Whocantellmewhatiswrongwiththeshading?

IwillhaveapictureofmyselfontheoverheadwhereIcanshowtheclass
howIwouldbreakdownmyportraitintopositive(lightareas)andnegativespace
(shadowedareas).Iwillaskiftheycanseehowthefeaturesofmyfacearewhatis
interactingwiththelighttomaketheshapes.

Demonstration
(5to10minutes):
Iwillhaveinks,Plexiglas,brayer,knifeforscoopingink,carvedlinoleum,and
paper.Iwillspreadtheinkoutstressingtheimportanceofnotusingtoomuchortoo
littleink.Whenitisready,Iwillinkthelinoleumandplaceitonthepaper.Iwillshow
howIusethehandleofagouge(orothertool)forrubbingevenlyalloverthebackof
thepagetoinsureagoodtransferofinkandminimizewhitespots.Neatnessmustbe
stressedtokeeptheedgesclean.Iwillshowtheprintandofferaquickevaluationof
strengthsandweaknessesofwhatImade.

GuidedPractice
:Studentswillfinishthetransfersandbeginprinting.

Cleanup
:(5minutes):Studentswillcleanaccordingtothecharts.Iwillusevolunteers

newcolorandcarvings.Havethelinoleumfromfirstdemocleanedandcarvedagain,
usethefirstexample.
